Verdiales Contest in Benagalbón: Sat, 20 Sept, from 6pm
Benagalbón will celebrate this Saturday the 30th edition of the Traditional Verdiales Contest with the clash of pandas in the Montes style, which will feature 20 groups. The contest will begin at 18:00, when the pandas will make their entrance to the rhythm of the paseo until reaching the little square by the church, where the “clash of pandas” will take place – a kind of duel between two pandas who quicken the tempo until one of them loses the beat.
The decorated streets are crowded with neighbours and visitors, lovers and curious about the festival of the verdiales, while the pandas first tackle the traditional clash at the foot of the Church of Our Lady of Candelaria, and then turn the entire town into an immense stage where partygoers and listeners touch hands in hand.

The largest bienmesabe in the world {pic} will be tasted in Antequera this Saturday, 20 Sept, from noon:
– The Paseo Real will host the fourth edition of this initiative, which will also offer, as a new feature, a giant paella and a traditional Spanish dish called porra.
– From 12:00 midday the bar service will open, serving, as a new feature, a giant paella and porra antequerana. At 17:30 comes the most anticipated moment: the distribution of the world’s largest bienmesabe, prepared by Piobiem, measuring more than 25 metres and cut into 5,000 portions.
– The donation per portion remains unchanged from previous years: €3 in advance or €4 on the day. Each ticket includes a serving of bienmesabe and a drink (water, coffee, flavored milk-drink or wine). Special tickets for coeliacs will also be available, to be purchased beforehand at Piobiem, guaranteeing food safety. In addition, as a novelty, individual gluten-free servings and products will be offered so that everyone can enjoy the occasion.
– According to the Town Council, the giant bienmesabe dessert requires 3,200 eggs, 125 kilos of cabello de ángel (pumpkin preserve), 100 kilos of sugar, 65 litres of syrup, 30 kilos of icing sugar and 85 sponge bases.
– After the distribution of the bienmesabe, local groups such as Funky Monster Band, Dr. Jones and Los Pacos will perform, with additional entertainment from DJ DoubleP.

Electricity companies insist on pointing to REE as “solely responsible” for the blackout due to its lack of foresight: {Translation}

In fact, she recalled that in the days before the blackout “what amounted to a death foretold” was already being foreshadowed, noting that on 16, 22, and 24 April there had already been “significant” increases in voltage in the electricity transmission network, with warnings and incidents reported by companies such as FCC, Repsol, and Adif. She also stressed that historical data from recent years already indicated that April is a month which “structurally, and not circumstantially” presents problems in voltage levels. “The blackout on the 28th was a death foretold that everyone could see coming,” she highlighted, adding that Red Eléctrica had already stated in previous years that it did not have sufficient tools to guarantee voltage control.
– In this regard, she estimated that on that day the electricity system “was held together by pins”, which caused it to collapse at the first contingency, and she defended the tripping of protections at some plants as a response to the irregular level of voltage fluctuation.
– The plants operated “with complete normality”. She further defended that all the plants of Aelec’s members “operated that day with complete normality” and complied with all required protocols, thereby responding to the accusations made a week earlier in the Senate by the President of Redeia, Beatriz Corredor, who also blamed the electricity companies for their “poor management” on the day of the blackout. “In the face of possible breaches or possible improper trips, the CNMC has already requested the data and it has been verified that both voltage control and other aspects were fulfilled. Therefore, I can say that the plants operated with complete normality,” Castro indicated.
– Likewise, responding to Corredor’s specific claim that the plant where the blackout originated had failed in 2024 because of an “experiment”, the Aelec Director of Regulation replied: “Experiments belong in the laboratory.”

Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia is ready to raise its highest tower and become Europe’s tallest church:
– After well over a century under construction, Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia basilica is ready to raise its immense central tower and become the tallest Christian church in Europe. The basilica’s General Director Xavier Martínez said Thursday that “the tower will be finished at the end of this year or the beginning of 2026.” “This is an important moment in the history of the building of the Sagrada Familia because it will reach its maximum height,” Martínez told The Associated Press. “We are used to seeing skyscrapers like those in the United States (go up), but it is remarkable that in the 21st century we are building a cathedral.”

III International Gastronomic Festival comes to five municipalities in the Axarquía: {Translation, summary}

The only building damaged in last week’s Russian drone incursion into Poland was not hit by Russia… but by a NATO missile: {Translation, summary}

– The Servicio Andaluz de Salud (SAS) public health service for the Andalucía region has warned on numerous occasions that, if people receive a call from the 955 800 008 number, they should pick it up as this could be their doctor or nurse. This number is a single telephone number established by the regional ministry of health for outgoing calls from primary care centres.
– For some time, Andalusian public health users received calls from different numbers, “which made it difficult to identify the caller”, as the regional government stated.
