Congratulations on your double anniversary as webmaster and editor:
I must say, I really look forward to receiving my daily dose of DigamXtra in my morning inbox.
Not only does it provide loads of local information, but also some very interesting articles concerning wider aspects of living in Spain, and the corruption within our local and national government.
It must take you quite some time to collate all this information, as well as your often very astute comments that follow,
We mustn’t forget the many sponsors you have, and the services they provide. I hope that people support them where possible.
Last but not least, there is Andy Capp and his mates to give us a chuckle every day.
For providing all this, I would like to thank you for the time and effort that you put in for bringing the whole thing together.
I am just sorry that there must be a number of readers out their that don’t appreciate what you do, and I hope that they may reflect on this and send you some financial support, however small that may be. It all adds up.
Thanks and best wishes, Steve ( Caleta )

All that money but no budget- Sánchez’s Tax Hikes Outpace Inflation, Doubling Burden on Spaniards Since 2017: {Trans., summary}
– Pedro Sánchez’s government is projected to collect 325,356 million euros in taxes in 2025, excluding Social Security contributions. Since 2017, the last full year before his administration, income tax receipts have almost doubled, rising from 77,038 million to 142,466 million euros, an increase of 84.9 per cent, far outpacing the 24.7 per cent inflation over the same period. Corporate tax, VAT, and excise duties have all increased sharply, contributing to a total rise of 127,255 million euros in tax revenue. Social Security contributions are also expected to grow from 125,967 million euros in 2017 to around 180,000 million in 2025, adding 54,033 million euros.
– Combined, taxes and social contributions will have increased by over 181,000 million euros under Sánchez, representing a burden on both individuals and businesses. This means that, in real terms, the growth of the tax burden has been 2.2 times faster than inflation, highlighting a significant rise in fiscal demands on the Spanish population during his tenure. Immigrant slashes a man’s face for criticizing him for hitting cars and street furniture in Malaga:
{Trans., summary}
– A 49-year-old Moroccan immigrant was arrested in Malaga for allegedly attacking a 41-year-old Portuguese man with a knife after a street argument. The victim suffered a 20-centimetre facial wound extending from eyebrow to chin, affecting the lip and deeper skin layers, and required 32 stitches and surgical attention. The attack occurred after the victim criticised the suspect for damaging public property and harassing passers-by.
– The suspect attempted to flee, concealing the knife under a parked car, but police recovered it with blood traces. Authorities later found the detainee had an outstanding arrest warrant for a previous case. The suspect was taken to a medical centre and then police custody, while the victim was urgently admitted to hospital, where the severity of his injuries was confirmed. Police emphasise the risks of antisocial behaviour escalating into violent attacks and continue to investigate the incident. Cat Colony Update– José Pino announces a historic resistance in Mezquitilla– “To destroy this cat colony they will have to go over us.”: {Trans.}
– The leader of AxSi denounces that the PP of Jesus Lupianez and the GIPMTM of Atencia intend to demolish the animal shelter in breach of the Animal Welfare Law and the CER method.
– Jose Pino, councillor of Andalucia Por Si in the Town Council of Velez Malaga, appeared today in Mezquitilla together with his colleagues and a group of residents to denounce what he describes as an attack on animal welfare. According to the Andalucianist leader, the governing team of the PP of Jesus Lupianez and the GIPMTM of Atencia plans to begin works imminently that would result in the total destruction of the feline colony that lives in the area.
– Pino recalled that in the last council meeting AxSi presented a proposal for the effective implementation of the CER method, Capture, Sterilisation and Return, with a budget of 50,000 euros, which was rejected by the votes of the Partido Popular and the Independent Group Pro Municipality Torre del Mar. They voted against dedicating a single euro to these animals when, by law, it is the responsibility and duty of the municipality to ensure their welfare, the councillor stated.
– During his address, Jose Pino strongly criticised the attitude of the PP mayor. The mayor only likes being mayor for his privileges, to raise his salary, to have an official car and free petrol. But when it comes to complying with the Animal Welfare Law and relocating these cats to a decent place where residents can continue caring for them, he looks the other way, when it is his responsibility as mayor to care for all animals without owners, but he only cares about his own dog.
– The AxSi councillor demanded the immediate suspension of any action that endangers the animals and called for public mobilisation. I demand that Mr Lupianez come here and relocate this colony to a decent place, as the law states. If he does not do so, he should know that my team and I will stand in front of the machinery together with residents from across the municipality, whom we call upon to join us. We will not allow anything to be destroyed. To touch these animals, they will have to remove us first.
– Jose Pino concluded by reaffirming his commitment to animal welfare groups and to the residents who voluntarily maintain these colonies, stating that AxSi will not take a single step back in defending the rights of animals in the municipality. Germany suspends military approval for long stays abroad for men under 45:
– Germany’s Defence Minister Boris Pistorius says men of military age in Germany do not need to report lengthy stays abroad. His statement comes after a controversy broke out over the possible consequences of a new law which re-introduced military service in Germany. The Military Service Modernisation Act, which came into force on 1 January, aims to boost defences following threats from Russia in the aftermath of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
– In a statement sent to the BBC earlier in April a defence ministry spokesman confirmed that males aged 17 and older were required to obtain prior approval for stays abroad lasting longer than three months. The requirement to obtain permission had gone largely unnoticed until it was reported by a German newspaper last week. It is not believed to have been applied.
– Now, Boris Pistorius from the Social Democrats has told the German Press Agency (DPA) that he is introducing an exemption. “Whether they are 17 or 45, or anywhere in between – everyone is, of course, free to travel and currently does not need permission to do so,” he said. Lengthy stays abroad will not need to be reported either. “During this peacetime period, there will be no permission procedures. We are suspending the permission requirement as long as military service is voluntary,” Pistorius said. Full article: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/ckgx103wkl1o
UKRAINE WAR
Russia and Ukraine accuse each other of violating Orthodox Easter ceasefire:
– Russia and Ukraine accused each other Sunday of violating a Kremlin-declared Easter ceasefire that took effect less than 24 hours earlier.
– Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday declared a 32-hour ceasefire over the Orthodox Easter weekend, ordering Russian forces to halt hostilities from 4 p.m. on Saturday until the end of Sunday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy promised to abide by the ceasefire, but warned there would be a swift military response to any violations.
– The General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces said in a statement Sunday that it had recorded 2,299 ceasefire violations by 7 a.m. local time, including assaults, shelling and small drone launches. It said that the use of long-range drones, missiles, or guided bombs had not been reported. A Ukrainian military officer told The Associated Press Saturday that Russian forces had continued to attack their positions.
– Russia’s Defense Ministry also said Sunday it had recorded 1,971 ceasefire violations by Ukrainian forces, including drone strikes on Russia’s Kursk and Belgorod regions that injured civilians.
– Previous attempts to secure ceasefires have had little or no impact, with the two sides blaming each other for violations. Putin unilaterally declared a 30-hour ceasefire last Easter, but each side accused the other of breaking it.

UK puts Chagos Islands handover deal on hold after Trump withdraws support:
– Britain’s agreement to hand Mauritius the Chagos Islands that are home to a strategic U.K.-American military base is on indefinite hold because U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration has withdrawn its support for the deal. The British government acknowledged Saturday that legislation to ratify the agreement for the islands in the Indian Ocean has run out of time in Parliament.
– Trump initially backed the deal, but changed his mind in January, calling a deal to transfer sovereignty of the islands, home to the joint military base on Diego Garcia, “an act of GREAT STUPIDITY” in a social media post.
– The U.K. put the bill’s progress on hold, and the government now concedes it will run out of time to become law before the current session of Parliament ends in the next few weeks. It is not expected to be included in the list of bills announced by King Charles III for the next session of Parliament, which begins May 13. MIDDLE EAST
US-Iran peace talks end without agreement, Vance leaves Pakistan:
– The U.S. and Iran failed to reach an agreement to end their war despite lengthy talks that concluded on Sunday in the Pakistani capital Islamabad, jeopardising a fragile ceasefire. Each side blamed the other for the failure of the 21-hour-long negotiations to end fighting that has killed thousands and sent global oil prices soaring since it began over six weeks ago.
– Vance said Iran had chosen not to accept American terms, including not to build nuclear weapons. “We need to see an affirmative commitment that they will not seek a nuclear weapon, and they will not seek the tools that would enable them to quickly achieve a nuclear weapon. That is the core goal of the president of the United States, and that’s what we’ve tried to achieve through these negotiations.”
– Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency said that “excessive” U.S. demands had hindered reaching an agreement. Other Iranian media said there was agreement on a number of issues but that the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s nuclear programme were the main points of difference.
– Before the talks began, a senior Iranian source told Reuters the U.S. had agreed to release frozen assets in Qatar and other foreign banks. A U.S. official denied agreeing to release the money. As well as the release of assets abroad, Tehran is demanding control of the Strait of Hormuz, payment of war reparations and a ceasefire across the region, including in Lebanon, according to Iranian state TV and officials. Tehran also wants to collect transit fees in the Strait of Hormuz. Full article: https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/us-iran-talks-pause-now-disagreements-remain-2026-04-11/
Trump responds…
The image shows a Truth Social post by Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) announcing a US Navy blockade of the Strait of Hormuz in response to Iran’s actions. Here’s the full extracted text from the post: “So, there you have it, the meeting went well, most points were agreed to, but the only point that really mattered, NUCLEAR, was not. Effective immediately, the United States Navy, the Finest in the World, will begin the process of BLOCKADING any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz. At some point, we will reach an ‘ALL’ BEING ALLOWED TO GO IN, ALL BEING ALLOWED TO GO OUT’ basis, ‘but Iran has not allowed that to happen’ by merely saying, ‘There may be a mine out there somewhere,’ that nobody knows about, but them. The WORLD EXTORTION, and Leaders of Countries, especially the United States of America, will never be extorted. I have also instructed our Navy to seek and interdict every vessel in International Waters that has paid a toll to Iran. No one who pays an illegal toll will have safe passage on the high seas. We will also begin destroying the mines the Iranians laid in the Straits. Any Iranian who fires at us, or at peaceful vessels, will be BLOWN TO HELL! Iran knows, better than anyone, how to END this situation which has already devastated their Country. Their Navy is gone, their Air Force is gone, their Anti Aircraft and Radar are useless, Khomeini, and most of their ‘Leaders,’ are dead, all because of their Nuclear ambition. The Blockade will begin shortly. Other Countries will be involved with this Blockade. Iran will not be allowed to profit off this illegal act of EXTORTION. They want money, and more importantly, they want Nuclear. Additionally, and at an appropriate moment, we are fully ‘LOCKED AND LOADED,’ and our Military will finish up the little that is left of Iran President DONALD J. TRUMP”
Saudi Arabia restores full capacity on East-West oil pipeline to 7 million bpd after attacks:
– Saudi Arabia has restored full oil pumping capacity through the East-West pipeline to about seven million barrels per day, it said on Sunday, days after providing an assessment of damage on its energy sector from attacks during the Iran conflict. Saudi Arabia intercepted many Iranian missiles and drones in recent weeks. Artemis II’s moon-traveling astronauts return home to cheers after a record-breaking trip:
– Still marveling over their moon mission, the Artemis II astronauts received a thunderous welcome home Saturday from hundreds who took part in NASA’s lunar comeback that set a record for deep space travel.
– The crew of four arrived at Ellington Field near NASA’s Johnson Space Center and Mission Control, flying in from San Diego, where they splashed down just offshore the evening before.
– During Artemis II’s nearly 10-day mission, the astronauts voyaged deeper into space than the moon explorers of decades past and captured views of the lunar far side never witnessed before by human eyes. A total solar eclipse added to the cosmic wonder. On their record-breaking flyby, the astronauts reached a maximum 252,756 miles (406,771 kilometers) from Earth before hanging a U-turn behind the moon, eclipsing Apollo’s 13 distance record.
– It was crucial for NASA that Artemis II go well. The space agency is already preparing for next year’s Artemis III, which will see a new crew practice docking its capsule with a lunar lander in orbit around Earth. That will set the stage for the all-important Artemis IV moon landing in 2028, when two astronauts attempt a touchdown near the lunar south pole.

The Civil Guard warns of the asphalt scam– Report it immediately: {Trans., summary}
– The Civil Guard has warned the public about a new scam in Spain, known as the asphalt scam, targeting homeowners. Fraudsters offer to resurface residential streets and driveway access for chalets and individual houses at unrealistically low prices, claiming they have leftover materials from nearby public works. Victims are asked to pay under the table, with no invoices or official documentation.
– The scam has two likely outcomes: the workers take the money and vanish, or they complete the work very poorly. In either case, homeowners are left with financial loss and substandard work. The Civil Guard advises the public to remain cautious, avoid trusting unsolicited offers, and report incidents promptly to prevent others from falling victim. Drivers and non-drivers alike are urged to be vigilant against this emerging fraud. Source, Spanish: https://www.eldebate.com/motor/20260411/…

Spain’s high-speed rail suffers biggest drop since Covid-19 due to Adamuz crash- The number of AVE passengers fell by 32% in February:
– The train accident in Adamuz (Cordoba) in January and the resulting delays due to speed restrictions and other operational issues have eroded passengers’ trust in the high-speed rail in Spain. The number of passengers using the services of operators Renfe, Iryo, and Ouigo plummeted by 32% in February to 2.16 million – the largest drop in demand since the Covid-19 pandemic.
– On the other hand, Ine figures show a 15% increase in long-distance bus travel, reaching 1.8 million passengers. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/spain/spains-highspeed…

Tennis News- Sinner dethrones Alcaraz in Monte Carlo: {Trans., summary}
– Sinner defeated Alcaraz in Monte Carlo. He took the title and the world number one ranking after winning the final 7-6 (7/5), 6-3 in two hours and 15 minutes. The first head-to-head match between the two in four months and 26 days went to the Italian, although it might not be very useful as a reference point for what’s to come. The match was marked by a very uncomfortable wind that particularly affected Alcaraz’s game and mental state. The player from Murcia was uncomfortable because, in addition to the wind, Sinner’s relentless tennis became a constant threat as the final entered its decisive stages. The player from San Cándido notched his seventh victory in 17 head-to-head matches against Carlitos. This is his third Masters 1000 title of the year. He has won all the tournaments played so far: Indian Wells, Miami, and now Monte Carlo. Source, Spanish: https://www.larazon.es/deportes/tenis/…

Who Knew? Japan’s Lady PM Is A Rocker & Deep Purple Fan:
– Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi took a short — and happy — break on Friday as she hosted legendary British rock band Deep Purple in Tokyo as a longtime admirer. “Welcome to Japan … Uh-oh, I can’t believe Deep Purple are here,” Takaichi said as she walked into a guest room at the Prime Minister’s Office with open arms and all smiles to welcome the band members. “I have always admired Deep Purple.”
– “You’re my god,” Takaichi told drummer Ian Paice, presenting him with a set of Japanese-made TAMA drumsticks she had signed. “You’re a drummer, we are friends,” Paice told her. Takaichi is a hard rock and heavy metal music fan and was an avid drummer in her college days.
– The prime minister explained her history as a Deep Purple superfan for more than half a century. At elementary school, she was already listening to “Machine Head,” the band’s 1972 album featuring top hits like “Highway Star” and “Smoke on the Water.” In junior high school, she played the keyboard in a Deep Purple cover band, then as a university student she switched to drums, she said.
– “Nowadays, when I have a fight with my husband, I play drums on ‘Burn’ and put a curse on him,” Takaichi joked. She has previously noted “Burn” as one of her favorite songs, saying it “clears my mind.”
– The band’s courtesy visit was a pleasant break for Japan’s first female leader, known for her long working hours and now struggling with strained diplomatic ties with China, the fallouts from the war in the Middle East as well as rising prices at home.
– “I express my deepest respect for you for making rock history and continuing to take on new challenges and producing even more compelling music today,” Takaichi said, wishing them a successful tour beginning Saturday in Tokyo.
– She did not forget to do her work as prime minister and stressed that promotion of cultural content is one of the key areas of her government’s growth strategy. “I hope Deep Purple’s performances starting tomorrow will excite fans across Japan and serve as a powerful force in promoting the long-standing Japan-UK cultural exchanges,” she said. Volunteers turn a fan’s recordings of 10,000 concerts into an online treasure trove:
– The growing Aadam Jacobs Collection is an internet treasure trove for music lovers, especially for fans of indie and punk rock during the 1980s through the early 2000s, when the scene blossomed and became mainstream. The collection features early-in-their-career performances from alternative and experimental artists like R.E.M., The Cure, The Pixies, The Replacements, Depeche Mode, Stereolab, Sonic Youth and Björk.
– There’s also a smattering of hip-hop, including a 1988 concert by rap pioneers Boogie Down Productions. Devotees of Phish were thrilled to discover that a previously uncirculated 1990 show by the jam band is included. And there are hundreds of sets by smaller artists who are unlikely to be known to even fans with the most obscure tastes.
– All of it is slowly becoming available for streaming and free download at the nonprofit online repository Internet Archive. Here is the link: https://archive.org/details/@aadam_jacobs_collection
