– Winner of the most prestigious awards worldwide, Ara Malikian performs over 450 performances a year in more than 40 countries. He is currently touring with more than 10 different shows accompanied by renowned musicians. He has recorded more than 40 albums and has created his own orchestra.
– An inexhaustible musical and human restlessness has led Ara Malikian to delve into his own Armenian roots and to assimilate the music of other cultures from the Middle East (Arabic and Jewish), Central Europe (gypsy and kletzmer), Argentina (tango) and Spain (flamenco), all within a very personal language with the virtuosity and expressiveness of the great European classical tradition.
– His quality and level as a violinist has been recognised in numerous prestigious competitions worldwide, and he has been awarded twice in “The Music Awards” in the categories of “Best album of new music” and “Best classical music performer”.
– He arrived in Spain fleeing the Lebanese war and post-war period and came to play on the streets and in the underground. But his peculiar idiosyncrasy, his unorthodox image, his instrumental genius not without a sense of spectacle, together with his friendly accessibility have made Ara Malikian one of the most popular musicians in our country. And as such, he has to expand his capacity, from the small village theatres where he took refuge, to the sports palaces and bullrings, which will soon be football pitches or giant coliseums. SPAIN
Brussels urges Spain to begin the withdrawal of aid due to the energy crisis and other measures to reduce debt: {Translation, summary}
– The European Commission has recommended this Wednesday to Spain the gradual suppression of energy support measures by the end of 2023, with the exception of the energy tax, and its total elimination in 2024, while encouraging the use of the corresponding savings to reduce the public deficit to limit spending and thus meet the fiscal requirements demanded for next year.
– Brussels also encourages Spain to preserve nationally financed public investment and ensure the effective absorption of grants from the Recovery and Resilience fund and other EU support, in particular to foster the green and digital transitions.
– Other recommendations put forward by Brussels include reducing dependence on fossil fuels, accelerating the deployment of renewable energies, increasing the availability of energy-efficient social and affordable housing, and intensifying policy efforts aimed at providing and acquiring the necessary skills for the green transition. Analysis- For Spain’s Socialists, Regional Elections A Rehearsal For National Vote:
– In speeches across the country ahead of regional elections on Sunday, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has promised two-euro cinema tickets for the elderly, affordable homes for the young and money to mitigate the effects of a long-term drought.
– Sanchez’s electoral pledges show how he is using Sunday’s ballot to set the stage for a national vote due to take place at the end of the year that will decide whether his Socialist party remains in power, according to Lluis Orriols, professor of political science at Carlos III University.
– More than 35 million Spaniards will vote in 12 regions and 8,000 towns and cities, most of them currently governed by the Socialists (PSOE). Polls are predicting gains for the conservative People’s Party (PP), which if replicated later in the year could unseat the current left-wing coalition. ANDALUCIA
The Medical Union rejects the agreement with the Board due to the lack of doctors: {Translation}
– Andalusian public health requires at least 1,200 doctors, and the main problem of this health system is the lack of physicians, according to the Andalusian Medical Union (SMA), which did not sign the agreement with the Board that the other unions have signed for not fixing that problem.
– The president of the SMA, Rafael Carrasco, who has warned the Board that it cannot be solved without the doctors and that this union represents more than 90 percent of them, while the subscribers to the agreement hardly have any physicians as members.
– Carrasco has given the example of the two hundred positions for family doctors in Andalusia for which there have been no applicants, while the agreement signed by the rest of the unions lacks even a measure to make these positions attractive. The SMA has asked the Board what it intends to do to make this region attractive to doctors and has described the incentive of 150 euros per month offered by the regional Administration for positions that are difficult to fill as insulting, since in other communities that same incentive It is multiplied by ten and, according to Carrasco, “it doesn’t even give enough for gasoline to get to those places.”
– The union has also reproached the Board for having offered more than a thousand places for other categories, including those of a purely administrative nature, and for having avoided increasing a supports that depends on the regional Administration, such as training and responsibility.
– He has also regretted that the responsible counselor, Catalina García, continues to differentiate between specialists and family doctors and continues to offer increases of more than double for the former, to the detriment of the latter.
– The SMA has also rejected that the Ministry has conditioned the Pact on the Professional Career to which it has now signed with the unions -except the SMA- to try to end the protests of the doctors who, in the form of strikes and concentrations, have been taking place since months ago. This connection of one pact with another has been described as “blackmail” and therefore “improper and unacceptable” by Carrasco.
– According to the SMA, the Board leads to “a model of overcrowded health centers” because “it is not that there are no doctors, it is that they leave for better positions elsewhere”, since many good professionals are trained every year in the faculties of Andalusia.
– Andalusia has 524 doctors for every 100,000 inhabitants, while another community such as the Basque Country has 692 for the same number of inhabitants.
– On the order projected at the time by the Board to refer patients from Primary Care to private healthcare, which has been described by Carrasco as “inopportune and barbaric” and that would mean an “excessive payment” with respect to the costs involved in public health, the SMA considers that it has not been withdrawn despite the agreement with the rest of the unions.
– After the press conference, which coincides with the seventh day of the strike called by this union, a demonstration has begun that will run from the Palacio de San Telmo, headquarters of the Presidency of the Board, to the headquarters of the Andalusian Health Service. MALAGA PROVINCE
Malaga province and Costa del Sol weather will remain cool and wet into June:
– The unstable weather, which has set the tone in the second half of this month, is on track to extend to the first third of June, according to the state weather agency’s forecasts.
– For now, what remains of this week will be similar to the previous one. The isolated depression at high altitude (Dana) that is affecting Malaga province and the Costa del Sol now will move away between today (24 May) and Thursday, which will give rise to a small lull. But only for a short time, as another Dana will enter from the north starting Friday, and it threatens to bring more rain during the weekend. The new Dana will be formed in the Atlantic, which will influence the southern part of the Spanish mainland. This will continue having an effect during all that remains of May and may even continue at the start of June. The ‘Rainbow Family’ camp illegally in the Natural Park of Cádiz and defy the authorities: {Translation}
– Around 50 people have been camping illegally since last Saturday in the area up to Fardela, in the Cadiz municipality of Benaocaz, in the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park, where they are building bonfires, dumping rubbish and pitching tents to spend the night.
– According to local newspaper La Voz del Sur, they are members of The Rainbow Family, which describes itself as a hippie commune. Their spokesman, Juan, has expressed his indignation, denying that they are causing any kind of disturbance and clarifying that “we are a family, there are old people, children and teenagers, and we come to learn from each other”.
– For her part, the mayoress of Benaocaz, Olivia Venegas, has reported that this group has settled in this area motivated by “a lunar cycle” and that they are expected to stay 28 days, although the settlement, she recalled, is illegal because “you can’t camp, they are dumping waste and are making fires, something that is totally forbidden.”
– Access to the area has been cut off. Sources from the Civil Guard in Cádiz have indicated that they are already preventing access to the area so that the group does not increase and to be able to evict those who are “little by little”, warning that they have already been given numerous sanctions. The bonfires they light are also being extinguished and the structures they have been setting up are being dismantled.
– The agents are currently working to identify these fifty or so people, although, “they are not very cooperative”. In addition, campers have stated that they have settled illegally in the area after they asked the Town Hall to carry out this encampment, something that was denied.
– In view of the situation, the mayoress of Benaocaz, Olivia Venegas, has conveyed a message of calm to her neighbours, to whom she has conveyed that “everything is going to flow normally and that in a short time this is going to be resolved”. Source, Spanish: https://www.20minutos.es/noticia/5131001/0/la-guardia-civil-vigila-a-la-familia-arcoiris-una-comuna-de-medio-centenar-de-personas-acampadas-en-grazalema-por-el-ciclo-lunar/
EUROPE
France bans short-haul flights with train alternative as of Wednesday: {Translation, summary}
– France is banning regional flights from today (24/5) when there is an alternative train service of less than two and a half hours, with immediate effect on air links between Nantes, Bordeaux, Lyon and Paris-Orly. The decree, which applies for a period of three years, states that train journeys must have “sufficient frequencies and adequate timetables”, while the connection must allow the passenger to spend more than eight hours at the destination during the day. In addition, the train service must be operated between stations serving the same cities as the respective airports concerned.
– In this regard, the French Minister of Transport, Clément Beaune, welcomed this measure as an essential step and a strong symbol in the policy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. “It is a world first and is fully in line with the government’s policy of encouraging the use of modes of transport that emit less greenhouse gases,” he said in a statement.
– However, the International Air Transport Association (IATA), through its director general, Willie Walsh, described the measure as “completely absurd” and that it “serves no purpose”. Walsh explained that if all routes of less than 500 kilometres in Europe were eliminated, 24% of flights would be eliminated, but, on the other hand, CO2 emissions would fall by only 3.84%, citing a Eurocontrol report.
– In addition, one of the airlines’ employers, A4E, lamented that “banning these journeys will have only minimal effects” on CO2 emissions. It also said governments should support “real and meaningful solutions” to the problem. Sniffer dogs join search for Madeleine McCann at Portuguese reservoir:
– Police deployed heavy equipment and sniffer dogs on Wednesday, the second day of a search at a remote reservoir in Portugal for evidence linking a German suspect to the disappearance of British toddler Madeleine McCann 16 years ago.
– Emergency services brought in a remote-controlled tractor-mounted tree cutter to clear what appeared to be a new search area, a few hundred metres (yards) away from a temporary camp set up on Tuesday on the shores of the Arade reservoir by Portuguese police, assisted by German and British counterparts.
– Citing a source close to the investigation, Portugal’s Expresso newspaper said the German Federal Criminal Police Office acted on a tip-off from an informer, “whom German police consider very credible” and who provided them with details that the investigators “are taking very seriously”.
– Prosecutor Christian Wolters in Braunschweig, Germany, told broadcaster NDR the information did not come from the suspect and there was “no confession or anything similar”, and police were not necessarily looking for McCann’s remains at the Arade.
