Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

SPAIN
Sánchez Admin’s Mismanagement Costs Spain Sixty Billion in Lost Recovery Funds- 2025 confirms the worst year for the execution of European funds: {Trans., summary}
– The closure of the 2025 financial year has exposed the devastating failure of Pedro Sanchez’s Government in managing the European Next Generation EU funds after five years. Spain has recorded its worst budgetary execution since the programme began, worse even than the already poor 2024 results. Authorisations, commitments, obligations and especially actual payments have all declined, with the Government achieving only 18.7 percent payment execution of the funds planned for 2025. This means the money has not reached the real economy with the required speed or efficiency, despite being the greatest modernisation opportunity Spain has had in decades.
– Key investing ministries such as Transport, Industry, Housing, Digital Transformation, Ecological Transition and Science continue to show alarmingly low execution rates. Housing executed just 10 percent of its budget and will return 3,250 million euros to Brussels. Science and Innovation, Industry’s PERTEs and Digital Transformation under Oscar Lopez have also underperformed.
– Increased budgetary modifications, more numerous than even during the covid year, reveal opacity and arbitrary governance. The Government has renounced 60,000 million euros in loans, representing 72 percent of the potential amount, through seven addenda that have reduced the plan’s ambition.
– This centralised, interventionist approach has produced bureaucracy, bottlenecks and returns of funds instead of productive investment. With five months remaining, the data confirm that Sanchezism has lacked the administrative capacity to transform this historic European opportunity into real growth, damaging trust and Spain’s future competitiveness. AXARQUÍA
A storm will change the weather in Axarquía, bringing rain, haze and likely thunderstorms: {Trans, summary}
– AEMET expects on Wednesday a storm moving from western Portugal to the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula. AEMET forecasts cloudy or very cloudy skies for the province, with persistent rain accompanied by mud deposits, which could be locally heavy. Temperatures will decrease across the board, noticeably the maximums. Winds will be light and variable, with moderate westerly winds in the first half of the day.
– According to current forecasts, the low-pressure system will continue its southward movement on Thursday, settling between western Morocco and the northeastern Canary Islands. This will bring a transitional day to the Axarquía region with more stable weather. Skies will be mostly clear across the area on Thursday. Minimum temperatures will remain unchanged or decrease slightly, while maximum temperatures will rise, noticeably inland.
– With some uncertainty, the forecast for Friday shows the storm approaching the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula again, so scattered showers are possible in the Axarquía region. Hazy skies will also persist. Maximum temperatures will decrease and minimum temperatures will rise.
– Uncertainty is growing for the weekend, as the low-pressure system will likely interact with a new influx of cold air into the peninsula, meaning that unsettled weather and showers could continue throughout the rest of the week in different parts of the country. In short, decidedly spring-like weather, with variable skies and fluctuating temperatures. MALAGA CITY
Marea Blanca (white tide) movement is calling for a demonstration in defense of public healthcare on April 12th in Malaga: {Trans., summary}
– The White Tide movement in Andalusia is calling for demonstrations to denounce the “deterioration and dismantling” of the Andalusian public health system, “driven by the current Andalusian government.” The demonstrations will take place in the capital cities of all eight provinces on Sunday, April 12. In Málaga, the protest will be held that day at 12:00 noon in Plaza de la Marina. The mobilization is being called just before the regional elections to be held on May 17.
– The organizers maintain that the protest will take place “in a context marked by budget cuts, the advance of privatizations, and waiting lists that stretch for months.” Faced with this situation , social groups, neighborhood associations, unions, healthcare professionals, and civil society organizations have joined forces “to halt the progressive deterioration of the public health system” in the autonomous community.
– The march will begin at Plaza de la Marina and proceed along Muelle de Heredia, Alameda Principal, and Calle Larios, ending at Plaza de la Constitución. A manifesto will be read there. The demonstration has the support of more than twenty social groups, unions, political parties, and patient associations. These include CCOO, UGT, CGT, the Andalusian Workers’ Union, PSOE, IU, Podemos, Adelante Andalucía, Facua, and the Andalusian Association of Mental Health Professionals.
– The slogan is “For 100% Public Healthcare .” The organizing groups are inviting people to join the protest and expressing their “absolute rejection” of the “neoliberal policies being implemented by the Andalusian PP government, which are destroying public services.” Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/malaga/marea-blanca-convoca-manifestacion-sanidad-publica-malaga_0_2006412346.html

Man attacks his ex-partner’s parents after breaking into their house with a machete in Malaga: {Trans., summary}
– The National Police are continuing their investigation to locate and arrest a man who allegedly forced his way into his ex-partner’s home in the Las Castanetas neighbourhood of Malaga on Saturday 4 April, armed with a large machete and he had his face hidden, apparently with a balaclava or a mask according to those present.
– The incident occurred at around 18:00 hours when the man kicked down the door and entered the property where several family members, including minors, were present. He brandished the machete and issued death threats before stabbing the woman’s parents, causing injuries of varying severity. The mother, aged 48, suffered a cut to her arm and was the most seriously affected. Police and emergency services attended the scene following calls for help.
– During the subsequent investigation officers discovered that the injured father, aged 51, had breached an active restraining order against his wife and arrested him for that offence. A shotgun was also seized from the property. The main suspect, identified by the family as the woman’s ex-husband despite his disguised appearance, remains at large while the investigation continues. VÉLEZ-MÁLAGA
Police crack down on international car theft ring in Vélez-Málaga: {Trans., summary}
– The National Police have dismantled a Lithuanian criminal organization dedicated to the illicit trafficking of vehicles that operated in Vélez-Málaga and the Axarquía region, in an operation that has resulted in the arrest of six people in the provinces of Málaga, Almería and Alicante.
– The investigation, which lasted more than three months, has confirmed that those arrested are the suspected perpetrators of dozens of vehicle thefts in the province of Málaga, all of the same Japanese make. So far, officers have recovered 13 vehicles, and four of those arrested have been remanded in custody. In addition, the searches yielded tools for stealing vehicles, counterfeiting materials, software for cloning keys and control units, as well as more than €2,000 in cash. The operation remains open and investigators are analyzing all the information gathered, so further arrests and the recovery of more vehicles in the coming days are not ruled out. ALMAYATE
Valle-Niza and Almayate Alto, another night of panic over a new wave of thefts: {Trabs., summary}
– Another night of fear in Valle-Niza and Almayate Alto. More robberies. More hooded figures moving through the farms and rural homes in the west of Velez-Malaga. And once again residents have taken to the streets in an attempt to stop what they now consider “a real nightmare”.
– The alarm was raised in the early hours. According to Esther Ruiz, one of the most active neighbours in reporting this wave of crime that has been taking place over the past three weeks, the latest incidents occurred on the night of Good Friday during Holy Week. This resident claims that four people struck again in the area and that the neighbourhood experienced moments of “real panic”.
– One resident even set off fireworks in an attempt to deter the intruders, and some neighbours thought they were gunshots.
– Ruiz explains that one neighbour fired rockets to try to scare off the intruders. The problem was that some residents believed they were gunshots. The fright was immediate. So too was the tension. Once again the area filled with cars, lights and neighbours determined that no house should be left alone.
– The neighbour complains that the thieves no longer target only empty farms. They also strike when people are inside, in some cases with elderly residents present. There is a sense of impunity which, in her view, shows that the criminals have lost all fear. “I do not understand how four people can be laughing in this way at the authorities, the police and at us,” she laments.
“A climate of siege”
– The problem, the residents insist, goes far beyond a simple robbery. It has become “a climate of siege”. A routine of vigilance. A permanent state of alarm. WhatsApp groups that boil every night with warnings, camera footage and suspicions. And improvised neighbourhood patrols to cover long lanes, broken paths and isolated farms.
– In some of the videos seen by SUR the thieves damage and strike the security cameras after realising they are being recorded. In another, alarms can be heard sounding, yet the intruders still do not leave the properties, which on this occasion were empty at the time of the break-ins.
– Ruiz once again calls for specific resources for the rural area. Greater police presence. Faster response capacity. And equipment adapted to difficult terrain, where simply arriving quickly is not enough if the access roads are damaged or if houses are scattered several kilometres apart. “You cannot ask an 80-year-old person to send their location,” she says.
– The neighbours’ reaction has once again been to take action. Several cars drove through the area during the night to deter the thieves and reinforce vigilance. Yet the neighbour herself admits that “the nervousness is at its highest”. And that the fear of a direct confrontation grows with every new incident.
– The National Police attended the scene and complaints have already been filed. The mayor of Velez-Malaga, Jesus Lupianez (PP), has met with those affected and has promised to improve coordination and control in these rural settlements. But in Valle-Niza and Almayate Alto the feeling remains the same: the robberies do not stop. And the response is not arriving at the pace they demand.

GRANADA
A man was arrested for attacking three people with an axe “without saying a word” while they were walking down the street in Montefrío: {Trans.}
– The Civil Guard has arrested a 45-year-old Moroccan man in the town of Montefrío, Granada, accused of attacking three residents—two women and a man—with an axe in the street. The victims, who were apparently passing by, sustained injuries of varying severity. According to the Civil Guard and the 112 emergency services, the attack occurred around 11:00 a.m. on Fuente y Prado Street in the town.
– The victims were walking along a public road when the assailant attacked them with an axe “without saying a word,” according to Mayor Remedios Gámez. Initial reports indicate that one of the women is middle-aged and the other is around 70 years old. The municipality has clarified that the assailant does not appear to be registered as a resident there, and neighbors are baffled as to what could have motivated the attack.
– Medical personnel and a helicopter were dispatched to the scene to attend to the two women, one of whom was more seriously injured. Both were evacuated to the Trauma Hospital in Granada. Sources close to the case have detailed that the younger of the two women suffered a head injury. The other was evacuated with stab wounds to her hands, in addition to having a finger amputated. {No mention of injuries to the male victim. -Ed.}
– During his escape, the alleged assailant caused a traffic accident. The accident resulted in no injuries but damaged a car. Finally, the Civil Guard arrested him at 12:00 noon this Monday in a rural area near the town. – The newly affected batch is 361614, with an expiration date of April 9, 2026, of the Carrefour brand ‘Smoked Norwegian Salmon,’ packaged in plastic blister packs.
