Firefighters demand political resignations and denounce the “lack of coordination” in firefighting strategies – “reckless patches and genuine absurdities”: {Translation}
– The United Coordinating Body of Professional Firefighters (CUBP) has regretted the “lack of coordination” in response to fires and is calling for the “immediate dismissal” of technicians and politicians responsible for “reckless strategies”. In their view, “the dramatic situation is not only a consequence of climate change, but often the result of poor planning and flawed extinguishing plans”. Firefighters have warned that the “political blockade” of the Coordination Framework Law “threatens citizen safety in these disasters and other climate emergencies that require rapid and unified responses”.
– According to the association, one example of this lack of coordination is that each administration uses communication systems that are not integrated, “so at times mobile phones are the only means for commanding officers to communicate, with the resulting risk of saturation”.
– On other occasions, “personnel deployed to incidents must wait a long time for instructions from the fire director due to miscoordination, which also hinders the deployment of specialised equipment and vehicles”. In response, firefighters report that “solidarity strategies” between autonomous communities “have been reckless patches and genuine absurdities”. For instance, in the Community of Madrid, it was decided, amid the “collapse” in Castile and León due to “lack of resources”, to cover all incidents of any type in Ávila and Segovia provinces by deploying from Madrid, “delaying arrival times and favouring initial fire spread”. They therefore demand “the immediate dismissal of the responsible technicians and politicians”.
– The firefighters also call for the unlocking of the Framework Law. In response to the Government’s proposal for a Climate Change State Pact, they recalled that there exists “a perfect tool to improve the operability of over 20,000 personnel protecting citizens against fires”, referring to the Coordination Framework Law first registered in 2018, “which was part of the current Government’s programme and is inexplicably blocked in the Ministry of the Interior”.
– According to CUBP president Israel Naveso, “the dramatic situation we face is not solely a result of climate change, but also due to poor planning, absence of human and material resources, and inadequate extinguishing strategies”. In his view, a framework law “would provide direct support to citizens, politicians, and all firefighting bodies without exception: forest, municipal, consortia, regional, and aerial. It would dignify the public service and end the improvisation that repeats every summer”. Political tension rises- the PP calls the director of Civil Protection a “pyromaniac” and she tells them to “step aside” if they do not “contribute”: {Translation}
– Although the fire situation does not appear to be worsening, political tension is rising. The Deputy Secretary for Regional Coordination of the PP, Elías Bendodo, on Thursday called the Director General of Civil Protection, Virginia Barcones {pic}, a “pyromaniac” for suggesting that some regional governments had overreacted in order to attack the Executive. In response, Barcones told Bendodo that if he was not going to “contribute” he should “step aside”, while both the Government and the PSOE demand an apology from the Popular Party.
– “The Director General of Civil Protection is another pyromaniac, she has dedicated her statements to insulting regional governments, it is impossible to find solutions like this,” said Bendodo outside the PP headquarters in Madrid. He escalated his rhetoric and questioned how a Director General of Civil Protection could claim that there had been overreaction.
– He stated that regional governments had exhausted all resources before turning to the Central Government for support, which “should not happen” because the Executive “should offer them before the regional governments ask”. He added that this occurs because “the DNA of this Government” is “arrogance”.
– Barcones expressed strong indignation at Bendodo’s words, calling for “a little restraint, calm and responsibility”. “Calling any official a pyromaniac… he is accusing me of a crime, he is saying I am a criminal. How far are we going to go,” she emphasised. She urged “those who do not contribute to step aside” and assured she will continue “working” to prevent fires from reigniting. “I would ask that they stop insulting me. But if they think they must insult me, they will not prevent me from doing my job and defending the truth,” she insisted. Regarding the recent political clashes, Barcones added that “there is a point” that even makes her “weary” to think that people with “institutional responsibility” instead of supporting Civil Protection, are attempting “to undermine it”. “They can continue seeking the point, the comma or the hyphen to divert attention,” she said.
– Indignation in the Government is high. Sources at Moncloa (President’s residence) consider Bendodo’s words “disrespectful” and “indecorous”. They believe the PP is showing that its sole aim is to oppose the Government, as evidenced by other statements from the same Deputy Secretary.
– From Ferraz (location in Madrid of the PSOE- Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party- headquarters), they demand Bendodo’s “immediate retraction” for his insults “in the midst of the wildfire wave”. They criticise the “incendiary rhetoric” of the Popular Party and assert that “Feijóo is the dirtiest politician in this country, and his team is not far behind”. Socialist sources accuse the PP of launching a political and media “hunt” and urge them to decide whether they want to be “a small appendage of the far right” or “a state-worthy right-wing party compatible with Europe”, adding that they are “heading towards the former”.
– Bendodo stated that the Director, “who is supposed to be a professional addressing technical issues and how she could assist in extinguishing the fires, is another pyromaniac who has insulted the regional governments”. He also accused the Government of “disloyalty” in managing the forest fires and seeing each “crisis” as an “opportunity” to politically “harm” the PP. “And they are wrong because what they do harms the citizens,” he added. He once again dismissed the climate change State Pact proposed by the Prime Minister. “The State Pact needed in our country is a State Pact against Pedro Sánchez that should go as soon as possible for the good of all Spaniards,” he concluded. A PSOE deputy argues that Spain needs immigrants, asking, “Who is going to clean the elderly’s asses?”: {Translation}
– On Wednesday, PP spokesperson in Congress Ester Muñoz demanded that the PSOE “immediately rectify” the comments made by Víctor Gutiérrez, LGBTI secretary of the Federal Executive and member of Congress, who said that Spain needs immigrants to “wipe the asses of the elderly.”
– In a message posted on social network X, Ester Muñoz commented on a video showing part of Gutiérrez’s appearance on Cuatro’s program “En boca de todos,” in which he is heard asking, “Who is going to wipe the grandparents’ asses?”
– Specifically, in a debate with Vox’s security chief, Samuel Vázquez, the socialist leader denies the viability of the mass deportations of migrants promised by Vox: “Who is going to wipe the grandparents’ asses? Who is going to pick the fruit in the fields? Who is going to do all those things that you don’t want to do?“ says Víctor Gutiérrez, emphasizing that ”foreigners often come to do the jobs that Spaniards don’t want to do.”
– Muñoz has described the comment as “embarrassing” and has called on the PSOE to take action: “The Socialist Party argues that we need immigrants to wipe our grandparents’ bottoms,” wrote the PP leader, referring to Gutiérrez as a “national socialist deputy.” “That is their humanity and their progressivism. I hope they rectify this immediately,” she demanded. Source, Spanish: https://www.20minutos.es/nacional/diputado-psoe-defiende-espana-necesita-inmigrantes-limpiar-culo-abuelos_6237828_0.html

Petrol prices continue to fall in the middle of summer and filling up the tank is up to 5.7 euros cheaper: {Translation, summary}
– Petrol and diesel prices in Spain continue to decline during the summer, reaching new lows. Filling an average diesel tank now costs 77.77 euros, 2.14 euros less than last year, while petrol costs 81.34 euros, saving 5.7 euros.
– The EU Oil Bulletin confirms a further weekly fall in August, with diesel down 0.7 per cent and petrol 0.27 per cent. Diesel has now been priced below petrol for 129 weeks, returning to pre-Russian invasion patterns.
– Compared with summer 2022 peaks, both fuels remain substantially cheaper, with petrol at 1.479 euros per litre and diesel at 1.414 euros. Fuel prices depend on several factors, including crude oil costs, taxes, logistics, and margins, with changes in crude not immediately reflected in pump prices. Currently, Spain’s petrol and diesel prices remain below EU and eurozone averages, providing relief for drivers. Judge Peinado amends his ruling to expand the case against Begoña Gómez: {Translation, summary}
– Judge Juan Carlos Peinado {pic} has widened the criminal investigation into Begoña Gómez {pic}, wife of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, by adding embezzlement to the existing list of charges that already included corruption, influence peddling, misappropriation, and professional intrusion. Her Moncloa adviser is also being investigated. This move comes after months of contradictions, as Peinado had previously dismissed the same charge. The new decision follows pressure from the Provincial Court, which considered that public resources may have been diverted for Gómez’s private benefit.
– Central to the case are two emails sent in 2021 by the adviser to executives of Reale, a company financing the university chair directed by Gómez. In those communications, the adviser, on behalf of Gómez, sought continued sponsorship for her academic activities. According to Vox, which filed the original complaint, this demonstrates the use of public office to promote private projects, and it implicates not only Gómez but also her adviser and former Moncloa official Francisco Martín.
– Although witnesses argued her adviser’s appointment was legally valid, the evidence points to a blurred line between Gómez’s private academic interests and state resources. The Provincial Court stressed that the prime minister’s wife may have exercised influence through her position in Moncloa and benefitted from an “aura of power” tied to her role.
– Despite initial reluctance, Peinado has now summoned both Gómez and her adviser to testify. The case raises broader concerns about whether Gómez systematically used public structures and staff to secure personal or professional advantages. Koldo Case Update- Tragsatec and Ineco detail to the National Court that they paid 44,000 euros to Ábalos’ ex-girlfriend: {Translation}
– Tragsatec and Ineco have informed the judge of the National Court who is investigating the Koldo case that they paid Jessica Rodríguez [pic], former partner of the former Minister of Transport José Luis Ábalos {pic}, a total of 43,978.40 euros during the period she was employed in both public companies. This is recorded in the documentation provided by both public companies to Central Court of Instruction Number 2 after the examining magistrate requested the Central Operational Unit (UCO) of the Civil Guard to obtain such information.
– Specifically, Tragsatec has confirmed that it paid 9,500.54 euros gross to Rodríguez between March and September 2021 for her work in that company. Ineco, for its part, has specified that it paid 34,477.86 euros between March 2019 and December 2021.
– It should be recalled that last February Rodríguez herself admitted before the Supreme Court in her statement as a witness that she never carried out any work in those companies, although she did receive the salary during the time she was employed.
– The disclosure that Tragsatec and Ineco paid Jessica Rodríguez—a woman who acknowledged she carried out no actual work—the sum of €43,978.40 during her employment in both public companies underscores a severe breach of public trust and internal controls. Her hiring, widely seen as politically motivated due to her connection with former minister José Luis Ábalos—and apparently orchestrated through figures like Koldo García and possibly enabled by officials such as Isabel Pardo de Vera—has become a pivotal element in the broader Koldo Case, which involves allegations of corruption, misuse of public funds, and abuse of influence within the Ministry of Transport. RINCÓN DE LA VICTORIA
Rincón de lah Victoria manages 77 feline colonies with the CER method: {Translation}
– The Rincón de la Victoria Town Council, through its Department of Health, is continuing with the cat colony management program approved in 2023, in compliance with Law 7/2023 on the Protection of Animal Rights and Welfare.
– Since its launch, a total of 77 colonies have been registered in the municipal census, accounting for 1,079 cats. Of these, 673 have been sterilized and 148 have been microchipped, thanks to the rigorous application of the CER method (capture, sterilization, and return).
– The procedure, which guarantees the welfare of the animals and health control, consists of capturing the cats in the colony, subjecting them to a veterinary examination, sterilizing them, identifying them with microchips, administering mandatory vaccinations and deworming, and finally returning them to their colony of origin.
– The City Council reminds residents that any lack of control in these colonies usually occurs only when food is provided indiscriminately.
– The program is being developed in collaboration with the Official College of Veterinarians of Malaga and five local clinics that are members of the CER.2 agreement. Since 2023, four training sessions have been held with 108 participants, including workshops for volunteer catchers, who now have the necessary accreditation to carry out these tasks. Rincón de la Victoria was a pioneer in 2022 when it signed the CER.1 agreement and was the second municipality in the province to join CER.2, after Torremolinos.

A man is arrested after setting fire to a bar for not putting mayonnaise in his sandwich: {Translation, summary}
– The Civil Guard has arrested a resident of Córdoba who set fire to a bar in Los Palacios and Villafranca (Seville). The man had asked for mayonnaise for the sandwich he was eating and, after receiving a refusal, doused the establishment with gasoline and set it on fire.
– As confirmed by the Civil Guard, the detainee, who is charged with crimes of damage and fire with danger to people, entered the establishment at around 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. There, he ordered, among other drinks, a montadito, requesting at that moment that they give him mayonnaise, although the waiter told him that they did not have at the bar.
– Once on the terrace, he asked the same question to a waitress, who gave him the same answer, at which point he asked the same question. The man got up from his chair, went to a nearby gas station and returned with a bottle of gasoline, which he sprayed on the bar counter, which he set on fire. Agents of the Local Police of Los Palacios immediately arrived at the premises and, helped by a waitress who followed the perpetrator, were able to arrest him.
– José Antonio Caballero, the owner of the bar, called Las Postas, has assured that what the workers and customers of the establishment experienced “It was kind of surreal.” He has specified that the first waiter who served the now arrested informed him that the bar did not have a kitchen “so that the montaditos are already made”. Italy arrests Ukrainian suspected of involvement in Nord Stream pipeline blasts:
– Italian police said Thursday they had arrested a Ukrainian man suspected of being one of the coordinators of the 2022 attacks on the Nord Stream gas pipelines, which were built to carry gas from Russia to Germany. Prosecutors believe the suspect was one of a group of people who placed undersea explosives on the pipelines.
– The suspect, identified only as Serhii K. in line with German privacy rules, was arrested overnight by officers from a police station in Misano Adriatrico, near the Italian city of Rimini, federal prosecutors said.
– In a statement Thursday, prosecutors said Serhii K. was one of a group of people who placed explosives on the pipelines and is believed to have been one of the coordinators. They said he is suspected of causing explosions, anti-constitutional sabotage and the destruction of structures. He was arrested on a European arrest warrant that was issued on Monday.
– The suspect and others used a yacht that set off from the German port of Rostock, which had been hired from a German company using forged IDs and with the help of intermediaries, prosecutors said. They didn’t give any information on the other people aboard the yacht or say anything about who else might have been involved in coordinating the suspected sabotage, or about a possible motive.
