ANDALUCÍA

The Andalusian reservoirs chain 13 weeks of losses and are located at 55.21%, 12 points more than the average of the decade: {Translation, summary:
– Andalusian reservoirs have decreased to 55.21% of capacity after losing 202 cubic hectometres in a week, storing 11,385 hm3, marking thirteen consecutive weeks of decline. Despite this, current reserves exceed last year’s 38.9% and the decade average of 43.1%.
– All river basins in Andalusia remain above their ten-year averages. The Guadalquivir basin, the largest, accounts for most of the loss with a 99 hm3 decrease, now at 48.7%, but surpasses last year’s storage by 957 hm3. The Andalusian Mediterranean basin fell to 50.8%, losing nine hm3 but remains well above last year and decade averages. The Tinto, Odiel and Piedras basins in Huelva hold 180 hm3, slightly below last year’s volume but above the decade average. Guadalete-Barbate in Cádiz dropped to 46.6%, yet is 367 hm3 above last year’s level. The Guadiana reservoirs lost 162 hm3 but still exceed last year and decade figures.
– Overall, Spain’s water reserves stand at 63.9% capacity, 9.9 points higher than in 2024.

MALAGA PROVINCE

Getting a driver’s license in Malaga is becoming increasingly difficult- five fewer examiners and 15,000 applicants on the waiting list: {Translation}
– “We are worse than ever,” asserts Antonio Martín, president of the Provincial Association of Driving Schools of Málaga (Apae), referring to the shortage of Traffic examiners plaguing the province. This deficit, although longstanding in the sector, has worsened in recent months with five of these professionals moving to other offices through a transfer competition. “Five have gone, but to positions such as window administrators because there are no examiner posts; then we also have a long-term absence and only one has come to replace them all,” laments the Apae leader. As a result, the number of candidates who have passed the theory test and are awaiting their chance to take the practical exam has risen to nearly 15,000. This is 1,000 more than three months ago and 3,000 more than a year ago.
– The long waiting list to take this test is a constant that fluctuates depending on the time of year. The worst period, with the highest numbers, is occurring right now, during the summer months, alongside Christmas and Easter, when candidates, mostly young people, are not in school and enrol at driving schools to obtain their licences. However, what is happening now, though it has a structural background, is worsened by the fact that there have never been so few examiners actually working, barely 25 for the whole province. That is without counting those on holiday.
– “They have every right to be on holiday, but the students also have their right to be examined. The fault lies with the administration,” adds Martín, who insists they are “moving heaven and earth,” holding meetings with the Directorate General of Traffic (Dgt) and the National Confederation of Driving Schools (Cnae), “so that Madrid gives the go-ahead to increase the number of examiners.” At present, according to him, someone prepared to take the practical test has to wait “up to three months,” and the same applies if they fail and must wait their turn to retake it.
– It is also notable that the number of examiners in Málaga has remained fairly steady, close to 30, for a decade, during which the examination system has changed. “Previously, each examiner conducted 16 tests daily, whereas now they do 12 because they are longer,” resulting in a “29% loss in testing capacity.” Nevertheless, filling some positions or even restoring numbers to 30 to replace those transferred would still be “insufficient” due to the “constant population growth.” This shortage, Martín adds, is widespread throughout Spain, although he believes it is even more acute in Málaga, as fewer personnel arrive there compared to other provinces. “The department makes an effort to optimise, but where there is none, there is none. It cannot continue like this,” he warns.
– In fact, Apae says they do not understand why new examiner positions are not announced, since they consider it a “very profitable” role. “With more examiners, more fees would be paid, more cars bought, more insurance covered, more maintenance done in workshops… Wealth would be generated. Many people obtain their licences to get a job or aspire to a better one,” assures Martín, who estimates the monthly benefit for the administration per professional to be 3,000 euros, once the job-related costs have been paid.

NERJA

Firefighters rescue a cat trapped in a tree in Nerja: {Translation, summary}
– In Nerja, the Provincial Fire Brigade of Málaga rescued a stray cat trapped atop a palm tree on Puente del Miso street. Alerted by the local police, firefighters used an aerial ladder vehicle to reach and safely retrieve the frightened animal. Despite the rescue, the cat tried to escape afterwards and refused to be caught again, behaviour common with strays. The rescue demonstrates the firefighters’ role in helping animals in distress, responding promptly to such calls from authorities or residents. CÓMPETA

Half a century of history for one of Malaga’s most unique festivals- this Friday, Cómpeta’s Night of Wine: {Translation}
– Next Friday, 15th August, Cómpeta will celebrate a very special day with the Noche del Vino, one of the most emblematic festivals of the Axarquía region in Málaga, which this year reaches its 50th anniversary. Declared of Tourist Interest by the Provincial Council of Málaga, this celebration pays tribute to a centuries-old tradition in which the town bade farewell to the grape harvesters before they set off to the farms to pick the grapes. The event combines culture, music, gastronomy and, naturally, the unmistakable Moscatel wine of the locality.
– The programme will begin at 11 a.m. with the Solemn Mass in Honour of Our Lady of the Assumption, followed by a parade to the rhythm of the fandangos of Cómpeta. At 12 noon, the Plaza de la Vendimia will host one of the most symbolic moments: the traditional grape treading, which this year will feature Mrs Patricia Navarro Pérez and Mr Francisco Salado as Honorary Treaders.
– At midday, at 1 p.m., the Vendimiadores de Honor 2025 awards will be presented to Mrs Rosario Requena Cabra, Mr José Rojo López and Mr Samuel Rodríguez Navas. Then, at 2.30 p.m., gastronomy will take centre stage with a traditional lunch based on flour migas, salad, cod, local grapes and wine from Cómpeta. This moment will be accompanied by live music from the fandangos group of Cómpeta, the flamenco troupe of Daniel Romero, Miguel Botana and a session by DJs Les Castizos, who will fill the Plaza de la Vendimia with rhythm well into the afternoon.
– The night will move to Plaza Almijara, where at 10 p.m. the fandangos of Cómpeta will be heard once more. At 10.30 p.m., Leovigildo López López will deliver the official opening speech, during which the Silver Grapes 2025 awards will also be presented. The grand finale will begin at 11 p.m. with the Flamenco Night, gathering two top-tier artists on stage: Estrella Morente and Paco Candela. Alongside them, the flamenco troupe of Sandra Cisneros will bring the power and art of dance to close what promises to be a historic evening.
– The celebration will even have a special prelude: on Thursday, 14th August, Plaza Almijara will host the festival preview with a performance by the Musarmonía Dance Group and a meeting of Rociero choirs featuring groups from Málaga, Cajiz, Torrox and Cómpeta, in homage to local roots and traditions.

ALMUÑÉCAR

Two dead after collision between a car and a motorcycle in Almuñécar: {Translation, summary}
– Two people have lost their lives in a traffic accident that occurred early Wednesday morning on the N-340 highway, near the town of Almuñécar in Granada.
– The accident took place at kilometre 321 of the aforementioned road around midnight, when emergency services received the first calls alerting them to a head-on collision between a car and a motorcycle, indicating that the occupants of the motorcycle had been seriously injured.
Personnel from the 061 Health Emergency Centre were dispatched to the scene, mobilizing two medical teams and a mobile ICU, as well as the Traffic Civil Guard and road maintenance personnel.
– Sources from the police have confirmed the death of a 48-year-old man and a 45-year-old woman, the riders of the motorcycle, in the accident.
– The accident caused the road to be closed at that kilometre point, although the situation returned to normal once the damaged vehicles were removed. Source, Spanish: https://www.axarquiaplus.es/dos-fallecidos-tras-la-colision-entre-un-turismo-y-una-moto-en-almunecar/

ANTEQUERA

“They have metal in their eyes,” say the parents of the children affected by the attraction in Valle de Abdalajís: {Translation, summary}
– At least fifteen children suffered eye irritations, discomfort, and injuries after visiting the bumper car attraction at the Valle de Abdalajís fair. The injuries were caused by small metal particles or grease from the ride’s electrical roof system.
– One affected boy, Daniel, struggled to sleep due to eye pain. After medical examination, a particle was removed from his cornea, but the special eye drops prescribed for treatment were sold out at the local pharmacy because so many children required them. Other cases involved children with multiple metal particles lodged in their eyes, leading to ulcers and significant discomfort. Many were referred to a specialist hospital in Málaga for treatment.
– Families expressed great indignation that the attraction continued operating despite early reports of incidents, believing many injuries could have been avoided if it had been closed sooner. Though reporting the situation to authorities, no prompt closure occurred. The families seek solutions to prevent future harm without harming anyone’s livelihood. Vélez-Málaga town hall promises 1.2 million euros for improvements in Benajarafe after years of complaints:
– After years of complaints and protests from residents, Vélez-Málaga town hall on the eastern Costa del Sol has announced it will allocate more than 1.2 million euros to various improvements in several of the residential areas of the coastal village of Benajarafe. The town hall will undertake work on lighting, sanitation and asphalting in Las Biznagas, La Esperanza, Paraíso del Sol, Condemar and Avenida Andalucía.
– Mayor of Vélez-Málaga, Jesús Lupiáñez, accompanied by the councillor for Infrastructure, Jesús María Claros, held a meeting with residents of the La Sirena residential area to inform them of the start of work to modernise the electrical installation in the area, which is already being carried out by Endesa. GASTRONOMIA

The restaurant in Malaga that has around 400 different dishes and up to 32 different types of croquettes- “It has a range of prices to suit all budgets.”: {Translation}
– “The restaurant with the most dishes in Spain,” thus defines the fashionable duo in gastronomic recommendations on social media, Clara and Jose, known as @malagadictos. They speak of the restaurant Selvática, in Torremolinos, one of those establishments offering much more than a culinary experience, but a life experience. If you glance at the menu, there is no doubt it is one of the restaurants with the most options to choose from in all of Málaga, with offerings to suit all tastes: from the most traditional to the most exotic, including top-quality meats, fresh seafood, rice dishes, and a list of up to thirty-two different types of croquettes, yes, thirty-two.
– “At least four hundred, three hundred and something,” Selvática replies when asked about the number of dishes on their extensive menu, which is certainly not for the impatient or indecisive: there is everything, and it is hard to settle on any one option. Salads, tartares, croquettes, sushi, starters of all kinds, pasta, gourmet eggs, caviar, seafood, cuts of bluefin tuna, oven-cooked meats, fried dishes, skewers, and aged meats that you can see in the fridges inside the restaurant.
– Selvática offers a spacious dining room, with capacity for around 400 diners, ensuring a pleasant gastronomic experience, fun if you catch one of their shows. “Imagine if Tarzan opened a restaurant in the very jungle of Málaga, with hundreds of hams hanging, thousands of bottles throughout the restaurant from which these original cocktails come. Fresh fish and seafood of every kind,” note the content creators, who are always on the lookout for the best options in Málaga and its province, this time in Torremolinos.
– Special mention must go to their thirty-two types of croquettes, all distinct, from their father and their mother. Here they are: Minhota ox croquettes, seafood, oxtail – the first three are the chef’s recommendations – mushroom, cocido stew, pringá, ham, cider chistorra sausage, Ardales chorizo, matured beef skewer, Rubia Gallega, tuna and red peppers, aubergines with honey and goat cheese, goat cheese with vegetables, squid in its ink, black cod and shellfish, blue cheese with caramelised onion, Black Angus, octopus, carabinero prawn, prawns in pil pil sauce, salmon with gorgonzola, blood sausage, Galician lacón ham with a touch of smoked paprika from La Vera, crab meat (txangurro), chicken with curry, suckling pig with apple, enchilada, Bolognese, carbonara, foie gras with ham, and pork loin in lard.
– “And the speciality of the Selva, aging chambers full of matured meats with a great quantity and variety of different cuts,” they finally add about Selvática, noting that despite its lavish decoration, spectacle, and vast menu, it offers “a price range to suit all budgets, ideal whether you come with friends or on a more special date.” Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/la-farola/restaurante-malaga-platos-distintos-croquetas-precio_0_2004552512.html

OTHER

“Pedro Sánchez, Son Of A B*tch”, The “Summer Song” That Sweeps Thru Spain: {Translation, summary}
– The angry crowds are no longer bothering with the “code” slur of “I like fruit” when Sanchez appears. This was used ironically or playfully alongside the slur “Pedro Sánchez, hijo de puta” with the rhyming “Me gusta la fruta”. Now they go straight to the naughty version.
– From the Velada del Año organised by the influencer Ibai Llanos to the latest gig of Juan Magán in Marbella last week, the chant against the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, calling him “hijo de puta” {“son of a bitch”} has spread to every corner of the country, showing the discontent, especially among the young, with the current course of the Government led by the socialist leader.
– One of the most notable incidents was that of the guitarist of the group Mägo de Oz, Víctor de Andrés, who, after hearing the audience shouting “Pedro Sánchez, son of a bitch!” took the microphone and said, “¡Sánchez, me cago en tus muertos!” {“Sánchez, I sh*t on your dead relatives!”}. He added, referring to the Koldo, Ábalos and Cerdán scandal: “Stop stealing from us, especially the cocaine and the whores.” Following this, the group was cancelled in a town governed by the PSOE.
– The chant first gained viral attention this summer, notably among Spaniards in Stuttgart before a Nations League football match against France and again before the final against Portugal. Sporting events such as an MMA event in Alicante and the influencer boxing event in the Velada de Ibai also saw the chant. More than 80,000 spectators at La Cartuja stadium echoed the call, reaching over nine million viewers online.
– The insult has spread to other venues including bullfights in Pontevedra, where a prominent bullfighter was injured. It has even interrupted live TV broadcasts.
– Attacks on Socialist headquarters are similarly growing. The “song of the summer” has also transformed into several attacks on Casas del Pueblo (political offices) which the socialists have scattered throughout Spain. One of the latest was the socialist headquarters in Vera (Almería), which was found on Monday morning with graffiti insulting such as “corrupt,” “prostitutes,” “cocaine addicts” or “traitors.” This vandalism, according to the PSOE, would be the 180th incident at socialist headquarters all over Spain in the last two years.

NEW LIFE CHURCH

New Life Church:
– Sunday Service:
Whether you live in Nerja or are visiting our area, you are very welcome to come and join us on Sundays at 11.00am. Join us for a time of Holy Spirit led worship and experience the presence of our God. Our teaching is Bible based as we honour God and obey His Word. During this time of uncertainty, God’s Word reminds us that the Gospel shines brightest in times of darkness. Our service lasts for about 1 hour and 30 mins. With Tea and Coffee afterwards.
– Prayer Meeting:
You are also welcome to join our prayer meetings on Wednesday mornings at 11.00am for 1 hour, where we meet for prayer and worship.
– Jesus said: “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me”. (John 14:6)
