AXARQUÍA

Work is progressing to increase the use of reclaimed water in the Axarquía: {Translation, summary}
– Regenerated water remains essential for subtropical agriculture in the Axarquía, especially mango and avocado crops, despite a recent hydrological recovery that ended a five-year drought. Current infrastructure, however, cannot serve all 6,600 hectares of crops within the 140-metre contour of Plan Guaro.
– To address this, the Junta de Andalucía is investing €17.6 million in two new storage basins, with capacities of 100,000 and 150,000 cubic metres, connected to irrigation networks via pipelines. The two new storage basins are located as follows:
*Arroyo Capitán area, Cerro de la Encina – capacity of 100,000 cubic metres.
* Benajarafe area – capacity of 150,000 cubic metres.
– These basins are on the right bank of the Vélez River, within the territory covered by the Plan Guaro irrigation scheme in the Axarquía region. They are connected to the local irrigation networks via pipelines of 1.5 km and 2.2 km.
– The project, led by over 2,000 farmers through the Junta Central de Usuarios del Sur del Guaro and executed by Tragsa, aims to increase water availability for summer irrigation, addressing limitations at treatment plants in Rincón de la Victoria, Vélez-Málaga and Peñón del Cuervo. The left bank of Plan Guaro still lacks access, with a proposed 20-kilometre pipeline requiring an estimated €30 million. The new basins are expected to be operational by early 2026, enhancing strategic water management for the region. MALAGA PROVINCE

Volunteers find the first nest of Asian hornets in Málaga: {Translation, summary}
– A large nest of Asian hornets, the first found in Málaga province, has been discovered, reported, and will soon be removed by specialists. The alarm was first raised in summer by biologist Eduardo Sáez after sighting the invasive species near his home. Local residents, beekeepers and environmental agents then carried out extensive searches, culminating in the discovery of the nest hidden ten metres up a pine tree in Alhaurín de la Torre.
– The removal will be conducted by municipal pest control teams with guidance from Galician experts. Volunteers located the nest by tracking hornets’ flight paths from meat baits, even though the search was complicated by access problems on private plots, where permission from landowners was needed. Experts believe it was found in time to prevent queens from dispersing and forming new colonies. Beekeepers, most affected by the species, expressed great relief, hoping the case will mirror Los Barrios, where Andalucía’s first nest was eliminated. DGT’s new intensive control campaign that could cost you a fine from today: {Translation, summary}
{I can’t count how many times I have been almost run over by clowns on their phone while driving, obliviously blowing thru red lights and crosswalks at the bus station. -Ed.}
– From today until 12 October, Málaga will participate in a national traffic safety campaign targeting driver distractions, coordinated by the DGT with the Civil Guard and local police. Roadside checks and 245 traffic cameras will monitor drivers, especially for mobile phone use at the wheel.
– The campaign, part of the European Operation Focus on the Road, will also involve volunteers from the Federation of People with Spinal Cord Injuries (ASPAYM), who will accompany officers in Málaga to raise awareness of the dangers of risky driving and to show the real consequences of road accidents. Studies by the DGT and European Road Safety Observatory reveal that around a quarter of Spanish drivers read messages or check social media while driving, with nearly one-third using phones without hands-free devices. Authorities warn that such distractions greatly increase reaction times and the likelihood of accidents. MALAGA CITY

It’s Not Just In The UK– Malaga puts 2 priests on trial for “hateful” social media posts, prosecutor asks 3 years in prison!: {Translation, summary}
– In the case, which is now awaiting judgment, the Association of Muslims against Islamophobia has also joined as a private prosecutor, being the organisation that filed the initial complaint. The trial took place in a courtroom packed with around fifty people who gathered in support of the two investigated clergymen, Father Custodio Ballester and priest Jesús Calvo.
– In its statement, the Public Prosecutor’s Office referred to a series of comments made by Ballester, published on the website Alerta Digital, and then spread in social media posts, who allegedly described the Muslim population as a “predatory stain” and “termites” during an appearance in a digital media outlet and in a streaming programme about jihadism, and asserted that “dialogue with Islam is impossible,” according to EFE.
– Father Ballester defended himself in court, arguing that when he used those terms, he was referring to radical jihadism. “I was not talking about all Muslims in the world,” he clarified. He considered that the legal proceedings were an attempt to punish freedom of expression: “They are asking for three years in prison — no one has been assaulted, I only spoke, and my statements have never been discriminatory or hateful.”
– The second clergyman, according to the accusation, also allegedly incited hatred by using expressions such as “invading refugees,” claiming they “complicate coexistence,” or suggesting that there was an attempt “to wipe out the white race by filling us with rubbish.” However, the accused priest stated that the articles containing those expressions — which he admitted were his words — had not been written by him but were drawn from telephone conversations. Likewise, Father Calvo said his intention had never been to offend anyone. “I have only wanted to condemn what is illegal; I have spoken against false immigration,” he emphasised in his right to the final word.
– Regarding the director of the digital media outlet Alerta Digital, who faces the most severe requested sentence, the prosecutor argued that the website “displays a clear and consistent editorial line whose central message is to portray immigration, especially from Africa, into Europe in general and Spain in particular, as an invasion aimed at destroying the European people.”
– To that end, the accusation continued, the publication identified refugees, asylum seekers and immigrants — especially Muslims — “as criminals or potential offenders, parasites of the system and unworthy of residing in Europe.” It was further alleged that the intention behind such content was “to sow a sense of insecurity that would foster animosity and hostility towards this group,” using various strategies to achieve that goal.
– These accusations were categorically denied by the director, who stated that the articles cited in the case represented only a very small fraction of the millions published and that they were never intended to attack Muslims. “They were reports on current events, with political criticism and free thought,” he stressed.
– In an unprecedented gesture, more than a hundred magistrates, judges and jurists have signed and delivered to the court a public manifesto in defence of the priest Custodio Ballester Bielsa– “They are part of the legitimate exercise of freedom of expression, protected by European jurisprudence”
Added to this wave of support is the action of the Christian Lawyers association, which has presented to the Prosecutor’s Office more than 30,000 signatures of citizens protesting against what they consider a judicial outrage against the Father Custos and the director of AD, Armando Robles.

Goodbye to horse-drawn carriages– Another step towards making Malaga just another “generic” European city: {Translation, summary}
– The Málaga Town Council has officially ended horse-drawn carriage tourism in the city, bringing forward the closure initially planned for 2035. Mayor Francisco De la Torre cited animal welfare and safety as the primary reason, while highlighting that Málaga now offers many sustainable ways to explore the city, with walking the preferred option. The decision affects 25 remaining licences, whose holders have each received €125,380.48 in compensation, continuing a process that has already reimbursed 30 licences since 2016, totaling over €4 million. The fate of the horses remains uncertain; they may be sold, transferred to other cities, or in some cases sent to slaughter. Coachmen may still use their animals and carriages for private events if properly insured. The city has also removed reserved carriage parking in central areas, replacing some with motorcycle spaces. After this measure, horse-drawn carriages operate only in Marbella, Mijas and Fuengirola.
– Owners say that the sale of some of these horses is unfeasible and they cannot assume the cost of maintaining them– “They talk about animal welfare but they send them to the slaughterhouse”. TORROX

Torrox Water– Are late night pressure cuts back?:
– I have gotten reports from several readers that in Torrox & Torrox Costa the water pressure at the tap gets cut to about 25% after 11pm, and returns to normal by 7am. Personally, I now find the late night water pressure too low to take an evening shower, it just dribbles out of the showerhead! The town is supposed to announce any such actions, but I couldn’t find any info. If anyone has a link to a water pressure cut announcement, please send it in. -Ed.

EUROPE

EU’s von der Leyen confronts new no-confidence challenges:
– European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen faced bids to remove her for the second time in three months when hard-right and left groups in the European Parliament presented no-confidence motions on Monday.
– Although the motions of censure have almost no chance of reaching the two-thirds majority required to unseat von der Leyen in votes on Thursday, they could expose more general disquiet over her leadership and destabilise the EU assembly, whose backing is required to pass legislation.
– The two censure motions differ, the right’s complaining about “misguided” green policies and a failure to address illegal migration, while the left’s highlights the EU’s inaction over Gaza.
– However, both sides agree that von der Leyen accepted an unbalanced tariff deal with the United States and that the Commission’s proposed EU-Mercosur trade deal is a threat to farmers and the environment. {The EU-Mercosur trade deal is a comprehensive trade agreement between the European Union (EU) and the Mercosur bloc, which includes Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. It is one of the largest free trade agreements negotiated by the EU and is intended to boost trade, investment, and economic cooperation between the two regions.} Full article: https://www.reuters.com/world/eus-von-der-leyen-confronts-fresh-no-confidence-challenges-2025-10-06/

Tennis News- Medvedev stops Davidovich in Shanghai and complicates his ATP Finals chances: {Translation, summary}
– Alejandro Davidovich has once again stumbled at the same hurdle on his way to the ATP Finals in Turin. The Malaga native was eliminated on Monday from the Shanghai Masters 1000 after losing 6-3, 7-6(5) to Daniil Medvedev, just eight days after the Russian also knocked him out in the round of 16 at the Beijing Open 500.
– The result leaves the Spanish tennis player in sixteenth position in the Race 2025, 1,230 points behind Lorenzo Musetti, who currently occupies eighth place, the last provisional qualifying spot for the Masters event. The Italian is still in contention in the Chinese tournament, which could increase the gap in the rankings. GASTRONOMIA

Using Ants To Make Yogurt: {Translation, summary}
– A traditional yogurt recipe from the Balkans and Turkey using ants has been revived in a Danish study, highlighting how insects can drive fermentation. Researchers found that wood ants carry lactic and acetic bacteria, while their formic acid and enzymes aid milk coagulation and flavour development.
– The study revealed that only live ants produce the appropriate microbial community for yogurt, though safety concerns exist due to potential parasites and harmful bacteria. The team explored the method by placing four ants in warm milk in an anthill overnight, producing a slightly acidic, herbal-tasting, early-stage yogurt. Co-author Sevgi Mutlu Sirakova’s village in Bulgaria provided insight into the traditional practice. To demonstrate modern culinary applications, researchers partnered with Copenhagen’s two-Michelin-star restaurant Alchemist, creating innovative dishes such as ant-shaped ice cream sandwiches, subtly spiced cheeses, and clarified milk cocktails, all inspired by the ant-based yogurt. This work combines traditional knowledge, microbial science, and contemporary gastronomy. Putting a security alarm sticker at home without having contracted the service can be very expensive– The law provides for heavy penalties and even jail time for misleading advertising: {Translation, summary}
– Homeowners in Spain sometimes display the logos and emblems of professional security companies without having contracted any service, aiming to deter burglars or squatters. However, this practice is illegal under Law 5/2014 on Private Security, which forbids simulating private security services without authorisation. Article 44 of the Trademark Law imposes a minimum compensation of €600 per day for misuse of a registered trademark. Article 274 of the Penal Code classifies unauthorised use of official signs as a crime, punishable with fines or up to three years’ imprisonment. Misleading signage may also constitute unfair competition, potentially carrying six months to two years in prison.
– Authorities warn that displaying security logos without a contract can result in civil, financial, and criminal penalties. To avoid these risks, homeowners should only use emblems for services they have legitimately contracted, as unauthorised use can be far costlier than hiring professional security. The last Spaniards in the Palestine Aid flotilla leave Israel, except for the one detained for biting a female official: {Translation, summary}
– Twenty-seven Spaniards from the Global Sumud Flotilla have departed Israel for Spain, following their detention while attempting to reach the Gaza Strip. One Spanish activist remains in custody until Wednesday after allegedly biting a prison officer at Ktziot during a medical check. Israeli authorities reported the incident, confirming minor injuries to the officer. Initially, 49 Spaniards were aboard the flotilla; 21 had already returned to Spain on Sunday after deportation. The Spanish Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, had stated that the remaining detainees would return as planned. The Global Sumud Flotilla confirmed that the plane carrying these Spaniards, along with other nationals, is now in Athens and is expected to arrive at Madrid’s Barajas Airport shortly after midnight on Tuesday. The new flotilla, with seven Spaniards on board, is now 350 kilometres from Gaza: {Translation}
– The Freedom Flotilla, with seven Spaniards on board and sailing for more than a week towards the Gaza Strip, is now approximately 190 nautical miles (around 350 kilometres) from the Palestinian enclave’s coast, in a new challenge to the blockade maintained by Israel, which last week led to the interception of another group of around 40 ships.
– This new flotilla consists of eight sailing vessels that departed on 27 September from Catania, and the Conscience, a ship previously attacked in early May in international waters off Malta. After undergoing repairs, it set sail from Otranto port on 30 September. The tracking platform activated by this campaign places all the vessels north of Egypt, near the city of Alexandria. Sources from the organisation consulted by Europa Press indicate that, at the current pace, they could reach the considered risk zone in two to three days.
– Israeli authorities have warned that they will halt any attempt to enter an “active combat zone” and will detain all crew aiming to reach Gaza, as they did last week with more than 400 activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla. In fact, José Lozano Maneiro, a member of the Rumbo a Gaza initiative on board the Conscience, reported seeing several Israeli surveillance drones above the ships on Saturday. “They have us perfectly located,” he said. The vessel carries 82 participants and ten crew, including 21 journalists and 21 medical personnel, alongside food and medicines. Lozano believes the flotilla will also likely be intercepted, and drills are underway to prepare for boarding, to demonstrate they are “peaceful” and to avoid giving Israel any excuse for violence.
– Meanwhile, Rumbo a Gaza denied claims by Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares that the Ministry had no record of Spaniards on board, stating that an email sent on 30 September listed all passengers and their passports.
