SPAIN

The Government warns that it will never recognize “the occupation of the city of Gaza for Israel”: {Translation}
– On Monday, Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares in an interview on TVE, commented on Israel’s decision to occupy Gaza City and stressed that the Spanish government “will never recognize” this occupation. “This escalation in Israel’s military occupation of Gaza will only bring more death and suffering,” he said.
– Albares believes that what the Middle East needs right now is to “break the blockade” that Israel is imposing on Gaza, an “induced famine” in the minister’s words, and therefore called for the “immediate release” of all hostages and for the two-state solution to be put “back on track” with a “realistic and viable” Palestinian state. “Gaza is part of the State of Palestine. Gaza must remain under the control of a single Palestinian national authority, just like the West Bank, connected by a corridor that gives them territorial continuity with a port and access to the sea in Gaza and with their capital in East Jerusalem,” he explained. Albares also reproached Israel for “not respecting” its obligations to the occupied territories, something he considers “a mistake” and therefore “condemns in the strongest terms.”
– When asked if Spain is considering imposing sanctions on Israel, Albares replied that it is “absolutely” and that “there already are.” He has called for the “immediate suspension” of the association agreement between Israel and the European Union, both the economic part and the Horizon program. In his opinion, “no one in their right mind” can think that “Europeans and Israel can have a normal relationship as if nothing were happening” and therefore, he believes that “the rest of the EU countries” should also apply the arms embargo to Israel, as Spain has done.
– “These measures are nothing more than strict compliance with European legislation itself,” he said, before going on to condemn Israel’s “flagrant violation” of human rights in Gaza.
“Our own European legislation tells us that we should not sell arms to third parties at war, which is common sense. We are not going to add fuel to the fire. Israel and the Middle East do not need more arms; what they need is peace, just like the Palestinian people,” he concluded. NERJA

Nerja and Maro to be connected by bike lanes: {Translation}
– The Nerja Town Council is pushing ahead with plans to connect Nerja and Maro by bike lane. The Local Government Board has approved the project for the construction of a new section, approximately 1,200 meters long, with a base tender budget of €449,248.80. The project is part of the “Sustainable Nerja” Tourism Sustainability Plan (PSTD), included in the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, and financed by the European Union through NextGenerationEU funds.
– The mayor, José Alberto Armijo, stressed that this new project, the fourth promoted by the City Council, will definitively connect Nerja and Maro by means of a bike lane between the roundabout at the entrance to Burriana beach and the roundabout located at the western entrance to Maro. The 3.2-kilometer route will promote sustainable mobility and also contribute to boosting active tourism.
– For his part, the Councilor for Infrastructure, Alberto Tomé, explained that the route will run along the Barranco de Maro bridge and parallel to the old N-340 road to the entrance of Maro. Following the approval of the project, the City Council will continue with the necessary administrative procedures to approve the specifications and put the works out to tender, with the aim of starting their execution. HEALTH

Health authorities warn of a possible major failure in some glucose monitoring applications: {Translation, summary}
– The Spanish Medicines Agency (AEMPS) has received notice from Dexcom regarding a fault in the Dexcom G7 apps for iOS/Android (version 2.8 and earlier), where a failure in the transmitter causes the app to end the sensor session unexpectedly without a “sensor failed” warning. This risks undetected hyperglycaemia or hypoglycaemia episodes since glucose data and alerts cease.
– The Dexcom G7 system measures glucose continuously via a sensor on the skin, intended as a substitute for finger-prick blood tests in people over two years old, including pregnant women. The app’s readings are based on glucose trends over time and assist therapy adjustments. Users can also access glucose information on compatible Apple Watches through a companion app that requires the main Dexcom G7 app installed.
– Dexcom is notifying users via app alerts and recommends updating the app to avoid this issue. Both apps are available for download on Apple and Android stores. Source, Spanish: https://www.diariosur.es/sociedad/fallo-apps-control-glucosa-20250808211340-nt_amp.html

TECH

Windows 10’s Extended Updates Just Got Cheaper- But You’ll Need to Sign In With a Microsoft Account- Full details:
– Microsoft has confirmed that paying $30 to enroll a Windows 10 PC into the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program will also require a Microsoft Account to complete the transaction. The good news is that one ESU license will cover up to 10 devices signed into the same account, meaning you don’t need to pay $30 per device like originally thought. Strangely, this was not made clear in Microsoft’s original announcement.
– The company has confirmed that all enrollment options require a Microsoft Account, regardless of if you’re paying $30 or not. A Microsoft support document makes it abundantly clear: “All enrollment options provide extended security updates through October 13, 2026. You will need to sign into your Microsoft account in order to enroll in ESU.
You’ll be given these options to choose from when you enroll in the ESU program.
*One-time purchase of $30 USD
*1,000 Microsoft Reward points
*Free if you sync your PC settings to OneDrive
– The option for enrolling Windows 10 PCs into the ESU program opened in July, and it’s now slowly rolling out to all users on Windows 10 that are running the latest updates. You can enroll your PC into the ESU program by heading to Windows Update and clicking the “Enroll now” button that will appear there.
– If you don’t see the button just yet, don’t worry. The enrollment process is rolling out in waves and so it might not have reached you just yet.
– Here are the steps to enroll your PC:
*Go to Settings > Update & Security >Windows Update. If your device meets the prerequisites, you’ll see a link to enroll in ESU.
*Once you select Enroll now you’ll start the ESU enrollment. If you are signed into Windows with a local account, you will be prompted to sign into your Microsoft account. If you are already backing up your PC Settings, you will see a prompt to enroll your device.
*You can choose if you want to begin backing up your settings to OneDrive (some techs advise against this method as the OneDrive storage is not very secure), redeem Rewards (which few casual users have), or make a one-time purchase to enroll in ESU and pay €30. Rafa Nadal and Mery Perelló welcome their second child: {Translation}
– Former tennis player Rafa Nadal and his wife, Mery Perelló, welcomed their second child, named Miquel, at a hospital in Palma de Mallorca (Balearic Islands). The birth took place last Thursday at Quirónsalud Palmaplanas, where their first child, Rafael, was born in October 2022, according to reports in the Última Hora and Diario de Mallorca newspapers on Saturday.
– The parents and baby left the hospital on Saturday, where the couple’s families had been visiting since Thursday to see the newborn and congratulate them. The name Miquel is a tribute to Mery’s father, who died in April 2023 at the age of 63 after a long illness. Rafa Nadal married Mery Perelló on October 19, 2019, in a ceremony held at Sa Fortalesa, an estate located in the Mallorcan municipality of Pollença. Spectacular “artificial” fireball crosses Malaga and Andalusia sky: {Translation, summary}
– Apparently it was not a meteorite but the effect of users was equally shocking: that of a spectacular and bright fireball crossing the sky. The phenomenon surprised many Malaga, Andalusians and Spanish this Sunday, August 10. It happened around 23:49, Spanish local peninsular time, and there were many witnesses who saw and recorded it throughout its path through Andalusia, Murcia and southern Alicante until then went to the Balearic Islands. But what exactly was that light event?
– According to José María Madiedo, researcher at the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia (IAA-CSIC) and director of the Smart project, was the “re-entry of an artificial object in the earth’s atmosphere.” The object, “probably a satellite, entered the atmosphere about 29 thousand km/h on the Atlantic side of the Iberian Peninsula, then flew over and continued towards the Mediterranean. EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES

Getting high-schoolers onto the fast track to a good paying job, without attending university or joining the army, Spanish language requirements vary from minimal to proficient : {DigameXtra Exclusive}
– High school graduates in Spain have excellent opportunities to rapidly secure well-paying positions in the skilled trades, thanks to continued demand in several sectors. Here are the top trades jobs to consider
1. Construction Trades:
Electricians, Plumbers, Carpenters, Welders
These roles are among the most sought after in 2025, driven by infrastructure projects, urban renewal, and increased housing construction. Salaries typically start at €20,000–€24,000 per year for entry-level positions, rising to €30,000 or more with specialization and experience. Shortage of skilled labour ensures continuous demand, especially in Spain’s large cities and tourist regions.
2. Renewable Energy & Solar Installation:
Solar Panel Installers, Renewable Energy Technicians
Spain’s transition to renewables has generated high demand for solar and wind energy experts. Solar installers typically earn €25,000–€35,000 per year, with opportunities for advancement as investment in green energy grows. The sector is projected to maintain double-digit job growth rates.
3. Logistics and Maintenance:
Logistics Operators, Vehicle Technicians & Drivers, HVAC Installers (HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning).
Logistics roles remain crucial as e-commerce and supply chain modernization expand. Salaries range from €18,000–€27,000 annually for logistics and drivers, while maintenance/HVAC technicians command €22,000–€32,000 with additional certifications in automation or refrigeration.
– Vocational Pathways and Regional Trends:
Most skilled trades jobs are accessible through vocational training programs (Formación Profesional, FP), which last about two years. These programs feature practical learning and direct ties with employers, helping new graduates secure rapid job placement. Salaries are typically higher than average in Madrid, the Basque Country, and Catalonia.
**Why Choose Trades in Spain?**
– Consistent job openings due to demographic shifts (retiring workers).
– Stable, above-average starting salaries with fast advancement possible.
– Strong job security even during economic fluctuations, supported by ongoing investments in infrastructure and energy. Many trades have trade unions, which negotiate contracts, negotiate for regular pay and benefits raises, and defend worker’s rights, among other things. Union jobs tend be more stable, and unions get all the largest private and publicly funded project contracts.
– For graduates ready to enter the workforce directly, trades like construction, renewable energy installation, logistics, and technical maintenance stand out as the fastest routes to stable, well-paying employment in Spain’s dynamic economy.
**Getting Started**
– To get started on a trades career in Spain, students follow the country’s respected vocational training system called Formación Profesional (FP). As early as 16, after completing compulsory secondary education (ESO), a student can enroll in a “Grado Medio” (Intermediate Level) FP cycle, which covers fields such as electricity, plumbing, carpentry, mechanics, and renewable energies. Those completing upper secondary education (Bachillerato) can access even higher-level “Grado Superior” (Advanced Level) programs.
– The typical path involves applying between May and June, with final enrollment decided in July and classes beginning in September. Vocational FP courses last around two years and combine classroom study with hands-on company internships. These programs are designed around labour market needs, ensuring a direct pipeline from training into real jobs. Key requirements generally include an ESO diploma for Grado Medio or a Bachillerato for Grado Superior, though there are also entrance exams for those without the standard qualifications.
– In some regions, students may also need to demonstrate basic Spanish proficiency for admission. Many FP institutions offer support courses, and those who complete FP programs gain both professional certification and the practical experience needed to secure well-paid, in-demand employment as soon as they graduate.
– This system makes it possible for students in Spain to move directly into construction, renewable energy, logistics, and technical roles- providing a stable, well-compensated career path without university study. Taking advantage of advanced training programs can provide opportunities for advancement in position and wages.
