SPAIN
The Conflicting Polls- New polls at the start of the political term show predictable trends following August events: {Translation, summary}
– According to Sigma Dos, the PP would lead elections with 34.4% and 149 seats, losing slightly since July, while the PSOE recovers moderately to 27% and 109 seats, still below pre-Cerdán scandal levels. Vox continues its ascent, reaching 15.1% and potentially 49 seats, reflecting six months of growth, aided by heightened focus on immigration and wildfires. Far-left parties struggle: Sumar falls to 7.8% with 13 seats, and Podemos remains at 4.2%, securing only a couple of deputies.
– SocioMétrica shows slightly stronger shifts: PP at 34.5% with 150 deputies, PSOE rising to 26.2% with over 100 seats, and Vox at 16.1% with 51 deputies. Together, PP and Vox would still hold a significant majority coalition, maintaining control if they govern jointly. Sumar and Podemos also gain minor increases.
– Both Sigma Dos and SocioMétrica are established Spanish polling firms with a track record in political opinion research. Differences in results come from variable sample size, methodology, timing, weighting, and seat projection models, rather than outright errors or bias, although political leanings can influence results.

High temperatures leave 169 deaths in Andalucia in August, 90 more than last year: {Translation, summary}
– The high temperatures in August have left 169 people dead in Andalucia this past month, 46.7% more than the figure recorded in the same period last year—which reached 79 deaths—according to estimates by the Daily Mortality Monitoring System (MoMo) of the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII).
– Data from this platform also reveals that deaths in August attributable to this cause exceeded those in July by 86, when 83 deaths were recorded. In total, since the beginning of June 2025, Andalusia has reported 302 heat-related deaths, 17.3 percent more than in the three summer months of 2024, when 146 deaths were reported.
– By gender, in August there were 105 deaths from excessive heat in women and 64 in men. In terms of the age of the deceased, the majority were over 65 (62 deaths) and, of these, 24 were over 85. Andalusian Gov’t & Minister of Economy, Finance, and European Funds, Carolina España, reject a regional debt write-off as a “trap” and “accounting window dressing” due to the “demands” of the Catalan independence movement: {Translation, summary}
– Carolina España {pic}, spokesperson for the Andalusian Government and Minister of Economy, Finance and European Funds, rejected the central government’s proposed debt forgiveness of up to €83,252 million, of which €18,791 million would concern Andalusia.
– She described it as a “trap” and “accounting make-up” demanded by Catalan separatism, specifically ERC, in exchange for supporting Salvador Illa as Catalan president. España explained that the funds do not represent new money for Andalusia: the debt is merely transferred from the regional balance sheet to the state’s balance sheet, meaning the total obligation remains, now mutualised among all Spaniards.
– Consequently, there is no additional resource for healthcare, education, infrastructure, or social services, and Andalusia cannot spend the forgiven debt on new projects. Catalonia, she argued, benefits because it already has privileged financing, receiving 100 per cent of its tax revenues, whereas other communities, including Andalusia, only receive 50 per cent. España stressed that Andalusia “deserves to know the truth” and that Spaniards will ultimately pay the debt. {They are taking a harsher tone today, wonder if they read my analysis yesterday? -Ed} Source, Spanish: https://www.teleprensa.com/articulo/sevilla/junta-rechaza-condonacion-deuda-que-es-trampa-maquillaje-contable-exigencia-independentismo/202509010807322205329.html

The La Viñuela reservoir begins the meteorological autumn on pre-alert status due to drought: {Translation, summary}
– The La Viñuela reservoir begins September in “drought pre-alert”, holding 74 cubic hectometres, or 45 per cent of capacity, which is an improvement over last year’s 25.11 hectometres but still vulnerable. During the summer, 8.68 hectometres were consumed, nearly one hectometre in the last week of August alone. Across Málaga’s seven reservoirs, levels stand at 51 per cent capacity.
– Despite heavy rainfall last winter, La Viñuela remains in alert for severe scarcity and could revert to stricter restrictions if autumn fails to bring rain. Earlier this year, the Junta de Andalucía slightly eased measures: urban water allocation rose to 225 litres per person per day, and irrigation allowances expanded to 12.8 hectometres, supported by regenerated water. Additional reliance is being placed on the Chíllar wells, providing at least 60 litres per second. Projections suggest that by October, reserves may drop to around 62 hectometres, keeping the Axarquía region under pressure. MALAGA PROVINCE
The audacity of smugglers! They unload a shipment in broad daylight on a beach in Casares (Malaga): {Translation, summary}
– The Costa del Sol is one of Europe’s main entry points for drugs, and this past Saturday this reality became clear with an episode that also highlighted the brazenness of the traffickers. Six individuals disembarked from a narco-speedboat in broad daylight on a beach in Casares and unloaded several bales in front of dozens of astonished sunbathers.
– Video footage, circulated on social media, shows the men acting completely normally: they unload the bales from the boat, which was right at the water’s edge; place them in a vehicle parked on the beach front; and leave as if no one was watching, despite the beach being crowded.
– The contents of the bales are still unknown, but they are presumed to have contained drugs, likely cocaine or hashish {or guns? -Ed.}, historically the main products trafficked across the Strait, in an operation that has provoked deep indignation among locals and beachgoers, mainly due to the traffickers’ audacity and sense of impunity.
– The Mayor of Casares, Juan Luis Villalón (IU), has requested an increase in Guardia Civil personnel and enhanced surveillance, both along the Casares coastline and across the Costa del Sol, following the weekend incident.
– In a statement, the Town Hall explained that “this request is not new, but has been submitted for years to the Local Security Board and to the Government Subdelegation and the Guardia Civil Command.” It also “condemns the unloading of shipments which, they say, have been occurring with total impunity on the Costa del Sol for years.”
– The mayor also acknowledged and praised the work of the security forces, who are said to have already arrested those responsible. However, he stressed the need to reinforce preventive investigations to prevent such incidents from recurring and to guarantee the safety of citizens and visitors on the beaches of Casares. Cybercriminals are having a field day on the internet with refrigerator and air conditioner scams in Malaga: {Translation}
– The National Police have issued an alert in Málaga after detecting a significant increase in reports of online scams in recent weeks. The frauds are linked to fraudulent websites that exploit the popularity of seasonal products, such as refrigerators, air conditioning units, or barbecues, to attract buyers.
– The modus operandi, as detailed by the Cybercrime Section of the Provincial Police Station, begins when a consumer encounters an appealing advertisement on social media or via a link received through instant messaging.
Clicking the link leads to a website that very convincingly imitates the design of reputable stores. Once on the site, the victim enters their personal and banking details, believing they are completing a legitimate purchase.
– The fraud is consummated at the point of payment. The customer never receives the promised product, or sometimes receives an entirely different item of poor quality. The greatest risk, however, lies in the surrender of banking information, as scammers can use the card details and credentials to make further purchases in the victim’s name or sell the information on clandestine internet forums.
– To combat this trend, the Police emphasise the value of common sense. “If an offer is very attractive or disproportionate, it is probably a scam,” the officers warn.
They also recommend carefully checking the web address before entering confidential information, as many of these portals display slight domain variations or typographical errors that reveal their fraudulent origin.
– Furthermore, they advise keeping devices updated and using verification tools. You can use free artificial intelligence applications like ChatGPT, OpenAI, Perplexity, or GROK to check whether a specific website may be fraudulent. These systems cross-reference security data, behavioural patterns, and user reviews to provide a score indicating the site’s reliability. Extinguished forest fire in Benalmádena: {Translation, summary}
– The fire that affected the Santángelo Oeste area in the Malaga town of Benalmádena on Monday has now been completely extinguished, according to the Forest Fire Extinguishing Service. In a post on its social media accounts, Plan Infoca stated that the fire was extinguished at 6 p.m., at which point technicians confirmed that there was no possibility of it reigniting. MALAGA CITY
Stabilized the forest fire that affects Monte Coronado, in Malaga capital: {Translation, summary}
– The Andalusian Forest Fire Extinction Service, Plan Infoca, has reported Monday that the forest fire affecting the Monte Coronado area in the Palma-Palmilla district of Málaga city is now stabilised. It was Infoca itself that reported the fire on its social media at 1.40 p.m., noting that it had broken out in the same area where a fire had already occurred on 18 August.
– From that moment, two Brica units, a Brica operations technician, a group of forest firefighters, an environmental agent, a fire engine, and a Super Puma helicopter began operations to try to contain the fire. Minutes later, two airtankers joined the extinction efforts.
– By 3.00 p.m., Plan Infoca reported favourable progress in controlling the fire, and an hour later the aerial units withdrew, leaving three groups of forest firefighters, two fire engines, and one environmental agent continuing to combat the blaze. At 5.35 p.m., the forest fire at Monte Coronado was declared stabilised, with personnel from the Extinction Service continuing to work on its control and final extinction. NERJA
Questionable management at the Nerja Caves- paying for basketball sponsorships but failing to insure a 64 year old concert series: {DigameXtra Editorial}
– The Cueva de Nerja Foundation, custodian of one of Spain’s most visited heritage sites, faces mounting criticism for questionable management practices. In 2025 it cancelled its summer Festival de Música y Danza, the entire concert series, after a procurement dispute froze the tender process, later ruling there was no time to organise the 64th edition. The blow was compounded by the fact that no performance insurance had been arranged. For an institution of this size, and for a festival with six decades of history, failing to secure cancellation insurance is a serious oversight; all major promoters and events have such insurance these days. No one has been held accountable for this huge error that damaged Nerja’s cultural reputation and cost the local economy many millions of euros.
– Yet at the same time, the foundation has now allocated funds to sponsor the Unicaja Baloncesto, Malaga’s professional basketball team. Marketed as “promotion,” the deal places the cave’s logo on kit and arenas, but contributes nothing to conservation, research, or internal programming. The contrast is stark: there was no budgetary foresight to safeguard a flagship cultural event, but resources were found for external sports branding.
– The Unicaja Baloncesto basketball team is owned by Fundación Bancaria Unicaja, the private banking foundation that also owns Unicaja Banco, one of Spain’s largest financial institutions. Do they really need money from a local, public foundation like Nerja Caves? And do the caves need to be spending on extravagant sponsorships when they cannot afford to insure one of the most important annual cultural events in Malaga?
– This points to deeper governance failings. Public foundations exist to protect heritage and support culture, not to bankroll professional sport. Until priorities are realigned — with proper planning, insurance, and transparency — the sponsorship looks less like strategy and more like a distraction that erodes trust in the cave’s stewardship.

– The artists Melody, Mago de Oz and Joana Jiménez will be the main attractions at the fair in the Andalusian municipality of Mijas, which will begin this Saturday with a dinner in honour of the elderly. This was announced by the mayor, Ana Mata, in a statement, who will switch on the artistic lighting at around 10.30 p.m. She also explained that at 11.00 p.m. the duo ‘Pareja de Ases’, consisting of Justo Gómez and Rocío Cortés, will take to the stage.
– Sunday, 7 Sept, will mark the first day of the daytime fair. The traditional contest to choose the Queen and King will take place, alongside a concert by the artist Joana Jiménez starting at 12.30 a.m.
– Monday, 8 Sept, will be the “grand day” of the fair, beginning with a mass at 11.30 a.m. in honour of the Patroness, the Virgin of La Peña, who will proceed in a procession from the Church of the Immaculate at 9.30 p.m. That night, at 1.00 a.m., ‘Los barrieros del sur’, a tribute band to El Barrio, will perform.
– Tuesday, 9 Sept, will be dedicated to younger visitors, featuring the show ‘Gods of Egypt’ with Rufino García, Inma and MXN CH1, starting at 10.00 p.m.
– Wednesday, 10 Sept, the singer Melody will be the star with her ‘Esa Diva Tour ’25’. The Councillor for Festivals, Silvia Marín, stated that “without doubt, it will be one of the most eagerly awaited concerts,” beginning at 11.00 p.m.
– Thursday, 11 Sept, to conclude the concert programme, there will be “a great night of rock with the band ‘Hechizo’, paying tribute to ‘Héroes del Silencio’, and Mago de Oz with their ‘Feliz no cumpleaños’ tour,” with performances starting at 10.00 p.m.
– Furthermore, to facilitate the arrival of visitors to the Mijas fair, a bus service will run from La Cala and Las Lagunas. Services will begin at 7.00 p.m. from the fairgrounds in La Cala and Las Lagunas respectively, running approximately every half hour. The last bus from Fuente de la Seda will depart at 5.00 a.m. Additionally, at La Cantera, where a parking area has been provided, a shuttle bus will operate until 4.30 a.m. Source, Spanish: https://www.teleprensa.com/articulo/malaga/melody-mago-oz-joana-jimenez-protagonizaran-feria-mijas/202509011637282205947.html

Yoigo, going, going, gone- the mobile network disappears after two decades and this is what will happen now: {Translation, summary}
– The Yoigo mobile network in Spain, operational for almost 20 years, has been permanently shut down following the merger of MásMóvil and Orange into MásOrange. Once the smallest of Spain’s four mobile networks, Yoigo had nearly 12,000 active nodes in mid-2022, declining to around 6,300 by April 2025. The network closure forms part of the companies’ cost-saving and efficiency strategy, aimed at exceeding annual savings of 500 million euros by mid-2027.
– Customers of Yoigo and MásMóvil face no disruption, as the transition to Orange’s 4G and 5G infrastructure has been automatic. Service quality remains consistent, with access to current technologies and network expansion, while the company can concentrate on enhancing next-generation services. Yoigo’s infrastructure is now nearly entirely decommissioned, with fewer than 300 nodes still active, yet the brand will continue commercially. All MásMóvil customers will soon fully rely on Orange’s network for mobile Internet access. Total lunar eclipse in Malaga- date and time of the next astronomical event: {Translation, summary}
– A total lunar eclipse will be visible from Málaga on the night of Sunday, 7 September 2025, and can be observed across most of Spain, except in western Galicia and the Canary Islands. The eclipse will begin partially in Málaga at 18:27, with totality from 19:31 to 20:53 and the maximum phase at 20:11. After totality, the eclipse will continue partially until around 22:00. During totality, the Moon will appear reddish due to sunlight refracted by the Earth’s atmosphere. Unlike solar eclipses, this event is visible to the naked eye, though observers should seek an unobstructed, dark location to avoid light pollution.
