ANNUAL HOLIDAY FUNDRAISER
I can only produce DigameXtra with the financial support of my readers. Once a year, during the year end holidays, I do an 8 week fundraiser to help pay production expenses throughout the whole year. This year’s goal is to receive donations from 4% of subscribers. This “4% Club” finances DigameXtra for the 96% group that don’t donate. Which group will you belong to? The generosity of the 4% Club members is greatly appreciated.
Just like your morning coffee,
what would you do
without your morning DigameXtra?
– Holiday Donation Info, 2 Methods –
DigameXtra subscribers must donate at least €20 (39 cents per week) to gain annual submission posting privileges.
#1. You may drop cash donations off in person and say hello, by appointment, or place them in my mailbox beside my door anytime. Please be sure to include your name on the envelope so I can put you on the list of subscribers with submission posting privileges for 2025-2026! Due to health reasons, unannounced drop-ins are inconvenient for me. But if I am expecting you, no problem! My mailbox has the name HARRIS on it. Email me for map and directions. Cash donations are strongly preferred.
#2. Alternatively, you may send me an Amazon ES (Spain) “eGift card” by email. You need to have an Amazon.es account. The only info you need is my email address and your name (the sender’s name). Remember, this is an “eGift card” you buy that Amazon.es emails directly to me, don’t buy a plain “gift card”. Use the link provided below to access the “eGift card” purchase page.
PLEASE DO NOT SEND AMAZON UK eGIFT CARDS. NO BANK TRANSFERS OR PAYMENT APPS.
Here is the Amazon.es eGift Card Link, (NOTE: YOU CAN CHOOSE ANY AMOUNT YOU LIKE ON THE FORM, THE DEFAULT IS €60):

Para/For : digamextra@protonmail.com
Please do not ask me about gaining posting privileges by making small donations of under €20, several times a year. Several people promised to do that for each of the last two annual fundraisers, and not a single one followed up.
Total Donations Received As Of Today: 112
Target, 4% of subscribers = 200 donations
***********
FUNDRAISER UPDATE 14/1/26: Due to the weak response to this year’s fundraiser, it will be extended at least until the end of January, longer if necessary. The very modest target is donations from 4% of subscribers, currently the tally is just over 2%. I CAN’T DO MY BEST WORK IF I AM STRUGGLING TO SURVIVE AT WELL UNDER THE POVERTY LEVEL! DoctorLaptop, in these inflationary times, can no longer afford to cover DigameXtra expenses the readership should be paying for. It’s all up to YOU. If you are a daily reader you need to donate today! Thanks again to those that have donated, it is much appreciated!

Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

SPAIN
These are the new features of the updated immigration regulations, although implementation has suffered delays: {Translation}
– A profound transformation in Spanish migration policies is slowly coming into effect with the aim of making it easier for foreign nationals to obtain residence and work permits. According to sources, the new regulations introduce significant changes that seek to facilitate the integration of people in an irregular situation and strengthen family ties with national citizens. Implementation has been delayed due to administrative hurdles and court challenges, but is now being rolled out.
– Among the main new features is the creation of new types of residency permits, designed specifically to enable foreigners in an irregular situation to regularise their legal status and access the labour market. Likewise, the criteria for foreign nationals to change their status from student to work residence, whether self-employed or employed by others, have been made more flexible, simplifying a procedure that was previously more rigid.
– One of the most important pillars of this reform is the creation of the ‘Family member of a Spanish national’ permit. This new permit is aimed at foreigners who can demonstrate a proven relationship of dependency with a Spanish citizen. The regulations allow it to be processed both within the national territory and abroad through the network of consulates, benefiting spouses, common-law partners (including stable unregistered partners), children under the age of 26 — or older if they are dependent on their parents — and parents of any age who are dependent on the Spanish citizen.
– A revolutionary aspect of this change is that, for spouses, partners and children under the age of 26, legal residence and work authorisation are effective from the moment of application to the immigration office, without requiring additional paperwork. Given the complexity of the new requirements, sources stress the importance of analysing each case individually to ensure a successful outcome. The new regulation functions as a master key that not only opens the door to residence but, for many family members, automatically activates the employment machinery from day one. Who Voted For This Lunacy? Mandatory reporting of casual fishing results, photos of your daily catch will be required! The government delays the Big Brother of recreational fishing because the app does not yet exist: {Translation}
– The new mandatory catch reporting requirement via the PescaREC app is for sea fishing only. Freshwater anglers in Spain must comply with the rules and licensing systems of their respective autonomous region, which are separate from this national/EU maritime system.
– The obligation for recreational fishers to declare whether they have caught anything —or if they have returned home with a cool box as empty as their hook— will have to wait, because although the rule has already come into force, the Government’s application is still not available. In fact, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has not yet published the order regulating the monitoring of fishers.
– The system, named PescaREC, came into force on the 10th of January. It requires maritime recreational fishers —those who go out on a Sunday to clear their heads, not to fill a market— to electronically register each catch, each fish returned to the sea, and each unsuccessful outing, including photographs, linked to their fishing licence.
– All of this is in compliance with EU Regulation 2023/2842, which establishes that “reliable catch data relating to certain recreational fishing activities must be collected” to improve the management of marine resources. In practice, the State will also know when one returns home without having caught a single sardine.
– The measure has generated controversy not only because of the control itself, or the impossibility of enforcing it, but due to its impact on thousands of enthusiasts, many of them pensioners, who already have difficulties using applications for basic procedures, let alone having their lives complicated further by being required to upload photos of a sea bream after a morning’s fishing. Going out to enjoy the sea will thus change from being a peaceful activity to becoming just another administrative procedure, with mobile phone, data, prior notifications and confirmations, all in the name of sustainability, of course. ANDALUCÍA
Mammogate Update– The PSOE denounces that the Andalusian Government hides the data of breast cancer screenings: {Translation}
– The socialist parliamentary group has denounced that the Andalusian Government hides the information they have about errors in breast cancer screening. The PSOE deputies had requested for Transparency both the Vice-Ministry of Health and the SAS management direction all the information on the Screening Monitoring Commission, copies of the reports presented at these meetings, a report with the distribution of the provinces and the second tests carried out on women with a Bid-rad 3 rating.
– However, the response of the Andalusian Executive has been to deny that information arguing that this commission is a working group, and therefore there are no minutes of the meetings. In the official response, the Board details that the reports requested by the PSOE “are not public information” but internal documentation. This in addition to detailing that the SAS is not the custodian of the minutes, so it cannot give them to them. The Deputy Ministry of Health also argues that these are personal data that cannot be provided, the same motivation that the spokesperson of the Junta, Carolina Espana, used this Monday to avoid making an assessment of the 22 women affected by errors in the screening program who have developed cancer. TORROX
Civil Guard investigates a person in Torrox for the illegal capture of birds of protected species: {Translation}
– Personnel from the Nature Protection Service (Seprona) of the Civil Guard from Nerja and Vélez Málaga have investigated a person for crimes against wildlife and the use of prohibited trapping devices in Torrox. At the end of last year, information was received concerning an individual who was allegedly carrying out the illegal capture of finch-like birds near a local stream, for their subsequent commercial sale.
– After carrying out a series of actions to ascertain the identity of the perpetrator, the officers learned that this individual resided permanently on one of the two estates where he had installed prohibited trapping devices, meaning he was engaged in this type of activity on a continuous basis.
Four clap nets, one trap-cage containing a live goldfinch as a decoy, and one mist net installed directly in the stream bed where a common greenfinch was trapped were discovered.
– As a result, all the hunting devices he had distributed across the land to carry out the illegal captures were seized, along with another 4 prohibited nets he had stored. These are prohibited, non-selective means, some of which were homemade.
– Furthermore, a total of 38 finch-like birds, consisting of goldfinches {pic}, greenfinches, linnets and common greenfinches, were immediately released back into the wild. These are protected species listed in Annex II of the Bern Convention.
– The person responsible is being investigated for crimes against wildlife for the hunting, possession and destruction of protected species of wild fauna using non-selective and legally prohibited means. CANILLAS DE ALBAIDA (ÁRCHEZ)
A marijuana plantation in Canillas de Albaida has been dismantled: {Translation}
– The Civil Guard has dismantled a plantation of marijuana on a farm located in the town of Canillas de Albaida, in the north-eastern corner of the Axarquia, where they located almost 450 plants. As reported on Tuesday by the Malaga Command, the investigations began when the Team Roca of the Company of Vélez-Málaga became aware of the existence of illegal marijuana cultivation in an isolated rural house in the municipality.
– The various procedures carried out by the investigators revealed that the house had been rented to its tenant for the sole purpose of installing the cultivation of marijuana intended for the drug trafficking. With these indications, the agents requested the corresponding judicial authorisation to carry out an entry and search of the house, which led them to discover the plantation made up of a total of 442 marijuana plants, some of which were already in the process of drying for subsequent distribution, plus 2.4 kilograms buds that had already been processed. For all these reasons, the tenant of the property was arrested for a crime against public health. ALHAURÍN DE LA TORRE
Alhaurín de la Torre will celebrate for three days the feast of its patron saint, San Sebastián: {Translation, summary}
– Alhaurin de la Torre prepares for its three-day Patron Saint festival honouring San Sebastian from 18-20 January. The festivities commence on Sunday the 18th with a popular callos (tripe stew) lunch in the Plaza de Espana, organised by a gastronomic association. On Monday the 19th, 6:30pm, a floral offering will be made at the Parish Church. The main day, Tuesday the 20th, features a solemn mass with a choir, followed by an afternoon procession through the town centre accompanied by the Municipal Band at 5pm. The procession will carry a new, more durable wooden replica of the saint’s image. The council has requested that the public throw flowers at the statue instead of the traditional sugared almonds. EUROPE
Marine Le Pen’s appeal trial opens in Paris, with front-running conservative leader’s 2027 presidential bid at stake:
– France’s far-right leader Marine Le Pen denied any wrongdoing as she appeared in court on Tuesday to appeal an embezzlement conviction, with her 2027 presidential ambitions hanging on the outcome of the case.
– Le Pen, 57, is seeking to overturn a March ruling that found her guilty of misusing European Parliament funds in the hiring of aides from 2004 to 2016. She was given a five-year ban from holding elected office, two years of house arrest with an electronic bracelet, a further two-year suspended sentence and a 100,000-euro ($116,800) fine.
– “I’d like to tell the court that … we did not feel we had committed any offence,” Le Pen told the three-judge panel. She said European Parliament officials did not at the time tell her party that the way it was hiring people was potentially against any rules. “We have never concealed anything,” she added.
– Le Pen was seen as the potential front-runner to succeed President Emmanuel Macron in the 2027 election until last year’s ruling, which sent shock waves through French politics. She denounced it as “a democratic scandal.” Her National Rally party has been coming out on top in opinion polls, and Le Pen alleged that the judicial system brought out “the nuclear bomb” to prevent her from becoming France’s president. UKRAINE WAR
Russia launches another major strike on Ukraine’s power grid in freezing temperatures:
– Russia launched a second major drone and missile bombardment of Ukraine in four days, officials said Tuesday, aiming again at the power grid amid freezing temperatures in an apparent snub to U.S.-led peace efforts as Moscow’s invasion of its neighbour approaches the four-year mark.
– Russia fired almost 300 drones, 18 ballistic missiles and seven cruise missiles at eight regions overnight, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on social media. One strike in the north-eastern Kharkiv region killed four people at a mail depot, and several hundred thousand households were without power in the Kyiv region, Zelenskyy said.
– The daytime temperature in Kyiv, which has endured freezing temperatures for more than two weeks, was -12°C (about 10°F), with streets covered in ice and the rumble of generators heard throughout the capital.
– Four days earlier, Russia also sent hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles in a large-scale overnight attack and, for only the second time in the war, it used a powerful new hypersonic missile that struck western Ukraine in what appeared to be a clear warning to Kyiv’s NATO allies that it won’t back down.
– On Monday, the U.S. accused Russia of a “ dangerous and inexplicable escalation ” of the fighting at a time when the Trump administration is trying to advance peace negotiations.

Immigration raids hit record levels across UK and Scotland:
– Immigration Enforcement activity has reached its highest level on record, with the Home Office reporting sharp increases in raids and arrests targeting illegal working across the UK, including a significant rise in operations in Scotland.
– According to figures released by the Home Office, enforcement teams carried out more than 17,400 raids nationwide between July 2024 and the end of December 2025, a 77 per cent increase compared with the previous period. Arrests rose by 83 per cent over the same timeframe, with more than 12,300 people detained for suspected illegal working.
– In Scotland, Immigration Enforcement teams carried out 695 raids during 2025, leading to 400 arrests. The figures represent a 61 per cent rise in enforcement visits and a 49 per cent increase in arrests compared with 2024, according to the Home Office.
– The Home Office said the increase followed a £5 million funding boost for Immigration Enforcement last year, aimed at expanding activity against employers and workers operating outside the legal system. Officials said raids focused on sectors considered vulnerable to exploitation and non-compliance, including car washes, nail bars, barbers, restaurants and takeaway premises. Iran Protests Death Count Reaches 2000:
– About 2,000 people including security personnel have been killed in protests in Iran, an Iranian official said on Tuesday, the first time authorities have acknowledged the high death toll from an intense crackdown on two weeks of nationwide unrest.
– The Iranian official, speaking to Reuters, said that people he called terrorists were behind the deaths of both protesters and security personnel. The official, who declined to be named, did not give a breakdown of who had been killed.
– The protests began on December 28 over the fall in value of the local currency and have grown into wider demonstrations over dire economic hardships and defiant calls for the fall of the clerical establishment. A rights group had previously identified hundreds of people killed and said that thousands had been arrested. U.S.-based rights group HRANA said that by late Monday 10,721 people had been arrested. Reuters was unable to confirm the figures independently. Rights groups say they have identified by name hundreds of those killed. Opposition groups outside Iran have said the death toll is far higher than the 2,000 estimated by the Iranian official on Tuesday.

WEF’s annual Davos conference begins new era grappling with global order shaken by Trump:
– Business and political elites head to the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos {pic} next week with its vision of a rules-based global economic order being tested to the limits. U.S. President Donald Trump’s expected appearance in the Swiss mountain resort highlights the gap between his agenda and the consensus-driven approach of the WEF, which has faced enduring criticism that it is a talking shop of the rich.
– Dubbing its 56th edition “A Spirit of Dialogue”, the WEF’s leaders say that given the current uncertainty, getting together to map out a way forward in business and politics is crucial.
– “Dialogue is not a luxury, it is a necessity,” said WEF president and CEO Borge Brende, a former Norwegian minister. But others say that with the U.S. and China leveraging power to suit national interests, the WEF risks obsolescence. “Who is going to be making the case for the rules-based international order?” said Daniel Woker, a former Swiss ambassador and foreign relations expert. “To be very blunt, in a system where everyone is only looking out for themselves, it has no reason to exist. It’s an event from the past.” Davos-watchers are also looking at whether the event has lost impetus since its 87-year-old founder Klaus Schwab stepped down as chair last April during a fruitless corruption investigation by the WEF of Schwab’s finances. HEALTH
More than 36 hours of agony in the Emergency Department of the Regional Hospital of Malaga waiting for a bed: {Translation, summary}
– A 78-year-old man spent over 36 hours waiting on a chair in the overcrowded A&E of Malaga’s Regional University Hospital due to a lack of beds, describing the experience as “inhuman.” Admitted with pancreatitis in early January, he was twice sent home to wait. He ultimately returned to the hospital where he waited nearly three days in severe discomfort with no privacy before being admitted to a cardiac ward as that was the only bed available.
– He praises the overstretched staff, who explained wards were closed from lack of personnel. Nursing union Satse confirms this has become the norm, with many patients waiting days for a bed, citing 48 waiting one weekend. They and the Malaga Medical Union attribute delays to bed shortages, staff deficits—with two wards closed—and high patient influx from respiratory viruses.
– For its part, the Regional Hospital reports that the situation recorded that day in the Urgencias area was due to a “specific increase” in healthcare pressure, which was “normalised” after the application of the planned organisational measures. “The centre activated and adjusted the available resources based on demand, guaranteeing safe and quality healthcare at all times,” they claim. {Evidently a 3 day wait for a bed for a patient with acute pancreatitis is now considered acceptable (“normalised”) by hospital administrators. They don’t fix the problem, they move the goalposts. No wonder there are so many assaults on hospital staff, and no surprise they can’t find health workers willing to work in these conditions. SUSFU! -Ed.}

Some Dogs Learn New Words by Eavesdropping on Their Owners: {Summary}
– Clever canines that have a talent for learning vocabulary can pick up new words by simply overhearing their handlers’ conversations, say scientists.
– Parents and dog owners know that some words should not be spoken, but only spelled, to prevent small ears from eavesdropping on the conversation, and previous research has shown that, at the age of 18 months, toddlers can already learn new words by overhearing other people.
– Now a ground-breaking study, published in the journal Science, reveals that a special group of dogs are also able to learn names for objects just by overhearing their owners’ interactions. Similarly to the 18-month-old toddlers, scientists say gifted dogs also excel in learning from both situations of direct speech, and indirect speech.
– The authors suggest that the ability to learn from overheard speech may rely on general “socio-cognitive mechanisms” shared across species, rather than being uniquely tied to human language. But the researchers emphasized that Gifted Word Learner (GWL) dogs are extremely rare, and their “remarkable” abilities likely reflect a combination of individual predispositions and unique life experiences.
– Dr. Dror, lead author on the study, added that the dogs provide an exceptional model for exploring some of the cognitive abilities that enabled humans to develop language. “But we do not suggest that all dogs learn in this way—far from it,” she said.
– The researchers encourage dog owners who believe their dogs know multiple toy names, to contact them at the Genius Dog Challenge Research project at ELTE University in Budapest, Hungary.
