Insane Rents, Abusive Deposits & Law Breaking Landlords Contribute Significantly To Spain’s Economic Woes- Almost half of self-employed had trouble renting for not having a fixed income: {Translation, summary}
– A study by Uatae (Union of Autonomous Workers Associations) reveals that 49% of self-employed workers have faced challenges in renting homes due to their employment status. Landlords often impose stricter, often illegal, conditions, such as requiring additional deposits or rejecting applications without a fixed salary. These difficulties arise from landlords’ perceptions of the instability of fluctuating incomes.
– Uatae argues that this creates a form of silent illegal discrimination, particularly affecting new self-employed individuals or those with stable, though variable, incomes. Victims of these abuses are strongly encouraged to report such violations of their rights. The association calls for urgent action, including stronger social protection to build confidence in self-employed workers and public housing programmes that eliminate discrimination based on employment status. María José Landaburu, Uatae’s General Secretary, stresses that self-employment should not be a barrier to renting, as self-employed individuals contribute to the economy. The Great 2% Defence Scam of Sanchez- NATO certifies that Spain has already reached a level of defence spending that amounts to 2% of GDP (by misappropriating EU Covid Recovery Funds): {Translation, summary}
– NATO has certified that Spain meets the alliance’s 2 percent of GDP defence target, a milestone sought since 2006. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has declared the level sufficient, even as all NATO members have signed a pact to raise spending further to 5 percent by 2035 under US pressure. Defence Minister Margarita Robles defended the increase as proof of Spain’s seriousness and commitment to allies, insisting support for Ukraine will continue.
– The figures show Spain now spends 33.1 billion euros, ranking seventh in NATO, though at 676 dollars per inhabitant the country remains below the alliance average. Spending has risen by 43 percent between 2024 and 2025, doubling since 2021.
– Yet the manner of reaching this target is controversial. Instead of a new budget, the Government has reshuffled unspent EU funds, reassigned old budget lines, and relied on temporary deficit improvements. This accounting manoeuvre allows NATO to record Spain at 2 percent, but it masks the true economic impact. AIReF, the independent fiscal watchdog, has warned that these methods will increase deficit and debt once fully reflected in the accounts. Editor’s Analysis:
Hey Pedro, how many times can you spend the same peso? {DigameXtra}
– Where does the money come from without an approved state budget in over two years?
Spain has been operating under extended budgets (mainly 2022’s), but governments can still reallocate funds through royal decrees, credit modifications, and extraordinary authorisations. This is what Sánchez’s cabinet has been doing: moving money around rather than approving a new full budget. It is legal, but controversial because it avoids normal parliamentary debate, while violating public trust.
– How can they reach 2% of GDP without a new budget?
The government redirected unused EU recovery funds. These are funds that were supposed to be used to help the public recover from the economic damages of the Covid response fiasco (remember all those small businesses that never reopened, well this is the money that was never disbursed to them.); the same funds that it has, on several occasions, pledged to other projects such as health care and DANA relief. In practice, this means the “increase” isn’t fresh money, but rather accounting manoeuvres that in effect defraud the public. How many times can you spend the same peso Pedro? The AIReF (independent fiscal watchdog) has warned that this spending will add to deficit and debt once the funding shifts hit the books.
– NATO certification is unreliable.
NATO accepts governments’ declared commitments if the funds are allocated or legally committed, even if not fully spent yet. That’s why they “certify” Spain at 2%. It’s more about pledged resources than actual paid invoices.
– Bottom line:
Spain can claim 2% of GDP on defence because NATO counts budgeted allocations and credit modifications, not just executed spending. But since there hasn’t been a fresh approved budget in over two years, it’s being done by cooking the books and dubious decrees, not through a standard annual budget law. Spain hasn’t magically conjured a defence budget — it has reshuffled old accounts, and re-used previously pledged EU funds and savings, which NATO counts as valid “commitments.” It may satisfy NATO for now, but it’s all smoke and mirrors.

ANDALUCÍA

The sale of a tourist house in Andalusia also includes its permission for holiday rental: {Translation, summary}
– A resolution of the General Directorate of Legal Security and Public FE, resolves a key criterion for the sector of the vacation rental in Andalusia by establishing that tourist registration is linked to the property not to the person. That is, the sale of a tourist house in Andalusia entails permission to maintain the holiday rental activity while the property continues to meet the requirements established by the regulations of the Junta de Andalucía. Experts in the field value that it is recognized that when a tourist license house changes owner, the license is still alive and fully in force, provided that the property maintains the objective conditions required by the regulations. MALAGA PROVINCE

Alleged arsonist arrested for causing six forest fires since July in Málaga: {Translation}
– The Civil Guard has arrested an alleged arsonist for allegedly causing six forest fires in different municipalities in the province of Malaga since last July. The latest fire attributed to him occurred this Sunday in Mijas, which once again forced the mobilization of Infoca troops to extinguish the flames.
– The troops had practically identified him and, after the latest incident, they went to the motorhome where he was living, located in an area of Malaga city, to arrest him. Apparently, the suspect admitted to the officers that he had started the fires. After being brought before the court, he was remanded in custody.
– According to the Armed Forces, the alleged arsonist set fires in areas of high ecological value in the municipalities of Mijas, Ojén, Alhaurín de la Torre, and on three occasions in Alhaurín el Grande. These fires were classified as attempted fires thanks to rapid alerts from the public and sightings by environmental agents from the Andalusian Regional Government. All of them required the intervention of Infoca to prevent the flames from spreading, as the fire was close to urban centers and large areas of trees.
– As part of Operation Moonwalker, the Civil Guard began investigations to find the perpetrator. They observed that the person responsible followed the same pattern, causing these incidents during daylight hours and in places that were difficult to access. Continuing with their investigations, they verified that the suspect had been in the area where all these fires had taken place. MALAGA CITY

An 81-year-old woman took advantage of her “fragile” appearance to steal from tourist apartments in Malaga:
{Translation, summary}
– An 81-year-old woman used her “fragile” appearance to steal from holiday flats in Málaga. She was arrested after being caught in the act by a resident in one of the properties. The National Police believe she was responsible for five burglaries using a technique known as “slipping,” where a thin plastic object is used to manipulate a lock and gain entry.
– The suspect, who has a long history of property crimes, took advantage of her appearance to avoid suspicion. She would claim to have mistaken the door or pretend to be a cleaner if confronted. Victims, mainly tourists, noticed partial thefts, leaving them unsure of how the crime occurred. During her arrest, plastic cuttings used to force locks were found in her possession. She preferred cash and jewellery. After her arrest, she was remanded in provisional custody.

TORROX

Commotion in Torrox-Costa after half a dozen shots were fired into the air by the local police to stop two young men fleeing on a motorcycle: {Translation}
– The police officer fired nearly half a dozen shots. In the end, he managed to catch up with him near the La Buena Vida beach bar, as confirmed by SUR. One of the workers at this establishment, the skewer cook, assisted in the arrest, chasing him when the young man ran past at full speed. A few hundred metres away, another police patrol caught up with another young man, his companion on a motorcycle.
– The sequence of this ‘film-like’ scene begins when a patrol observes the two young men, aged 20 and 30, one Spanish and the other of foreign origin, performing an illegal manoeuvre on the motorcycle near the taxi rank by the Faro Avenue. They are signalled to stop, but the two young men ignore the order and begin their reckless escape, first on the vehicle and then on foot.
– On the motorcycle, they invade the gardened area of the Ferrara promenade, attempting to run over one of the officers giving chase, until they crash and then flee on foot. After running together for a few hundred metres, they split up near the Safari Bar de Copas beach bar. One heads east, and the other retraces his steps. However, neither of them ultimately manages to escape.
– Within minutes, the area around the promenade and the old N-340 road is filled with vehicles from the Local Police and the Civil Guard. The incident has caused quite a stir in Torrox-Costa, which was bustling with tourists at that time. The police are now carrying out the necessary procedures to place the two young men at the disposal of the judiciary. The motorcyclist has a criminal record. VIÑUELA

Periana declares official mourning for the death of a resident in a collision between two cars in La Viñuela: {Translation}
– Alerts were raised in the AxarquiaPlus newsroom on Wednesday night. Several followers began notifying us of an accident on the La Viñuela road, just before the radar location, according to their reports. Upon checking official information, we confirmed that the Provincial Fire Consortium had dispatched crews to intervene in the traffic accident, while the Directorate General of Traffic website indicated a “fixed obstacle” with an image of a car, which is how they often report traffic accidents.
– The 1-1-2 emergency service, part of the Andalusian Emergency Agency, reported that a man had died, and four women were injured, three of whom were minors, in the crash. Several witnesses had called 1-1-2 to report a head-on collision between two cars at kilometre 36 of the A-356. They mentioned that there were people trapped in the cars and injured, prompting the emergency services to deploy fire brigades, the Emergency Medical Services (CES) 061, the Civil Guard, and Road Maintenance teams. The medical teams at the accident site confirmed that a 38-year-old man had died, and four women had been injured: two 16-year-olds who were evacuated to the Hospital of the Axarquía, a 14-year-old taken to Carlos Haya Hospital, and a 49-year-old woman also transferred to Carlos Haya in the capital.
– The Periana Town Hall, via social media, issued an official statement declaring a period of mourning on the 28th and 29th of August “as a sign of sorrow and respect for the death of Mr. Óscar Gallego García… We extend our sincerest condolences and solidarity to his family, loved ones, and the entire community who share in this loss.” Source, Spanish: https://www.axarquiaplus.es/un-fallecido-y-cuatro-mujeres-heridas-al-colisionar-dos-turismos-en-vinuela/

NATURE

They intensify the reintroduction of an endangered fish at the mouth of the Guadalhorce River of Malaga: {Translation, summary}
– The Andalusian Regional Government has carried out a new release of specimens of the fartet fish (Aphanius iberus, a toothcarp) at the mouth of the Guadalhorce River in Malaga, as part of a program to preserve the genetic diversity of this endangered species. A total of 350 specimens born at the breeding and conservation centre for endangered fish in Los Villares (Córdoba) were released, from parents from the only natural Andalusian population, which is in the Adra river basin (Almería), the Regional Ministry of Sustainability reported in a statement on Thursday. This reintroduction is part of the actions to consolidate the population in this estuary, which is the most important for the species in Andalusia along with the Albufera de Adra, according to the head of the Geodiversity and Biodiversity Service, Juan Antonio Martín.
– The fartet is a fish endemic to southeastern Iberia, characterized by its extraordinary tolerance to hypersaline environments and high temperatures, which has been key to its survival in the face of habitat alteration and invasive alien species. However, the presence of the Eastern Gambusia or mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki), a voracious exotic fish from the United States introduced into Spain in the 1920s to fight against mosquitos, has relegated the fartet to marginal areas, where it can only compete effectively in conditions of high salinity. The hypersaline habitats of the Guadalhorce area allow the fartet to thrive in comparison to the gambusia, which cannot tolerate such high salt concentrations. Since 2017, more than 5,200 specimens have been reintroduced into this area, forming a large population centre in the large lagoon and, to a lesser extent, in the old river.
– In addition to its value as a threatened species, the fartet plays an important ecological role in the Guadalhorce ecosystem, as its presence has been shown to contribute to the natural control of insect larvae, such as mosquitoes, which has had a beneficial effect on nearby urban areas during the summer months. (Note that the gambusia is just as effective, or even more so, in devouring mosquito larve, thus its alternative name, the mosquitofish.) However, the fartet fish species continues to face major challenges, such as the need to control the spread of gambusia, which in some lagoons are already showing signs of genetic adaptation to higher salinity conditions than previously documented, the Regional Government noted in the statement. – Sunday Service:
Whether you live in Nerja or are visiting our area, you are very welcome to come and join us on Sundays at 11.00am. Join us for a time of Holy Spirit led worship and experience the presence of our God. Our teaching is Bible based as we honour God and obey His Word. During this time of uncertainty, God’s Word reminds us that the Gospel shines brightest in times of darkness. Our service lasts for about 1 hour and 30 mins. With Tea and Coffee afterwards.
– Prayer Meeting:
You are also welcome to join our prayer meetings on Wednesday mornings at 11.00am for 1 hour, where we meet for prayer and worship.
– Jesus said: “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me”. (John 14:6)

El Puente Christian Fellowship (Vélez-Málaga): We are a friendly, multi-national, Bible believing community of Christ. We meet each Sunday at 11am to worship the Lord. We enjoy a time of worship with contemporary songs and traditional hymns, and a message brought to us by our Pastor, one of our members or a visiting speaker.
The church meeting hall is situated at: Res: El Olivar 5, 8 Bajo 1, Calle Arbequin, Velez Malaga 29700.
Full directions and further information can be found on our Facebook page, or you can contact us by email on elpuentechristianfellowship@gmail.com or by phone on 665626342.
For those who cannot join us in person, we aim to stream Sunday services via the Facebook page (subject to a good internet connection).
