SPAIN
The government is preparing to increase contributions for self-employed workers by between €11 and €206 per month next year: {Translation, summary}
– The Spanish Government has proposed new Social Security contribution brackets for self employed workers that would raise monthly payments in 2026 by between 11 and 206 euros, depending on income. Increases would continue in 2027 and 2028 as part of the pension reform launched by former minister José Luis Escrivá, with contributions rising further by up to 619 euros per month by 2028. The lowest earning 40 percent of self employed workers, those below 1,166 euros a month, would face limited rises of up to 17 euros.
– The plan includes 15 income brackets and aims for contributions to reflect real earnings by 2032, both to strengthen the pension system and to improve future pensions for the self employed. The proposal also raises the flat rate for new self employed workers and improves access to cessation of activity benefits. However, the ATA, the association of self employed workers that is part of the main employers’ organisation CEOE, strongly rejects the plan, calling it an excessive financial burden.
– The document is not final and is being debated among the social partners. When the time comes, the Government will have to process the measure by means of the royal decree law, so it would need a parliamentary majority which it has not been able to count on recently in labour matters, such as the reduction of working hours.

Judge Peinado extends the investigation into Begoña Gómez until mid-April: {Translation, summary}
– Judge Juan Carlos Peinado {pic} has extended the investigation into Begoña Gómez, wife of Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez, for another six months from 16 October due to unfinished investigative work. The case, opened in April 2024, currently includes accusations of five offences: influence peddling, embezzlement, private corruption, misappropriation and unlawful professional practice.
– One line of inquiry focuses on the award of public contracts to businessman Juan Carlos Barrabés, a friend of Gómez, who presented recommendation letters from her in bids to Red.es. The judge suspects these may have improperly influenced procurement decisions. Another line concerns software patented by Gómez but funded by companies for university use, which she later offered commercially.
– Investigators also examine whether she performed professional functions without proper qualification. In addition, presidency adviser Cristina Álvarez is being investigated for allegedly working on Gómez’s private university projects while paid by public funds, which could amount to embezzlement and influence peddling. Former Transport Minister José Luis Ábalos has been left without a lawyer, who resigned on Monday in response to Ábalos’ lack of cooperation: {Translation, summary}
– Former Spanish minister José Luis Ábalos {pic} has lost his lawyer days before testifying again before Supreme Court judge Leopoldo Puente in the corruption investigation linked to former adviser Koldo García. His lawyer, José Aníbal Álvarez, resigned after learning from the press that Ábalos had met other lawyers behind his back. Their disagreements over the defence strategy had also intensified, as Álvarez had advised Ábalos to resign his parliamentary seat to avoid legal privilege and negotiate a deal with prosecutors, neither of which Ábalos accepted.
– A postponement of Wednesday’s hearing is now likely while Ábalos seeks new legal representation. The situation mirrors that of Koldo García, whose lawyer also resigned shortly before a previous hearing. Judge Puente has summoned Ábalos for a fourth time following a Guardia Civil report alleging 95,437 euros in undeclared income and cash payments from the PSOE. The judge suspects Ábalos and García may have used opaque methods to manage irregular funds. Only 3% of Andalusians drive an electric car, support for climate change measures drops 8%: {Translation, summary}
– The Just Transition Observatory (OTJ) has presented the results of its Fourth study on citizens’ perception of the ecological transition, focused this time on Andalusia. The report reveals that 61% of the Andalusian population believes that the fight against climate change must continue to be a priority, although the data exposes a drop of eight points compared to 2022.
– The private car use continues to be the majority (52%), and only 3% drive an electric vehicle although their positive perception grows (58%). {No mention of what the remaining 45%.} The main barriers remain price, range and lack of charging points. MALAGA PROVINCE
Online video games, the new ‘playground’ of sexual predators in Malaga– “We have to inspect children’s devices”: {Translation, summary}
– The Cybercrime Group of the National Police in Málaga warns of the growing risk children face on online gaming platforms, which investigators describe as breeding grounds for paedophiles. Officers report an increase in grooming cases in which adults pose as young players to gain the trust of minors and obtain sexual images.
– Victims are increasingly younger, some as young as six. While attempts to arrange physical meetings are less common, online extortion is widespread. Predators often lure children with in game rewards, such as virtual coins or gems, before pressuring them to send sexual content. Once images are obtained, the abusers use blackmail to force further material. Platforms such as Roblox, Snapchat and Omegle are frequently linked to reports. Police warn that minors often lie about their age online and urge parents to supervise internet use closely, stressing that online safety must be taught just as any other basic skill. TORROX
The European funds train has passed Torrox by while nearby towns get millions: {Translation}
– As in the famous Berlanga film “¡Bienvenido, Mister Marshall!” {A 1953 Spanish comedy, considered one of the masterpieces of Spanish cinema.}, the mayor and his team have been left watching as the opportunity slipped away, leaving behind a bitter sense of disappointment among the local residents. Once again, the biggest losers are the people of Torrox, who see nearby municipalities like Vélez-Málaga, Rincón de la Victoria, or Nerja receiving millions in investments, while their own town remains off the list.
– The reason? According to the Socialist opposition PSOE, the right-wing PP controlled Torrox Town Hall was excluded from the call for funding because it failed to present a sufficiently prepared project to achieve the minimum score of 50 points required to access European aid.
***”Not a single euro from Europe”***
– Following the announcement of the decision, the local PSOE has described the news as an “economic blow” and a “failure of management” for the government of Óscar Medina (PP), which – they emphasise – has failed to secure a single euro in European funds, despite having had a specific department for this purpose for two years and with “the best-paid government in the history” of the town.
– Meanwhile, Vélez-Málaga has secured €12 million, and both Rincón de la Victoria and Nerja have obtained nearly €9 million each for sustainable urban development projects.
***”The problem is not Europe, but Torrox”***
– Socialist spokesperson Mari Nieves Ramírez has lamented that, even at a time when Andalucía and Málaga are receiving more European resources than ever, Torrox has been unable to benefit from these funds. “Not even in this highly favourable context, with more funds than ever flowing into the province, has Torrox been able to secure a single euro. This is a clear demonstration of the lack of management, work, and preparation by Óscar Medina’s government team,” said Ramírez.
– The councillor insisted that this was not a political issue, recalling that other municipalities also governed by the PP – like Nerja or Rincón de la Victoria – have successfully presented solid projects. “Blaming other administrations won’t do. The problem is not with European funds, it lies in the lack of effort and planning in Torrox,” she added.
***A department with no results***
– Socialist councillor Javier Villena reminded that the municipal official responsible for European Funds earns an annual salary of €45,000, “without any tangible results for the town after two years.” “We are faced with a clear example of poor management. While other town halls work with ambitious projects and a forward-thinking vision, the local government continues to improvise, letting opportunities slip by that could improve the quality of life for our residents,” Villena said.
– The Socialist group has demanded a clear and public explanation from the mayor about the lack of results and called for an immediate reorientation of the funds acquisition strategy. “Torrox cannot keep missing the European train. Every euro we let slip away means fewer investments, less employment, and fewer services for our citizens,” concluded the councillor.
– Perhaps, and returning to the beginning, just like in ¡Bienvenido, Mister Marshall!, after the frustration felt by the people of Torrox, Óscar Medina should say what the mayor (Pepe Isbert) said in the film: “As your mayor, I owe you an explanation, and that explanation I owe you, I will pay.” Source, Spanish: https://axarquia-news.es/el-sueno-de-los-fondos-europeos-se-desvanece-en-torrox/
FRIGILIANA
Green group flags issues after reptiles found dead in Frigiliana irrigation channel:
– The Malaga-based environmental group, Gabinete de Estudios de la Naturaleza de la Axarquía (GENA)-Ecologistas en Acción, as a member of the governing board of the Sierras Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama natural park, has reported to the Andalusian regional government the “numerous irregularities” in the area known as Acequia de Lizar. Located on the banks of the Higuerón river in Frigiliana in the east of the province, they claim that the irregularities are having “catastrophic results” for the amphibians and reptiles trapped in the area which forms part of the protected natural park area shared by Malaga and Granada provinces.
– The environmentalists argue that the current design turns the ditch into “a lethal trap”, so that “numerous specimens of reptile and amphibian species fall into it and do not manage to get out”, causing massive and continuous mortality in species such as the red-tailed lizard (of special interest), the Colilarga lizard (of special interest), the Betic lizard (catalogued as vulnerable), the horseshoe snake (vulnerable), the snub-nosed viper (vulnerable), the Betic midwife toad (in danger of extinction). “The presence of species such as the Betic midwife toad, an Andalusian native species catalogued as endangered, makes this situation an absolute priority from a legal and conservation point of view,” Yus said.
– Although environmentalists and experts have noted that there are some escape devices (rudimentary ramps and few plastic screens), “their number and design are totally insufficient”. They explain that “the ramps occupy only a tiny fraction of the width of the ditch and do not adequately fulfil their function. Only the mesh screens have shown some effectiveness, although their distribution along the length of the ditch can be described as anecdotal”. VÉLEZ-MÁLAGA
Vélez-Málaga Town Council reports a wave of arson attacks in shanty town district at Las Casillas de la Vía: {Translation}
– The Vélez-Málaga City Council has issued an official statement after three fires broke out in less than 72 hours in the Las Casillas de la Vía area of Torre del Mar. Evidence suggests that the fires were started deliberately, creating a serious risk to local residents and causing significant environmental damage.
– On the night of October 9, another fire broke out in Las Casillas de la Vía, the third in just three days, prompting the Vélez-Málaga City Council to issue an official statement strongly condemning these acts and warning that it will not tolerate vandalism that endangers people’s lives or the natural environment.
– The Provincial Fire Department responded on a large scale, with a demonstration of three vehicles and the use of more than 60,000 litres of water. In addition, the rapid spread of the flames led to the preventive evacuation of nearby homes.
– The council emphasizes its commitment to public safety and environmental protection, and assures that it is working to find a definitive solution to the situation in the shanty town of Las Casillas, where many of the risk factors are concentrated. The City Council has asked for the cooperation of residents in identifying those responsible and has reiterated that it will continue to strengthen surveillance and preventive measures in the area. He’s Back: Macron Appoints Lecornu as French Prime Minister…Again:
– France’s last prime minister Sebastian Lecornu {pic} was reappointed as prime minister by President Emmanuel Macron on Friday night, following hours of discussion in the Elysée Palace. The failed—and now returned—politician resigned from his office on Monday just hours after the cabinet was revealed. He is now back as the head of the government.
– “I accept, out of duty, the mission entrusted to me by the President of the Republic to do everything to give France a budget for the end of the year and to respond to the problems of the daily lives of our compatriots,” wrote Lecornu just minutes after his appointment on X. Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy will go to prison on October 21 for financing Libya in his 2007 campaign:
– The former French president Nicolas Sarkozy has been ordered to go to jail in Paris next week after a court last month sentenced him to five years in prison for criminal conspiracy over a scheme to obtain election campaign funds from the regime of the late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi.
– Sarkozy, who was the rightwing president of France between 2007 and 2012, was summoned to meet state prosecutors on Monday. They told him he must present himself at the entrance of La Santé prison in the south of Paris on 21 October to begin his sentence.
– The 70-year-old will be the first French postwar leader and the first former head of a European Union country to go to jail. He had already become the first former French head of state forced to wear an electronic tag after being convicted in a separate case of corruption and influence peddling over illegal attempts to secure favours from a judge. In that case, he was given a one-year jail term but was able to serve it with an electronic tag worn around the ankle. He wore the tag for three months before being granted conditional release. MIDDLE EAST
Living Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners are freed as part of Gaza ceasefire:
– All 20 living hostages held by Hamas and hundreds of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel walked free Monday as part of a ceasefire pausing two years of war that decimated the Gaza Strip and killed tens of thousands of Palestinians.
– The Israeli military said Monday it was escorting into Israel the bodies of four deceased captives who had been held by Hamas in Gaza. It was not immediately clear when the remaining 24 deceased captives would be handed over by Hamas. Israel said it freed more than 1,900 Palestinian prisoners as part of the Gaza ceasefire deal.
– Speaking to parliament, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared he was “committed to this peace,” raising hopes that the ruinous war, which triggered other conflicts in the Middle East, might come to an end. But fundamental questions remain over when and how, whether Hamas will disarm and who will govern Gaza. THE REST OF THE STORY
The Other Genocide…Christian Genocide in Africa– 30+ Christians Beheaded in New Mozambique Attacks as Radical Islamic Terrorism Runs Rampant in Parts of Africa:
– More than 30 Christians have been beheaded at the hands of Islamic State terrorists in Mozambique, according to a report.
– The Islamic State Mozambique Province, or ISMP, announced that they destroyed at least seven churches, committed acts of arson against Christians and village civilians, and shot and beheaded more than two dozen people in the Cabo Delgado and Nampula provinces in the northern area of Mozambique. The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) screen-captured, translated, and shared the terrorists’ report on their website, which included 20 photos of the brutal attacks on Christians. According to the organization, the Islamic State of Mozambique is reigning through terror in the region.
– ISMP also claimed responsibility for the beheading of two Christians on September 25. The ISMP later took responsibility for a September 26 attack, which left a Christian local shot and killed. Four Christians were then beheaded in the town of Macomia days later. The group also posted images of homes and churches burned to the ground in Nacocha, Nacussa, Minhanha, and Nakioto villages.
– To counter the attacks in local villages, Mozambique renewed an alliance with Rwanda in late August. In the Status of Force Agreement, Rwanda’s Defense Force agreed to send troops into Cabo Delgado.
– As Christian Broadcasting Network News (CBN) has reported, violent attacks began in Cabo Delgado Province in 2017. Since then, more than 6,000 people have been killed and thousands more have been displaced. Open Doors’ World Watch List 2025 [pic] ranks Mozambique as the 37th most difficult country to be a Christian. The annual reports list the top 50 countries where Christians face the most extreme persecution.
– The province of Cabo Delgado is the only area in Mozambique with a majority Muslim population. The nation as a whole is predominantly Christian, with evangelical and Pentecostal Christians making up a significant portion, a State Department report outlined.
– CBN’s Billy Hallowell and Raj Nair point out that the plight of Mozambican Christians is largely ignored in the Western world. “It is hard to process the fact that in 2025 you have people around the world who are terrorists who are beheading Christians. It is the most horrific thing imaginable,” Hallowell commented. “Can you imagine if the headline [read] the IDF beheads 30 Palestinians,” Nair responded. “We would be talking about the biggest news story since 9/11.” He noted that the major media outlets have failed to report on the “genocide happening against Christians” in multiple countries in Africa. “The world does not care,” he added.
