ANNUAL HOLIDAY FUNDRAISER

 I can only produce DigameXtra with the financial support of my readers. Once a year, during the year end holidays, I do an 8 week fundraiser to help pay production expenses throughout the whole year. This year’s goal is to receive donations from 4% of subscribers. This “4% Club” finances DigameXtra for the 96% group that don’t donate. Which group will you belong to? The generosity of the 4% Club members is greatly appreciated.

Just like your morning coffee,
what would you do
without your morning DigameXtra?

– Holiday Donation Info, 2 Methods –

DigameXtra subscribers must donate at least €20 (39 cents per week) to gain annual submission posting privileges.

#1. You may drop cash donations off in person and say hello, by appointment, or place them in my mailbox beside my door anytime. Please be sure to include your name on the envelope so I can put you on the list of subscribers with submission posting privileges for 2025-2026! Due to health reasons, unannounced drop-ins are inconvenient for me. But if I am expecting you, no problem! My mailbox has the name HARRIS on it. Email me for map and directions. Cash donations are strongly preferred.
#2. Alternatively, you may send me an Amazon ES (Spain) “eGift card” by email. You need to have an Amazon.es account. The only info you need is my email address and your name (the sender’s name). Remember, this is an “eGift card” you buy that Amazon.es emails directly to me, don’t buy a plain “gift card”. Use the link provided below to access the “eGift card” purchase page.
PLEASE DO NOT SEND AMAZON UK eGIFT CARDS. NO BANK TRANSFERS OR PAYMENT APPS.
Here is the Amazon.es eGift Card Link, (NOTE: YOU CAN CHOOSE ANY AMOUNT YOU LIKE ON THE FORM, THE DEFAULT IS €60):

Para/For : digamextra@protonmail.com

Total Donations Received As Of Today: 27

Target, 4% of subscribers = 200 donations

SPAIN

Self employed workers call national protest to demand dignified working conditions: {Translation, summary}
– Self employed workers across Spain, organised through the Platform for the Dignity of the Self Employed, have called a national protest on Sunday, November 30, to highlight the precarious conditions they face. Under the slogan “Self employed workers suffocated, enough is enough”, they aim to demand fair and dignified working conditions. They warn of the “accelerated disappearance of local shops and the nearby economic network”, calling for an end to bureaucratic obstacles and delays.
– The main demonstration will take place in Madrid and will include the reading of the “National Manifesto of the Self Employed”. This text condemns rising costs and contributions despite falling income, weak social protection compared with employees, delays in the promised VAT exemption for those invoicing under eighty five thousand euros, excessive bureaucracy that obstructs access to aid, and the rapid decline of local shops. Parallel marches will be held in other cities, including Málaga (11am) and Murcia, which will also end with the reading of the manifesto.
– The Platform describes itself as an independent, non profit civic movement giving a voice to the sector. “We are not enemies of the State, we are its engine”. The organisation states that “we are not asking for privileges, we are asking for justice”, and they have called not only self employed workers but also the general public to join them, including families, students and neighbours who see businesses in their towns and neighbourhoods closing down.

Red Eléctrica extends its urgent voltage control measures to avoid another blackout and asks the CNMC to make them permanent: {Translation, summary}
– The CNMC (Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia) has authorised Red Eléctrica to extend for 15 days the urgent voltage control measures introduced after new episodes of sudden voltage swings occurred in late September, five months after April’s major blackout. These temporary measures were first approved on 23 October for one month and may be extended in 15 day periods up to a maximum of three months. Red Eléctrica has already asked for them to become permanent, arguing that voltage fluctuations continue to require intervention at key points of the transmission network.
– The CNMC has asked the operator to propose any necessary regulatory changes and to involve all interested parties, including the electricity companies that own generation plants. These companies previously opposed enabling all renewable plants to participate in voltage control, a measure designed to apply the PO7.4 procedure (“Procedimiento de Operación 7.4”, which is part of Spain’s official electricity system operating rules) across the board, and criticised Red Eléctrica for withholding blackout data. AELEC (Asociación de Empresas de Energía Eléctrica) argues that Spain should return to the standard EU voltage range to provide more reaction margin. The companies also call for urgent installation of planned devices such as reactors and STATCOM units (Static Synchronous Compensator. It is a piece of high-voltage grid equipment used to stabilise the electrical network), noting that only two of the six planned units were in place during the blackout.

Prosecutor’s Office asks for 24 years in prison for Ábalos, 19 and a half for Koldo and 7 for Aldama for the mask plot: {Translation, summary}
– The Anti Corruption Prosecutor has asked the Supreme Court to sentence former Transport Minister José Luis Ábalos {pic} to 24 years in prison and fine him 3.9 million euros for alleged membership of a criminal organisation, bribery, influence peddling, embezzlement and use of privileged information in the Koldo mask case.
– His former adviser Koldo García faces 19 and a half years and the same fine. Both are also asked to compensate Ineco and Tragsatec, and to forfeit more than 430,000 euros in alleged illicit gains.
– Businessman Víctor de Aldama, who has confessed, faces seven years and a slightly lower fine. The Prosecutor describes a long running scheme in which De Aldama secured public contracts in exchange for payments shared with Ábalos and Koldo, who allegedly acted as the former minister’s alter ego. The organisation is said to have operated for years, aided by officials and associates. Far-right uptick in Spain raises spectre of Franco 50 years after his death:
– A spike in support for Spain’s far right is reviving memories of late dictator Francisco Franco and glorifying his legacy among disaffected young Spaniards, even as the left-wing government seeks to eradicate symbols of the fascist past. AI-generated clips of Franco railing against modern ills proliferate on social media along with revisionist history lessons and nightclubs playing techno remixes of Spain’s fascist-era anthem.
– A survey by state-run pollster CIS last month showed that more than one in five (21.3%) of Spaniards saw the Franco era as “good” or “very good” for the country, compared to 11.2% when asked a similar question in 2000. In another CIS poll from July, 17.3% of Spaniards aged 18-24 said they preferred an authoritarian government to a democratic one, a 10-point jump from 2009. {This is a theme I regularly hear from the old Spanish men in the cafe when I go out for my pre-dawn coffee, “Things were better under Franco, more security, less crime, higher standards of living…things were reliable and run by real diplomats and statesmen, now “To’ es confusió, gobernao por bufones” (It’s all confusion, run by clowns). -Ed.} Full article: https://www.reuters.com/world/far-right-uptick-spain-raises-spectre-franco-50-years-after-his-death-2025-11-19/

ANDALUCÍA

Andalusia has 64 outbreaks of scabies in nursing homes this year, 23 of them now active: {Translation, summary}
– The Ministry of Health, Presidency and Emergencies of the Junta de Andalucía has recorded 64 scabies outbreaks in nursing homes so far in 2025, affecting 597 residents, with 23 outbreaks currently active. In 2024, there were also 64 outbreaks, but with a higher number of affected residents, totalling 846. All outbreaks have undergone systematic contact studies, environmental recommendations and weekly monitoring.
– Sources from the Ministry noted that while the year is not over, the number of outbreaks is similar to 2024, though the impact on residents has decreased, a trend attributed to the publication of a protocol in 2024.
– The Federation of Andalusian Organisations of the Elderly (FOAM) has called for a thorough investigation into the causes of the increase, especially in Málaga and Seville, a review of protocols, comparative analysis with other regions, and a public report on measures to reverse the trend. FOAM emphasises the need for transparency and proactive publication of outbreak data to protect nursing home residents. UKRAINE WAR

Ukraine fires two ministers as corruption crisis spreads anger:
– Ukrainian lawmakers fired two ministers ensnared in a major corruption probe on Wednesday and called for more sweeping measures to restore faith in the country’s leadership as the scandal provokes the country’s biggest wartime political crisis. The investigation into an alleged $100 million plot to control contracting at the state nuclear agency has stirred fresh anger at pervasive graft, including in President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s inner circle, as a fourth winter of war approaches.
– Parliament voted to dismiss Justice Minister German Galushchenko, who served as energy minister from 2021 until this year, and his successor, Energy Minister Svitlana Hrynchuk. Both deny wrongdoing in the case. Late on Tuesday, a court ordered a former deputy prime minister into custody on charges related to the case. Previously, five people were arrested and two suspects still at large were charged, including a co-owner of the production company behind the sitcom where Zelenskiy gained fame as a TV star before his election in 2019.
– Opposition forces have demanded a more forceful response to a scandal that has rattled Kyiv’s political class, including the dismissal of the entire government and Zelenskiy’s powerful chief of staff. Some members of Zelenskiy’s Servant of the People party, whose majority has anchored parliament throughout the war, called for “a government of national resilience” and a presidential administration that was “maximally transparent”.
– Corruption allegations are particularly damaging as Ukraine courts critical foreign funds to keep its economy afloat, even as Russian troops are grinding forward on the battlefield. Full article: https://www.reuters.com/world/ukrainian-parliament-sacks-justice-minister-galushchenko-2025-11-19/

UK

UK says ‘military options ready’ as Russian ship uses lasers against RAF pilots:
– British Defence Minister John Healey has stated that military options are prepared if the Russian spy ship Yantar poses a threat, following an incident in which it directed lasers at RAF pilots monitoring the vessel. The Royal Navy and RAF routinely track potential national security threats, with such monitoring missions of Russian ships and submarines increasing since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
– Healey described the laser incident as “deeply dangerous” and said Britain is ready to respond depending on the Yantar’s actions. The ship, designed for intelligence gathering and mapping undersea cables, is currently located north of Scotland near British waters. Healey noted that this is the first instance of the Yantar targeting the RAF and emphasised that the situation is being taken extremely seriously. He has adjusted the navy’s rules of engagement to allow closer monitoring of the Yantar while it operates in UK waters, ensuring military readiness against any potential escalation. Life expectancy in Spain reaches 84.01 years and the gap between men and women is narrower than ever: {Translation, summary}
– In 2024, life expectancy in Spain rose to 84.01 years, an all-time high, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE). Men saw an increase of 0.27 years, reaching 81.38, while women’s life expectancy rose by 0.19 years to 86.53. The gender gap in life expectancy narrowed to just 5.14 years, the smallest on record, down from 7.16 years in the 1990s. For those reaching 65, life expectancy is 19.87 years more for men and 23.64 years for women. In total, 436,118 people died in 2024, a slight decrease of six from the previous year. Notably, deaths among those aged 85-89 declined by 6%. Infant mortality increased to 3.04 deaths per 1,000 live births. The natural population balance showed a negative growth of 116,056 people for the eighth consecutive year. The data was gathered from official health and marriage records in Spain. Private healthcare in Malaga is going on strike for the first time in 30 years with four days of strikes with 80% support: {Translation, summary}
– Private healthcare professionals in Málaga have called a four-day strike, the first in 30 years, affecting around 7,000 workers including doctors, nurses, technicians, administrative staff and orderlies. The strike is scheduled for two hours in the morning and two in the afternoon over 18-19 and 25-26 November, with 80% participation in the first two days, according to CCOO. Workers demand higher wages to reflect the sector’s strong economic performance, claiming large hospital groups such as QuirónSalud, Vithas and HM offer below-inflation increases. The strike also responds to a deadlock in negotiating a new collective agreement and rising work pressure, with excessive shifts that the companies refuse to reduce. Unions highlight that the growth of private healthcare, now with over 500,000 insured and nearly 100 new daily, is largely due to million-euro contracts awarded by the Junta de Andalucía, benefiting QuirónSalud and Vithas. Workers warn the situation affects patients by compromising quality of care. Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/malaga/sanidad-privada-malaga-huelga-cuatro-dias-seguimiento_0_2005264426.html

FINANCIAL

This is the most that a landlord can raise the rent, according to the new INE index: {Translation, summary}
– Spain’s housing situation is worsening as the price per square metre continues to rise, pushing many people into renting despite the fact that rents in large cities are scarcely more affordable than mortgauges, in some cases even greater.
– The National Statistics Institute has updated its reference index, which now permits rent increases for many contracts. The Housing Law was created to contain rental prices and to standardise annual contract updates. Responsibility for the reference index was shifted from the Consumer Price Index to INE to avoid excessive rises linked to inflation.
– INE’s latest update states that rents may rise by up to 2.25 percent for contracts signed after 25 May 2023, the date the law entered into force. This figure for October is 0.03 percent higher than the previous month and the highest rise registered in 2025.
– For contracts signed before 25 May 2023, the new INE index (IRAV) does not automatically apply. Infobae notes that for such contracts, the reference index remains the IPC or the IGC (Índice de Garantía de Competitividad), depending on what was negotiated.
