SPAIN
Pedro Sánchez reaffirms his ‘No to war’ stance and says he does not fear reprisals: {Translation, summary}
– Pedro Sánchez has firmly restated Spain’s opposition to the conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran, advocating for peace and diplomacy while dismissing fears of reprisals. He cautioned against repeating the errors of the 2003 Iraq war, recalling its negative aftermath. Rejecting threats from Donald Trump over the use of Spanish military bases, Sánchez affirmed Spain’s moral and economic strength. He implicitly criticised leaders like Trump and Netanyahu for using war to mask failures and profit a few.
– The government is evacuating Spanish citizens from the region and preparing economic measures. While condemning the Iranian regime, Sánchez insists that illegality cannot be answered with illegality, and that Spain, aligned with international law and its allies, must champion a peaceful, diplomatic resolution to prevent a wider disaster. Trump claims that Spain is a ‘terrible’ ally and that he has ordered ‘all trade to be cut off’: {Translation, summary}
– Donald Trump has declared Spain a “terrible” ally and ordered a halt to all trade and agreements with the country. This action is in response to the Spanish government’s refusal to allow US bases in Spain to be used for attacks on Iran. Trump criticised Spain’s stance as “unfriendly” and its leadership as poor, also pointing to its failure to meet NATO’s defence spending targets. He asserted that the US can use the bases whenever it wants regardless. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz supported Trump’s criticism, stating that allies are trying to convince Spain to meet its NATO military spending commitments. Brussels backs Spain after Trump’s threats and proposes to act if necessary: {Translation, summary}
– The European Commission has voiced its full solidarity with Spain following US President Donald Trump’s threats of trade reprisals. This action stems from Spain’s refusal to allow the use of its military bases for a US offensive against Iran. EU spokesman Olof Gill stated the bloc is ready to defend its members’ interests and safeguard EU trade through its common policy. Brussels called on Washington to honour the terms of a July trade agreement between Trump and Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, which capped US tariffs on European goods. The Commission stressed the importance of stable and predictable transatlantic relations. Trump had labelled Spain’s stance as “unfriendly” and announced he was cutting all trade and agreements with the country, also criticising its NATO defence spending. The EU insists the US must fully comply with the joint declaration to maintain a beneficial and stable trade framework for both parties. Spain says it is surprised by Merz’s attitude in not taking a stand in defence of Spain: {Translation, summary}
– Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares has expressed surprise at German Chancellor Friedrich Merz {pic with Trump} for failing to defend Spain against US President Donald Trump’s criticism. Trump threatened trade suspensions and criticised Spain’s refusal to allow use of its military bases for an Iran operation, as well as its defence spending. Albares conveyed this surprise to his German counterpart, noting that Merz had actively supported Trump’s stance during the Oval Office meeting, confirming Spain was the only NATO country not meeting spending targets and stating he was trying to convince Spain to comply. Albares stressed the need for European solidarity, recalling Spain’s support for other EU members. He contrasted Merz’s approach unfavourably with that of previous Chancellors Merkel and Scholz, citing a different “European spirit”. The episode highlights tensions over NATO defence spending and the importance of EU cohesion, with Spain seeking reciprocity for its own support of European initiatives. ANDALUCÍA
A “narco-coffin” containing cocaine is found in Marbella and another containing military weapons is found in Algeciras: {Translation, summary}
– National Police have dismantled two major drug networks in Marbella and Algeciras, seizing over a tonne of cocaine and an arsenal of weapons. In Marbella, a buried “drug bunker” containing 1,056 kg of cocaine was discovered in the Ricmar forest. During the operation, suspects shot at officers before four were arrested. Seized items included an AK-47, an AR15 rifle, an UZI submachine gun, and police equipment.
– In a separate Algeciras operation, 25 firearms were confiscated, 19 of which were AK-47 type weapons of war, hidden in a vehicle to protect “drug nurseries”. One person was arrested. The sophisticated operations involved surveillance cameras and vehicles with duplicate plates. The arrests involve charges including attempted homicide and illegal weapons possession, marking a significant blow to organised crime in southern Spain. Andalusian Police Launch ‘Titan Group’ to Crack Down on Illegal Tourist Rentals: {Translation, summary}
– The Titan group, a new unit of the National Police attached to the regional government, has been created to inspect Andalusia’s tourism industry, including holiday rentals, hotels, and related services. Its work will focus on cyber-patrolling digital platforms to detect clandestine and illegal offerings, a key point of contention between the regional and national governments regarding jurisdiction over tourist property registers. This national group is separate from regional enforcement agencies.
– While the national ministry cites thousands of unregistered properties in Andalusia, the regional government claims exclusive authority, having cancelled over 13,000 itself. The unit will enforce the 2026 Tourism Inspection Plan, aiming to be preventative and dissuasive rather than punitive. However, it can open proceedings and impose fines. Current maximum penalties for serious offences are 150,000 euros, but pending legislation could raise this to 600,000 euros for grave breaches like obstructing inspectors or providing false documents. The officers will collaborate with regional inspectors across all provinces. Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/andalucia/ciberpatrullas-policias-cazar-pisos-turisticos_0_2006065839.html
ALGARROBO
New medical centre in Algarrobo Costa: {Translation, summary}
– The new medical centre in Algarrobo Costa is the result of “loyal and necessary institutional collaboration to carry out such important future projects as this one.” The transfer of a municipally owned building will allow these healthcare facilities to be housed on the ground floor and semi-basement, with a total constructed area of over 802 square meters. Work began this Monday after the contract was awarded to the joint venture Comsa-Refermo.
– “The investment dedicated to the construction of this new infrastructure totals €688,217 from the Andalusian Health Service’s own funds, and if the deadlines are met, we expect it to open at the beginning of this summer,” the delegate reported.
– The new facility will include nine consultation rooms: seven for doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy room, and a multi-purpose paediatric consultation room, as well as a space for social workers. The Community Social Services, run by the Málaga Provincial Council, will be located on the first floor of this building. “With this new clinic, we will triple the number of consultations compared to the current one, in addition to significantly improving accessibility for both users and professionals and expanding the range of services,” the delegate concluded. RINCÓN DE LA VICTORIA
Rincón de la Victoria votes to ban burkas inside municipal buildings:
– Rincón de la Victoria town hall has approved the right-wing political party Vox’s proposal to “regulate access to municipal buildings when the face is completely covered by a niqab, burka, or other equivalent garments.” The initiative, which prohibits the use of these items of clothing, received the support of the Popular Party (PP), which holds an absolute majority in the town hall and was met with total rejection from the socialist (PSOE) and Con Rincón parties. MIDDLE EAST
Israel announces more ‘large-scale’ bombings in Tehran and threatens to continue attacking ‘throughout Lebanon’: {Translation, summary}
– Israel has launched its fifth day of coordinated attacks with the United States against Iran, conducting “large scale” strikes on Tehran targeting Revolutionary Guard infrastructure. Defence Minister Israel Katz issued a direct threat to eliminate any Iranian leader continuing the “plan to destroy Israel”.
– Simultaneously, Israel is bombarding Lebanon, including Beirut’s Dahieh suburbs, with its Northern Command vowing to strike “all of Lebanon” as casualties rise to at least 56 dead. In retaliation, Iran has closed the strategic Strait of Hormuz to shipping, claiming to have attacked over ten oil tankers attempting to breach the blockade. The region remains on edge as Iran prepares to select a successor for its slain supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with the decision expected following his funeral.

HEALTH
They say it like it’s a good thing– It takes 3 days just to get a future appointment scheduled with family medicine: {Translation, summary}
– The average wait to request a family doctor appointment in Malaga’s Primary Care centres is now 2.6 days, according to regional government representative Patricia Navarro {pic}. {That wait is just to schedule the appointment, not to actually be seen. -Ed.} She attributes this improvement, which aligns with the Andalusian average of 2.3 days, to the ‘back office’ system, which manages all user requests within 72 hours. TECH
Leave big tech behind! How to replace Amazon, Google, X, Meta, Apple – and more:
– We’ve entered into a Faustian pact with these companies: “While it’s brilliant to have access to high-quality products and software, very often for ‘free’, it’s important to remember that there is a trade-off involved – often of our personal data and privacy,” says Lisa Barber, tech editor at Which? We give these companies our attention and our information, which they then turn into big bucks and apparently unassailable monopolies.
– But the good news is we can go elsewhere. The rest of the world is weighing up its reliance on US technologies, and in Europe especially we’re realising there are better alternatives to just about everything big tech is shilling, if by “better” we mean greener, more ethical, more independent, more respectful of your privacy or simply less disturbingly, monolithically powerful. Making the switch is easier than you might imagine. Here are a few pointers.
