SPAIN
Brussels demands that Spain “guarantee” that its regularisation of immigrants does not harm the rest of the EU: {Translation, summary}
– The EU authorities on Tuesday went a step beyond their initial assessment of the Spanish government’s controversial plan to extraordinarily regularize half a million immigrants, an initiative on which Brussels maintained that it fell within the competences of each EU partner. This time they have called the attention of Pedro Sánchez’s government to ensure that its application will not have “negative consequences” in the rest of the club’s member countries, for example, that people who receive a residence permit do not later settle in another State of the Union.
– “Migration is a shared challenge between Member States and the European Union (…). Some matters remain the responsibility of the States themselves, but at the same time that responsibility means that each member must ensure that its decisions do not have negative consequences in other parts of the European Union. It is a general principle of our Union,” said the European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner {pic}, during a debate dedicated to regularisation in Spain in the plenary session of the European Parliament. In this sense, he warned that there are “clear rules” that must be taken into account when promoting national regularization plans, for example, that if a beneficiary of the measure is detected residing illegally in another member state “he must return to the country where the permit was granted.”
– The debate on extraordinary regularisation in Spain and its consequences for the rest of the borderless Schengen area featured dozens of interventions this Tuesday from both Spanish MEPs and those from other countries, revealing two clearly opposing positions. On one side, a firm defence of the measure adopted by the Spanish coalition Government from Socialists, Greens and the left; on the other, strong criticism both from the European People’s Party (EPP) benches and from the far-right groups, Patriots for Europe and the European Conservatives and Reformists. In Related News, Adding Insult To Injury– The Government proposes to the European Commission to facilitate the distribution of migrants from the Canary Islands to other European countries: {Translation, summary}
– The Spanish Government has submitted proposals to the European Commission to facilitate the redistribution of migrant minors and the referral of migrants from the Canary Islands towards the European continent. Minister Carlos Cuerpo {pic} confirmed the measures during Congressional questions in response to Coalición Canaria deputy Cristina Valido. The aim, he stated, is to avoid the “overconcentration” of migrant population in the outermost regions. The proposals form part of a wider effort to strengthen the Canaries’ status as an outermost region.
– Valido had earlier demanded a joint coordination committee between the Ministry of Economy and the Canarian Government to review compliance with the region’s economic and fiscal regime, and requested access to taxation data. No migration-specific figures or timelines were provided. The Minister emphasised that the Spanish Government considers the unique nature of the Canaries and is contributing record resources and European funds to the region’s development. Sánchez admits “significant” shortcomings in the railway network and Feijóo predicts that the Government “will sit in the dock”: {Translation, summary}
– During a Congressional appearance following fatal rail accidents at Adamuz (45 dead) and Gelida, Pedro Sánchez admitted “significant deficiencies” in the railway network but insisted the specific track met rigorous standards, was comprehensively renewed in 2025 with €780 million investment, and that protocols are not infallible. He pledged to honour victims and deliver justice if investigations warrant. – Alberto Núñez Feijóo accused the Government of sustained negligence resulting in death, predicted criminal proceedings, and demanded resignations from Sánchez and Transport Minister Óscar Puente. Feijóo cited warnings from multiple European institutions which were ignored. Santiago Abascal also blamed the Executive, calling the accident a “crime”, expecting court appearances, and linking the tragedy to alleged corruption within the Transport Ministry. Sánchez defended his record, citing increased investment and reduced accident rates despite network extensiveness. The Junta observes with caution the evolution of the roads- “When the ground dries out, the earth will move”: {Translation, summary}
– Andalusian Regional Minister Rocío Díaz reported that damage to regional roads following recent storms exceeds 500 million euros. She stated the government remains “expectant”, monitoring terrain movements as the ground dries, as new damage may occur as waters drain away.
– Five hundred technical staff are deployed assessing damage. Currently, 38 regional roads are fully closed and 110 partially affected, with Cadiz province worst hit. The Minister emphasised continuous efforts, day and night, to provisionally reopen routes and prevent municipal isolation, summarising the approach: “Anticipation has led us to more effective work”. Andalucia estimates the damage to Andalucian roads due to the storm at 535 million euros and activates a shock plan: {Translation, summary}
– Andalusia’s regional government has warned that losses from the train of storms battering the region since 27th January will reach billions of euros. Agricultural production alone has fallen by an estimated 20%, representing over 3.5 billion euros in losses, with infrastructure repair costs to follow.
– More than 600 serious incidents have occurred on 50 regional roads, the Development Minister confirmed Wednesday. The provinces of Cadiz and Malaga have been worst affected, with the Serranía de Ronda area particularly hit and some towns left isolated. Currently, 47 roads remain fully closed and 117 partially closed.
– The government has allocated 260 million euros for urgent road repairs, with 107 million destined for Cadiz and 47 million for Malaga. A further 275 million euros is planned for asphalt and surface reinforcement. Some 500 personnel continue working around the clock. Thermometers jump by six degrees in Malaga, to over 24 degrees: {Translation, summary}
– In a matter of two days, the rainfall is gone and, as if waiting behind the door, our 20-plus degrees have arrived. Six degrees more at once, until the thermometers were over 24. Although an exception is Serranía de Ronda, where it has not yet stopped raining, with greater or lesser intensity, for more than ten days in some cases, and where the maximum remains at just over 15 degrees.
– Although temperatures began to rise on Monday, already with more than 23 degrees in places such as Coín, Rincón de la Victoria and Vélez-Málaga, the peak of the heat forecast this week took place this Wednesday. The capital and Vélez-Málaga were the two points in the province where the rise was most noticeable: 24.4 degrees, reached at 12:30 p.m. in the Axarquia municipality and at 3:20 p.m. at the airport. This was the second highest temperature in Andalusia during the day, behind the 25.5 they had in Garrucha (Almeria). They ask for help to identify a woman whose remains were found in a suitcase in Malaga three years ago: {Translation, summary}
– The Civil Guard seeks public assistance to identify a woman whose skeletal remains were discovered inside a semi-buried suitcase in Benahavís in 2023. A gardener made the discovery. Calahonda beach in Nerja will gain a sandy surface with the reorganisation of its access: {Translation, summary}

This action will mean a significant improvement to this emblematic beach located next to the Balcón de Europa.
– For her part, the Councillor for Beaches, María del Carmen López , explained that the new access will start from the current one, at the end of the descent of the Calahonda gap, with a soft staircase that will maintain the aesthetic elements such as almond stone , and that it will be developed parallel to the hammock service area of the beach. Almost 300 trains cancelled on the last day of the railway strike: {Translation, summary}
– The final day of rail strikes, maintained by minority unions, caused widespread disruption across Spain, with particular impact in Andalucia and Malaga. Renfe cancelled approximately 200 commuter services nationwide, with Malaga’s Cercanías network specifically affected. The Alferro union reported a “long list” of cancelled trains in Malaga due to driver shortages, alongside incidents in Cadiz. Regional and medium-distance services suffered fifty cancellations, with special incidence in Andalucia and Galicia. High-speed services were also disrupted, though private operators Ouigo and Iryo maintained limited service with displaced passengers rebooked or refunded. Renfe reported strike participation of only 1.9%, the lowest of the three-day action, but acknowledged that the absence of certain workers created a cascade effect on multiple services. The company continues working to rebook affected passengers. Minimum service requirements were revoked nationally except in the Basque Country. More train criticism of yet another train derailment- silence of information in the face of the derailment of a train “with dangerous goods” in Irún: {Translation, summary}
– The PP group in the Basque Parliament criticised on Tuesday the “silence” of the Basque Government after the derailment last Friday of a train “with dangerous goods” at the Belaskoenea station in Irun (Gipuzkoa). Faced with this situation, the party has registered a formal request in Parliament to request information from the regional executive.
– “This event is not a minor incident, nor is it just another technical breakdown. It is a serious episode that affects railway safety in the Basque Country and that, surprisingly, has been treated with absolute silence by the regional executive,” said the Basque parliamentarian of the PP Santiago López, who has registered the request for information. Renfe extends the alternative transport plan between Madrid and Andalusia until 16 February: {Translation, summary}
– Renfe has extended until 16th February the Alternative Transport Plan it established on 20th January, following the suspension of high-speed service between Madrid and Andalusia due to the rail accident at Adamuz (Córdoba), resulting from the interruption on the line.
– Renfe has reported on its ‘X’ account that passengers with tickets purchased prior to 18th January “must exchange their ticket for the new one under the Alternative Plan, through the usual sales channels”. Specifically, it detailed that the Seville-Madrid AVE service, in both directions, is running with a transfer between Córdoba and Villanueva de Córdoba and that “changes and cancellations are enabled at no cost”.
– The initial forecast was that the line might become operational again in approximately ten calendar days, but “the weather conditions have complicated the progress of the works”. Source, Spanish: https://www.europapress.es/andalucia/noticia…
