ANNUAL HOLIDAY FUNDRAISER

 I can only produce DigameXtra with the financial support of my readers. Once a year, during the year end holidays, I do an 8 week fundraiser to help pay production expenses throughout the whole year. This year’s goal is to receive donations from 4% of subscribers. This “4% Club” finances DigameXtra for the 96% group that don’t donate. Which group will you belong to? The generosity of the 4% Club members is greatly appreciated.

Just like your morning coffee,
what would you do
without your morning DigameXtra?

– Holiday Donation Info, 2 Methods –

DigameXtra subscribers must donate at least €20 (39 cents per week) to gain annual submission posting privileges.

#1. You may drop cash donations off in person and say hello, by appointment, or place them in my mailbox beside my door anytime. Please be sure to include your name on the envelope so I can put you on the list of subscribers with submission posting privileges for 2025-2026! Due to health reasons, unannounced drop-ins are inconvenient for me. But if I am expecting you, no problem! My mailbox has the name HARRIS on it. Email me for map and directions. Cash donations are strongly preferred.
#2. Alternatively, you may send me an Amazon ES (Spain) “eGift card” by email. You need to have an Amazon.es account. The only info you need is my email address and your name (the sender’s name). Remember, this is an “eGift card” you buy that Amazon.es emails directly to me, don’t buy a plain “gift card”. Use the link provided below to access the “eGift card” purchase page.
PLEASE DO NOT SEND AMAZON UK eGIFT CARDS. NO BANK TRANSFERS OR PAYMENT APPS.
Here is the Amazon.es eGift Card Link, (NOTE: YOU CAN CHOOSE ANY AMOUNT YOU LIKE ON THE FORM, THE DEFAULT IS €60):
https://www.amazon.es/Cheques-Regalo-Amazon-es-mail-Amazon/dp/B07SS5PFJK/?th=1&gpo=60
On the eGift card purchase form, enter the DigameXtra email as the recipient, as shown below in Spanish and with English translation.
Para/For : digamextra@protonmail.com

Please do not ask me about gaining posting privileges by making small donations of under €20, several times a year. Several people promised to do that for each of the last two annual fundraisers, and not a single one followed up.

Total Donations Received As Of Today: 113

Target, 4% of subscribers = 200 donations

***********

Due to the weak response to this year’s fundraiser, it will be extended until the end of January. This will give readers who have been out of town for the holidays a chance to get their donations in. The very modest target is donations from 4% of subscribers, currently the tally is just over 2%. Thanks again to those that have donated, it is much appreciated!

SPAIN

Davos Forum declares greatest threats to Spain are social polarisation, shortage of talent & lack of labour: {Translation, summary}
– The World Economic Forum, known as the Davos Forum, published the 2026 Global Risks Report on Wednesday as a prelude to next week’s meeting that will bring together the economic and political elite in Switzerland. They warn that social polarisation is already emerging as the main threat to Spain in a context marked by political fragmentation.
– In second place is the shortage of talent and the lack of labour, to which is added “insufficient” public services and social protection. specifically citing areas such as pensions, education and infrastructure. This is a wake-up call to the current government, which usually boasts of economic management and promoting the Welfare State. The list is completed by debt, which includes public, corporate and family, in addition to the lack of opportunities economic and unemployment. The summit on regional financing ends with the rejection of all the communities except Catalonia– After more than four hours of “presentation of a power point, Montero has only convinced Catalonia, for which this model has been made”: {Translation}
– The summit on the new system of regional financing proposed by the Government, held between Vice President María Jesús Montero {pic} and the regional Councillors for Economic Affairs within the Council for Fiscal and Financial Policy (CPFF), ended with the general rejection of the proposal by all the regions, both those governed by the Popular Party and the Socialists, except for Catalonia.
– All the economic Councillors, except for Alicia Romero of the PSC, expressed their outright rejection of the proposal. The Madrid Councillor, Rocío Albert, warned that the system would not advance in Congress, since the law regulating it would not receive sufficient support, given that “it does not even have the backing of its Government partners, nor the agreement of the investiture allies, nor that of any autonomous community except Catalonia. How is such an agreement to be approved?”, asked the Madrid Councillor.
– Albert ironically expressed her surprise “that Junqueras did not preside over this Council himself to present his model. He sent Montero to whitewash it. We shall not support a system in which Madrid contributes 83% more than it receives. We neither accept it nor shall we finance it, and we shall use all our legal means to ensure that it does not go ahead.”
– The Councillor from Murcia, Luis Alberto Marín, reproached the Minister, saying that “after four hours of PowerPoint, Montero has only convinced Catalonia, for whom this model was designed. It is very telling that over 95% of the regions represented in this Council for Fiscal and Financial Policy have shown our total rejection of a model that fails to solve funding problems, that is flawed from birth, created through bilateral relations with the separatists and secessionists.”
– In contrast, the Councillor for Economy and Finance of the Government of Catalonia, Alicia Romero (PSC), defended that the new model benefits all regions that were suffering from a situation of underfunding, thus denying that it is an agreement based on “a lack of solidarity” or “inequality” that would benefit only Catalonia. ANDALUCÍA

Andalucia rejects Montero’s financing model for being a “tailor-made suit” for the independence movement and “without negotiation”: {Translation, summary}
– The Andalucian government, via its Minister Carolina España, has fiercely rejected the new regional financing model presented by Spain’s Finance Minister María Jesús Montero. Andalucia condemns the proposal as “arbitrary, opaque, and unjust,” characterising it as “caviar and champagne for the independence movement” at the expense of other regions like theirs.
– Key criticisms include the perceived “disloyalty” of negotiating bilaterally only with the Catalan pro independence party ERC, a lack of clear information and documentation provided, and the application of a favourable “bespoke” funding criterion for wealthier Catalonia.
– España accuses Montero of acting under electoral pressure from Andalucia’s upcoming vote and pressure from the government’s Catalan partners, prioritising political survival over equitable financing for all Spaniards. – In this year 2026, nearly 30,000 people will participate in the eleven sports circuits organised by the Diputación de Málaga. These circuits, some with four decades of history, are held throughout the year in all the regions of the province with more than 200 sports events. In the last edition, about 70 municipalities participated.

– This Saturday the cycling and petanque circuits will start in Mijas and Torrox, and on Sunday swimming will begin in Vélez-Málaga, athletics in Coín and cycling in Istán.
– These circuits are open to people of all ages, from schoolchildren to the elderly, and both experienced athletes and those who are starting out in the different sports modalities can participate. Source, Spanish: https://www.teleprensa.com/articulo/…

TORROX

The historic restaurant in Torrox Costa La Pataleta reopens thanks to Verano Azul TV series: {Translation, summary}
– Jesús Mulero, a Catalan chef long enamoured with Málaga since his childhood viewing of Verano Azul, has realised his dream by opening La Pataleta Restaurant, Avenida de España 7, in Torrox Costa. Trained at the Bellart School and seasoned by international experience with Singular Hotel, he later founded a boutique hotel in Segovia before deciding to settle permanently in Málaga.
– La Pataleta combines a restaurant, gastrobar, chillout area, and takeaway service, employing up to ten people in high season and seating 130 guests. It will open every day, except Mondays. Every Saturday there will be concerts, monologues or shows. In addition, it will give up its space for exhibitions and meetings. Its cuisine focuses on meats and rice dishes inspired by Spanish tradition and Mulero’s travels, offering creations such as oxtail rice with wild mushrooms. Decorated in Mediterranean blue and white, La Pataleta also includes space for art and live entertainment, aiming to become a cultural hub. Mulero plans to live above the restaurant, declaring Málaga his final home and source of inspiration. RINCÓN DE LA VICTORIA

One step closer to a new health centre in Rincón de la Victoria: {Translation, summary}
– The Andalusian Government must choose among ten bids for the construction of the new health centre in Rincón de la Victoria, a 15.2-million-euro project covering 7,400 square metres over four floors and a basement. The building, four times larger than the current facility, will include 44 consulting rooms and services such as Rehabilitation, Minor Surgery, Dentistry, Radiology and Mental Health. The plot, provided by the Town Council in Huerta Julián, spans 3,800 square metres and will also include car parks.
– The Town Council and the Andalusian Health Service formalised cooperation in 2021, and the basic design was awarded to San Cecilio Studio and Fresneda & Zamora Arquitectura. Construction is expected to last 22 months. Regional Minister Antonio Sanz confirmed a 2-million-euro budget allocation for 2026. Mayor Francisco Salado welcomed the project, noting it fulfils residents’ long-standing demand for a facility suited to the town’s 50,000 inhabitants. UK

Government drops plans for mandatory digital ID to work in UK:
– The government has dropped plans requiring workers to sign up to a new digital ID system in order to prove their right to work in the UK. Instead, Labour ministers say existing checks, using documents such as biometric passports, will move fully online by 2029.
– Speaking at Prime Minster’s Questions, the Tory leader welcomed the government’s climbdown, branding the initial digital ID plan a “rubbish policy”. But she said the change of approach showed Sir Keir was “blowing around like a plastic bag in the wind”, predicting that Labour would next U-turn on its controversial plans to scale back jury trials.
– Nearly three million people have signed a parliamentary petition opposing the introduction of digital IDs. Full article: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c3385zrrx73o

– Davidovich, the tournament’s number one seed, easily overcame Hijikata in one hour and 23 minutes of play. Davidovich will face in the quarterfinals Valentin Vacherot who passed the second round without having compete due to the retirement of Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis. GASTRONOMIA

A family-run grill in Malaga with over 40 years of history tucked away inside a house– ‘Many people don’t know about it.’: {Translation}
– Inside a house in the Málaga neighbourhood of Arroyo de Los Ángeles lies one of the finest grills in the entire country, with over 40 years of specialisation in charcoal grilled meats.
“We have a selection of tender, juicy cuts of meat, cooked on our barbecue with authentic holm oak charcoal to highlight their natural flavour,” say the team at La Casamata restaurant, a business set up in an old casa mata (slaughterhouse) which opened its doors in 1984.
– The business whose experience working with quality meats has established it as one of Málaga’s best grills, which led to them attending the 2024 Master Grillmasters Championship in Zarautz, representing the province of Málaga.
– “There are many people in Málaga who still do not know this grill that is inside a house,” note its own customers, who highlight the different cuts of meat and wines that can be enjoyed at this family restaurant located at number 11 Alcalde Ronquillo Street.
– Thus, in its two dining rooms and its terrace, La Casamata offers a wide variety of special meats, such as the ‘Casamata Selection’, with “the best cuts”, the ‘Asturiana’, raised in the mountains of Asturias, the ‘Vasca Premium’, “raised on small farms” or the ‘Avileña Ibérica’, with “a deep, authentic flavour and yellow fat”. Furthermore, customers can enjoy chicken dishes like their skewers, wings or kebabs; or their pork as chops, loin, ribs and acorn fed Iberian secreto. Its menu also highlights its grain fed Angus beef entrecôte, acorn fed Iberian presa, beef sirloin or Angus offal.
– To these are added their suckling lamb and fresh quails; their salads, scrambled dishes, chorizos, black puddings, beef chistorras, vegetables and croquettes, and one of their main attractions: their cheese and pâté boards. “In 1991 we decided to join the roots of Morocco with our culture, so we added Arabic food to the menu like couscous, pastilla, lamb skewers and our Moorish tea,” say the staff of this business which, despite the years, maintains its “essence” and its constant pursuit of offering the highest quality to its clientele. HEALTH

Doctors return to strike action: {Translation, summary}
– The Professional Association for a Medical and Faculty Statute, made up of about fifteen medical unions from all over Spain, has called a new two-day strike of doctors for this Wednesday and Thursday to protest against the Framework Statute that the Ministry of Health is negotiating with the majority unions in the health field and for which a verbal pre-agreement was reached on December 15, which avoided a strike initially called for the end of this month by all the staff of the National Health System.
– The medical unions CESM and SMA, responsible for the four consecutive days of strikes by healthcare workers last December, support these new mobilizations without joining them. However, all these medical unions have joined forces in a common front and are preparing new protests for February, not ruling out an indefinite strike by all, with the aim of increasing pressure on the government and regional authorities to achieve specific legal status for these professionals. Source, Spanish: https://www.20minutos.es/nacional/los-medicos-vuelven-huelga-durante-dos-dias-para-exigir-sanidad-un-estatuto-propio_6920886_0.html

The strike committee leaves the meeting with the Department of Health after rejecting the preliminary agreement reached on Monday with the trade unions: {Translation, summary}
– A critical meeting between Spain’s Ministry of Health and striking medical unions collapsed in under an hour, exposing a total negotiation breakdown.
– The unions (CESM and SMA) rejected the Ministry’s sole offer to join a pre-agreement made with other unions, demanding instead a specific medical statute. They accuse the Ministry of bad faith, claiming it declared negotiations over from the start, having already secured a separate deal.
– The phrase “already secured a separate deal” refers to the verbal pre-agreement reached on Monday between the Ministry of Health (led by Mónica García) and the other trade unions that form part of the official Negotiating Scope (Ámbito de Negociación). These other unions are specifically named as: SATSE-FSES; FSS-CCOO; UGT; CSIF; and
CIG-Saúde. This pre-agreement included key concessions like the 35-hour work week and changes to retirement rules. The striking medical unions (CESM and SMA) were not part of these Monday negotiations. During the Wednesday meeting, the Ministry presented joining this pre-existing deal as its only offer to the strikers, who rejected it as insufficient and not addressing their core demand for a separate statute. The striking unions therefore interpreted the Ministry’s position as having already settled matters with a different group, leaving no real room for negotiation with them.
– The Ministry, conversely, accuses the unions of confrontation for abandoning talks and refusing its proposal, which included a 35-hour week and other benefits. The core dispute is structural: the unions insist on a parallel, profession-specific negotiation, which the Ministry refuses. With no resolution, the unions are now planning escalated nationwide mobilisations and a potential indefinite national strike, deepening the conflict over healthcare working conditions. Movistar, Vodafone and Orange raise tariffs by an average of 4% in January, this is how prices look for 2026: {Translation, summary}
– In January 2026, Spain’s three major telecom operators, Movistar, Vodafone, and Orange, are implementing above-inflation tariff increases averaging 4.74%, significantly higher than the previous year’s 2.93%. The hikes, justified by rising costs for content, technology, and network investment, disproportionately affect convergent packages bundling fibre, mobile, and TV.
– Movistar’s increases average 4%, with specific rises of 1-4 euros on various TV and sports add-ons, though its basic package remains unchanged. Vodafone has abandoned its CPI-linked formula, introducing rises of 1-5 euros depending on services, with an extra euro for packages including Disney+. Orange is raising its convergent packs by 5-6 euros. All companies cite streaming platform price hikes and infrastructure investment as drivers, while offering minor compensatory enhancements like more data or faster speeds. Hallucinations enter sensitive territory- Google gave erroneous medical information in its AI searches: {Translation, summary}
– The system provided dangerously inaccurate advice, including incorrect normal ranges for liver function tests, risking patients dismissing abnormal results and delaying care. For pancreatic cancer, it recommended avoiding fatty foods, contradicting standard clinical advice for high calorie diets to prevent weight loss. Errors also appeared in cancer screening information for women, potentially leading to missed diagnoses.
– These are not trivial mistakes but “hallucinations” where the AI generates plausible sounding falsehoods. The episode exposes the fundamental flaw of generative AI: it completes patterns rather than validating facts. This is particularly perilous in healthcare, where unreliable information can directly harm patients. Google’s errors on health queries highlights the severe challenges and ethical risks of automating sensitive information without robust safeguards. Saks Global files for bankruptcy after Neiman Marcus takeover leads to financial collapse:
– High-end department store conglomerate Saks Global filed for bankruptcy protection late on Tuesday in one of the largest retail collapses since the pandemic, barely a year after a deal intended to create a luxury ‌powerhouse brought Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus under the same roof. The filing cast uncertainty over the future of the iconic U.S. luxury fashion brand, though Saks said early on Wednesday that its stores would remain open for now after it finalized a $1.75 billion financing package and appointed a new chief executive.
– The court process is meant to give the luxury retailer room to negotiate a debt restructuring with creditors or find a new owner. Failing that, the company may be forced to shutter. The company, in ‍its filing, said demand is not the problem.
– Saks Global has about 17,000 employees. Persistent missed vendor payments and inventory disruptions left the company with severe liquidity constraints heading into 2026, it said. The thinly stocked shelves may have driven shoppers away ‍to rivals like Bloomingdale’s, which reported strong sales in 2025, compounding pressure on Saks Global.
“Rich people are still buying,” Morningstar analyst David Swartz said last month, “just not so much at Saks.” Full article: https://www.reuters.com/business/retail-consumer/saks-global-files-bankruptcy-after-neiman-marcus-takeover-leads-financial-2026-01-14/
