SPAIN

NATO chief disavows Sánchez on military spending– “He is wrong”: {Translation, summary}
– Spain has been singled out once again as NATO’s weak link after Donald Trump publicly denounced it as the only ally failing to meet spending commitments. Speaking beside Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte at the White House, Trump accused Madrid of “not being a team player” and hinted at vague but “easy” ways to “solve” Spain’s problem– a threat that exposes growing irritation in Washington.
– NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte publicly contradicted the Spanish Government on Wednesday, stating at the West Wing of the White House that the Spanish Prime Minister “is wrong” regarding defence spending, and that this discrepancy “will be revealed very soon”.
– The criticism, repeated several times in recent weeks, highlights Spain’s persistent reluctance to raise its defence budget, despite years of warnings from NATO. Rutte’s attempt to project allied unity only reinforced Spain’s isolation, with both the United States and NATO headquarters confirming it remains outside the agreed financial framework. As other members rally to prove discipline and reliability, Spain’s shortfall now symbolises internal weakness within the Alliance and fuels questions about its credibility as a dependable partner. The former PSOE manager who paid Ábalos and Koldo in cash refuses to testify before the investigative committee: {Translation, summary}
– Questions about the existence of a “B Box” (hidden slush fund) within the PSOE remain unresolved. Mariano Moreno Pavón {pic}, who managed Ferraz when the party distributed cash envelopes to José Luis Ábalos and Koldo García, declined to testify before the Senate’s investigative committee on the ‘Koldo case’, citing a forthcoming Supreme Court summons by judge Leopoldo Puente. Moreno’s testimony is considered crucial to clarifying undocumented cash payments highlighted by the Civil Guard. He is willing to return to the Senate after providing explanations to the Supreme Court.
– The hidden payments were uncovered through investigations by the Civil Guard’s Central Operative Unit (UCO). They relied on multiple sources of evidence, including internal messages from Koldo García, which revealed the existence and amounts of cash payments, and bank and financial records, which allowed investigators to trace the flow of funds even when the transactions were not documented in the PSOE’s official accounts. The cash was delivered in envelopes bearing the party’s letterhead, which helped corroborate the claims, and the investigators also examined the timing of the payments in relation to party activities and political events, such as Pedro Sánchez becoming Prime Minister. This combination of evidence enabled the UCO to quantify over €30,000 in payments to José Luis Ábalos and his aide, despite these transactions being absent from the party’s formal accounting books. Should the local real estate markets be under EU control? Sanchez wants Spain’s housing crisis solved by the EU: {Translation}
– Pedro Sánchez, the Spanish Prime Minister, will propose the creation of a dedicated European fund for social housing and measures to control property prices in pressured areas and tourist accommodation. At the European Council summit in Brussels, the first to address the continent’s housing crisis, Spain will present several initiatives, including legal steps to curb housing speculation for non-residential use. Sánchez also intends to promote European-level mechanisms to intervene in major cities where prices are rising rapidly due to tourism.
– He stressed that access to housing is a European problem affecting both young and older citizens, linking it to the broader social pillar of Europe. Sánchez highlighted a meeting between European Council President António Costa and mayors from cities including Barcelona, Rome, and Paris, who are seeking EU support and legal instruments to tackle the housing crisis. Spain aims to bring these issues to the European stage, advocating coordinated measures to ease pressure on the housing market across the continent. The continuous summer accelerates the massive death of pine trees in the province of Malaga: {Translation, summary}
– Málaga is facing a severe forestry crisis as prolonged summer heat and high ultraviolet radiation accelerate the desertification of soils, killing thousands of trees. Experts highlight that diseased pines act as fuel and reservoirs for insects and fungi, prompting urgent removal and reforestation plans. Fast-growing and drought-resistant species, such as the Cartagena cypress and carob, are being considered.
– Field studies show that larger pines suffer first from hydraulic failure, with south-facing slopes particularly vulnerable. Abiotic factors—reduced rainfall, rising temperatures, and prolonged warm periods—combine with ecological competition and wood-boring beetles to weaken forests.
– City and regional authorities are collaborating with universities and public agencies, investing over €1 million in initial interventions including clearing, thinning, and monitoring. Adaptive silviculture, combining density reduction and resilient species introduction, alongside aerial and satellite monitoring, forms the long-term strategy. This marks the third wave of such forestry decline in Andalucía, demanding meticulous planning to restore and protect Málaga’s forested landscapes.

VÉLEZ-MÁLAGA

A police chase in Vélez-Málaga ends with the seizure of 77 kilos of marijuana in a car: {Translation, summary}
– The Local Police of Vélez-Málaga struck a significant blow to drug trafficking on 22 October, seizing over 77 kilograms of cannabis buds after a high-speed pursuit in the town centre. A Seat León, spotted with a broken rear light and signalling issues, fled from officers, endangering pedestrians before being abandoned by its occupants. Police recovered the vehicle and discovered 67 hermetically sealed bags of cannabis inside, concealed in one raffia bag and two large suitcases. Both the vehicle and the seized drugs were placed at the judiciary’s disposal. The perps escaped on foot. TORREMOLINOS

UPDATE– The 83-year-old German expat A.V., facing eviction over a €2,600 debt in Torremolinos, asked police for a few minutes to get dressed before he shot himself: {Translation}
– The sequence of events on Tuesday, 21 October, in Torremolinos mirrors that of many other evictions, although in this case it ended unexpectedly. The officers knocked on the door through the bars of the security grille that protects it. On the other side, the octogenarian appeared. He was in his underpants. The local police explained that he had to leave the property, as previously communicated, and asked whether he had packed his belongings.
– According to sources consulted, the man requested a few seconds to dress and leave his home. He closed the door behind him, and the officers remained outside to respect his privacy. While waiting at the door, the agents heard a sound that they interpreted as a knock rather than a gunshot. They thought that A. V. had fallen. In fact, it was not the first time they had gone to his home to lift him from the floor.
– The local police began calling his name but received no response. They looked for a vantage point from which to see inside the flat. They managed to lift a street-facing blind and saw that the man was lying on the bed. Fearing a possible emergency, they forced entry and alerted medical services.
– Upon entering the flat, the officers went to assist him and only when they turned him over did they see the blood. Afterwards, they found the weapon, a small-calibre .22 pistol. The man still had a faint pulse, but the officers were certain the wound was fatal. Although he was quickly evacuated, he died hours later at the Regional Hospital of Málaga.
– A.V. took his own life just before the eviction. Everything suggests it was premeditated, as an hour earlier he had handed a bag containing documents and some belongings to a neighbour, to pass on to his daughter, who lives in Germany.
– A.V.’s first eviction attempt was on 11 July 2023. The reason, according to judicial sources reported to SUR, was 2,066 euros in unpaid community fees since 2014, plus 619 euros in interest and costs. He was sued over this debt, and the property was auctioned off to the current owner. Source, Spanish: https://www.diariosur.es/sucesos/octogenario-desahuciado-torremolinos-pidio-minutos-vestirse-suicido-20251022190328-nt_amp.html

MARBELLA

Over two million euros stolen from victims through email attacks recovered in Marbella, most of whom were involved in real estate transactions: {Translation, summary}
– Cyber agents in Marbella have recovered over two million euros stolen from about twenty victims through email-based real estate frauds, primarily using the ‘Man in the Middle’ technique. In this method, criminals intercept legitimate communications between companies, subtly altering emails—such as adding a point or changing a letter—to provide a fraudulent bank account for payment. Victims unknowingly transfer funds to the scammers. In a notable case involving a luxury villa in Marbella, investigators, with help from banks, Interpol, and Europol, recovered 1.445 million euros, blocking transfers to Portugal and Austria. Criminals often use intermediaries, or ‘mules,’ who lend their accounts in return for a fee to launder stolen money. The National Police recommend businesses relying on bank transfers for payments to carefully verify recipient account details and contact information, remain alert to unexplained IBAN changes, and confirm any modifications with the intended recipient to avoid falling victim to such sophisticated cyberfraud. England’s resident doctors to strike for six days in November:
– Resident doctors in England will go on strike next month, their trade union said on Thursday, as part of escalating industrial action over job insecurity and pay erosion.
– The strike action, which will take place between November 14 to 19, follows failed talks with the government to produce what the British Medical Association called a “credible plan” to address unemployment among newly qualified doctors and years of real-terms pay erosion.
– “This is not where we wanted to be,” Jack Fletcher, chair of the BMA’s resident doctors committee, said. “This is a situation which cannot go on.” The action in November follows a five-day strike in July, when resident doctors protested the government’s refusal to improve on a 5.4% pay offer. The BMA has been seeking a 29% rise to restore pay to 2008 levels.

HEALTH

Same old song & dance– The opposition rejects Health Minister Antonio Sanz’s offer to “start a new chapter” in healthcare: {Translation, summary}
– One week after assuming office, Antonio Sanz faced his first parliamentary test in the general debate on Andalusian healthcare, convened after errors in breast cancer screening. Sanz presented sixteen measures to improve public healthcare, including expanding staff, enhancing hospital care, and an “unprecedented digital revolution,” inviting “everyone” to participate. He emphasised that the health system “is above all, above ideology and partisan interests” and declared: “Between a banner and a patient, we will choose the patient; between a headline and a life, we will choose life; and between ideology and humanity, we will choose humanity. Andalusian healthcare cannot be an electoral battlefield.”
– Opposition figures criticised President Juanma Moreno for failing to attend Parliament, calling it “cowardice.” Beatriz Jurado (PP) said: “The use they make of women for politics and their pain does not damage Moreno, but the credibility in the health system.” María Márquez (PSOE) called for “Less propaganda and more media; less private insurance and more public health.” José Ignacio García (Adelante) stated the cancer screening crisis is “the tip of the iceberg of the collapse of the Andalusian public health system.” Source, Spanish: https://www.diariosur.es/andalucia/oposicion-desdena-mano-tendida-sanz-sanidad-20251023223423-nt_amp.html

Andalucía Healthcare Crisis– Opposition Provides Evidence Of Altered Mammogram Images, Andalucian President Moreno called the accusation “absurd”: {Translation, summary}
– During a tense parliamentary session in Andalucía, opposition deputies renewed accusations against the Junta over the breast cancer screening crisis. Central to the controversy is an allegation, promoted by the association Amama and Por Andalucía, that diagnostic images and patient records were altered. Amama reported this to the Andalusian Public Prosecutor’s Office, citing a message on ClicSalud stating tests were temporarily inaccessible. The Junta attributed the access issue to a computer error caused by high demand, but ignored the claim of image manipulation.
– Inma Nieto, spokesperson for Por Andalucía, then presented in Parliament a mammogram showing a potentially tumorous lesion and contrasted it with the image currently displayed on administration portals, in which the lesion is missing. President Moreno {pic} called the accusation “absurd”, emphasising that only SAS healthcare professionals can access patient records and challenging whether any professional had been ordered to manipulate data. He condemned the implication that staff had deliberately altered results, accusing the opposition of exploiting the matter for political advantage ahead of the 2026 elections. {He wouldn’t be so cavalier if it were images of his prostate exam. -Ed.} Source, Spanish: https://www.libertaddigital.com/andalucia/2025-10-23/moreno-reprocha-a-la-izquierda-la-acusacion-a-los-trabajadores-del-sas-de-modificar-datos-clinicos-7311709/

TRAVEL

Disability associations– ‘It is unacceptable that the escalators at Malaga Airport train station have been out of order for months’:
– The breakdown of the four escalators at the Cercanías train station at Malaga Airport, which have been out of service for more than six months, has provoked reactions ranging from concern to indignation. The most affected and, therefore, the most vocal are associations representing people with reduced mobility for whom the escalators are “vital”. Representatives of the tourism sector, on the other hand, are concerned about the reputation of the destination.
– Coordinator of Málaga Accesible Alfredo de Pablos says that the lack of working escalators is “unacceptable”. “They know perfectly well the consequences of this, but nobody takes responsibility.” To highlight the irresponsible approach of state railway operator Renfe to this issue, De Pablos noted that any breakdown of this type at Malaga’s metro stations is fixed within a few hours. He said that urgent actions are necessary, because these escalators are essential not only for “people with disabilities or in wheelchairs but also elderly people who have to carry suitcases”. Malaga airport tests the new control of passengers from outside the EU: {Translation, summary}
– A new automated system, the Entry/Exit System (EES), will register non-European travellers entering and leaving the Schengen Area using facial recognition and fingerprints, eliminating passport stamping. Full implementation is expected by 10 April 2026. British travellers in Málaga, the largest visiting group with 2.83 million arrivals last year, are most affected. The tourism sector has engaged with authorities to minimise disruption. Spanish border control, managed by the National Police, will operate the system, which records passport details, photos, fingerprints, entry and exit dates, and refusals of entry. {Expect a large increase in identity theft cases as hackers will gain access to these databases quickly! Once they have your passport info, and photos, and fingerprints, and biometric face scans, there will be no end to the mischief the con-artists will get up to! This is less about protecting borders, and more about forcing globalist “Digital IDs”, and eventually “Digital Money Wallets”, down our throats. Resist! -Ed.} During its six-month phased rollout, the EES will initially operate for only one hour per day, coexisting with manual passport stamping. EU officials emphasise that it provides real-time, accurate data to detect security threats, identity fraud, and irregular migration, including overstayers and illegal entry attempts, thereby significantly enhancing border management and security. RELIGION

King Charles and Pope Leo pray together in a 500-year first:
– Britain’s King Charles and Pope Leo prayed together in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel on Thursday, in the first joint worship including an English monarch and a Catholic pontiff since King Henry VIII broke away from Rome in 1534. Latin chants and English prayers echoed through the chapel, where Leo was elected the first U.S. pope by the world’s Catholic cardinals six months ago in front of frescoes by Michelangelo depicting Christ delivering the Last Judgment.
– The King and Queen Camilla are on a state visit to the Vatican marking the refreshed ties between the Catholic Church and Anglican Communion, five centuries after their turbulent separation. “There is a strong sense that this moment in the extraordinary setting of the Sistine Chapel offers a kind of healing of history,” Anglican Rev. James Hawkey, canon theologian of Westminster Abbey, told Reuters. “This would have been impossible just a generation ago,” he said. “It represents how far our churches have come over the last 60 years of dialogue.” Full article: https://www.reuters.com/world/uk/king-charles-pope-leo-pray-together-500-year-first-2025-10-23/

During this time of uncertainty, God’s Word reminds us that the Gospel shines brightest in times of darkness. Our service lasts for about 1 hour and 30 mins. With Tea and Coffee afterwards.
– Prayer Meeting:
You are also welcome to join our prayer meetings on Wednesday mornings at 11.00am for 1 hour, where we meet for prayer and worship.
– Jesus said: “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me”. (John 14:6)

We enjoy a time of worship with contemporary songs and traditional hymns, and a message brought to us by our Pastor, one of our members or a visiting speaker.
The church meeting hall is situated at: Res: El Olivar 5, 8 Bajo 1, Calle Arbequin, Velez Malaga 29700.
Full directions and further information can be found on our Facebook page, or you can contact us by email on elpuentechristianfellowship@gmail.com or by phone on 665626342.

Please take a look at our website, where you will find more information and photos, plus details of other dogs and pups that we have in our care.  Our adoption costs are 110e for pups that have been fully vaccinated, rabies, chip and passport. 180e for older dogs that have all vaccinations, neutered and passport. This contributes towards their vet and care costs, and helps us to continue rescuing abandoned dogs and cats.
