Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

SPAIN
The Government will declare catastrophic zone the areas affected by fires: {Translation}
– The Prime Minister has announced that next Tuesday the Council of Ministers will declare a state of disaster for the regions most affected by the devastating wave of forest fires currently ravaging northwestern Spain, with particular failure in the provinces of Orense, Zamora, León, and the community of Extremadura. From the command post in Jarilla (Cáceres), where the response in this region is being coordinated, Pedro Sánchez stressed that in a crisis of this nature, “institutional loyalty, a willingness to collaborate and regional and international solidarity are essential.”
– Accompanied by the president of the Regional Government of Extremadura, María Guardiola, the head of the executive announced that he is preparing aid for the fires once the “economic impact” of the crisis and the state resources that will accompany “the task of reconstruction” have been quantified.
– Sánchez also took advantage of his appearance to defend the need for a state pact to mitigate the effects of climate change, as he has put on the table and which the PP has dismissed as a “smokescreen.” “Science and common sense tell us that the climate is changing, that the climate emergency is changing and that it is having an increasing impact,” he argued. “There is only one valid response: institutional unity.” Source, Spanish: https://www.diariosur.es/nacional/gobierno-declarara-zona-catastrofica-areas-afectadas-incendios-20250819133138-ntrc_amp.html
By the way, they are going to wait a week before declaring the emergency mentioned in the previous article! – The Council of Ministers will recognize the emergency in areas with fires and there will be help for reconstruction, but not until after August 26!: {Translation}
– The president of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, announced on Tuesday that within a week, on August 26, the Council of Ministers will proceed to the declaration of areas affected by an emergency of civil protection to the areas that are suffering forest fires and has committed to collaborate from the Executive to the reconstruction of them.
– This has been said in statements to the media in the farm (Cáceres) after the visit he has made to the advanced command post of Jarilla, accompanied by the president of Extremadura, the ‘popular’ María Guardiola; Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska, and the Government delegate in the community, José Luis Quintana.
– This official statement of “areas affected by an emergency of civil protection,” said Sánchez, implies the “commitment” of the government to also face the task of reconstruction, once “the economic impact is extinguished and known in each and every one of the pockets of the neighbors of the affected municipalities.” In this context, the chief of the Executive has stressed that this reconstruction work will also “logically” resources of the General State Administration. MALAGA PROVINCE
Around 400 people over the age of 100 live in Malaga, most of them women: {Translation, summary}
– There are 378 people aged 100 or over living in the province of Malaga. Of these, the majority, 289, are women, compared to 89 men. This means that 75%, or three out of every four centenarians, are women. The situation on the Costa del Sol is not very different—although there are some differences—from that in Spain as a whole. In total, as of July 1, 2025, according to figures from the latest Continuous Population Survey published by the National Statistics Institute (INE) a few days ago, there were 19,190 people aged 100 or over living in the country, of whom 15,625 were women, i.e., just over 81%. And this is precisely what happens in Andalusia, with 1,574 women out of the 1,940 individuals aged 100 or over residing in the region, meaning that women also represent just over 80% of the longest-lived people in the community.
– So what happens in the province is somewhat—albeit very slightly—different from what happens in Spain and Andalusia as a whole, because in Malaga, centenarians account for a slightly lower percentage of the total number of people over 100 years old (81% nationally and regionally, compared to 75% provincially). In any case, all the figures show that women live longer than men in all regions. Source, Spanish: https://www.diariosur.es/malaga/malaga-viven-cerca-400-personas-cien-anos-20250818002014-nt_amp.html

The Provincial Council promotes forest cleaning to prevent fires and expands the use of forest biomass with an investment of almost €16 million: {Translation, summary}
– The Provincial Council of Malaga is firmly committed to the use of biomass as an energy source, which also serves to clean up mountains and forest areas, thus contributing to fire prevention. The investments that have already been made and those planned for this year amount to almost €16 million, both in the installation of boilers and biomass and heating networks and in the construction of a centre for the storage of plant waste in Yunquera and Algatocín. The actions have been carried out and are being implemented in the nine municipalities of the Sierra de las Nieves and will be extended to a dozen towns in the Serranía de Ronda, in the Genal and Guadiaro valleys.
– The president of the Malaga Provincial Council, Francisco Salado, explained that the serious forest fires that Spain is suffering this summer highlight the importance of cleaning and silvicultural (science of forest management) treatments in mountains and forests so that the risks or effects of fire can be reduced. UKRAINE WAR
Focus on security guarantees as Ukraine summit leaves path to peace unclear:
– Ukraine and its European allies have been buoyed by Donald Trump’s promise of security guarantees for Kyiv to help end the war in Ukraine but face many unanswered questions, including how willing Russia will be to play ball.
– Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy hailed Monday’s extraordinary summit at the White House with the U.S. president as a “major step forward” towards ending Europe’s deadliest conflict in 80 years and towards setting up a trilateral meeting with Russia’s Vladimir Putin and Trump in the coming weeks.
– But beyond the optics, the path to peace remains deeply uncertain and Zelenskiy may be forced to make painful compromises to end the war. While the Washington talks allowed for a temporary sense of relief in Kyiv, there was no let-up in the fighting. Russia launched 270 drones and 10 missiles in an overnight attack on Ukraine, the Ukrainian air force said, the largest this month. The energy ministry said Russia had targeted energy facilities in the central Poltava region, home to Ukraine’s only oil refinery, causing big fires. Zelenski offers Trump deal to buy weapons for 77,000 million euros (EU funds, of course) in exchange for security guarantees: {Translation}
– The president of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenski, has confirmed that he has proposed this Monday to his American counterpart, Donald Trump, the purchase of 90,000 million dollars (just over 77,200 million euros) in weapons of the American country through the financing of European allies, in exchange for Washington’s security guarantees.
– This has been said in a press conference in which it has influenced that the proposal remains low discussion and that no agreement has been reached, although it could be formalized in next week or ten days, according to the American television network CNN. Kyiv’s approach also includes the manufacture of drones, for which he also hopes to reach an agreement with Washington.
– For his part, President Trump explained that security guarantees to Ukraine are still negotiating with NATO allies, but that Washington “will be involved” in the process. “We are going to discuss it today, but we will give you very good protection and security,” he argued.
– Trump announced last month the sending of Patriot Antialea Defense systems to Ukraine, ensuring that it will be the European Union who will pay for them through NATO, who has assumed the coordination of the armament supply to Kyiv.
– {Editor’s Note: EU pop. = 450.4 million. €77,000,000,000 / 450,400,000 = €170.96 per person of our money will go to US for weapons sent to Ukraine. -Ed.}

TECH
EU Apple Users Have Trump To Thank For Preserving Their Privacy- Gabbard says UK scraps demand for Apple to give backdoor access to data:
– Britain abandoned its demand that Apple provide so-called backdoor access to any encrypted user data stored in the cloud, U.S. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard said Monday. Gabbard indicated London and Washington had resolved their high-stakes dispute over electronic privacy, writing on X that she and President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance spent the “past few months” working with the U.K. government. “As a result, the UK agreed to drop its mandate for Apple to provide a ‘back door’ that would have enabled access to the protected encrypted data of American citizens and encroached on our civil liberties,” she said.
– The dispute surfaced at the start of the year with a news report that British security officials had issued the U.S. tech giant with a secret order requiring the creation of backdoor access to view fully encrypted material. Apple challenged the order, which raised fears of electronic spying by national security officials. The British government reportedly served Apple with what is known as a “technical capability notice” ordering it to provide the access under a sweeping law called the Investigatory Powers Act of 2016, which has been dubbed the snoopers’ charter.
– The U.K. Home Office did not respond directly to Gabbard’s statement, saying it “does not comment on operational matters, including confirming or denying the existence of such notices.” Full article: https://www.the-independent.com/news/world/americas/apple-tulsi-gabbard-washington-director-of-national-intelligence-home-office-b2810240.html
RELIGION
Christian Revival- Belief in God Triples Among 18-24 Year Old Britons:
– Christianity is experiencing a revival among young people in Britain, with the number of 18-24 year olds believing in God increasing by nearly 200 per cent since 2021. After decades of Christianity declining in Britain — falling to such an extent that the 2021 census found that Christians had become a minority in England and Wales amid the rise of atheism and Islam — there appears to be an indication of a trend reversal and possible revival of the faith in the United Kingdom.
– According to YouGov’s tracker of religious belief, conducted twice per year, the number of 18 to 24-year-olds professing belief in God rose from 16 per cent in August of 2021 to 45 per cent as of January of this year, representing a 181 per cent increase in just three and a half years, GB News reported. A smaller, but still significant, increase was also registered among those aged between 25 and 49 years old, with the tracker recording a jump from 21 per cent in 2021 to 33 per cent in 2025. This has coincided with a 56 per cent rise in those who attend church at least once a month between 2018 and 2024, with the number of regular churchgoers increasing from 3.7 million to 5.8 million.
