Antonio Sanz makes his debut this week in the Andalusian Parliament as Minister of Health with a general debate on the sector: {Translation, summary}
– The Andalusian Parliament will hold a general debate on the state of public healthcare on 22 October, marking the first appearance of Antonio Sanz as Health Minister. The session begins with the total review of the Heritage Law project, followed by the healthcare debate, which will dominate the rest of the day. Sanz will open with a twenty-minute address, after which parliamentary groups will respond in order of representation. The Government Council and the parliamentary groups will have additional speaking turns, and the day will conclude with a one-hour period for presenting and voting on resolution proposals.
– The debate follows the recent crisis in the breast cancer early detection programme, which led to the resignation of former Health Minister Rocío Hernández and a government reshuffle.
– The Plenary will continue on 23 October focused on mental health and healthcare transparency, oral questions to President Juanma Moreno, and the debate of four non-legislative motions addressing vocational training, privatisation, regional infrastructure, and water management.

MALAGA CITY
Mutant Rats Invade Malaga: {Translation, summary}
– Málaga is confronting a shocking surge in rat infestations, with reports of the resilient rodents invading parks, gardens, abandoned lots, building entrances, and even private homes across districts including Santa Paula, La Malagueta and Girón-Delicias. Residents warn the problem is escalating at an alarming pace.
– Sergio Monge, president of the National Association of Environmental Health Companies (ANECPLA), warns that these “next-generation sewer rats” are no ordinary pests. Thanks to a genetic mutation, many have become immune to traditional anticoagulant rodenticides, rendering standard control measures increasingly ineffective. Coupled with strict new European regulations limiting rodenticide use, the city faces a growing public health threat. With diseases such as leptospirosis, hantavirus and toxoplasmosis at stake, Málaga’s mutant rat crisis is a clear and present danger. Thieves steal priceless jewels from Paris’ Louvre in brazen daylight heist:
– Thieves broke into Paris’ Louvre museum on Sunday, using a crane and smashing an upstairs window and stealing priceless jewellery from an area that houses the French crown jewels before escaping on motorbikes, the French government said.
The robbery is likely to raise awkward questions about security at the museum, where officials had already sounded the alarm about lack of investment at a world-famous site, home to artworks such as the Mona Lisa, that welcomed 8.7 million visitors in 2024.
– The thieves struck at about 9.30 a.m. (0730 GMT) when the museum had already opened its doors to the public, and entered the Galerie d’Apollon building, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.
– The robbery took around four minutes, Culture Minister Rachida Dati told TF1, and was carried out by professionals.
“We saw some footage: they don’t target people, they enter calmly in four minutes, smash display cases, take their loot, and leave. No violence, very professional,” Dati said on TF1.
She said one piece of jewellery had been recovered outside the museum, apparently dropped as the thieves made their escape. Dati declined to say what the item was, but newspaper Le Parisien said it was believed to be the crown of Napoleon III’s wife, Empress Eugénie. The item was broken, the newspaper said. Portugal’s parliament approves far-right party’s bill to ban face veils:
– Portugal’s parliament approved on Friday a bill to ban face veils used for “gender or religious motives” in most public spaces that was proposed by the far-right Chega party and effectively targets burqas and niqabs worn by Muslim women.
Under the bill, proposed fines for wearing face veils in public would range between 200 euros and 4,000 euros ($234 to $4,671). Forcing someone to wear one would be punishable with prison terms of up to three years. Face veils would still be allowed in aeroplanes, diplomatic premises and places of worship.
– If signed into law it would put Portugal alongside European countries including France, Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands, which already have full or partial bans. President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa could still veto the bill or send it to the Constitutional Court for checks. Prince Andrew gives up royal titles including Duke of York after ‘discussion with King’:
– Prince Andrew is giving up his titles, including the Duke of York, he has announced in a personal statement. He has been under increasing pressure over his links with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, with calls for Buckingham Palace to take action against him.
– That now seems to have resulted in the prince deciding to voluntarily hand back his titles and to give up membership of the Order of the Garter, the oldest and most senior order of chivalry in Britain. In his statement he said he continued to “vigorously deny the accusations against me”. “In discussion with the King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family,” said a statement from Prince Andrew. “I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and country first. “I stand by my decision five years ago to stand back from public life. “With His Majesty’s agreement, we feel I must now go a step further. I will therefore no longer use my title or the honours which have been conferred upon me. As I have said previously, I vigorously deny the accusations against me.”
– His decision to stop using his titles was made in consultation with William, Prince of Wales, as well as the King. He will remain a prince – but will cease to be the Duke of York, a title received from his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth. Prince Andrew had already ceased to be a “working royal” and had lost the use of his HRH title and no longer appeared at official royal events. His role now will be even more diminished.
– He is expected to stay in his Windsor home, Royal Lodge, on which he has his own private lease which runs until 2078.
– Next week a posthumous memoir by Ms Giuffre, who took her own life earlier this year, will be published. It is likely to cast further attention on Prince Andrew’s involvement with her and Epstein. Ms Giuffre claimed that she was one of many vulnerable girls and young women who had been sexually exploited by Epstein and his circle of wealthy connections. She alleged that the prince had sex with her at his friend Ghislaine Maxwell’s house in London in 2001, when Ms Giuffre was 17 years old. Her memoir describes two other occasions on which she alleges she had sex with Prince Andrew – in Epstein’s townhouse in New York and on Epstein’s private island in the US Virgin Islands.
– The prince made a financial payment to Ms Giuffre in an out-of-court settlement in 2022, after she had brought a civil case against him. He denies all the accusations made against him. Full article: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cgqlyw9g7weo

Israel strikes Gaza and halts aid, accusing Hamas of attacks in gravest test of truce so far:
– Israel launched a series of strikes in Gaza on Sunday and said it was halting aid into the enclave in response to attacks on its forces, the military said, in the most serious test yet of this month’s U.S.-brokered ceasefire. Residents in Gaza and local health authorities said Israeli airstrikes and tank fire across the enclave killed at least 18 people, including at least one woman. {Breaking news sources are now saying 25 or more dead. -Ed.}
– The Israeli military said it struck Hamas targets including a tunnel, weapons depots and its militants.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he had ordered the military to respond forcefully to what he described as Hamas’ violations of the ceasefire. The military said militants in the southern area of Rafah had launched an anti-tank missile and fired on its soldiers.
– The new ceasefire took effect on October 11, halting two years of war, but the Israeli government and Hamas have been accusing each other of violations of the ceasefire for days. Full article: https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/israeli-media-reports-military-attack-gaza-2025-10-19/

More than a restaurant, Oculto offers a carefully designed immersive experience that begins even before arrival. The daughter of Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith gets married in Valladolid: {Translation, summary}
– Stella del Carmen, daughter of Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith, married economist Alex Gruszynski today at the five-star Abadía Retuerta LeDomaine hotel, a 12th-century former monastery in Sardón de Duero, Valladolid. The intimate ceremony was attended by around 250 guests, including Don Johnson, Dakota Johnson, Barack Obama’s daughters Malia and Sasha, and Trudie Styler. Stella and Alex, who have known each other since childhood, exchanged vows in a heartfelt family atmosphere.
– Antonio Banderas, visibly emotional, praised the ceremony’s elegance, thanked all involved, and even raised a toast with the press. Security was tight: hotel staff were prohibited from using mobile phones, and guests were screened on entry. A helipad facilitated arrivals, and the family occupied nearly all thirty rooms, with other guests accommodated in nearby establishments. The estate, Abadía Retuerta LeDomaine, maintains its historic monastic character, featuring hectares of vineyards, a spa, a Michelin-starred restaurant and luxury accommodation.
– The wedding attracted media crews plus the many spectators that gathered outside the gates offering humorous gestures for the cameras. Antonio Banderas personally oversaw final arrangements after arriving on a private flight. The location, surrounded by vineyards along the Duero, offers a privileged, exclusive setting that blends history, luxury and natural beauty. Chinese micro-housing arrives in Spain to compete with prefabricated houses: {Translation, summary}
– Spain’s ongoing housing crisis, marked by high rental prices and increasing barriers to home ownership, is leading many people to seek alternative living options. One new proposal is the arrival of capsule houses from China, imported exclusively by Caslua Import, a company founded by Beatriz Castro and Antonio Luaña. Beyond their design and resilience, the homes feature advanced technology: voice command operation, an interactive avatar and automated control of lights, curtains and the roof.
– The first capsule house has already been installed in San Vicente do Mar in Pontevedra as a demonstration model. These compact modular homes range from 13 to 40 square metres and can be expanded by adding extra modules. They are constructed from durable materials such as structural aluminium and galvanised steel, and include thermal and acoustic insulation to withstand corrosion and damp. Installation takes about three months from manufacture to delivery. Prices vary between 25,000 and 80,000 euros depending on size and features, and some versions include extras such as a terrace, jacuzzi or retractable roof. Maintenance is minimal and comes with a 25 year guarantee. {These are already on Amazon starting at around €13,000 [ https://www.amazon.es/-/en/dp/B0FWQKSXZ5/ ]
