Natterbox ‘a short cut to friendship’: Nerja/Torrox areas
Natterbox started October 2019 as a friendship group* for people who ‘come and go’ to Spain, as a means of contacting those in a similar position.
We have no fixed meeting/agendas– just people getting together for a ‘good old natter’, get-togethers are spontaneous depending on who is around.
The Schengen regulations have made things harder, as individuals ‘calendars’ might not synch well, and the pandemic also created problems as people left due to ill health or deciding to sell up holiday homes here.
It seems a good time to ‘refresh our membership’, so if you enjoy good conversation about nothing in particular and are in the Nerja/Torrox area, or if you have any questions, it would be good to hear from you.
* I have to add this, just in case…this is not for ‘lonely hearts!

On Thursday Sánchez Faces Senate ‘Koldo Commission’ Interrogation, Aims to Hold Ground Amid PP Pressure: {Translation, summary}
– Pedro Sánchez will appear before the Senate’s Koldo commission on 30 October to answer questions about alleged irregularities involving two former PSOE Secretaries of Organisation, José Luis Ábalos and Santos Cerdán, and ex-adviser Koldo García, all under Supreme Court investigation.
– Sánchez and the PSOE expect a “dirty” interrogation by the PP, which holds an absolute majority, and considers the 50-minute question-and-answer turns per group unfavourable. Sánchez will not exercise the right to remain silent, aiming instead to maintain an institutional profile and answer along familiar lines without revealing new information or making announcements. Accompanied by senior aides, he approaches the session “with normality” but scaled up from his usual congressional control appearances.
– The government signals that its objective is merely to hold its ground, “to avoid political damage”, and urges restraint so the session does not become a spectacle. Despite criticism of Feijóo’s decision to summon him, Sánchez plans to remain composed regardless of which senator questions him.

Sánchez finally comes out of hiding but declines to debate with Feijóo on the anniversary of the DANA– ‘It is a day for empathy with the victims.’: {Translation, summary}
– Pedro Sánchez addressed the Congress on the first anniversary of the Dana tragedy, which killed 237 people, mostly in Valencia, calling the day one for “empathy, remembrance, memory and commitment” to the victims. The session opened with a minute of silence.
– During the session of statements, opposition leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo pressed Sánchez on whether he would “tell the truth” in Thursday’s Senate inquiry into the Koldo case, accusing him of habitual lying. Sánchez declined to answer, insisting “today is not the day” and focusing on commemorating the victims and praising volunteers and public workers who aided in the disaster.
– PSOE spokesperson Patxi López reinforced the message, stressing that the day was for recognition, not political conflict, but then began criticising Mazón, President of the Valencian Government, for alleged lies and inaction.
– PP sources countered that Sánchez selectively avoids questions on corruption while answering others, signalling that he will face targeted questions in the upcoming Senate commission, highlighting a persistent tension between institutional commemoration and political accountability. Iberdrola begins to charge its customers for the additional cost of the blackout on their electricity bills, estimating it at €210 million: {Translation, summary}
– Spanish electricity customers will see higher bills as companies begin passing on costs from Red Eléctrica’s reinforced operation since the April blackout. Iberdrola will transfer 70% of these extra charges, about 180 million euros in Spain, to consumers next year. The increase mainly affects those in the liberalised market as fixed-price contracts are renewed.
– Regulatory changes now allow firms to recover costs previously absorbed themselves, but consumers must be informed in advance of amounts and reasons for price rises. Rising adjustment service costs, driven by network stability needs and renewable integration, reached a record 2.888 billion euros in the first nine months of the year. Customers should expect a gradual tariff increase as these charges are progressively incorporated into electricity bills. ANDALUCÍA
Severe Storms and Tornadoes Hit Western Andalusia, Causing Widespread Flooding and Disruption: {Translation, summary}
– Heavy rain and storms in western Andalusia have caused over 900 incidents, with Huelva hardest hit. Accumulations reached 160 litres per square metre, prompting warnings in 12 municipalities. A tornado in Gibraleón injured a man severely, while another tornado and a waterspout on the Huelva coast damaged schools, trees, walls, and power infrastructure. Flooding forced the evacuation of a school in Cartaya and trapped vehicles and homes in Ayamonte and Villablanca.
– Seville recorded 115 litres per square metre of rain, causing over 600 incidents. Public transport suffered, with trains and metro services interrupted, and Virgen de Macarena Hospital flooded. Parks, sports facilities, and universities closed, and the Motor Show was cancelled due to operational disruptions. Minor flooding, fallen trees, and property damage were reported elsewhere, including Cádiz, where all ferries to Tangier were cancelled. The extreme weather has severely disrupted daily life, transport, and essential services in the affected provinces. NERJA
Police operation to remove motorhomes in the natural area of Maro-Cerro Gordo: {Translation, summary}
– Authorities removed around fifty caravans and motorhomes illegally parked in the protected Maro-Cerro Gordo Cliffs during a coordinated operation involving the Junta de Andalucía, the Civil Guard and the Local Police of Nerja. Most of the vehicles belonged to foreign citizens and were stationed near the beaches of Las Alberquillas, Molino de Papel, Río de la Miel and Cala del Pino. Environmental agents directed the action to halt unauthorised camping and enforce strict protection rules in the natural area.
– After the eviction, Nerja Town Council crews cleared debris and restored the site. The Junta described the operation as part of its wider campaign to eliminate recurring illegal occupations and safeguard the park’s fragile coastal and marine ecosystems. Officers issued warnings and began proceedings for environmental offences against several offenders, reinforcing the administration’s zero-tolerance policy on illegal camping and parking. VIÑUELA
Head-on traffic accident in La Viñuela: {Translation, summary}
– Three people suffered minor injuries in a head-on collision between two cars on the A-356 near La Viñuela on Wednesday afternoon. The accident occurred at kilometre 39 and left both vehicles damaged. The occupants, two in one car and one in the other, managed to exit without assistance before emergency crews arrived.
– Firefighters from Vélez-Málaga provided initial aid, controlled traffic and cleared one of the vehicles that had blocked the road. Medical staff treated the injured at the scene and later transferred them to a local health centre for further checks. The Civil Guard took over the investigation to determine the cause of the crash, which briefly disrupted traffic in both directions. Authorities described the injuries as minor and confirmed that no further damage or secondary incidents occurred as a result of the collision. ALHAURÍN DE LA TORRE
The suspects of the wave of robberies in the neighbourhood of La Alquería de Alhaurín de la Torre arrested: {Translation, summary}
– An Argentine man and woman have been arrested in Alhaurín de la Torre for a series of burglaries that caused public alarm in La Alquería over the summer. The pair entered Spain in March on tourist visas and allegedly committed at least 17 robberies after scouting areas and using rental cars. They gained access to homes by scaling walls and cutting window bars with hydraulic tools {pic}, stealing around 14,000 euros in cash, jewellery and valuables, which they sent to Argentina through money transfer firms. In one case, they even drank champagne and beer at a property before fleeing. Neighbours organised patrols and shared alerts through WhatsApp to monitor suspicious activity. Police intercepted the suspects just before another burglary, seizing their vehicle and tools. Both were taken before Malaga’s Court of Instruction number 6, which ordered their imprisonment. Dutch Elections– D66 projected thin lead over PVV, 27 to 25 seats in exit poll: {Translation from Dutch, summary}
– D66 has become the largest party in the 2025 House of Representatives elections, according to the exit poll by research firm Ipsos. Following them is the PVV, which is projected to receive 25 seats according to the exit poll.
– This info comes from an exit poll, and both parties are within each other’s margin of error. The final result may differ by one to two seats from this projection.
– With D66 and PVV nearly tied, the coalition talks will likely focus on which centrist parties are willing to cooperate with D66, while PVV may be sidelined due to its polarising reputation. The formation process could take several weeks to months, as parties negotiate policies, ministries, and compromises.

HEALTH
Imminent strike by senior healthcare technicians leaves 30,000 daily lab tests in Malaga up in the air: {Summary}
– More than 1,600 senior healthcare technicians in Malaga will strike on 30–31 October and 3–4 November to protest against unfair pay and lack of professional recognition. The industrial action, organised by SIETeSS and other unions, could paralyse around 30,000 daily tests, including blood, urine, stool and imaging procedures, across public and private hospitals. The strike targets Spain’s Ministry of Health but will directly affect Andalucía’s public healthcare service (SAS). Technicians, essential to diagnostic and laboratory work, demand professional reclassification, fair pay, a regulated healthcare status, and the creation of a university degree programme. Many fear that if samples are not analysed promptly, up to 85% of blood tests could spoil, disrupting scheduled procedures and delaying diagnoses.
– While urgent services will continue under SAS minimum requirements, routine testing is expected to suffer major delays. Healthcare sources anticipate significant disruption but hope hospitals can maintain critical operations. Historic find- a specimen of leucistic Iberian lynx photographed in Jaén that could be the only one in the world: {Translation, summary}
– Nature photographer Ángel Hidalgo has documented an extraordinary leucistic Iberian lynx in Jaén, Spain, marking the first record of this rare genetic variation in the country and possibly the only one in the world. The lynx, located on 22 October in a secret area of Jaén province, displays a striking white coat, distinct from albinism, making it an exceptionally rare find. FINANCIAL
Pays rock bottom rates, collects record profits & fees- Santander obtains profit of 10,337 million euros thru September, up 11%: {Translation, summary}
– Banco Santander reported a net profit of €10,337 million in the first nine months of 2025, an 11 % increase year-on-year, its best result for this period. Total revenues were €46,277 million, driven by a net interest income of €33,816 million and record fee income of €10,011 million. Return on tangible equity rose to 16.1 %, and earnings per share grew to €0.66 (+16 %). Efficiency improved to 41.3 % and non-performing loans fell to 2.92 %. Customer funds reached €1.33 trillion, yet deposits declined by 1.9 % to €1.04 trillion and loans by 3.8 % to €1.06 trillion.
– Against these strong financials, customer investment and deposit rates remain extremely low. For example, typical savings-account interest rates in Spain are as low as 0.05 % per annum, with only promotional offers at about 2–3 % for short-term deposits. Meanwhile Santander’s own basic accounts offer 0 % interest in many cases.
– This stark contrast between enormous profits and minimal returns to investors and depositors suggests that the bank is benefiting from locking in customer funds at very low cost and using them to drive profitability. The imbalance raises concerns: while the bank celebrates huge profits, the customers whose capital underpins those profits receive negligible reward. Source, Spanish: https://www.europapress.es/economia/finanzas-00340/noticia-santander-obtiene-beneficio-record-10337-millones-euros-septiembre-11-mas-20251029070552.html

Spain to Approve Landmark Law Ending Long Call Waits and Tightening Rules on Customer Service and Spam Calls: {Translation, summary}
– Spain’s Congress is set to approve a new law radically transforming customer service standards. The legislation, promoted by the Ministry of Social Rights, will require companies to answer 95% of customer calls within three minutes and to resolve complaints within fifteen days instead of thirty. Firms must offer a free customer service line, staffed 24 hours a day for essential services such as water, electricity, gas and communications, and provide assistance in Spanish and any co-official regional language. The law bans exclusive reliance on automated systems, ensuring customers can speak to a human operator at any time. It also forbids using service calls for marketing, imposes external audits and satisfaction surveys, and allows fines of up to €100,000 for breaches.
– Additionally, the law outlaws all unsolicited sales calls, requiring identifiable prefixes and annulling contracts agreed through them, and tightens restrictions on online gambling advertising, particularly to protect minors. Passage is expected by early 2026 with overwhelming parliamentary support.
