Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

SPAIN
US insists that Spain must commit to 5% in military spending– “There are no exceptions or caveats”: {Translation, summary}
– The United States ambassador to NATO, Matthew Whitaker, has warned that all NATO members, including Spain, must meet the defence spending target of 5 percent of GDP agreed at the recent summit in The Hague. He stressed that there are no exceptions and that each of the thirty two allies is bound by Article 3 of the NATO Treaty to maintain sufficient defence investment. Whitaker said Washington expects 3.5 percent of GDP to be spent on direct military capabilities.
– He declined to comment on United States president Donald Trump’s recent threat to expel Spain from NATO over insufficient defence spending, a measure not foreseen in the Alliance’s founding treaty. Trump had criticised Spain but later said it was doing a fantastic job. Spain argues it can meet NATO capability goals by spending 2.1 percent of GDP, citing an interpretative letter by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. However, allied sources say Spain’s stance is not well received within NATO. Judge Orders José Luis Ábalos to Testify with Lawyer He Tried to Dismiss: {Translation, summary}
– Former Spanish minister José Luis Ábalos {pic} must testify before the Supreme Court on Wednesday with his current lawyer, José Aníbal, despite attempting to dismiss him two days earlier. Judge Leopoldo Puente ruled that the timing of the dismissal could be considered an abuse of law and therefore rejected it. Ábalos claimed an irreversible deterioration in his relationship with Aníbal, with whom he has had continuous disagreements for months, particularly over whether to negotiate a deal with the Public Prosecutor and whether Ábalos should resign his parliamentary seat.
– The summons comes after a fresh report by the Civil Guard’s Central Operative Unit revealed suspicious irregular income linked to Ábalos and his former aide Koldo García. Investigators found at least ninety five thousand euros in unexplained expenses allegedly covered by García, as well as unrecorded cash payments. After Ábalos testifies, the court may consider precautionary measures, including possible provisional imprisonment depending on developments in the case. The government acknowledges that it plans to regularize one million immigrants before the general election: {Translation, summary}
– The Sánchez Government’s plan to regularise nearly one million immigrants before the 2027 general elections appears timed primarily to secure political advantage rather than tackle migration issues effectively. By expediting the new Foreigners’ Regulations and shortening residence requirements, the Government creates a fast track to nationality and voting rights for hundreds of thousands of immigrants, framing it as integration while its main effect is electoral.
– The lack of transparency and consensus in implementing these reforms, criticised by the Popular Party and NGOs, highlights the politically motivated nature of the process. This strategy is reinforced by the 336 per cent surge in naturalisations granted by Royal Decree since 2020, a mechanism that bypasses normal residency requirements and allows the PSOE to increase its potential voter base rapidly. Overall, these measures prioritise political calculation over genuine integration or careful social policy, using immigration and citizenship procedures as instruments to influence future elections. Spain’s Water Reserves Fall for 20th Week, With Significant Declines in Andalucía: {Translation, summary}
– Spain’s water reserves have fallen for the twentieth week in a row and now stand at 53.08 percent of total capacity. Despite heavy rainfall from the isolated high level depression Alice in the eastern Mediterranean, most reservoir basins continue to lose water. The only basins to record slight increases were Júcar and Segura. The Ministry of Ecological Transition notes that the current national reservoir level is still higher than last year and above the average of the last decade.
– In Andalucía, however, the situation has worsened this week. All Andalusian basins have recorded new drops. The Mediterranean Andalucía basin, which supplies parts of Málaga, Granada and Almería, has fallen by 0.6 percent. The Guadalquivir basin, the most important in Andalucía and vital for agriculture and urban supply across the region, has dropped by 0.5 percent. Guadalete-Barbate, which affects Cádiz province, has fallen by 0.3 percent. The trend confirms growing concern over water scarcity ahead of the agricultural season. COÍN
The 7-year-old daughter of the couple found dead in Coín walked 3km to alert a neighbour: {Translation, summary}
– A couple in Coín, Málaga, were discovered dead under mysterious circumstances in their remote property, leaving two daughters, aged seven and 14. It was the younger child who walked more than three kilometres along dirt tracks to alert a neighbour, who then notified the emergency services.
– Emergency teams could only confirm the deaths upon arrival, while the younger child was presumably handed to relatives; the whereabouts of the older daughter remain uncertain. The Civil Guard has maintained strict silence regarding the identities of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
– Sources close to the family revealed they had lived in a modest, electricity-free dwelling {pic} in the Arroyo de las Piedras area for at least a year. Two vans, one bearing the name of a painting company, were found parked near the property. The case is now under investigation by the Civil Guard, who are awaiting autopsy results at the Institute of Legal Medicine in Málaga to determine the causes of death.

GRANADA
The struggle of some residents of Granada against the construction of a wind farm that “devastates” a natural environment: {Translation, summary}
– A growing environmental and social conflict is unfolding in Villamena, in Granada’s Valle de Lecrín, where residents accuse energy firm Grupo Cuerva of exceeding construction limits during the development of the Barranco del Agua I wind farm. Local campaigners say the project has already affected nearly triple the land authorised by the Junta de Andalucía, transforming communal mountain land traditionally used for grazing into a large industrial site with blast works, wide roads and concrete platforms. According to the Unified Environmental Authorization (AAU), issued by the Junta de Andalucía, the work was to occupy about 54,328 m², including platforms and paths for the five wind turbines. However, the measurements of the platform indicate that more than 140,000 m² have already been intervened, almost triple, including roads more than 12 meters wide and ravines paved for the passage of trucks.
– Beyond landscape damage, residents and farmers report direct local consequences: loss of pasture, blocked livestock routes and restricted access to communal land used for generations. Environmental experts warn of wider ecological risks. The site lies just 4 kilometres from the protected Padul Lagoon and sits on a main bird migration corridor, threatening fragile ecosystems already under pressure.
– Local groups have filed complaints to Seprona, the Civil Guard and the regional government, but responses have been slow. Many residents fear the area is becoming a “territory of sacrifice” for large-scale renewable projects, with decisions made without local consultation. While Grupo Cuerva denies any wrongdoing, mistrust is growing amid concerns that economic interests are being placed above environmental care and rural livelihoods. The photo is of another “sister-windfarm” that is nearby, Parque Eólico Barranco del Agua II, Alhendín, Granada, Andalucía.

Terrified Gazans fear Hamas won’t disarm as terrorists massacre Palestinians: ‘Punishing families’ and killing suspected Israeli sympathizers in the streets:
– The war in Gaza has stopped — but the killing hasn’t. Palestinians are scared for their lives as many fear Hamas has no plans to saddle up for “phase two” of President Trump’s peace deal and will continue to slaughter civilians who stand up against the terror group. “From the first moment the Israeli planes disappeared from the sky, Hamas began punishing the families,” one Gazan activist in the war-torn land told The Post.
– Masked Hamas gunmen executed eight people on a busy street in Gaza City just one day after a cease-fire went into effect. “They accused people of collaborating with Israel — but that’s not true. They just opposed Hamas during the war.”
– Activist Amin Abed — who fled Gaza after Hamas tortured and nearly beat him to death over his opposition to the Oct. 7, 2023 terror attack on Israel — said the terror group was using the executions as a show of force and has no intentions of relinquishing power or giving up its weapons. “Hamas is much stronger than any family or civilian group,” Abed said. “They can crush anyone who stands against them. What we’re seeing now is Hamas waging a war against its own people.
– He added that most Gazans oppose Hamas and long for peace — but feel powerless. “We couldn’t stop Oct. 7, and we can’t stop Hamas now,” he said. “The world needs to understand that Gazans are not Hamas. We want peace, not war. But every time we speak out, Hamas kills us first. “We see Hamas restoring its full strength. They’re everywhere again — as police, as militia, as security,” he said. “We are deeply concerned about the return of Hamas to power and the continuation of the violence under Hamas in Gaza and exposing us again to the same injustice that we experienced for the last 17 years.”
– If Hamas remains in power, Abed warned that the “cycle of violence between Israel and Hamas will emerge again sometime soon.” “We are afraid that the bloody war would be back and Hamas will wage another Oct. 7 attack,” he said. “We believe the world will forget about us, and Hamas will rule us with an iron fist for many more years.”
– The source in Gaza predicted Hamas would next try to convince Trump and his allies that only the group can maintain “security and stability” in Gaza as a strategy to stay in power.
“Trump and Netanyahu must pressure Hamas and its backers — Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey — to truly implement the terms of the peace deal,” the activist said. “If Hamas keeps even some weapons, it means they keep everything. They’ll never leave Gaza.”
– While some analysts have speculated that a civil war could break out among the factions in Gaza, the activist in Gaza said it would not be possible — because Hamas is simply too powerful. Risking his life by speaking to The Post from Gaza, his over-arching message to the world was simple — and desperate. “Don’t leave us to Hamas again.”
– The domestic bloodshed comes as Trump on Tuesday said phase two of the peace agreement — which calls for the disarmament of Hamas and establishment of a new governing body — had begun. “… A big burden has been lifted, but the job IS NOT DONE,” Trump posted to Truth Social on Tuesday, referencing the return of the living Israelis Hamas took hostage on Oct. 7, 2023. “… Phase Two begins right NOW!!!”
– Despite Trump’s assurances, the activist and other anti-Hamas Gazans with whom The Post spoke Tuesday warned that the terror group is showing no willingness to move ahead with the next step of the peace plan. “Hamas is showing off its weapons, its strength,” the source in Gaza said. “They’re saying, ‘We are back — stronger than ever.’”

TECH
Microsoft Ends Support for Windows 10 As Of Tuesday, 14Oct25:
– The time has come for all the stragglers still using Windows 10 to either upgrade to Windows 11, if their device is compatible, or, extend your Windows 10 for 1 year of Security Updates by enrolling in the Microsoft Extended Security updates program (ESU).
– Windows 10 users in the European Economic Area (EEA) are allowed to enroll in the ESU program for free, with no OneDrive or Rewards strings attached. Go to Settings > Windows Updates and look for the ESU notice.
– Computers that have their location set outside the EEA, including the UK, are not eligible for the free extension. And unfortunately you cannot simply change your location in Settings to Spain and then enroll in the ESU. You’ll need to get help from an advanced user who knows how to use the Windows Regedit Tool to change the location for you. Note, there are reports of this location changing fix failing in some cases.
– For power users, you can make some registry changes to accomplish this task, in most cases, see pic. Read this thread for detailed instructions and info updates: [ https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/5578114/i-live-in-europe-but-i-dont-see-the-free-esu-enrol ]

– Some Spanish users are still not receiving their ESU notices in the Updates window, just this message, “Enrolment for Windows 10 Extended Security Updates will be available soon”. This is what you will see when the ESU becomes available on your device {pic}. Make sure up have all your regular system updates installed, as missing updates can prevent you from getting the ESU notice.

– If you computer was originally sold as a Win 7 or Win 8 device, and then later upgraded to Win 10, it will probably be rejected from the ESU enrolment plan.

FINANCIAL
Self-employed workers (autónomos) will be able to deduct VAT on electricity, water, and gas at home: {Translation, summary}
– The Supreme Court of Spain has ruled that self employed workers who carry out their professional activity from their own homes may deduct a proportional part of VAT from household utility bills, such as electricity, water, gas and internet, provided they can prove that part of the home is used exclusively for work. Until now, the Tax Agency allowed a similar deduction for Income Tax but systematically rejected it for VAT, a contradiction the court has now corrected. The decision arose from the case of a legal services firm that attended clients on the ground floor of the owner’s two storey home. Although the claim was rejected by both the Tax Office and the High Court of Justice of Andalucía, the Supreme Court overturned those rulings. Judge Sandra María González de Lara ordered a new tax assessment including the deduction. The ruling sets legal precedent and offers financial relief for home based professionals.
