Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

SPAIN
The Ministry of the Interior declares a pre-emergency phase of the state plan in response to the numerous fires ravaging Spain, including the one in Tarifa: {Translation, summary}
– The Ministry of the Interior has declared the pre-emergency phase, operational situation 1, of the State General Emergency Plan (Plegem) due to active forest fires across several autonomous communities, including Madrid, Andalusia, Castilla-León, Castilla-La Mancha, Galicia, and Extremadura.
– This declaration does not imply state intervention in regional emergency management, which remains the competence of the autonomous communities.
– The fires have forced thousands of evacuations and caused one fatality in Tres Cantos (Madrid). Consequently, the National Centre for Emergency Monitoring and Coordination has enhanced communication with regional emergency centres and mobilised state resources such as the Military Emergency Unit (UME).
– A meeting of the State Coordination and Direction Committee (Cecod) will be held shortly to assess and coordinate further actions. This plan defines the organisation and resource mobilisation for emergencies, activating the pre-emergency phase when regional emergencies may require additional support from other regions or the State.
– Operational situation 1 indicates the emergency can be managed with local resources and occasional external aid, without centralised coordination.
– Andalusia is currently battling multiple severe wildfires, with one of the largest blazes centred around Tarifa in Cádiz province {video}. Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/sociedad/interior-declara-fase-preemergencia-plan_0_2004554940.html & Video Link

Malaga Fair Parking & Transport Info:
– Malaga Fair runs for 7 days between 16 and 23 August in 2025.
– Public transportation will be one of the options available to the public for getting around Malaga during the days of the Fair. However, some people will choose to use their cars or motorcycles to visit one of the two main venues for this celebration: the Real Cortijo de Torres and the Historic Center. For the area around the Real, the Mobility Department has set up a total of 3,535 parking spaces for cars. These spaces are identified by their name and color.
– See map with parking spaces below.
– In Huerta de Correo there will be 870 spaces, marked in blue (between Padre Andrés Llorden Avenue and Rosamunda Street); in Teatinos, another 640 in white (on Blas Infante Avenue, at the intersection with DR. Manuel Rodríguez); in Los Prados, there will be a total of 350 spaces marked in orange (on Paquiro Street); and in other locations in the surrounding area, there will be 1,600 spaces. The City Council recommends that drivers use the ring roads to access these.
– In addition to these, there are 2,990 parking spaces for motorcycles at the Palacio de Ferias. A total of 75 spaces will also be reserved for the exclusive use of people with reduced mobility at this location.
– The map also shows the streets that will be closed to traffic during the Fair, which is essential information for drivers traveling to Cortijo de Torres and the surrounding area.
– The municipal car parks located in the city center and its surroundings (Plaza de la Marina, San Juan de la Cruz, Tejón y Rodríguez, Alcazaba, Camas, Andalucía, Cervantes, and Salitre), which have a total of 5,066 spaces, will remain available during the Fair. What is driving the prostitution explosion in Malaga? The Guadalhorce Industrial Park calls for an “urgent” police plan to tackle the alarming growth in prostitution: {Translation, summary}
– A “historical problem that is growing again.” This is how the Association of Industrial Parks of Malaga (Apoma) describes the resurgence of prostitution that is taking place, “especially in 2025,” in the Guadalhorce business park, the largest in the city, with more than 1,500 companies and an area of 2.5 million square meters. According to this group, it is a “social issue” that is nevertheless “affecting coexistence, the business image, and security in the area.” They are calling for an “urgent plan” to reinforce police presence.
– According to estimates by the Guadalhorce Urban Conservation Entity (Eucc), visible prostitution on public streets “has grown significantly,” spreading to main streets such as Concepción Arenal, the area around the train station, and the recycling centre. Thousands of people go there every day to work, shop, or run errands, and it is also a transit area for schools, shopping centers, and residential neighbourhoods. This new expansion of the prostitution areas makes the current problem even more serious, as we are not just talking about an industrial area,“ argues Apoma. ”Urban growth and housing construction in the surrounding area have brought this reality closer to inhabited areas, reinforcing the need for definitive action,” they insist.
– “The National Police only acts in cases involving foreigners, and the Local Police only if they detect a pimp at the time.” Today, they say, “a patrol passes by once a day,” a deployment with which “it is impossible to curb this problem.”
– {Background info: Prostitution in Malaga, Spain, exists in a legal grey area. It is not illegal per se, but it is also not formally regulated as a legal job. Prostitution itself is decriminalized in all of Spain, meaning selling sex is not a crime. However, activities like pimping and profiting by exploiting prostitutes are illegal. Additionally, municipal regulations in Malaga prohibit activities linked to prostitution such as the offer, negotiation, and acceptance of sexual services on public streets if they disturb public coexistence, and these can lead to fines ranging from 750 to 1,500 euros. Malaga’s local laws also prohibit street prostitution near schools, homes, and businesses; sex work is moved to industrial estates where brothels operate.}

USA
The United States excludes Spain from a strategic maritime trade route: {Translation, summary}
– Spain has been excluded from a 2025 maritime agreement with the United States involving shipping routes between the US coasts and Asian ports, notably removing the port of Algeciras following a Federal Maritime Commission investigation. The probe centres on refusals in November 2024 for two US container ships destined for Israel at Algeciras. This exclusion redirects traffic to ports like Tangier-Med in Morocco. The original agreement included American President Lines and Maersk Line Limited, part of the US Maritime Security Program supporting Pentagon logistics.
– Spain’s government responded legally, citing national sovereignty but did not explain the denials. Washington interprets the move politically due to broader tensions involving Huawei data contracts and Spain’s reversal of its plans to buy US F-35 jets. Potential sanctions include fines of up to two million euros per voyage and port entry restrictions for Spanish vessels. The removal of Algeciras may harm bilateral trade, as Spain handles about 750,000 TEU annually with the US, involving valuable and strategic goods. This shift could diminish Spanish ports’ role in transatlantic commerce. The Champions Burger comes to Mijas from August 21 to 31 – in search of the best smash burger in Malaga: {Translation, summary}
– Mijas will host The Champions Burger ‘Smash Edition’ from 21 to 31 August at the Recinto Ferial Las Lagunas de Mijas. The event features 17 gourmet burger restaurants from across Spain, including local champion Dak Burger, competing with exclusive smash burger creations. Attendees can vote by scanning a QR code on purchase tickets, rating the bun, meat, ingredient combinations, presentation, and originality. This event marks the ninth stop of a national gastronomic tour that has attracted over 600,000 visitors.
– A smash burger is a type of burger made by pressing a ball of beef onto a hot griddle or pan to form a thin patty. This smashing technique creates a crispy, caramelised crust while keeping the inside juicy, enhancing both texture and flavour. Unlike a regular thick burger, the smash burger cooks quickly with crunchy edges, delivering a bold, unique eating experience.
– Gastronomic celebrities such as Gottan Grill, Best Burger in Spain and Europe 2024, and Faakin Smash by YouTuber Joe Burger, will offer special dishes. The event runs Monday to Thursday 6 pm–midnight, Friday to Sunday noon–midnight, opening on 21 August at 7 pm. The tour concludes in 2025 with a final contest among the top 20 rated restaurants nationwide. Sustainability efforts include reusable cups and recycling bins. Photo: MalagaHoy.
