ANNUAL HOLIDAY FUNDRAISER
I can only produce DigameXtra with the financial support of my readers. Once a year, during the year end holidays, I do an 8 week fundraiser to help pay production expenses throughout the whole year. This year’s goal is to receive donations from 4% of subscribers. This “4% Club” finances DigameXtra for the 96% group that don’t donate. Which group will you belong to? The generosity of the 4% Club members is greatly appreciated.
Just like your morning coffee,
what would you do
without your morning DigameXtra?
– Holiday Donation Info, 2 Methods –
DigameXtra subscribers must donate at least €20 (39 cents per week) to gain annual submission posting privileges.
#1. You may drop cash donations off in person and say hello, by appointment, or place them in my mailbox beside my door anytime. Please be sure to include your name on the envelope so I can put you on the list of subscribers with submission posting privileges for 2025-2026! Due to health reasons, unannounced drop-ins are inconvenient for me. But if I am expecting you, no problem! My mailbox has the name HARRIS on it. Email me for map and directions. Cash donations are strongly preferred.
#2. Alternatively, you may send me an Amazon ES (Spain) “eGift card” by email. You need to have an Amazon.es account. The only info you need is my email address and your name (the sender’s name). Remember, this is an “eGift card” you buy that Amazon.es emails directly to me, don’t buy a plain “gift card”. Use the link provided below to access the “eGift card” purchase page.
PLEASE DO NOT SEND AMAZON UK eGIFT CARDS. NO BANK TRANSFERS OR PAYMENT APPS.
Here is the Amazon.es eGift Card Link, (NOTE: YOU CAN CHOOSE ANY AMOUNT YOU LIKE ON THE FORM, THE DEFAULT IS €60):
https://www.amazon.es/Cheques-Regalo-Amazon-es-mail-Amazon/dp/B07SS5PFJK/?th=1&gpo=60
On the eGift card purchase form, enter the DigameXtra email as the recipient, as shown below in Spanish and with English translation.
Para/For : digamextra@protonmail.com
Please do not ask me about gaining posting privileges by making small donations of under €20, several times a year. Several people promised to do that for each of the last two annual fundraisers, and not a single one followed up.
Total Donations Received As Of Today: 124
Target, 4% of subscribers = 200 donations
This year’s fundraiser will be extended until the end of January. This will give readers who have been out of town for the holidays a chance to get their donations in. The very modest target is donations from 4% of subscribers, currently the tally is just over 2.4%. Thanks again to those that have donated, it is much appreciated!

SPAIN
Train drivers call for a nationwide general strike after the accidents in Adamuz and Barcelona: {Translation, summary}
– Spanish train drivers have announced a general strike after two serious derailments in Adamuz and Gelida that caused at least 43 deaths, including three drivers, and nearly 200 injuries. The strike was called by SEMAF, the main drivers’ union, to demand guarantees of safety and reliability across the railway network.
– The union describes a continuing deterioration of the system and urges authorities, infrastructure managers and operators to take urgent action. SEMAF has stated that it will seek criminal responsibility from those responsible for infrastructure safety. Drivers will not allow the resumption of suburban and medium distance services in Catalonia until safety is fully verified, and Rodalies services remain suspended. They are also calling for network wide suspensions in similar risk situations. Before each journey, drivers will require safety guarantees and apply preventive speed reductions where necessary. SEMAF also advises drivers affected by emotional shock to report their inability to work. Sánchez provides €755 million in funding for the modernization of Morocco’s railways while Spain’s train network suffers multiple fiascos: {Translation, summary}
– Pedro Sánchez’s government has been financing railway projects abroad while allowing Spain’s own network to decay, endangering passenger safety. Last Sunday’s tragic accident in Adamuz, Córdoba, has reignited criticism over his mismanagement of public funds and infrastructure.
– Spain provides “repayable” loans to countries such as Morocco and Egypt, conditioned on awarding contracts to Spanish companies, effectively using public money to subsidise foreign projects. In February 2025, Sánchez approved a 755 million euro loan to Morocco for 40 intercity trains, following his 2024 visit where he claimed Spain would invest 45,000 million euros in the country. Spanish officials later insisted the funds were loans, not investments, but the arrangement highlights a controversial prioritisation of foreign contracts over domestic rail safety. Previous loans, including 190 million euros for Casablanca tram lines, were never executed, while Spain continues to fund Egypt’s Cairo Metro modernisation, exposing a pattern of exporting public funds abroad at the expense of national infrastructure. The Socialist PSOE administration focused its efforts on launching the new hybrid train while real investment in track maintenance fell: {Translation, summary}
– Over the past decade, Spain’s high-speed rail network has grown by more than 800 kilometres, yet investment in maintenance has not kept pace. Nominal spending has increased slightly, but relative to network growth and inflation, it has fallen sharply, creating a significant maintenance deficit. In 2015, maintenance expenditure per million euros of railway assets was 33,302, falling to 27,970 by 2024, a nominal decline of 16%. Adjusted for 26.5% inflation over the period, real spending dropped to approximately 22,110 euros, a real decrease of 33.6%.
– Although the total network and the value of infrastructure have grown — the network increased by 834 kilometres and the total infrastructure value rose by 2,338 million euros, a 15% increase — maintenance funding has not scaled accordingly. As a result, investment per kilometre of track has declined, and the purchasing power of maintenance budgets has eroded. This combination of expanded infrastructure and insufficient real-term investment explains the widespread deterioration of service and highlights the urgent need for proportional, inflation-adjusted maintenance funding. MALAGA PROVINCE
Malaga activates yellow alert during a week of rain, wind, and falling temperatures: {Translation, summary}
– Weather instability is returning to Málaga. After a short respite from rainfall, precipitation will return across the entire province from Wednesday afternoon onwards, continuing throughout the week and even into the beginning of the following one.
– Aemet territorial director in Málaga, Jesús Riesco, states that this accumulation of rainfall is due to the successive passage of several Atlantic low pressure systems, such as Storm Harry, which will move southwards and bring rain to large areas of the province.
– Wind will be a key feature throughout the week, with gusts of up to 70 kilometres per hour producing waves between 2 and 3 metres high, according to the director. These winds have triggered a yellow alert for coastal phenomena today and tomorrow along the Axarquía coast, and from tomorrow on the Costa del Sol.
– As for temperatures, Riesco explains that they will remain stable across the province. However, on Saturday there will be a significant drop of around 5 degrees compared with the rest of the week, both before and after, on the coast and inland. This will result in minimum temperatures of 9 degrees and maximums of 13 degrees in the capital. Similar figures are expected in Coín, with highs of 13 degrees and lows of 6. In Antequera, temperatures will fall to a minimum of 3 degrees and a maximum of 8. Ronda will record some of the lowest temperatures in the province, with minimums of 1 degree and maximums of 5. Temperatures are expected to rise again from Sunday onwards. Source, Spanish: https://www.laopiniondemalaga.es/malaga/2026/01/21/malaga-activa-alerta-amarilla-semana-125913869.html

Student sets fire to an apartment in Seville to kill the old woman she was caring for: {Translation, summary}
– A young woman has been arrested in Seville for allegedly setting fire to a flat in which the elderly woman she was caring for later died. The suspect, an Algerian national who was studying in the city, lived with the victim, an 80 year old woman, as part of a university support programme. According to the investigation, an argument took place after the elderly woman attempted to expel her from the home, following which the carer allegedly set the property on fire. The blaze occurred in the early hours of 14 January and was contained by firefighters before spreading to nearby homes. The victim suffered severe burns and smoke inhalation, went into cardiorespiratory arrest, and later died in hospital. Police determined the fire was deliberate and arrested the suspect, who now faces charges of homicide and arson and has been remanded in custody. Football News- German MPs ‘to propose’ World Cup boycott over Trump threats to EU:
– A senior CDU MP, a prominent voice in Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s party, has raised the prospect of European teams staying away from the World Cup if Donald Trump pursues threats over Greenland and a trade war with the EU, shifting boycott talk from the leftist opposition into Berlin’s government. According to Augsburger Allgemeine, Roderich Kiesewetter said participation would be unthinkable in those circumstances. Government sources told AFP that any decision on taking part would be for the German FA, the DFB, rather than politicians.
– The Social Democrats, Merz’s coalition partners, have also aired concerns about supporter safety. Aydan Özoguz said the conditions under which matches would be played are unclear and suggested travel to the United States could be complex, adding it might be hard to stage games peacefully while threats against Europe run in parallel. The Merz government could still opt for a diplomatic boycott, meaning no minister or head of state would attend matches, a role often filled by the interior minister, the chancellor or the president.
– The tournament is scheduled for 11 June to 19 July across the United States, Mexico and Canada, adding complexity to any stance. Full article: https://onefootball.com/id/berita/german-mps-to-propose-world-cup-boycott-over-trump-threats-to-eu-42268696
GASTRONOMIA
Miura, the cherry liqueur named after a bull that is the symbol of a town in Seville: {Translation, summary}
– In Andalucian dining rooms, especially in winter when the cold bites, it is not unusual for a bottle of Miura to appear, the cherry liqueur that has become emblematic of Cazalla de la Sierra, a town in the northern Sierra of Seville. Its sweet, fruity flavour with a hint of anise, together with its centuries-old history, makes it an inevitable presence at the table.
– Miura’s origins lie in the old convent of San Francisco de los Diezmos, founded in the fifteenth century in what is now Cazalla de la Sierra. The Franciscan monks produced wines and spirits there. Over time, the recipe was enriched with fruits, particularly cherries, and spread through Cazalla, where many households developed their own distilling traditions. The Mendizábal disentailment in the 1830s forced the monks to leave, and their properties were transferred to the parish and local public use. The distillery changed owners several times, eventually uniting under Destilerías de Cazalla in 1869. The Miura brand was later acquired by a local cooperative, adopting a bull by a fence as its symbol.
– Today, Miura is produced using centuries-old stills combined with modern technology, preserving tradition while serving as a gastronomic emblem of the Sierra. Each sip carries the creative spirit of the monks and the enduring passion of a historic family enterprise. A mother arrested in Malaga after her baby tested positive for cannabis due to breastfeeding: {Translation, summary}
– A 24 year old woman was arrested in Málaga after her four month old baby was hospitalised with respiratory problems and found to have cannabis in his system. Medical tests indicated that the substance had been transmitted through breastfeeding, and the mother admitted to consuming cannabis during that period. Police investigations into the family environment confirmed regular drug use by the parents. The woman was charged with an alleged offence of causing injury through gross negligence and later released after police procedures were completed. Judicial authorities and the Andalusian child protection services were notified, and temporary care of the infant was granted to the grandmother. The baby spent eleven days in hospital, including time in intensive care, and was discharged after showing a positive medical recovery. Photo for illustrative purposes only. If your cell phone starts doing this, it means you are being spied on without your knowledge: {Translation, summary}
– Modern mobile phones store large amounts of sensitive personal information, making privacy a growing concern. The risk of hacking or digital spying has increased as cybercriminals use sophisticated methods to obtain passwords and financial data. Several warning signs may indicate that a device is compromised. Rapid battery drain can suggest spyware operating in the background, possibly accessing the camera without permission. A camera light activating unexpectedly may point to unauthorised surveillance. Sluggish performance, unexplained freezes and system instability can also result from malicious software interfering with normal operation. Another serious warning sign is the appearance of unknown applications that the user does not recall installing, which may indicate unauthorised access. Regularly checking installed apps, monitoring unusual behaviour and taking appropriate security precautions are essential steps to protect personal data and maintain privacy on mobile devices.
