SPAIN
Supreme Court Charges Ex-Minister Ábalos, Adviser García, and Businessman Aldama over Pandemic Mask Contracts: {Translation, summary}
– The Supreme Court has formally charged former Transport Minister José Luis Ábalos, his ex-adviser Koldo García, and businessman Víctor de Aldama over irregular face mask contracts during the pandemic. Judge Leopoldo Puente sees evidence of bribery, embezzlement, influence peddling, and criminal organisation. The order marks the end of this branch of the “Koldo case,” though a separate probe into public works contracting remains open.
– The ruling alleges Aldama made cash payments to Ábalos and García in return for official favours, forming a long-term scheme to profit from government connections. The judge also cites suspicious contracts and property dealings involving associates and state firms such as Ineco, Tragsa, and Logirail. Bank records allegedly show sharp rises in García’s cash deposits while Ábalos held office. Unless he resigns his parliamentary seat, Ábalos will now face trial before the Supreme Court once prosecutors and private accusers file their charges.
– {Note: In Spain, members of Parliament (diputados) enjoy a special legal status known as “aforamiento”. This means that if they are investigated or prosecuted for a criminal offence, their cases must be handled directly by the Supreme Court, not by an ordinary court such as the National Court (Audiencia Nacional) or a provincial court. So when the text says: “Unless he resigns his parliamentary seat, Ábalos will now face trial before the Supreme Court…” it means that as long as he remains an MP, only the Supreme Court has jurisdiction to try him. If he resigns his seat, he loses that immunity, and the case would then be transferred to the National Court, which handles high-level corruption and financial crimes involving people who are not aforados (privileged under law). -Ed.} Source, Spanish: https://www.elmundo.es/espana/2025/11/03/69086967fc6c83b35c8b458f.html

The courts now have Begoña’s last 7 years of emails– Judge requests a report from the UCO analysing them: {Translation}
– Judge Juan Carlos Peinado has received a copy of the emails of Begoña Gómez, the wife of the Prime Minister, and has sent them to the Central Operative Unit (UCO) of the Civil Guard for analysis.
– This is recorded in an order in which the judge notes that Moncloa has delivered to him a USB drive containing documentation that includes a copy of the emails received and sent from the corporate account assigned to Gómez, between 18 July 2018 and 23 September 2025. {If Moncloa actually sent a complete catalogue of all of Begoña’s emails is one of the things the analysis will look at. -Ed.}
– “Send these to the UCO (economic crimes section) so that they may analyse them and produce a report on those related to the case,” Peinado declares, specifying that afterwards he will provide the parties with both the report and the emails analysed, “to preserve the right to privacy.” Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/espana/juez-peinado-pide-uco-informe_0_2005158660.html

Road between Nerja and Almuñécar is one of the most dangerous in the whole of Spain:
– It is a winding road which clings to cliffs and offers unbeatable views of the Mediterranean Sea and it is a favourite spot for motorcyclists. A section of the old N-340 road in Malaga province, on the border between Nerja and Almuñécar (Granada province), is considered one of the most dangerous in Spain. GASTRONOMIA
The rebirth of family wineries in Axarquía and their wine route: {Translation, summary}
– There are many small family-run wineries, and it is the Muscat grape that is still cultivated as it was years ago. “Our grandparents worked these very same vines. It is a heritage we cannot allow to disappear,” says a winemaker from Cómpeta as he shows his barrels. His passion is tangible and contagious.
– To experience it, one must visit Bodega Dimobe in Cómpeta. It offers tours where modern facilities stand alongside traditional methods, and, most importantly, the visit ends on a terrace with panoramic views. It is the perfect way to understand the union between past and present. The sun-dried Moscatel wine is the best that can be tasted.
– Another gem is Bodega José García, also in the heart of Cómpeta, a family-run winery where the welcome is as warm as the climate. Its charm makes it clear why this village is the unofficial capital of Axarquía’s wine.
– The route would not be complete without Almáchar, the birthplace of the raisin. The Raisin Museum is officially recognised, though not a winery. Interestingly, learning about the meticulous process of sun-drying on the famous drying beds greatly enriches the tasting experience that follows.
– For the curious traveller, the experience is best enjoyed in the most traditional taverns. In Cómpeta, Restaurante El Pilón is the prime example, where pairing wine with a Mediterranean menu is almost a daily ritual. It is a simple yet deeply rooted pleasure that unites the fruit of the vine with the cuisine of the land.
– The fact is that this route is not only about flavour, but also about a way of life. It is a slow journey, a path to savour at leisure, where each winery tells a story waiting to be discovered and where every tasting is a toast to the dedication of a land that continues to write our legend, drop by drop. PSOE-A Accuses Andalusian Government of Destroying Key Documents in €53 Million Health Contract Scandal: {Translation, summary}
– PSOE-A spokesman Mario Jiménez accused the Andalusian Government of the alleged disappearance and mutilation of contractual documents worth at least 53 million euros, linked to the irregular use of emergency contracts in the Andalusian Health Service. He claimed that information once shown to a judge had later vanished and denounced what he called a premeditated concealment strategy from San Telmo, the regional government headquarters. Jiménez said repeated requests for contracting data since May had been ignored and warned that evidence might be destroyed. – He blamed President Juanma Moreno’s administration for obstructing justice and worsening the health system through mismanagement and diversion of public funds to private firms. Linking the issue to failures in breast cancer screening, he accused the Junta of hiding information from the Health Ministry and blocking a parliamentary inquiry, portraying Moreno as an unprincipled right-wing leader who lacks transparency and empathy. Court Upholds Extension of SAS Contract Probe as Three Former Health Chiefs Face Criminal Allegations: {Translation, summary}
– The Provincial Court of Seville has upheld Judge José Antonio Gómez Díaz’s decision to extend by six months the investigation into the Andalusian Health Service’s (SAS) alleged irregular contracting with private clinics. The case, initiated by a complaint from the Andalusian Socialist Party (PSOE), accuses current SAS director Valle García and her predecessors, Miguel Ángel Guzmán and Diego Vargas, of continuous offences of malfeasance, embezzlement, falsification of public documents, and participation in a criminal organisation. Their lawyer had appealed to stop the inquiry before their scheduled court appearance on 25 November, arguing that the extension lacked legal basis and amounted to a “prospective” investigation without solid evidence.
– The inquiry focuses on hundreds of direct contracts signed between 2020 and 2024 without public competition or prior oversight, many of them justified under pandemic emergency powers already repealed. The court also examines a related Cádiz case involving contract splitting with a single company. Judge Gómez has requested extensive documentation from the Junta de Andalucía and summoned senior officials, including Deputy Finance Minister Amelia Martínez and former SAS finance chief José Antonio Miranda. Internal audit reports, later revealed publicly, had already questioned the legality of these payments and triggered the ongoing judicial process. November’s supermoon this Wednesday, the ‘Beaver Moon’, the closest of the year:
– The moon will look slightly bigger and brighter Wednesday night during the closest supermoon of the year. The moon’s orbit around the Earth isn’t a perfect circle, so it gets nearer and farther as it swings around. A so-called supermoon happens when a full moon is closer to Earth in its orbit. That makes the moon look up to 14% bigger and 30% brighter than the faintest moon of the year, according to NASA.
– November’s supermoon is the second of three supermoons this year and also the closest: The moon will come within just under 222,000 miles (357,000 kilometres) of Earth. Supermoons happen a few times a year. One in October made the moon look somewhat larger, and another in December will be the last of the year. With pharaoh-like fanfare, Egypt unveils a huge new museum dedicated to its ancient civilization:
– In an extravaganza of pharaonic imagery with a drone light show depicting ancient gods and pyramids in the sky, Egypt on Saturday inaugurated its long-delayed Grand Egyptian Museum, a megaproject aiming to give the country’s millennia-old heritage a rich, modern display. Two decades in the making, the museum located near the Giza Pyramids and the Sphinx is the centrepiece of the government’s bid to boost Egypt’s tourism industry and bring cash into the troubled economy.
– Touted as the world’s biggest museum dedicated to a single ancient civilization, the new building, in contemporary style is a stark contrast. Its large, open halls give space for some 50,000 artifacts on display, along with virtual reality exhibits. It displays the entire collection of treasures from the tomb of the famed King Tutankhamun for the first time since its discovery in 1922. The museum replaces the Egyptian Museum, housed in building more than a century old in downtown Cairo that — while elegant in its Neo-Classical style — had become antiquated and was often compared to a warehouse, overpacked with artifacts with little explanation.
– The museum’s 12 main galleries, which opened last year, exhibit antiquities spanning from prehistoric times to the Roman era, organized by eras and by themes. Two halls that will be opened for the first time after Saturday are dedicated to the 5,000 artifacts from the collection of King Tutankhamun — a boy pharaoh who ruled from 1361-1352 B.C. The tomb was discovered by British archaeologist Howard Carter in 1922 in the southern city of Luxor. The old Egyptian Museum did not have enough room to display the whole collection. The collection includes the boy pharaoh’s three funeral beds and six chariots, his golden throne, his gold-covered sarcophagus and his burial mask, made of gold, quartzite, lapis lazuli and coloured glass. NATURE
Orcas are ganging up on great white sharks to eat their livers:
– Orcas in the Gulf of California have been hunting juvenile great white sharks using a clever tactic: flipping them upside down to render them immobile. The discovery suggests there may be a previously unrecognised group of orcas in the region that specialises in hunting sharks. Only a few orca populations are known to feed on sharks, and even fewer have been found to eat great whites (Carcharodon carcharias).
– Jesús Erick Higuera-Rivas, an independent marine biologist in Mexico, and his colleagues captured video footage of orcas in the Gulf of California hunting juvenile great white sharks on two separate occasions. The first, recorded in August 2020, showed five female orcas working together to push a young great white to the surface. “The orcas were ramming the great white to flip it upside down,” says Higuera-Rivas.
– The manoeuvre forced the shark into a state of temporary paralysis, called tonic immobility. It also allowed the orcas to get at the shark’s energy-rich liver, which they shared amongst themselves. A few minutes later, the pod repeated the attack on a different adolescent great white. In August 2022, the research team recorded another group of five orcas using the same technique to hunt a young great white around the same location at the same time of year.
– Orca populations drastically differ depending on where they are located. “Orcas are hunting machines. They are like snipers – they use specific hunting strategies, very specific ones depending on their prey,” says Higuera-Rivas. These findings suggest the orcas belong to a previously unrecognised shark-eating group, he says. FINANCIAL
Inflation picks up slightly to 3.1% in October and stands at 16-month highs: {Translation, summary}
– Spain’s annual inflation rate rose to 3.1% in October, its highest level in sixteen months, according to preliminary data from the National Statistics Institute. The increase was driven mainly by higher electricity, air and rail transport costs, partly offset by cheaper petrol. Core inflation, which excludes volatile energy and unprocessed foods, also rose slightly to 2.5%, reflecting persistent underlying pressures.
– Electricity prices surged as the 21% VAT rate returned in January 2025 and wholesale prices jumped by 58% from September to October. Rail fares increased due to reduced transport subsidies, still in place until year-end. Analysts from Funcas expect inflation to fall towards 2% by early 2026, aligning with central bank targets. The ten-month average suggests pensions will rise about 2.6% next year, slightly less than 2025’s 2.8%. Overall, the data confirm renewed inflationary momentum despite forecasts of moderation in the coming months.
