SPAIN

Ten members of the CGPJ ‘rise up’ against Attorney General García Ortiz, and also renounce President Sánchez’s “unjustified” attacks on judges: {Translation, summary}
– The ten conservative members of Spain’s General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) have formally objected to the indicted Attorney General, Álvaro García Ortiz {pic}, attending the solemn opening of the judicial year, presided over by the King. They argue his presence is inappropriate as he is facing trial for revealing secrets, which would compromise the event’s dignity and set a poor example, noting any subordinate in his position would be automatically suspended.
– The members also vehemently condemn recent “unjustified attacks” on judges by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and his government, stating such rhetoric damages trust in a fundamental pillar of the Rule of Law. They have requested the head of the judiciary to ask the Attorney General to withdraw, to deny the Minister of Justice a seat on the dais as a symbol of institutional separation, and to inform the King of the situation, all to uphold the prestige and independence of the judiciary. The Supreme Court plans to bring García Ortiz to trial after the start of the judicial year, although he may remain in office: {Translation, summary}
– The Spanish Supreme Court is poised to make history by sending the sitting Attorney General, Álvaro García Ortiz {pic w/ King}, to trial for revealing secrets, related to a leak targeting the partner of Madrid’s regional leader. A legal loophole means he can remain in his powerful post until conviction or resignation.
– The unprecedented situation has caused significant institutional upheaval. Conservative members of the judiciary’s governing council have requested he boycott the upcoming judicial year opening ceremony, presided over by the King, and condemned the Prime Minister’s attacks on judges. In a rare show of unity, the main professional associations for judges and prosecutors have jointly called for García Ortiz’s voluntary absence from the event. Reports suggest some Supreme Court magistrates are even considering a rebellion by snubbing the ceremony or booing him when he speaks, with attendance being maintained only out of respect for the monarch. A National Police officer debunks Marlaska’s big hoax about crime: {Translation, summary}
– Laura García {pic}, spokesperson for the police trade union JUPOL, debunked the major falsehood put forward by Minister of the Interior Fernando Grande-Marlaska regarding the decrease in crime in Spain. She did so on the programme ‘Más Vale Tarde’.
– This officer did not deny the fact that crime has decreased, but she stressed that there was a trick to the figures:
“The official data is within anyone’s reach because it is public. The official data actually says that crime has fallen in total by approximately a little over 2%. What is true is that what have decreased are thefts, which is precisely the crime most committed in this country. What is very serious is that the crimes which cause the most social alarm and the most serious ones are rising: intentional homicides, murders, kidnappings, sexual assaults, drug trafficking, serious injuries, and public affrays. All of these have risen exponentially.” “And last night we gained access to some reports from the Ministry of the Interior, also created by the State Secretariat for Security, where we found, because normally the Ministry of the Interior in fact hides them for the current year, were the nationalities. And what has risen the most, precisely, since 2017 until now, since Mr Marlaska has been at the head of the Ministry of the Interior, is a 276% increase in crimes committed by foreign nationals.” Crucially, García unveiled data showing foreign nationals accounted for 33.6% of solved sexual crimes in 2022 despite comprising just 11.4% of the population. ANDALUCÍA

The new aid from the Junta of up to 5,500 euros for the self-employed: {Translation, summary}
– The Regional Government of Andalusia has introduced new grants for self employed workers starting their activity, with aid between 3,800 and 5,500 euros. Backed by 104 million euros for 2025 to 2026, the scheme focuses on young people, women, and projects in towns with fewer than 10,000 inhabitants. Applicants must be registered in RETA or the Seafarers’ Scheme, pay reduced state Social Security contributions, work in Andalusia, and submit a viability plan. They must also keep their activity active for twelve months. Applications and all documentation must be submitted exclusively online through the General Electronic Office of the Andalusian Government.
– Grant levels depend on age, gender, and municipality size, with the largest sums reserved for younger applicants in small towns. The measure follows the successful “Line 2” programme, an earlier funding call for start up aid, which distributed 132 million euros to 29,600 self employed workers, almost half of them women. The EU finances a port outside the EU, without environmental restrictions, in northern Morocco, that directly competes with the Andalucian ports: {Translation, summary}
– Morocco is constructing its second mega-port, Nador West Med, in the Strait of Gibraltar, 50km from Melilla, with an investment of €730 million. Over €300 million of this funding comes from EU bodies, primarily the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), which has provided three loans totalling approximately €310 million plus additional grants for climate-related infrastructure.
– The port, scheduled for operation by 2030, will handle 3.5 to 5.5 million containers and 25 million tonnes of hydrocarbons annually, directly competing with Andalusian ports like Algeciras, Málaga, Motril, and Almería.
– A significant competitive imbalance exists because EU ports face far stricter environmental regulations, including the Emissions Trading System (ETS) carbon tax on shipping, which Moroccan facilities avoid. This has led shipping lines to use Tangier for transhipment to evade EU fees, raising questions about EU funding for third-country projects without environmental conditions. Gerardo Landaluce, president of the Algeciras Port Authority, emphasises the need for a level playing field and improved land connectivity investments, which have stalled under Spain’s current government.

MALAGA CITY

Previous dates for execution & completion of 3rd Malaga hospital construction rescinded: {Translation, summary}
– The planned third hospital for Málaga has stalled without a confirmed start date for construction, casting doubt on the Junta de Andalucía’s previously announced ambition to inaugurate it by 2032. Government spokesperson and Minister for the economy, Carolina España {pic}, now publicly refuses to commit to a timetable, merely stating she “hopes it is as soon as possible” while admitting the project has had a “rather complicated” administrative process.
– This hesitation highlights significant underlying challenges. The public tender, valued at €607 million and currently under review with three bidding consortia, has been mired in controversy. The construction companies themselves have heavily criticised the proposed schedule, warning the government that the 75-month timeline outlined in the contract is “unrealistic” and of “difficult fulfilment.” They cite the extreme complexity of the build and its problematic overlap with concurrent works to extend the city’s metro line 2. While the government defends the plan by citing the project’s Regional Interest status, which expedites bureaucratic licences, this has not alleviated concerns over the aggressive and potentially unachievable deadlines. With a 75-month build time required, ground needed to be broken by early 2025 to meet the 2032 target, beginning with a 15-month phase to construct a multi-storey car park. ALHAURÍN DE LA TORRE

Local police officers in Alhaurín de la Torre denounce the “chaotic” situation: a private security guard is guarding the police headquarters due to a lack of officers: {Translation, summary}
– The Professional Union of Municipal Police of Spain (SPPME) in Alhaurín de la Torre has raised serious concerns over a shortage of officers, highlighting that a private security guard is now used to watch the Police Headquarters. The union calls the situation “chaotic,” noting that summer workload increases strain on the force, with only one two-officer patrol often covering the entire municipality and the headquarters frequently closed at night. – Officers are reportedly frustrated at being unable to address robberies, vandalism, youth disorder, drug trafficking, or issues linked to tourist rentals. Internal operational problems, including the inability to use essential police software and verify administrative data, further hinder the service. The SPPME stresses that its complaint is intended to correct inaccurate reporting and reiterates its willingness to collaborate on solutions, including expanding the municipal police force, as seen in other cities such as Seville. IRELAND

Conor McGregor announces he will run for office in Ireland to tackle the problem of illegal immigration: {Translation}
– The Irish mixed martial artist Connor McGregor has announced on his social media that he will stand in the next presidential elections in Ireland. The former UFC champion, known for both his sporting achievements and his media personality, has stated that his goal is to return decision-making power to the citizens and halt what he considers a crisis derived from illegal immigration.
– In a combative-toned message, McGregor declared that, if elected, he would not sign any law without first consulting the people. Furthermore, he urged local councillors, whom he defined as “the true backbone of communities”, to support him with their nomination so that his name can appear on the ballot paper.
– The fighter accused the current Executive of having failed in the protection of social welfare, alluding to an increase in child poverty, street-level insecurity, and a deterioration of the national system. “This government has cost us our mental peace, our security, and our hope for the future,” he expressed in a video in front of the government headquarters in Dublin.
– McGregor has also linked social discontent with the mass arrival of immigrants, whom he has held responsible for placing pressure on public services and contributing to a climate of insecurity. In this regard, he has promised to place the “will of the people” as the central axis of his mandate and to recover articles of the Irish Constitution that, according to him, have been ignored.
– The announcement marks a surprising turn in the career of the mixed martial arts star, who in recent years had focused his activity on business ventures parallel to sport, such as his whisky brand and various investments. Now, McGregor seeks to transfer his popularity and direct style to the political arena, appealing to a discourse of radical change and national sovereignty. FASHION

Italian designer Giorgio Armani dies at 91:
– The Italian fashion designer and billionaire brand owner Giorgio Armani has died at the age of 91. He was the archetype of Italian style and elegance, reimagining men’s and women’s suits for a modern audience.
– In a profile in The Financial Times, in one of the designer’s last interviews, Alexander Fury wrote: “He put women into a uniform of suits just as radical as Chanel’s, creating forceful, confident clothing that helped to power the working woman’s social revolution of the 1980s. “By contrast, he relaxed menswear, deconstructing traditional tailoring in a manner that has affected how just about every suit in the world is made.” Full article: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/ceq25w34lv4o

UPDATE- Streameast pirate sports streaming service takedown details- looks like I nailed it in my comments yesterday:
– “ACE Shuts Down Giant ‘Streameast’ Piracy Ring, But the Original Survives”: In a major anti-piracy action against a Streameast-branded operation, ACE has shut down what it calls the world’s largest illegal sports streaming ring. Conducted alongside Egyptian authorities, the operation dismantled a network of more than 80 domain names responsible for 1.6 billion visits in the past year. Interestingly, the original Streameast operation, previously targeted by U.S. authorities, remains online and claims it has no connection to the dismantled ‘copycat’. “Cybercriminals Exploit X’s Grok AI to Bypass Ad Protections and Spread Malware to Millions”:
– Cybersecurity experts have uncovered a new malvertising tactic on social media platform X that exploits its AI assistant Grok. The method, dubbed “Grokking,” bypasses restrictions on Promoted Ads, which normally permit only text, images, or videos. Malicious actors run promoted video posts with adult content as bait, concealing harmful links in the “From:” metadata field below the video player, an area not scanned by X. They then tag Grok in replies, prompting it to reveal the link, which appears trustworthy as it comes from X’s official AI. This manipulation allows the malicious URL to gain mass exposure, search engine visibility, and a reputation boost. Users who click are redirected through shady ad networks to fake CAPTCHA pages, data-stealing malware, or other harmful content. Guardio Labs reports hundreds of accounts involved, each posting thousands of times until suspended, suggesting a large, organised operation exploiting Grok’s amplification.

TRAVEL

Delays in all trains between Malaga and Madrid due to the fall of the ADIF computer system: {Translation, summary}
– Train services between Málaga and Madrid suffered further disruption after a failure of Adif’s computer systems shut down the Madrid traffic control centre, affecting trains across Spain. Though back up systems worked and circulation was gradually restored, several services experienced delays. Renfe, the main operator, reported no cancellations, with only a few trains stopped on the tracks. Average delays were around 40 minutes on affected Andalusian routes, while Ouigo confirmed two delayed trains at María Zambrano and Iryo one in Málaga. Full normal service resumed by 12:20.
– The incident coincided with the Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, addressing Congress to clarify the condition of the rail network. He warned that problems on the high speed line could persist for at least two more years, citing the ageing fleet, with no new commuter trains since 2008 or long distance units since 2010. Plans include 475 new trains worth 5.2 billion euros. Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/malaga/retrasos-trenes-malaga-madrid-caida-adif_0_2004695854.html

Editor’s note on the state of Spain’s infrastructure:
– ADIF is the state owned train company. The article above is just another example of the decaying Spanish infrastructure.
– It also displays the lack of development of modern computer technology in Spain, the same systems they want to use for digitizing IDs, money, passports, etc. Yikes! Spain insists on advancing their Agenda 2030 goals, when it is obvious from examples like this, or the blackout, or the hospital computer hacks, or the gov’t data breaches, Spain is not doing a good job of developing its tech infrastructure, on which the trains, among other services, rely.
– They make amazing claims of how Malaga is the world’s third most popular destination for digital nomads, and how big tech companies are relocating to the Malaga data centre. I call BS on that. These centers are not attracting the best talent the field has to offer. Just like the with the Health hiring fiasco, their offers only attract the bottom-of-the-barrel candidates, desperate for any job. None of the best high-tech or health workers, or transport managers, want to work in a socialist country with aging or under-developed facilities, massive gov’t regulation and bottom end wages. They want to work in state-of-the-art facilities and pursue their career aspirations with competitive wages. -Ed.

Ryanair increases free carry-on bag size by 33% across all European airports:
– Ryanair has completed the rollout of its bigger carry-on bag sizers at its 235 airports across Europe, the airline announced on Thursday. From September 4, all Ryanair passengers can now bring a bigger, free personal bag up to 40 x 30 x 20cm, which is 33% bigger than the EU standard free carry-on bag of 40 x 30 x 15 cm.
– Ryanair allows each passenger to bring 1 free carry-on bag on board, but these bags must be capable of fitting under each passenger’s seat. Should passengers wish to bring an extra carry-on bag, they can do so by purchasing Ryanair’s Priority Boarding service, the airline said. NATURE

Most enduring and biggest iceberg breaks apart, with more splintering to come in its death spiral:
– The world’s largest and most enduring iceberg is splintering into smaller pieces, to the point that it’s no longer the biggest chunk of ice floating in the oceans. The shrinking megaberg, known as A23A, is unlikely to survive through the end of November and may face a sudden and spectacular collapse like an avalanche of ice at sea, said University of Colorado ice scientist Ted Scambos.
– “It’s an interesting thing to watch, certainly not unprecedented,” Scambos said Thursday in an interview with The Associated Press. “But every time these happen, it’s sort of a big spectacular event.”
– A23A first broke away from Antarctica’s Filchner–Ronne Ice Shelf in 1986 along a massive crack that scientist first noticed in the 1950s and called “the Grand Chasm.” It hovered close to the southern continent for about three-and-a-half decades uneventfully until the last couple years when it drifted north to the place where massive icebergs go to die, around South Georgia Island, Scambos said.
– Earlier this year the iceberg was the size of Rhode Island and weighed in at a trillion tons, now it’s down to the size of Houston and shrinking fast. The world’s new biggest iceberg is D15A. It’s nearly twice as big as the shrunken A23A, according to Andrew Meijers of the British Antarctic Survey. – Megabergs spawning is a natural process that has happened for centuries, Meijers said; and so is their breaking apart around South Georgia Island when the current and warmer waters get hold of them, Scambos said.
