Verdiales Contest in Benagalbón: Sat, 20 Sept, from 6pm
Benagalbón will celebrate this Saturday the 30th edition of the Traditional Verdiales Contest with the clash of pandas in the Montes style, which will feature 20 groups. The contest will begin at 18:00, when the pandas will make their entrance to the rhythm of the paseo until reaching the little square by the church, where the “clash of pandas” will take place – a kind of duel between two pandas who quicken the tempo until one of them loses the beat.
The decorated streets are crowded with neighbours and visitors, lovers and curious about the festival of the verdiales, while the pandas first tackle the traditional clash at the foot of the Church of Our Lady of Candelaria, and then turn the entire town into an immense stage where partygoers and listeners touch hands in hand.

SPAIN
Electricity companies insist on pointing to REE as “solely responsible” for the blackout due to its lack of foresight: {Translation}
– The Director of Regulation of the Association of Electricity Companies (Aelec), Marta Castro, has insisted on placing all blame for the power blackout of 28 April on Red Eléctrica (REE) “as the sole party responsible”, since, in her opinion, the cause of the incident was a failure in voltage control due to “not having sufficient synchronous capacity coupled into the system”. “And here, unfortunately, there is only one responsible party, and that party is the one that must guarantee the security of supply in this country, and also guarantee that there are no failures in voltage control, and that is Red Eléctrica,” Castro stated in her appearance before the Senate Investigation Committee on the blackout.
– The Aelec executive, whose members include Iberdrola, Endesa, and EDP España, considered that Red Eléctrica has all the technical and legal tools to carry out its functions, and that on 27 and 28 April it erred by “not foreseeing the need for synchronous capacity” in the system, which led to the zero-power event. “Red Eléctrica faced a problem as big as an elephant that day, and it had only an ant to solve it. That is the reality. And this is not about how many megawatts came out or were lost, or which plant tripped first or second. The lack of foresight is also a failure,” she asserted.
– “A death foretold”. In fact, she recalled that in the days before the blackout “what amounted to a death foretold” was already being foreshadowed, noting that on 16, 22, and 24 April there had already been “significant” increases in voltage in the electricity transmission network, with warnings and incidents reported by companies such as FCC, Repsol, and Adif. She also stressed that historical data from recent years already indicated that April is a month which “structurally, and not circumstantially” presents problems in voltage levels. “The blackout on the 28th was a death foretold that everyone could see coming,” she highlighted, adding that Red Eléctrica had already stated in previous years that it did not have sufficient tools to guarantee voltage control.
– In this regard, she estimated that on that day the electricity system “was held together by pins”, which caused it to collapse at the first contingency, and she defended the tripping of protections at some plants as a response to the irregular level of voltage fluctuation.
– The plants operated “with complete normality”. She further defended that all the plants of Aelec’s members “operated that day with complete normality” and complied with all required protocols, thereby responding to the accusations made a week earlier in the Senate by the President of Redeia, Beatriz Corredor, who also blamed the electricity companies for their “poor management” on the day of the blackout. “In the face of possible breaches or possible improper trips, the CNMC has already requested the data and it has been verified that both voltage control and other aspects were fulfilled. Therefore, I can say that the plants operated with complete normality,” Castro indicated.
– Likewise, responding to Corredor’s specific claim that the plant where the blackout originated had failed in 2024 because of an “experiment”, the Aelec Director of Regulation replied: “Experiments belong in the laboratory.”
“The disconnection of a plant in Badajoz, Cuenca, or Seville cannot be the reason for a blackout of an entire electricity system,” she stressed. Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia is ready to raise its highest tower and become Europe’s tallest church:
– After well over a century under construction, Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia basilica is ready to raise its immense central tower and become the tallest Christian church in Europe. The basilica’s General Director Xavier Martínez said Thursday that “the tower will be finished at the end of this year or the beginning of 2026.” “This is an important moment in the history of the building of the Sagrada Familia because it will reach its maximum height,” Martínez told The Associated Press. “We are used to seeing skyscrapers like those in the United States (go up), but it is remarkable that in the 21st century we are building a cathedral.”
– Once the gigantic Tower of Jesus Christ is up, the masterpiece of architect Antoni Gaudí will rise to 172 meters (564 feet). That will make it taller than the Ulmer Münster church in southern Germany, which tops out at 162 meters (531.5 feet). The first pieces are already in place and the rest will be added in phases over the coming months. Once complete, the structure will be crowned by a cross and tightly surrounded by five other towers, one dedicated to Mary and four slightly shorter ones for the four evangelists.
– Work on the facades and interior will continue for several years, the church’s head of construction Esteve Camps said, but the goal is to finish building work in approximately a decade from now. The UCO certifies the authenticity of the audios of Koldo García that incriminate Cerdán and Ábalos: {Translation}
– The Central Operational Unit (UCO) has knocked down a pillar of the defence strategies of José Luis Ábalos and Santos Cerdán by concluding that the incriminating audios found in Koldo García’s house are authentic. “No traces have been found that show alterations, manipulations or anomalous behaviour,” says the report recently delivered to the Supreme Court.
– These eight audio files have an enormous weight in the investigation led by Judge Leopoldo Puente, since they contain conversations with the two former secretaries of Organization of the PSOE about the rigging of public works for which they are being investigated. ANDALUCÍA
The Junta de Andalucía cancels almost 10,600 irregular tourist homes: {Translation, summary}
– The cancellation of nearly 10,600 Tourist Use Dwellings (VUT) in Andalusia since February 2024 has had serious implications for accommodation landlords. Property owners whose registrations were revoked can no longer legally market their homes as tourist lodgings. This entails direct revenue loss, alongside exposure to penalties if they attempt to continue operations outside the legal framework. The enforcement is reinforced by police collaboration and stricter digital oversight, increasing the risk of sanctions for non-compliant landlords.
– At the same time, the upgraded Tourism Register introduces automatic alerts when registering dwellings in restricted urban areas, which may deter owners from entering the market in key tourist municipalities. Future regulation being considered – including temporary licences, tougher requirements, and heavier fines – points to a progressively restrictive environment for small landlords reliant on tourism.
– Opposition parties underline that cancellations have not stopped VUT growth, while thousands still operate illegally. This creates uncertainty for legitimate landlords, who face stricter controls while competitors may evade regulation. Moreover, growing political conflict between the Junta and central Government increases instability in the sector. Overall, landlords confront mounting compliance burdens, reduced security of tenure for licences, and the prospect of shrinking profitability in Andalusian tourist rentals. UKRAINE WAR
The only building damaged in last week’s Russian drone incursion into Poland was not hit by Russia… but by a NATO missile: {Translation, summary}
– Polish intelligence services suspect that the damage sustained by a house during last week’s massive Russian drone incursion did not result directly from these unmanned aircraft, but rather from the impact of a missile fired by a Western fighter deployed for interception duties. The damage to the roof of a house in the town of Wyryki, 15 kilometres from the Belarusian border, was the most visible image of the risk posed to the local population by the entry into Polish airspace of nearly twenty Russian drones, which Warsaw claims was deliberate.
– However, experts now believe it may not have been caused by a drone. “Everything indicates that it was a missile fired by our aircraft in the defence of Poland,” explained the coordinator of the intelligence agency, Tomasz Siemoniak, who avoided reaching final conclusions pending the completion of ongoing investigations. The Polish Armed Forces deployed F-16 and F-35 fighters to contain the incursion, in operations that also involved other NATO countries. HEALTH
Public health service in Andalucia reminds the public ‘if this phone number calls you, please pick up’:
– The Servicio Andaluz de Salud (SAS) public health service for the Andalucía region has warned on numerous occasions that, if people receive a call from the 955 800 008 number, they should pick it up as this could be their doctor or nurse. This number is a single telephone number established by the regional ministry of health for outgoing calls from primary care centres.
– For some time, Andalusian public health users received calls from different numbers, “which made it difficult to identify the caller”, as the regional government stated. This is why, this single number was established. The caller on the other side of the line will always be either your GP, a locum doctor or a nurse. Lecanemab, a drug that slows down the progression of Alzheimer’s, will be available in private healthcare in Spain by the end of the year, should be available thru public health next year: {Translation, summary}
– Lecanemab, a new treatment shown to slow Alzheimer’s progression by 27%, has been approved by the EMA and will reach Spain’s private healthcare system by the end of 2025. According to Dr Juan Fortea, only a handful of patients who can afford the high costs will initially access it, since in the United States it costs 26,000 dollars a year, and in Europe, even at lower prices, it will still involve tens of thousands of euros once hospital administration and tests are included.
– Spain’s drug regulator (Aemps) is negotiating the price, a process considered among the slowest in Europe. Fortea estimates that public healthcare may not cover the treatment until 2026, once the autonomous regions accept funding. Doctors argue that without public reimbursement, the drug will remain inaccessible to the majority of patients, leaving early access limited to private hospitals. Pressure is mounting for rapid integration into the public system. RELIGION
Leo XIV closes the door to the ordination of women priests and the blessing of gay marriages: {Translation, summary}
– In the first excerpts of the book-interview conducted by Elise Ann Allen the Pope closes the door “for the moment” to allowing the ordination of women priests, although he will continue to appoint women to positions of responsibility.
“The issue becomes a contentious issue when the specific question about ordination is asked. The synod had spoken specifically of the ordination, perhaps, of women deaconesses, which has been a question that has been studied for many years. There have been different commissions appointed by different popes to say: what can we do about it? I think it will continue to be a problem. I, for the moment, do not intend to change the Church’s teaching on the subject,” says Prevost, who regrets that some are calling for this reform to “invite women to become clerical.”
– There will also be no changes in the doctrine regarding the recognition of equal marriage, or the recognition of trans people. “The teaching of the Church will continue as it is, and that is what I have to say about it for now,” the pope said, asking for support for the traditional family.
