SPAIN
The abuse of the separation of powers continues- Second Vice-President, communist Yolanda Díaz criticizes Judge Peinado and his case against Begoña Gómez, says Sanchez is the victim of abuses: “I have never seen such an investigation in my life.”: {Translation}
– The Second Vice President, Yolanda Díaz, has sharply criticised Juan Carlos Peinado, asserting regarding the case he is handling involving the wife of the Prime Minister, Begoña Gómez, that “I have never seen such an investigation in my life.” Furthermore, she stated generally that there are “judges” whose conduct “is irregular,” who “manifest themselves in robes” and “intervene in political life.”
– In remarks to TVE, reported by Europa Press, she rebuked the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, for contributing to “absolute harassment” by the right-wing against the Prime Minister’s “private life.” Díaz added that she could speak of the “business dealings” of Feijóo’s sister or the “dangerous friendships” of the opposition leader, but she will not, as she condemns that style of politics.
– Asked about Begoña Gómez’s testimony this Wednesday in the judicial proceedings overseen by Peinado, and whether she considers the case political, Díaz first expressed solidarity with Pedro Sánchez and his family, who suffer from a strategy of “destroying everything by the right-wing.”
– “There is a limit, and I will not take part in this show, because this is absolute harassment of private life,” the Vice President stressed, adding that Feijóo has “many dangerous friendships,” extending beyond Marcial Dorado, convicted of drug trafficking and with whom Feijóo was photographed years ago. Díaz also expressed full support for the “hundreds and hundreds of justice professionals” in Spain who “do their work correctly every day,” but also stated that it is “evident” that some magistrates’ conduct “is irregular.”
– On Peinado, she reiterated that “she has never seen an investigation like this in her life,” a view shared, she said, by “many legal professionals” in Spain.
– Returning to the PP leader, following the recent publication of a video of him in a karaoke labelled ‘I like fruit,’ Díaz accused Feijóo of fomenting “hate” and “working for Vox,” something she warned will be “very costly in democratic terms.” {“I like fruit” is a play on words in Spanish: it mimics the pronunciation of “hijo de puta” (“son of a bitch”) in a humorous or ironic way. It’s used as a pun to avoid saying the curse outright while still conveying the insult. -Ed.} “Calling the Prime Minister a son of a bitch is not only a brutal lack of courtesy, it shows the absence of a political project by the far-right and the right in our country; it is nothingness,” she emphasised, asserting that right-wing voters do not want Feijóo to emulate the style of the Madrid regional president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso.
– She concluded by predicting that Feijóo is mistaken and will not be able to govern the country, given that it is “impossible” to return once the path of “breaking institutional norms” has begun. The harsh sentence of US Judge John D. Bates that reproaches Sánchez for the non-payment of renewables- courts have authorised seizure of bank accounts, government buildings, and cultural institutions: {Translation, summary}
– Judge John D. Bates {pic} has delivered a resounding rebuke to the Sánchez Government, ordering the enforcement in the United States of a 35 million euro award over Spain’s retroactive cuts to renewable energy premiums. The ruling emphasises that Spain cannot reopen issues already rejected by the ICSID Tribunal and its Annulment Committee. Bates criticised Spain’s attempts to separate financial obligations from the reasoning behind the award, stating such manoeuvres are baseless and that Spain cannot disregard binding international treaties.
– This judgement allows U.S. authorities to seize Spanish commercial assets if payments are delayed, adding to a series of international setbacks. Australian courts recently upheld four additional investor awards totalling around 469 million euros, potentially reaching 500 million with interest. In the United Kingdom, Spanish sovereign bonds worth 1 billion euros risk default, and courts have authorised seizure of bank accounts, government buildings, and cultural institutions. Belgian courts have ordered Eurocontrol payments to be withheld to satisfy Spain’s obligations.
– Observers view these rulings as a direct critique of Sánchez’s handling of renewable energy cuts and international obligations, highlighting repeated legal defeats and perceived mismanagement by the Spanish government. The cumulative effect portrays Spain as failing to honour commitments, prompting financial and reputational consequences abroad. MALAGA CITY
Mayor of Málaga calls for clear national protocol on avian flu after dead birds found in local park: {Translation, summary}
– Málaga’s mayor, Francisco de la Torre, has criticised the Ministry of Health for failing to establish a clear protocol for dealing with possible cases of avian flu in public areas. His remarks followed the discovery of dead birds in Huelin Park, where samples are being analysed in Madrid. He suspects the presence of avian flu, already confirmed in parts of Andalusia such as Seville’s Tamarguillo Park.
– De la Torre questioned whether parks should close in such situations and stressed the need for national guidelines. He noted that experts consider the risk of bird-to-human transmission minimal and largely confined to contact with live birds, urging calm and reliance on scientific evidence rather than social media alarm. Meanwhile, the Junta of Andalusia has issued its own protocol, requiring park managers to remove dead birds safely, prevent public and pet contact, and temporarily close parks for cleaning and disinfection when necessary. Poland shoots down several Russian drones over its airspace with NATO help: “We are closer to an open conflict”: {Translation, summary}
– In the early hours, more than a dozen Russian drones violated Polish airspace, forcing the temporary closure of Warsaw and several other airports. Polish and NATO forces, including F-16s, Dutch F-35s, Italian AWACS, German Patriot systems, and refuelling aircraft, intercepted the threat. The Polish government denounced the attack as an “act of aggression” and invoked Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty. Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed 19 airspace breaches and the discovery of missile fragments, warning that Europe now stands closer to open conflict than at any time since the Second World War. He stressed that the drones had entered from Belarus, though Minsk claimed they had been diverted by electronic warfare.
– Russia admitted to launching large-scale strikes on Ukraine but denied targeting Poland. Its Defence Ministry argued that the drones’ limited range made deep penetration into Polish territory impossible, while the Kremlin declined detailed comment. According to Reuters, Belarus stated that it tracked some drones that “lost their course because they were jammed” during an aerial exchange between Russia and Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the episode as a dangerous escalation and called for more weapons and sanctions.
– Although no casualties occurred, one drone struck a residential building near the border. European leaders condemned the incursion as deliberate and reckless. NATO affirmed its readiness to defend all allied territory, pledging solidarity with Poland. US accuses Spain of “encouraging terrorists” from Hamas over Pedro Sánchez’s measures: {Translation, summary}
– The United States has strongly criticised Spain after Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced nine measures against Israel, which a US State Department spokesperson claimed “embolden Hamas terrorists.” The official, speaking anonymously, said it was “deeply worrying” that Spain, a NATO ally, would restrict operations and distance itself from Israel on the same day six people were killed in Jerusalem.
-Sánchez’s measures include banning ships carrying fuel for Israel’s armed forces from Spanish ports, blocking Israeli state aircraft carrying weapons from Spanish airspace, and imposing an arms embargo. They also expand economic pressure by prohibiting trade in weapons and munitions, restricting military equipment shipments, and increasing humanitarian aid. Spain will provide €10 million more to UNRWA and raise total aid to Gaza to €150 million by 2026.
– Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Saar accused Sánchez’s government of hostility, antisemitism, and corruption, while UN agencies and many countries describe Israel’s campaign in Gaza as genocide. The PSOE is calling for a second medical team at the La Viñuela health centre: {Translation}
– The Deputy Secretary General of the PSOE in Málaga, Antonio Yuste, has called upon the Junta of Andalusia for the “urgent provision” of a second medical team for the health centre in La Viñuela. At a press conference alongside the town’s mayor, José Juan Jiménez, and councillor Mari Ángeles Fernández, Yuste stressed on Wednesday that “this is not a demand, but a right of more than 10,000 residents who depend on this centre.”
– “Sadly, we have lived through episodes where lives have been lost on the road because the appropriate ambulance was not available here,” he lamented. “Moreno Bonilla promised change, and he is delivering it, but for the worse: in education, in healthcare, and in public transport. With examples such as this, it is clear that he is dismantling public healthcare,” criticised the Socialist representative. In this regard, he cited what happened this past weekend at the regional hospital of the Axarquía, “where users could not even access drinking water.”
– For his part, the mayor of La Viñuela, José Juan Jiménez, recalled that this health centre covers emergencies in Periana, Alcaucín, Canillas de Aceituno, La Viñuela and Sedella, “practically the whole of Northern Axarquía.” “We have been demanding this second medical team for a long time and the Junta still does not listen. Our population is sufficient. The statistics, however much they deny it, prove us right. We fall within the ranges and within the very protocol that the Junta itself sets to provide a second team to a health centre. But the attitude of the Junta is negative. The reality is that they are discrediting and undermining public healthcare in order to benefit the private sector,” he denounced.
– Lastly, councillor Mari Ángeles Fernández stressed that “the Junta only responds with statistics and numbers, but people are not figures.” “We need that, when we arrive in the afternoon or evening at the health centre, there is a doctor to attend us. I speak not only as a councillor, but as a neighbour who has gone many times and found no one there. Health is not a game, political colours do not matter: we need solutions now,” she concluded. SATSE takes the lack of nurses and beds in the ICU of the Regional Hospital of Malaga to the Ombudsman- “We can’t take it anymore”; meanwhile management claims service is “adequate” (Isn’t that reassuring?): {Translation}
– The SATSE Nursing Union today denounced the “unsustainable situation” facing the Critical Care Unit (ICU) at Malaga Regional University Hospital, particularly because nurses “face unbearable shifts and a serious shortage of staff,” which jeopardizes the physical and emotional health of professionals.
– The Regional Delegation of Health and Consumer Affairs in Malaga explained today that “the staffing levels for the holiday plan in the service have been adequate for the care activity during the summer period, although, due to unforeseen circumstances, September began with fewer staff, in response to which the hospital has hired enough staff to provide the coverage that allows for quality and safety guarantees.”
– According to SATSE, the ICU has 10 beds closed due to a lack of staff and “the current workforce is clearly insufficient to guarantee safe care.” The union explains that each nurse is assigned up to three critical patients, “when scientific recommendations establish that they should only care for one. Even patients on ECMO therapy, which requires the exclusive and permanent care of two nurses due to its extreme severity, are being cared for by a single professional who must also take responsibility for other patients.”
– SATSE clarifies that the general feeling among the nurses in the service is summed up in the following sentence: “We can’t take it anymore.” In fact, the nursing staff has brought this situation to the attention of the Ombudsman, “sending out a genuine SOS.” The nurses speak of an extreme situation: in many shifts, there is a shortage of between five and six professionals, despite the fact that “the staff tries to cover the shortages with voluntary double shifts.”
– The union says the situation is “unsustainable” and that nurses can only focus on urgent matters, “neglecting essential care such as patient demonstration, ulcer prevention, and emotional support for patients and families,” which is why the union is calling for urgent solutions.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)
Light-based chip can boost power efficiency of AI tasks up to 100-fold:
– A team at the University of Florida has developed a new kind of computer chip that uses light with electricity to perform one of the most power-intensive parts of artificial intelligence- image recognition and similar pattern-finding tasks. Using light dramatically cuts the power needed to perform these tasks, with efficiency 10 or even 100 times that of current chips performing the same calculations. Using this approach could help rein in the enormous demand for electricity that is straining power grids while enabling higher performance AI models and systems.
– The team also demonstrated that the chip could process multiple data streams simultaneously by using lasers of different colors- a technique known as wavelength multiplexing. Full article: https://techxplore.com/news/2025-09-based-chip-boost-power-efficiency.html

Insurer cleared of having to pay €13,634 for injuries caused by a dog being fed by neighbour: {Translation, summary}
– The Provincial Court of Málaga has overturned a ruling obliging insurer Asefa to pay €13,634 to a man attacked by a dog he was temporarily caring for in Fuengirola. The incident occurred in 2018, when the owners of “Rubia,” a female American Staffordshire Terrier, asked an acquaintance to feed her and two other dogs while they travelled. During feeding, Rubia attacked, causing injuries.
– The Fuengirola court acquitted the owners but ordered Asefa to pay damages. On appeal, the Provincial Court ruled the temporary carer acted voluntarily and was neither owner nor co-possessor, so the dog’s policy did not apply. Judges stressed he had received no payment and, as a third party outside the insurance contract, could not claim against the company. A related claim against Mapfre, under the owners’ home insurance, was also dismissed since at the time the carer was deemed the possessor and thus not covered.
