SPAIN
The Mental Health Crisis (I blame smartphones)– The main reason for sick leave in Spain in under-30s, second leading cause for 30+: {Translation, summary}
– Between 2018 and 2023, sick leave in Spain increased across all causes, with mental health exhibiting the most pronounced rise. Among workers under 30, particularly women, mental health accounts for 30% of lost working days.
– For those over 30, it is now the second leading cause of absence, after musculoskeletal pain, and together these two conditions explain over two-thirds of the increase in absenteeism. Incidence per thousand employees rose 64% for mental health and 22% for musculoskeletal pain, while growth in cancer and cardiovascular-related absences was more modest. Long-term cases, lasting over a year, and repeated absences were major contributors to this trend, with mental health prevalence up 147% and musculoskeletal pain up 93%. – Sectors most affected include administrative and auxiliary services, water and sanitation, and healthcare. While Andalucía does not record the highest regional rates of mental health-related sick leave, national trends indicate a growing impact on the workforce, signalling the need for targeted mental health and occupational support measures. ANDALUCÍA
Is October 13 a public holiday in Andalucia? Will there be a long weekend? Yes!:
– October arrives, bringing with it one of the national holidays marked in red on the calendar: 12 October, Hispanic Day. However, in 2025 this holiday falls on a Sunday. Many are therefore wondering what will happen: whether the day off will remain on Sunday or be moved to Monday, as occurs with other holidays. In such cases, it is up to each autonomous community to decide.
– This year, five communities are shifting the holiday from 12 to 13 October. Andalucía is among them, meaning that by moving the day to Monday, all eight provinces will enjoy a long weekend, as it combines with the regular weekend break. It is not the only region making this adjustment; Aragón, Asturias, Castilla y León, and Extremadura will do the same. The Regional Government introduces an income tax deduction for people with celiac disease: {Translation, summary}
– The Junta de Andalucía has announced a new income tax deduction aimed at supporting coeliac sufferers and their families. From 2026, taxpayers affected by the disease, either directly or through a spouse or child, will be entitled to a €100 deduction in the regional section of income tax. The measure seeks to ease the financial burden of gluten-free diets, with products such as bread and pasta costing up to four times more than conventional equivalents. President Juanma Moreno described the initiative as “a small step, but a step forward,” noting that coeliac disease has no medication and must be controlled entirely through diet. The reform is expected to benefit around 30,000 Andalusians, with an estimated financial impact of nearly €4 million. It forms part of a broader package of tax cuts for 2026, which also covers rental housing, pet ownership, and participation in sporting activities. MALAGA PROVINCE
The ex-storm Gabrielle leaves light showers on the coast and mountains of Málaga: {Translation, summary}
– The storm ex-Gabrielle, once feared to bring severe downpours to Malaga, proved far weaker than forecast. The warning was lifted on Sunday evening, signalling that the rainfall would be far less than initially expected, as the system shifted northwards towards the Valencian Community, where the impact was greater. In Malaga province, notable rain was recorded in the humid enclave of Los Reales de Sierra Bermeja, which received 16 litres per square metre, while other locations such as Cortes de la Frontera, Pujerra, Fuente Piedra, and Jubrique registered between 4 and 10.
– In many areas the rain was light, and in the capital barely perceptible. Forecasts suggest showers could persist until 6 p.m. Monday, and possibly again Tuesday and Wednesday, mainly overnight. Daytime temperatures hover around 25 degrees, with unusually warm nights above 20, while the weekend outlook points to sunnier skies and highs of 27–28.

TORROX
The new judicial headquarters of Torrox opens a battle front between PP and PSOE: {Translation, summary}
– The long-delayed construction of new courts in Torrox has sparked a political dispute between the PP-led municipal government and the PSOE opposition. The PSOE, represented by Josele Aguilar and Mari Nieves Ramírez, accused the Junta de Andalucía and Mayor Óscar Medina of discriminating against Torrox, claiming residents were expected to provide land and fund the building, unlike other municipalities such as Torremolinos, that were Junta financed. They argued that the current 19th-century courthouse is inadequate and demanded fair treatment from the Junta.
– The PP, through Paula Moreno, countered that the agreement is highly beneficial: the Town Hall advances the construction costs, but the Junta will pay an annual fee of €205,000 over 30 years, totalling over €6.2 million. This reimburses the initial investment and provides an additional return, equivalent to €1.50 for every euro invested. The former court building will return to municipal use, improving public services. The project, pending for decades, is now proceeding under PP management despite PSOE opposition. NERJA
Nerja Town Council will replace the awnings on the shopping streets in the town centre: {Translation}
– Nerja’s Governing Board has given initial approval to a €434,395 project to renew the awnings of the town centre’s main commercial streets. Fully financed with EU NextGeneration funds, the initiative is part of the “Sustainable Nerja” plan. The project is open for public consultation for 20 working days before final approval and tendering.
– Mayor José Alberto Armijo explained that the new awnings will provide shade, create a more pleasant atmosphere for walking, and boost local trade during the summer months. Councillor for Trade Antonio López called the project a key step for both commerce and tourism, stressing its impact on visitor experience. Streets to benefit include Pintada, Puerta del Mar, Almirante Ferrándiz, Hernando de Carabeo, Diputación Provincial, El Barrio and Málaga. UKRAINE WAR
Israel abandons neutrality in Ukraine conflict– Sends US-made Patriot anti-missile defence systems to Ukraine:
– Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced Saturday that Israel for the first time had sent a US-made Patriot anti-missile defence system. “The Israeli [Patriot] system is operating in Ukraine. It has been operating for a month. We will receive two Patriot systems in the fall,” Zelensky told reporters as he returned from the UN summit, where he met Trump. Kyiv is scrambling to beef up its air defences to repel daily Russian barrages of drones and missiles, especially ahead of winter, with heating infrastructure a frequent target of the attacks.
– Israel, despite close ties with the United States, has tried to stay out of the Russia-Ukraine conflict but has sought cordial relations with Moscow in part due to its historic influence in neighbouring Syria. However, Russia’s role there has diminished since Islamist-led fighters toppled veteran leader Bashar al-Assad in December. {Russia is a supporter of Iran, an enemy of Israel. So it makes sense to Israel to support Ukraine over Russia. The issue is further complicated by the large number of Russians residing in Israel. -Ed.}
– Israel has still been adamant it will not share with Ukraine its state-of-the-art Iron Dome defence system built with US support that has proved crucial in shooting down incoming missiles in Israel’s own ongoing war. Assessing Reports That Ukraine Is Preparing A False Flag Drone Provocation Against NATO:
– Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova raised global awareness of Hungarian media reports about a planned Ukrainian false flag drone provocation against NATO in her Telegram post on Friday. She hyperlinked to one of the outlets, Pesti Srácok, a little more than two hours after they published their editorial. It ended by citing unspecified Telegram posts about Ukraine’s plans to bomb logistics hubs in Poland and Romania with captured Russian drones and then blame Moscow.
– Accordingly, there’s no solid intelligence about this, just social media reports that were picked up by the Russian Foreign Ministry and amplified by their spokeswoman. Nevertheless, this doesn’t mean that such a scenario isn’t credible, especially given the larger context. Full article: https://korybko.substack.com/p/assessing-reports-that-ukraine-is

Tennis News– Frustrated Alcaraz survives Ruud scare to reach final:
– World number one Carlos Alcaraz will face Taylor Fritz in the Japan Open final after coming from behind to beat Casper Ruud in Tokyo. The Spaniard dropped the opening set – the first he has dropped so far in the tournament – but recovered to beat the Dane 3-6 6-3 6-4.
– It was Alcaraz’s 66th win of the season and he is the fourth male player in history after Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic to reach nine successive ATP-level finals.
– Second seed Fritz, who defeated Alcaraz in the Laver Cup last week, beat compatriot Jenson Brooksby 6-4 6-3 in the other semi-final. Full article: https://www.bbc.com/sport/tennis/articles/cr7012742emo
REAL ESTATE
Bare ownership sales in Malaga– how you can snap up a property at half the market value:
– This type of financing scheme occasionally appears among the numerous listings posted on real estate websites in Spain. It combines the interests of the buyer, who purchases below market price in exchange for having to wait to enjoy their property until the seller dies, with those of the vendor, who obtains liquidity and retains the right of usufruct, meaning they can live in and enjoy their home for as long as they live.
– You only have to take a look at the web portal Idealista to see some examples where, under the heading of ‘Ideal for investors’, there is bare ownership property for sale at prices far below their current value: “In El Ejido (Malaga), a 90-square-metre property valued at 290,000 euros in exchange for a lump sum payment of 141,000 euros. The usufructuary, a 65-year-old man, will continue to use the property until his death”, reads the advert.
– This is an option with pros and cons for both parties. Normally, the seller (usufructuary) is an elderly person, with no direct descendants to inherit the house and who is looking to supplement a modest pension. For the buyer (bare owner) the house can be an investment for the future, as it would otherwise not be possible to obtain it at such a reasonable price. In some cases, it can be up to 50% or 60% cheaper. The savings are greater the younger the seller, as the buyer will likely have to wait longer to enjoy it.
– In return, the property, if in a sought-after area, will probably appreciate in value over the years. Furthermore, maintenance and service costs are borne by the usufructuary until his or her death, although this depends on the agreement reached between both parties. HEALTH
Doctors are going on a second national strike this Friday to defend their own Framework Statute: {Translation, summary}
– Spanish doctors will stage a second national strike this Friday, demanding a dedicated Medical Statute instead of the government’s proposed general health worker framework. The walkout, called by CESM and SMA unions, follows June’s strike and will include a protest march in Madrid.
– For patients, the impact will be significant: many hospital and primary care appointments risk being delayed or cancelled, while emergency and essential services will remain covered by minimum staffing levels. Doctors argue the real crisis is not a shortage of physicians but poor working conditions driving them away from public healthcare.
– The unions’ demands include shorter shifts, voluntary on-call duties, better rest and retirement conditions, and recognition of medical responsibility with higher pay grades. Until these are addressed, further strikes remain likely, prolonging disruption to patient care. The family of a patient in Seville who died from COVID-19 has been awarded €283,612 in compensation for SAS “malpractice”: {Translation, summary}
– The Administrative Court No. 11 in Seville has ruled that the Andalusian Health Service (SAS) must pay 283,612 euros to the family of a 55-year-old man who died from COVID-19-related bilateral pneumonia. The court found that medical care constituted “malpractice,” as no additional tests were performed nor hospital admission arranged during the early stages of the illness. Initially, the patient attended La Merced Hospital with a fever but no breathing difficulties; a chest X-ray proved inconclusive, and no blood oxygen measurement was recorded.
– He was discharged with paracetamol and advised to return if symptoms worsened. Five days later, he returned severely ill and was transferred to Valme Hospital, where he soon died. SAS contested liability, citing inherent disease risk and possible lack of vaccination, but the court confirmed a direct causal link between inadequate care and death. Compensation is allocated among the widow and two children, with interest from the administrative claim date. The Digital Gulag Is Being Erected Before Your Very Eyes– With Pedro Sanchez Leading The Way:
– At the WEF 2025, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez presented a vision for the digital future that should send a chill down the spine of every free citizen. Framed as a solution to online harms, his proposal is, in reality, a blueprint for a panopticon of digital control, perfectly aligned with the globalist agenda of the World Economic Forum.
– What Sánchez Said: He called for an end to online anonymity, demanding that every social media profile in Europe be linked to a state-issued “European Digital Identity Wallet.” He compared the internet to public streets, arguing that just as one cannot drive without a license plate, one should not post online without a state-verified ID.
– What Sánchez Is Really Saying: He is declaring that the digital public square– the last truly global space for free, unvetted discourse– must be brought under the direct supervision of the state.
– His rhetoric is a masterclass in misdirection: “Fighting misinformation” is code for establishing a verifiable identity for dissent. Under this system, any opinion deemed inconvenient by the authorities can be traced directly back to the citizen who voiced it. “Ending cyber-harassment” is the pretext for ending digital privacy. The principle that one can speak without fear of state retribution is being reclassified as “impunity.” “Pseudonymity” is a Trojan horse. It offers the illusion of a nickname while ensuring that a government database holds the key to your real identity, accessible whenever “public authorities” deem your speech a “crime.” This is not pseudonymity; it is state-mandated identity registration for speech.
– This is the ultimate goal of the WEF’s “Great Reset” and “Digital ID” agenda: not safety, but control. It creates a system where participation in modern society is contingent on accepting a government-issued digital leash. The threat of being “banned or prosecuted” for undefined crimes will inevitably lead to self-censorship, silencing legitimate criticism and neutralizing opposition.
– Sanchez’s second proposal– to “force open the black box of algorithms”– completes the picture. It is not about transparency for users, but about regulatory capture for the state. The goal is for governments to dictate what content is amplified and what is suppressed, shaping public opinion under the guise of managing “the public conversation.”
– This is not the path to a safer internet. It is the path to a sterile, state-managed internet where freedom is traded for the false promise of security. The globalist elite at the WEF are not solving the problems of the digital age; they are exploiting them to build the architecture of control. Meta officially expands facial recognition in Europe to combat identity theft on Facebook, soon to include Instagram: {Translation, summary}
– Meta has officially introduced facial recognition in the EU, including Spain and the UK, to counter scams involving celebrity impersonation on Facebook and, soon, Instagram. Fraudsters increasingly use fake adverts with celebrity images to steal money or personal information. The system compares suspicious account photos with verified public figures and removes false accounts in real time, improving security for all users.
– Average users may also encounter new prompts to use facial recognition when recovering hacked accounts, as Meta expands its video selfie option. This requires the legitimate account holder to submit a real video, preventing AI-generated forgeries and ensuring faster, more reliable account recovery. By combining protection against impersonation and enhanced account recovery, Meta aims to reduce fraud while introducing a new layer of responsibility and verification for everyday users across its platforms. Meta has confirmed it will arrive on Instagram in the “coming months”, but it is not yet active there. {How long before that Meta data base of verified photos with names attached ends up for sale on the dark web? The first buyers will of course be the facial recognition services companies; they would just love to expand their own facial databases. -Ed.}

The Euribor will rise in September after the ECB’s pause with rates but mortgage holders will still save 809 euros a year: {Translation, summary}
– The 12-month Euribor, Spain’s benchmark for variable mortgages, will close September around 2.17%, marking a second monthly rise. The European Central Bank’s decision to pause rate cuts has pushed the index up, though borrowers will still see savings because the Euribor remains below last year’s level. Annual reviews of an average €168,363 mortgage will bring reductions of about €67 monthly, while semi-annual reviews yield smaller gains. The ECB’s rapid cuts, from 4% to 2% in a year, have already cheapened mortgages, sparking competition among banks as the housing market expands. Analysts expect 2025 to record 720,000 home sales and over 480,000 mortgages, the strongest in a decade. Experts see the Euribor stabilising around 2%, with Bankinter projecting 2.15%–2.25% through 2027. Deeper falls would need stronger ECB action in response to global risks, especially US tariffs. Debate within the ECB suggests possible further easing by December, while Federal Reserve moves remain critical. RELIGION
Russell M. Nelson, the oldest-ever president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, died Saturday night at the age of 101:
– Nelson died at his home in Salt Lake City, the church announced. Born in Salt Lake City in 1924, Nelson joined the religion in young adulthood. He was a doctor at the age of 22 and served a two-year Army medical tour of duty during the Korean War before resuming a medical career that included being director of thoracic surgery residency at the University of Utah.
– The next president of the faith, known widely as the Mormon church, was not immediately named, but is expected to be Dallin H. Oaks, per church protocol. He is the next longest-tenured member of the church’s governing Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Photo: Rick Bowmer.
