ANNUAL HOLIDAY FUNDRAISER

 I can only produce DigameXtra with the financial support of my readers. Once a year, during the year end holidays, I do an 8 week fundraiser to help pay production expenses throughout the whole year. This year’s goal is to receive donations from 4% of subscribers. This “4% Club” finances DigameXtra for the 96% group that don’t donate. Which group will you belong to? The generosity of the 4% Club members is greatly appreciated.

Just like your morning coffee,
what would you do
without your morning DigameXtra?

– Holiday Donation Info, 2 Methods –

DigameXtra subscribers must donate at least €20 (39 cents per week) to gain annual submission posting privileges.

#1. You may drop cash donations off in person and say hello, by appointment, or place them in my mailbox beside my door anytime. Please be sure to include your name on the envelope so I can put you on the list of subscribers with submission posting privileges for 2025-2026! Due to health reasons, unannounced drop-ins are inconvenient for me. But if I am expecting you, no problem! My mailbox has the name HARRIS on it. Email me for map and directions. Cash donations are strongly preferred.
#2. Alternatively, you may send me an Amazon ES (Spain) “eGift card” by email. You need to have an Amazon.es account. The only info you need is my email address and your name (the sender’s name). Remember, this is an “eGift card” you buy that Amazon.es emails directly to me, don’t buy a plain “gift card”. Use the link provided below to access the “eGift card” purchase page.
PLEASE DO NOT SEND AMAZON UK eGIFT CARDS. NO BANK TRANSFERS OR PAYMENT APPS.
Here is the Amazon.es eGift Card Link, (NOTE: YOU CAN CHOOSE ANY AMOUNT YOU LIKE ON THE FORM, THE DEFAULT IS €60):
https://www.amazon.es/Cheques-Regalo-Amazon-es-mail-Amazon/dp/B07SS5PFJK/?th=1&gpo=60
On the eGift card purchase form, enter the DigameXtra email as the recipient, as shown below in Spanish and with English translation.
Para/For : digamextra@protonmail.com

Please do not ask me about gaining posting privileges by making small donations of under €20, several times a year. Several people promised to do that for each of the last two annual fundraisers, and not a single one followed up.

Total Donations Received As Of Today: 22

Target, 4% of subscribers = 200 donations

SPAIN

Inflation in Spain hits 16-month high as egg prices soar 22% this year: {Summary}
– In October 2025, Spain’s inflation climbed to 3.1%, up 0.1% from September, reaching its highest level in 16 months. The rise was largely driven by higher electricity and transport costs, especially air and rail travel, although falling prices for package holidays and fuel helped offset some of the increase. Food prices were mixed: fresh fruit, eggs and olive oil rose, while vegetables, bread and dairy products fell. The bird flu outbreak, which led to the confinement of outdoor poultry, pushed egg prices up 5% in October, bringing the annual rise to 21.7%, making eggs the fastest-growing food item in the CPI. Olive oil increased 2.7% in October but has dropped 41.6% since October 2024. Over the first ten months of 2025, overall prices rose 2.4%, mainly due to hotels, cafés and restaurants, housing, and food. Core inflation also edged up, reaching 2.5% in October. ANDALUCÍA

Andalucian municipalities in Sevilla, Cádiz & Córdoba on alert for the West Nile virus, now at eleven sites: {Translation, summary}
– Andalucía has declared Aznalcázar an alert area after West Nile virus was detected in local mosquitoes, while Villamanrique de la Condesa remains at high risk. In total, alert status applies to: Aznalcázar; La Línea de la Concepción; Guadalcázar; Las Cabezas de San Juan; Morón de la Frontera; La Rinconada; Almensilla; San Juan de Aznalfarache; Mairena del Aljarafe; Gelves; Burguillos; and Torrepalma of Carmona. In total, eleven municipalities are now under alert, each with specific end dates for their status. The alert requires a minimum of four weeks of heightened surveillance or until no further virus activity is detected.
– Alerts run between mid November and early to mid December depending on the municipality. Measures include intensified animal, human and mosquito surveillance, public guidance through pharmacies and schools, and strengthened mosquito control within 1.5 kilometres of population centres. Three confirmed human cases have occurred this season, with wide mosquito monitoring across multiple provinces. ALGARROBO

Jackfruit– The Giant Tropical Fruit That Grows in Algarrobo: {Translation, summary}
– Jackfruit has been successfully cultivated in the Axarquía, with a notable focus on the La Mayora estate in Algorrobo. The scientific centre there reports producing fruits weighing around 15 kilos each this autumn, confirming that the local climate supports the species even if the fruit does not reach the extreme sizes of up to 40 kilos seen in tropical countries. La Mayora, operated by the national research council and the University of Malaga, highlights the crop’s versatility, since it can be eaten green as a meat substitute or ripe for desserts and other preparations. The tree originates from Indonesia and is widespread in southern Asia, where the fruit is highly valued. Jackfruit is the largest edible fruit in the world and is known for its rough skin, sticky latex and sweet, aromatic flesh. Although difficult to cut and heavy to transport, it has a growing market presence in Malaga and the wider Costa del Sol. Photo: SUR. IZNATE

The City Council warns the residents of Iznate– tap water cannot be consumed: {Translation, summary}
– Residents of Iznate have been advised that local tap water is not safe to drink because high chlorate levels have been detected in all supply tanks. Until new test results are available, an alternative supply of bottled water is being provided. Residents can collect it at the Covirán supermarket or at the municipal storehouse in La Era. The Town Hall states that corrective measures have already been applied and that anyone with questions may contact the Water Supply Manager. The water for the village is supplied through the El Trapiche treatment plant, and chlorate increases may occur if storage tanks are poorly maintained. EUROPE

EU Embraces Nukes Again– Czech Republic plans $19 billion nuclear expansion to double output and end fossil fuel reliance; Belgium, Poland & Sweden scrap phase-out plans:
– “Nuclear will generate between 50% and 60% [of electricity] around 2050 in the Czech Republic, or maybe slightly more,” Petr Závodský, chief executive of the Dukovany project, told The Associated Press in an interview. The nuclear expansion is needed to help the country wean itself off fossil fuels, secure steady and reliable supplies at a reasonable price, meet low emission requirements and enable robust demand for electricity expected in the coming years to power data centers and electric cars, Závodský said.
– The Czech expansion comes at a time when surging energy demand and looming deadlines by countries and companies to sharply cut carbon pollution are helping to revive interest in nuclear technology. While nuclear power does produce waste, it does not produce greenhouse gas emissions, like carbon dioxide, the main driver of climate change.
– The European Union has accepted nuclear by including it in the classification system for environmentally sustainable economic activities, opening the door to financing. That has been a boost for the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and France, the continent’s nuclear leader, that have heavily relied on nuclear.
– Belgium and Sweden recently scrapped plans to phase out nuclear power. Denmark and Italy are reconsidering its use, while Poland is set to join a club of 12 nuclear-friendly nations in the European Union after signing a deal with U.S.-based Westinghouse to build three nuclear units.
– The EU generated 24% of nuclear electricity in 2024. Full article: https://apnews.com/article/czech-nuclear-energy-expansion-cef8a1757ac1221cb9c258a312cf2683

UK

Believe it when the tree bears fruit– UK government poised to overhaul its asylum system as a political storm brews over migration:
– The British government plans to tighten its asylum system in a series of sweeping changes modelled after Denmark that aims to reduce immigration and quell the political storm over migrants making dangerous English Channel crossings to enter the country without authorization. The policy changes to be announced by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood on Monday in the House of Commons are yet another an attempt to make the U.K. less attractive to those seeking refuge and easier to remove migrants who don’t qualify for asylum.
– Mahmood said it was a moral mission to control the borders and reunite a divided country on the flashpoint issue that has helped fuel the rise of the hard-right Reform UK Party, though as the daughter of migrants she denied the ruling centre-left Labour Party was adopting far-right talking points. “People can see huge pressure in their communities and they can also see a system that is broken, and where people are able to flout the rules, abuse the system and get away with it,” Mahmood told the BBC.
– Net migration stood at 431,000 in the year to June 2025, according to the Office for National Statistics, down 49.9% from 860,000 a year earlier. Full article: https://apnews.com/article/britain-uk-asylum-reform-denmark-refugee-mahmood-d680b1749238b336dc7b8c5063bf904f

– Jannik Sinner successfully defended his Nitto ATP Finals title on Sunday in Turin, where he used the backing of a raucous Italian crowd to overcome his great rival Carlos Alcaraz 7-6(4), 7-5.
– With his two-hour, 15-minute victory, the Italian joined John McEnroe and Boris Becker as the only men to lift multiple Nitto ATP Finals trophies on home soil.
– Now 10-0 across his past two appearances at the prestigious year-end event, including a perfect 5-0 run this week, Sinner departs Turin with a record $5,071,000 champion’s payout, the largest in tournament history. TECH

The Hidden Dangers of Biometric Validation: {Translation, summary}
– Biometric authentication promises convenience and security but carries risks that are often overlooked. Unlike passwords, biometric data such as faces, fingerprints, irises or voices cannot be changed if compromised. A leak or unauthorised sharing can leave individuals exposed for years, with cybercriminals potentially exploiting their traits in future services, such as banking, without recourse. Furthermore, the same biometric trait may link multiple systems, companies or databases, raising concerns about merging personal, professional and family information without consent.
– Users face uncertainty over who accesses their biometric data, for how long, and for what purpose. Weak safeguards can enable mass surveillance, identification in peaceful gatherings, tracking of daily movements, profiling or denial of services through algorithms. The imbalance of power is a core issue: organisations controlling biometric templates hold significant authority over identities and access. When rules are opaque, purposes unclear, or non-biometric alternatives are penalised, individuals lose autonomy and face permanent exposure.
– Technology alone cannot guarantee security or peace of mind. True protection requires clear limits, effective oversight, and the ability to choose freely. Biometric keys must be managed so that individuals retain control over how, where and for what their data is used, ensuring safety in the twenty-first century. NATURE

A Japanese park in the heart of Malaga- with an artificial lake, bridges and slides surrounded by bamboos and bonsai: {Translation, summary}
– Málaga’s Bienquerido Oriental Garden in Alhaurín de la Torre covers around 12,000 square metres and has become a major green space and popular attraction since opening in 2011. The park features ponds, waterfalls, wooden bridges and pagodas, inspired by Japanese gardens. The Bienquerido Stream divides the garden into two banks connected by oriental-style wooden bridges. Visitors can enjoy an artificial lagoon with fish and turtles, a zen garden and three pagodas, alongside a variety of oriental plants including bamboo, bonsai, reeds and Japanese cedars. Native trees and shrubs such as olives, acacias, cypresses and pines have been shaped to harmonise with the Japanese-style landscaping.
– For exercise, the park includes an outdoor bio friendly gym, and families can make use of a 600-square-metre children’s area with slides, swings and attractions suitable for all ages. The garden offers a photogenic and tranquil environment for leisurely strolls, exercise or a day out with family in nature.
– With Monday as the closing day for staff rest, from Tuesday to Friday it will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., while on weekends and holidays it will be open from 10.30 a.m. to 7.30 p.m.

SPACE

Mid-November meteors– the Leonids: Peaks tonight
– Predicted peak: The peak is predicted on November 17, 2025.
– Duration of shower: November 3 through December 2. This time period is when we’re passing through the its meteor stream in space!
– Radiant: Rises around midnight, highest in the sky at dawn. Best seen the two hours before dawn.
– Nearest moon phase: In 2025, the new moon falls at 6:47 UTC on November 20. So the slender waning crescent moon will not interfere with the Leonids in 2025.
– Expected meteors at peak, under ideal conditions: Under a dark sky with no moon, you might see 10 to 15 Leonid meteors per hour.
– Note: The famous Leonid meteor shower produced one of the greatest meteor storms in living memory. Rates were as high as thousands of meteors per minute during a 15-minute span on the morning of November 17, 1966. That night, Leonid meteors did, briefly, fall like rain. Some who witnessed it had a strong impression of Earth moving through space, fording the meteor stream. Leonid meteor storms sometimes recur in cycles of 33 to 34 years. But the Leonids around the turn of the millennium – while wonderful for many observers – did not match the shower of 1966. And, in most years, the Lion whimpers rather than roars.
