Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

SPAIN
Government Ignores The Experts- Claims Ample Grid Capacity While Utilities Warn of Widespread Saturation: {Translation, summary}
– Spain’s Ministry for Ecological Transition insists it has already granted 43 gigawatts of grid capacity since 2020, enough to double national demand, despite warnings from Endesa and Iberdrola that 83.4% of distribution nodes are saturated.
– Capacity maps published under CNMC (National Commission for Markets and Competition) rules show widespread congestion, limiting the ability to connect new demand. Electricity companies argue this reflects surging requests combined with slow and mismatched network investment. They call for urgent reinforcement and digitalisation of the grid, alongside a stable regulatory and remuneration framework to enable investment. Without this, they warn, Spain risks bottlenecks that prevent electrification of housing, industry, and mobility, undermining renewable energy potential and competitiveness.
– Even the CNMC’s current proposals are criticised as insufficient, and companies demand higher investment limits, faster planning, and efficient mechanisms to expand grid capacity. Spain plans to present smoking ban bill focused on bar terraces, beaches, stadiums; bill ignores damage to tourism sector, fails to address smoker-friendly alternatives such as membership clubs:
– Spain’s minority leftist government introduced a bill on Tuesday to ban smoking at outdoor venues including beaches, bar and restaurant terraces, bus stops and stadiums. The ban would also apply to vapes or e-cigarettes.
– The hospitality sector has criticised the bill, as Spain’s outdoor terraces, used throughout the year, are popular with smokers. Indoor smoking has been banned since 2011.
– The bill follows anti-tobacco legislation implemented in France in July, although Spain’s northern neighbour exempted café terraces and e-cigarettes from its ban.
– The new bill still requires parliamentary approval and can be amended. The continent still has the highest global smoking rates at around a quarter of adults.

Supreme Court sends Attorney General Ortiz to trial: {Translation, summary}
– The magistrate of the Supreme Court Ángel Hurtado has agreed to open an oral trial against the Attorney General of the State, Álvaro García Ortiz, for an alleged crime of revealing secrets against Alberto González Amador, demanding a bail of 150,000 euros, although he refuses to suspend Ortiz from office, as requested by the Professional and Independent Association of Prosecutors (APIF). What happened to ‘separation of powers’? – Executive Continues To Criticize Judiciary- Government now charges against the Supreme Court for García Ortiz’s bail: “It is an exaggeration”: {Translation, summary}
– Spain’s Attorney General, Álvaro García Ortiz, has been formally charged with revealing confidential information concerning Isabel Díaz Ayuso’s boyfriend, Alberto González Amador, and faces €150,000 bail to cover possible moral damages.
– The trial marks an unprecedented situation for the office. The Government, led by Prime Minister Sánchez and ministers including Pilar Alegría, has vigorously defended García Ortiz, claiming he acted in pursuit of truth and justice, and insisting he need not resign.
– However, the Executive’s public denunciations of the judicial decision, calling the bail “an exaggeration” and criticising the magistrates’ motives, raise serious concerns about the separation of powers. By framing the case as politically motivated and attacking judges for fulfilling their legal duties, the Government risks undermining judicial independence and public trust in Spain’s courts. While García Ortiz maintains his innocence, the Executive’s rhetoric illustrates a troubling trend of political authorities attempting to influence or discredit the judiciary when rulings are unfavourable. Our decisions are final, except when they are not- The US will be able to use the Morón and Rota bases to send weapons to Israel: {Translation, summary}
– Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced measures to intensify pressure on Israel over what he termed “genocide” in Gaza and the West Bank. He declared a Royal Decree Law to formalise the suspension of arms sales, a prohibition on the transit of vessels with fuel for the Israeli military through Spanish ports, and restrictions on Spanish airspace for state aircraft carrying defence equipment.
– Yet Spain will maintain the Defence Cooperation Agreement with the United States, which permits Washington to continue supplying Israel via the Morón and Rota bases. These installations remain exempt from the embargo, as Article 32 of the agreement only requires US notification and authorisation for handling munitions, without disclosure of their final destination. The bases have previously supported US military operations, such as bombers and refuelling aircraft during Donald Trump’s presidency, and are scheduled to host a new American destroyer at Rota in 2026, reinforcing US presence.

Spain doubles the EU average in population with low educational level: {Translation, summary}
– Despite recent improvements, Spain’s education system continues to underperform in key areas compared with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and European Union (EU) standards. Over one-third of adults (34.7%) still have a low level of education, more than double the EU average, and vocational training for 15- to 19-year-olds remains markedly weak at 15%, far below OECD (23%) and EU (29%) benchmarks.
– Early childhood enrolment is strong, but secondary grade repetition remains above international norms, signalling persistent retention problems. NEET rates (young people neither in education nor employment) are high at 17.6%, reflecting youth disconnection from education and work. Public spending per student is below OECD and EU levels, raising concerns over insufficient investment, even though relative effort to GDP is high. While tertiary education and early schooling show progress, structural issues in vocational pathways, secondary progression, and youth employment highlight that Spain’s education system still struggles to provide equitable, high-quality learning opportunities. UPDATE- Junts Sink Working Hours Bill: {Translation}
– The spokeswoman for Junts in Congress, Miriam Nogueras {pic}, ratified on Tuesday her rejection of the bill to reduce working hours proposed by the coalition government and justified her vote on the grounds that this measure harms the self-employed and small and medium-sized enterprises, has a cost in jobs and puts the welfare state at risk.
– At a press conference in Catalan in Congress, she explained that Junts is in favour of reducing working hours and is in favour of the welfare state, but considers that “forcing those who cannot do so to reduce the working day puts the welfare state at risk”. Nogueras has criticised that the Ministry of Labor does not explain how the reduction in working hours will be paid and maintains that “the usual ones will pay: the self-employed, small and medium-sized enterprises, neighbourhood businesses.” In her opinion, the Government “begins to build the house from the roof”, when it should focus on promoting productivity and combating absenteeism.
– As she explained, the government knew the position of Junts from the outset, but despite this it has gone ahead, so Junts does not consider that the expected defeat in this Wednesday’s vote is the responsibility of its party. ANDALUCÍA
The great saturation of the electricity grid- five autonomous communities are close to total collapse: {Translation, summary}
– Spain’s electricity networks are facing historic levels of saturation, with 83.4% of distribution nodes nationwide already fully occupied, according to data from Endesa, Iberdrola, EDP, and Naturgy. Andalusia is particularly affected, with 93% of its network nodes at full capacity, one of the highest rates in the country, making access for new industrial, energy, technology and real estate projects extremely difficult. According to aggregated data collected by Aelec from the companies’ public information, the Basque Country and La Rioja are in critical condition, with 99% of their distribution network capacity already occupied, either by active consumers or projects with existing connection rights. Extreme situations are also observed in Aragón (96%), Navarra (94%) and Andalusia (93%). Regions above the national average of saturation include Extremadura (87% of nodes fully occupied), Castilla y León (85%) and Castilla-La Mancha (85%). Conversely, networks with the most available capacity are in Asturias (26%), the Canary Islands (33%), the Balearic Islands (39%) and Galicia (49%).
– The publication of these maps, required for the first time, highlights the scale of the problem: distribution companies rejected more than 60% of requests for new connections in 2024, equating to roughly 40,000 megawatts of potential projects being refused. The saturation threatens the development of data centres, renewable energy installations, and industrial facilities across Andalusia, and the sector has repeatedly warned that billions of euros in investment could be lost unless significant upgrades and expansion of the electricity network are undertaken to meet growing demand.

MALAGA PROVINCE
Malaga Crime up 18.2%! Violent deaths double since 2023: {Translation, summary}
– Crime in Málaga rose sharply in 2024, with the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Málaga (Fiscalía de Málaga) opening 687 criminal investigations, an 18.2% increase from 2023. Violent deaths more than doubled, and offences against sexual freedom also showed increases. Hate crime and discrimination cases remain limited, while pre-trial detention requests grew, reflecting heavier workloads and more serious cases. Court reorganisation created additional pressure on prosecutors handling specialised cases.
– Overall, the data reveal a justice system under strain, struggling to manage both the rising volume and the complexity of criminal activity. While prosecutorial authorities are responding, gaps in resources, staffing, and case coordination risk slowing investigations and limiting effectiveness. The trends highlight the need for systemic improvements across all areas of criminal justice to ensure fair, timely, and comprehensive responses to crime.
– Additionally, in 2024, Spain’s judiciary faced significant disruptions due to strikes by judges and prosecutors. These industrial actions were driven by concerns over proposed judicial reforms, including changes to the selection process for judges and prosecutors. The strikes led to delays in case hearings and uncertainty about court schedules, frustrating legal planning and exacerbating the existing strain on the justice system. Fuel prices continue to fall in Malaga: {Translation, summary}
– Fuel prices continue to fall at the start of September, extending the trend that began in July and reaching the lowest levels of the summer. Specifically, 95-octane petrol in Málaga currently has an average price of €1.448 per litre, while the average price of regular diesel stands at €1.516, according to the latest data from the geoportalgasolineras website, which is operated by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (Ministerio para la Transición Ecológica y el Reto Demográfico).
– At current average prices, filling a typical 55-litre petrol tank costs €83.38, €4.76 less than at the start of the year, when it amounted to €88.05. For diesel vehicles, the same operation costs approximately €79.64, €4.12 less than in January, when it was €83.76.
– It is also possible to refuel in Málaga below these averages, saving a few euros. In the capital, this includes the Ballenoil station at 113 Avenida Velázquez, where petrol sells at €1.289 and diesel at €1.239, or the Petroprix station at 2 Calle Escritora Carmen Bravo Villasante, where prices are €1.389 and €1.299, respectively. This is one of the most special historical recreations in Malaga- ‘The Embassy’ of Alfarnate: {Translation}
– From 10 to 14 September, Alfarnate will once again dress in its finest to celebrate its Festivals in Honour of Our Lady of Monsalud, one of the most anticipated events in the local calendar. Among all the activities, the traditional Moors and Christians Festival “La Embajada” stands out once more, recognised as a Festival of Provincial Tourist Significance by the Provincial Council of Málaga (Diputación de Málaga), which will bring the celebrations to a close on Sunday. On that day, the festive atmosphere will begin at 12:00 with the opening of the medieval market in Plaza del Puente. In the afternoon, at 18:00, the performance of La Embajada will commence, preceded by the parade of the Moorish faction from Callejón Aljofar. This historical reenactment recreates the moment when the Moorish troops steal the image of the Virgin of Alfarnate, which is later recovered by the Christian army.

MIGRATION IN SPAIN
Sanchez Administration denies the migratory contingency to the Balearic Islands: {Translation}
– The Government of Spain has denied that the Balearic Islands can invoke the migration contingency, as had been requested last week by the regional government of the autonomous community.
– This was stated on Tuesday by the President of the Balearic Executive, Marga Prohens {pic, w/ Pedro}, during a plenary session of the Parliament, where she confirmed that the regional government “will pursue all available avenues” to halt the distribution of unaccompanied minor migrants. “For the Government, it is not enough that the children’s centres are at 1,000 per cent overcapacity—they want more, with less dignity,” Prohens criticised, concluding that “this is institutional racism.” Source, Spanish: https://www.europapress.es/illes-balears/noticia-gobierno-deniega-contingencia-migratoria-baleares-20250909113441.html

France’s Macron names loyalist Lecornu as new prime minister:
– French President Emmanuel Macron named loyalist Sebastien Lecornu {pic}, a one-time conservative protege who rallied behind his 2017 presidential run, as prime minister on Tuesday, defying expectations he might tack towards the left.
The choice of Lecornu, 39, indicates Macron’s determination to press on with a minority government that stands firmly behind his pro-business economic reform agenda, under which taxes on business and the wealthy have been cut and the retirement age raised.
– In handing the job to Lecornu, Macron risks alienating the Socialist Party and leaves the president and his government depending on Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally for support in parliament. France’s Macron, now dependent on cooperation from anti-immigration party National Rally, already faces pushback- Pig heads, some with ‘Macron’ scrawled on them, found outside nine Paris mosques soon after new PM announced:
– Pig heads appeared outside at least nine mosques in and around Paris on Tuesday, authorities said, with French President Emmanuel Macron’s name scrawled on five of them.
– Authorities did not say who could be behind the attacks but pledged support for France’s Muslim population at a time of rising anti-Islamic sentiment. France has Europe’s largest population of Muslims, over 6 million, for whom eating pork is forbidden. MIDDLE EAST
Israel attacks Hamas leaders in Qatar, drawing condemnation:
– Israel launched an airstrike against arch foe Hamas leaders in Qatar on Tuesday, expanding military actions that have ranged across the Middle East to include the Gulf Arab state where the Palestinian Islamist group has long had its political base. In Washington, a White House official said Israel had notified the U.S. about the strike beforehand.
– Qatar condemned Tuesday’s attack as “cowardly” and called it a flagrant violation of international law. The assault is likely to deal a serious, if not fatal, blow to the ceasefire efforts, especially since negotiations have often taken place in Qatar. Regional power Saudi Arabia denounced what it called a “brutal Israeli aggression” against Qatar’s sovereignty. Egypt said the attack set a dangerous precedent.
– Israeli officials told Reuters the strike was aimed at top Hamas leaders including Khalil al-Hayya, its exiled Gaza chief and top negotiator. His son was killed in the attack, two Hamas sources told Reuters. Bicycle Racing News- About a thousand people block the final stretch of La Vuelta in Mos- “Today’s stage has been won by Palestine”: {Translation}
– Around a thousand people blocked the final stretch of the stage of La Vuelta Ciclista a España on the afternoon of Tuesday in the town of Mos, in the province of Pontevedra, forcing the stage to finish 8 kilometres short of the planned finish due to new protests in support of the Palestinian people: “Today’s stage was won by Palestine.”
– The demonstration was held at Alto de San Cosme, where the civic group Plataforma Cívica Vigo Pro-Palestina gathered from 16:30 on Tuesday, arguing that La Vuelta “whitewashes genocide” by allowing the participation of the Israel Premier Tech team. Hundreds of people shouted slogans such as “La Vuelta sponsors genocide in Palestine,” “Europe sponsors, Israel kills,” “This is not a war, it is genocide,” and “Palestine will win,” criticising the participation of the Israeli team in the race.
– Tensions arose during the protest when demonstrators formed a human blockade on the road where the cyclists were due to pass. They were subsequently cleared by police officers. The National Police (Policía Nacional) and Civil Guard (Guardia Civil) established a cordon to prevent protesters from returning to the road. Despite these measures, the race organisers ultimately decided to end the stage 8 kilometres before the scheduled finish to avoid further incidents. In response, the protesters shouted “They didn’t reach here,” “La Vuelta stopped,” and “Today’s stage was won by Palestine.” The most repeated chant during the nearly two-hour demonstration was “Accomplices,” directed at members of the security forces.
– The demonstration, marked by numerous Palestinian flags, also featured placards supporting Palestine, dolls representing children, and cries of “It could be your child.”
– Despite the disruption, the Civil Guard confirmed that no arrests were made on Tuesday, in contrast to the previous Sunday in the Lugo province stage of La Vuelta, where up to ten people were detained. Earlier Tuesday morning, along various stretches of the Mos route, workers painted over pro-Palestinian flags and messages that had been painted on the road.
– Several other protests took place during Tuesday’s stage. In Pontevedra, for instance, the town’s mayor, Miguel Anxo Lores, attended one of the demonstrations.
