SPAIN
He was late to respond to the DANA, the blackout and now the wildfires- The PP considers Sanchez’s climate pact a “smokescreen” and demands “extraordinary” means: {Translation, summary}
– The Popular Party criticises Pedro Sánchez for delaying promised resources amid widespread fires, dismissing his proposed State pact on the climate emergency as a distraction. Parliamentary spokesperson Ester Muñoz {pic} condemned the Government’s lack of coordination and contradictory statements by ministers, stressing the need for increased military involvement as UME forces (military firefighting crews) are fully deployed.
– She reproached Sánchez for not cutting short his holiday during the crisis and accused political opponents of exploiting the situation. Muñoz highlighted that 90% of fires result from human action, with simultaneous outbreaks and adverse weather complicating firefighting, worsened by rural abandonment. She reproached the central Government for focusing on blaming the Popular Party rather than providing aid and demanded an end to political opportunism. Muñoz asserted that an effective General State Budget would be the best State pact to properly address these emergencies.
– Asked about the political confrontation over responsibility for fire fighting between autonomous and state competencies, Muñoz reproached the central Government for focusing on blaming the PP without doing anything to help Spaniards. “I understand why people are fed up,” she criticised, “There is no tragedy in which the Government does not resort to political opportunism,” she said. “State pacts do not extinguish flames,” she emphasised. “What he intends is to politicise, confront and clash to talk about this instead of discussing more resources,” she criticised, recalling that we are facing an exceptional situation requiring greater military intervention. Source, Spanish: https://www.libertaddigital.com/espana/politica/2025-08-18/el-pp-considera-el-pacto-por-el-clima-una-cortina-de-humo-y-exige-medios-extraordinarios-a-sanchez-7286794/

Sánchez burns the truth- fires are not caused by climate change as he claims, but by forest neglect: {Translation}
– The President, Pedro Sánchez, repeated the term “climate emergency” up to ten times to blame climate change for the wildfires, while science and official data point to forest abandonment, biomass accumulation, and poor management as the true causes.
– During his visit to the Firefighting Operations Coordination Centre in Orense {pic}, Sánchez asserted that “the climate emergency ravages the world,” becoming increasingly severe, rapid, and frequent, particularly in places like the Iberian Peninsula. In just five minutes, he mentioned climate change as the cause of the fires nearly a dozen times. However, technical data and experts’ reports contradict this narrative, which sounds more like propaganda than science, despite his repeated claims.
– This political narrative conflicts with evidence. Sánchez recalled that the government declared a nationwide climate emergency in 2018 and now promises a “grand State pact” to mitigate and adapt to the climate emergency. Yet geologists Enrique Ortega Gironés and José Antonio Sáenz de Santa María Benedet, with over forty years’ experience, argue that fires are due to poor land management, not climate.
– The uncomfortable reality for the government is that 95% of fires in Spain result from human causes, neglect, carelessness, or intent, while only 5% have natural causes like lightning. There is no clear correlation between rising temperatures and fire frequency, but there is with rural depopulation, extensive livestock abandonment, and vegetation fuel build-up. Forests, abandoned and unmaintained, accumulate up to 40 tonnes of biomass per hectare in some areas, creating a powder keg. While this does not cause more fires, it results in more intense blazes in an increasingly dense, fuel-laden landscape. Economically, as Castilla-La Mancha’s Sustainable Development Minister Mercedes Gómez remarked, extinguishing one hectare costs 20,000 euros, money spent on suppression rather than prevention.
– If Sánchez heeded the scientists he cites, resources would be better used for forest management, generating rural jobs and reducing fire risk before ignition occurs. The government’s selective use of data disregards history. In 2022, Spain faced a severe fire season blamed on “evil climate change.” Yet geologists showed that during the last third of the previous century, before global warming was prominent, fires were more numerous and severe. In the 1980s and 1990s, over 25,000 fires occurred annually, compared to 9,000 to 10,000 now. In 1994, an early heatwave burned 335,000 hectares, much more than recent summers.
– Official statistics confirm that 2025 fires are not unusual, despite propaganda framing them as evidence of climatic apocalypse. The historical record shows no sustained fire increase attributable to climate.
– When Sánchez says “we must anticipate a better response to the worsening and acceleration of the climate emergency,” he conceals the real acceleration: forest abandonment. Rural depopulation has left forests unpastured, unmanaged, and with undergrowth unchecked. As Dr Antonio Pulido notes, forests were easier to protect when fragmented; now they have spread over abandoned fields becoming vast continuous thickets.
– Geologists Ortega Gironés and Sáenz de Santa María already warned in 2022 that poorly conceived and executed forestry policies have led to the current crisis, hiding political incapacity behind the climate excuse.
– The government, more accurately Sánchez, promises climate pacts but avoids essential, uncomfortable measures experts have long demanded: promoting extensive livestock grazing as natural firebreaks; encouraging sustainable forestry and wood use; reducing bureaucratic barriers to preventive actions in parks and protected areas; and redirecting firefighting funds towards rural employment and prevention.
– As Dr Pulido reminds, “there is no effective forestry policy without persistence,” meaning prevention requires constant planning and continuity, not transient fixes or grand paper pacts. Instead, the official discourse repeats that “the climate emergency ravages the world,” as if mere repetition could obscure the smoke suffocating Galicia, Castilla y León, and Orense. These summer fires do not prove a climate emergency but rather the failure of forestry policy that has abandoned the forests.
– Sánchez prefers to frame the debate on climate alone because it is easier to blame a global phenomenon than assume responsibility. But the facts are clear: it is not the climate burning, it is political neglect. – The Torrox City Council has already completed the work of artificial grass installation within the first phase of the works of the Sports complex which is built on the grounds of the Cortijo Sevilla, in the urbanisation Santa Rosa. The venue is expected to open its doors in September, for the start of the new sports season of the El Morche Recreational Club. RINCÓN DE LA VICTORIA
Four arrested in Rincón de la Victoria for several violent robberies: {Translation}
– The Civil Guard, in Operation Alcamsol, has arrested four people for the crimes of burglary, theft of mopeds, and counterfeiting currency in the town of Rincón de la Victoria.
The investigation began at the end of May following an operation by the Rincón de la Victoria Local Police, in which a vehicle was seized and various materials were apprehended, such as wiring of different thicknesses and lengths, as well as valuable tools.
– Following this intervention, the Civil Guard launched an investigation to clarify the facts, confirming that a robbery had taken place that same night at the municipal warehouse of the Rincón de la Victoria Town Council’s operational services, with the stolen items matching the materials being transported in this vehicle. After the investigations carried out, and with the collaboration of the Local Police of Rincón de la Victoria, four individuals were identified as the alleged perpetrators of the crimes. The officers also detected that these same individuals were involved in several crimes that had occurred in the municipality and in the city of Málaga.
– Among other crimes, these individuals had put counterfeit banknotes into circulation through cash payments to fast food delivery drivers. These incidents were reported by the employees of the delivery companies who received the counterfeit banknotes. In addition, two of them have also been accused of stealing three mopeds, which have been recovered and returned to their rightful owners.
– As a result, last June, these four individuals were located and arrested for the crimes of robbery, moped theft, and counterfeiting, and were brought before the judicial authorities. This operation was carried out by officers from the Rincón de la Victoria Civil Guard Headquarters with the collaboration of the local police. MOTRIL
What is a thermal blowout, the strange phenomenon that took place this Sunday in Motril?: {Translation}
– What seemed a calm summer afternoon on the beaches of Motril, Salobreña, Carchuna and Torrenueva in Granada turned into an episode of unexpected meteorological risk. At 19:50, a thermal burst caused a sudden rise in temperature to 40.1 ºC and wind gusts reaching 86.8 km/h, according to official records.
– The phenomenon surprised bathers and lifeguards, causing the uncontrolled flight of umbrellas, inflatables and paddleboards, and necessitating the immediate evacuation of the beaches. The Civil Guard rescued three people in the sea, while two young men had to be assisted by a motorboat after experiencing difficulties in navigation. Furthermore, a waterspout formed off Torrenueva, which prompted the activation of an emergency operation involving Maritime Rescue, lifeguards and security forces.
– Shortly before 19:20, the sky over the Costa Tropical began to darken and the atmosphere became increasingly hot and stifling. The Andalusian Emergencies Coordination Centre 112 received a report at 19:45 from the Torrenueva Costa beach service alerting of “two tornadoes and a waterspout” and subsequently more than twenty fires were reported.
– What is a thermal burst? The phenomenon that struck the Costa Tropical was a thermal burst, also called a warm burst, a type of descending air gust that originates in storm clouds such as cumulus or cumulonimbus. It occurs when a current of air descends through a very dry and warm layer, evaporating moisture and heating by adiabatic compression until it reaches the ground as a sudden, dry and extremely warm gust. The process follows several phases: it begins in the decaying storm cloud, the air descends and cools, compresses and finally bursts at the surface, spreading forcefully in all directions. However, there are two types: the dry burst, when precipitation evaporates before touching the ground, and the wet burst, when rain arrives accompanying the gust of air. Although it usually lasts between five and thirty minutes, its intensity can be very high; when its horizontal extension is less than four kilometres, it is called a microburst.
– Differences from a tornado explained. Although the effects may resemble those of a tornado, the phenomena are different. A thermal burst causes damage in a line or radially from the impact point, whereas a tornado leaves curved traces and a path of destruction due to its swirling flow. In Anglo-Saxon meteorology, there is a similar phenomenon known as a heat burst, which also combines intense wind and abrupt temperature rises in the final phases of nocturnal storms.
– The episode in Motril highlighted how sudden and dangerous these events can be. Although exceptional, the thermal burst is a documented phenomenon in various parts of the world, characterised by its intensity and the difficulty of anticipating it. Within minutes, what seemed a normal summer afternoon transformed into an emergency scene that left bathers and locals with a scare difficult to forget.

Man arrested for arson of a church in Albuñol (Granada) – “If we hadn’t acted, the whole church would have burned down.”: {Translation, summary}
– On Sunday, the Civil Guard arrested a 21-year-old Moroccan man for starting a serious fire in the church of Santiago, in El Pozuelo, a district of the municipality of Albuñol (Granada). The attack was carried out at around 3:00 p.m. and caused significant material damage. The quick action of the neighbours, some of whom were injured, prevented the church from being reduced to ashes.
– A neighbour told the newspaper Ideal how those tragic minutes unfolded: “We kept hearing banging, so we called the Civil Guard. The door was blocked because the individual had destroyed the lock. We had to use everything we could find to break it down and get in, but it was impossible. Even more so with all the smoke coming out, because he had set it on fire.“ He added that, ”in the end, nine neighbours managed to open the church and the young man ran out into the street. He was arrested, and we proceeded to extinguish the flames with hoses from our own homes. If we hadn’t done so, the entire church would have burned down. Nothing would have been left.” Source, Spanish: https://www.libertaddigital.com/sucesos/2025-08-18/detenido-un-marroqui-por-quemar-una-iglesia-en-albunol-granada-si-no-llegamos-a-actuar-la-iglesia-arde-entera-7286691/

‘Make Our Streets Safe Again!’ – Thousands Protest Migrant Hotels Across England as Movement Grows:
– Protests against migrant hotels continue across England as native Britons rage over the government putting local women and children at risk by placing unvetted young male asylum seekers in their midst.
– Multiple towns and cities in England saw locals pour out onto the streets again over the weekend, in a continuation of the protest movement that was sparked in June in the town of Epping in Essex after a hotel migrant from Ethiopia, Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu, was accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl just days after arriving in Britain illegally by boat across the English Channel.
– Hundreds gathered outside the Bell Hotel on Sunday, which was used to house the Ethiopian migrant, among others. Essex Police said that the protest was held peacefully and did not result in any arrests.
– Hundreds more gathered on Sunday in the Norwich town of Bowthorpe outside of the Brook Hotel, again, in response to the government commandeering the facility to house supposed asylum seekers. As with other similar protests, the demonstration saw mothers and other women dressed in pink to highlight the threat that young military age male migrants being dumped into their communities pose to women and girls. According to the Norwich Evening News, participants carried placards reading “Starmer I am not far right! Just a concerned grandmother” and “make our streets safe again”.
– Meanwhile, in addition to organised street protests, others have been engaging in another form of civil disobedience, with natives hoisting British and English flags — which have become symbols, remarkably, of resistance within their own country — in their locales on street fixtures such as lamp posts. The trend appears to have begun in the multicultural city of Birmingham, where the left-wing Labour council has come under fire for taking down UK flags while refusing to remove Palestinian flags without police escort for fear of reprisals. Bolivia dumps the extreme left and will have an unprecedented second round between two right-wing candidates: {Translation, summary}
– Bolivia held a long-awaited election day on Sunday to elect Luis Arce’s successor as president of the country. The most notable news is the enormous failure of the Movement to Socialism, the MAS of the former president Evo Morales, and the confirmation that there will be a second round for the first time in the highland country between two right-wing candidates far from the trends of the last two decades with an extreme left that has left Bolivia in a very serious social and economic crisis. Tennis News- Sinner retires at 5-0 down in first set, Alcaraz wins Cincinnati Open:
– The world No 1 Sinner was seen telling the umpire: “I feel like I can collapse at any moment” as he retired.
– The Spaniard got his revenge for the the Wimbledon final, with the world No 1 unable to complete the clash.
– The Cincinnati Open final has come to a disappointing end, as reigning champion Jannik Sinner was forced to retire just 23 minutes into his highly-anticipated meeting with Carlos Alcaraz. The world No. 1 looked out of sorts from the word go – he was broken to love in the first game, and things went from bad to worse.
– Sinner sprayed errors across the court and walked gingerly in between points. He was broken for the third time to go 5-0 down and called the trainer to the court. After having a chat with them, Sinner apologised and said he could not continue. The Italian looked devastated as he buried his head in his hands, while the umpire announced that he had retired due to “illness”. FINANCIAL
The reality that Sánchez will deny- bankruptcies are up 6.7%: {Translation, summary}
– Sánchez’s economic rocket has long been showing signs of significant structural problems. One of these indicators is the number of business bankruptcies and insolvency proceedings, which have risen sharply so far this year. This is according to the latest report by Informa D&B on insolvency proceedings and dissolutions, which shows that up to July, insolvency proceedings had increased by 6.7% compared to the same period last year. Is it coincidence that the number of multiple job-holding individuals has grown by almost 50% since 2020?
– The report shows that “during the first seven months, there was an increase in the number of insolvencies in most of the autonomous communities.” Specifically, Catalonia and the Balearic Islands stand out, with increases of 92% and 34%, respectively, during this period. On the other hand, it also notes that “bankruptcies are increasing in most sectors.” In this regard, the main increases occurred in the construction and real estate sector, with a 59% increase, and in industry, where they grew by 48%.
– {Editor’s Note: The above article forgot about Andalucia! Here is some related info to fill in the blanks. The total number of insolvency proceedings filed in the first quarter of 2025 in Spain amounted to 18,017. Catalonia was the autonomous community with the highest number of insolvency proceedings, with 4,493 proceedings. This was followed by Madrid with 3,116, Andalucia with 2,549 and the autonomous community of Valencia with 2,129 insolvency proceedings. Personal Insolvency proceedings amounted to 15,833, thus recording an increase of 44% compared to the same quarter in 2024. Catalonia tops the list with 3,656 private insolvencies filed, accounting for 23.09% of the total. It is followed by Madrid with 2,839, Andalusia with 2,338 and Valencia with 1,866.
