Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

SPAIN
Spain needs 25 million migrants of working age to prop up pensions, bank claims:
– One of the most difficult challenges for the Spanish economy in the short and long term is population ageing. The fall in the country’s birth rate is obvious, but the Bank of Spain also highlights in its report the sharp drop in Spain’s mortality rate, two things that will intensify in the coming decades and will be a more pronounced problem than in other neighbouring countries, the organisation said in its new annual report published on Tuesday 30 April.
– In the next 30 years, the dependency rate – the ratio between the over 66s and the 16-66 age group – in Spain will increase by 27 percentage points to 54%, while in the European Union (EU) this rate will increase by only 16 points to 46%, well below the Spanish rate.
– The Bank of Spain’s prediction is simple on paper, but complicated in practice: promote working longer, undertake “without delay” an “ambitious” financial consolidation process with a medium-term perspective so the public pension system is sustainable, and analyse whether public actions to reconcile family and work are helping to increase the birth rate. But it is still not guaranteed the system will stabilise.
– Although the Bank of Spain details that migration has picked up in recent years, “it does not seem likely this will prevent the process of population ageing in which our country is immersed”, nor “resolve the imbalances that could arise in the labour market in the future”. In fact, according to estimates, some 10 million foreign-born people of working age will arrive in Spain over the next 30 years, but this is still not enough to keep the dependency rate in Spain at current levels. The Bank of Spain calculates this volume of arrivals would have to be “three times higher” between now and 2053 in order to keep the rate stable.
– Another complication is that this increase in social security contributions will have implications on employment. The Bank of Spain’s simulation exercises show a direct relationship between contribution rates and labour market developments. Specifically, the results suggest an increase of one percentage point in the average effective rate would, after four years, generate a fall in the number of employed people of around 0.25%, or some 50,000 jobs. MALAGA CITY
Companies affected by the drought will demonstrate again this Friday in Malaga- they demand a minimum flow to survive: {Translation}
– The businesses most affected by the drought are once again taking to the streets this Friday in Malaga to demand a minimum flow of water to allow them to weather the storm and survive until the water situation returns to normal. Gardeners, lifeguards, nurseries or tourist flats have sent a letter to the delegate of the Junta de Andalucía in Malaga, Patricia Navarro, in which they demand a series of measures to continue working between May and October.
– In their letter, signed by 156 different companies and professionals, they see “a serious threat to the continuity of our businesses, which would lead to the dismissal of thousands of workers, irreversible losses of green areas and accumulation of debts”.
– They therefore call on the Junta, which should review the measures within two weeks, to allow between May and October a survival irrigation with drinking water twice a week, with a maximum of 400 litres per square metre throughout the summer. To this end, they propose that prior authorisation should be sought from professionals.
– In addition, the green light should be given for the opening of swimming pools that are already full, as they “need a minimum amount of water” to be refilled. To this they add the reactivation of disused wells and the speeding up of procedures for the drilling and legalisation of these wells. They add to their plea the use of water from the groundwater table that comes from private communities and “that ends up being wasted through drainage”.
– In addition, they demand that the administration increase investment in water infrastructure and speed up the execution time. They give as an example the creation of piped connections between areas that “do not have non-potable water or, directly, no water at all”, to guarantee irrigation in most public or private green areas.
– They also announce that during the demonstration, which starts at 18:00 this Friday from Plaza de la Marina, they will hand out 700 plants to the people of Malaga. Full article: https://www.malagahoy.es/malaga/empresas-manifestarse-sequia-Malaga-sobrevivir-agua_0_1899110653.html
MOTRIL
Animal rescue groups in Motril denounce state of municipal dog shelter:
– Animal welfare organisations in Granada province have complained to the Junta de Andalucía and to Seprona, the animal welfare and environment protection branch of the Guardia Civil, about the state of the facilities and the dogs at Motril’s municipal animal shelter. The groups claim that the company currently contracted to run the service is failing to comply with the regulations. The shelter has been run by the same company for almost a decade and it was the only one to respond to a new call to tender.
– Gema Palma, head of SOS Animales Salobreña, said she regrets that the company, which has been subject to complaints in other municipalities in Spain, has every chance of having its contract renewed.
– Palma insists that the obligation to provide veterinary care to the animals that need it is not being fulfilled, especially when animals are first taken to the shelter that visibly need urgent health care. Similarly, SOS Animales Salobreña points out that the kennels where the dogs are housed do not meet the minimum requirements as there are sharp wires that can easily cause injury {pic}. “We know that in the last year several dogs have died in the facilities attacked by other dogs. In addition, dogs catalogued as potentially dangerous are given up for adoption without requiring the obligatory licence to have this type of breeds,” the organisation points out in its complaint.
– In 2020 Seprona opened an investigation for animal abuse, abandonment and fraud at the municipal shelter. However, sources from the Guardia Civil say that in the most recent inspection there was “nothing to report”. European Parliament rejects the Granada-Motril railway connection project in favor of lines to Ukraine & Moldova:
– The European Parliament has given the final approval to the revision of the plan for the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), which excludes the Granada-Motril railway connection from this new regulation that will define communications in the continent until 2050. Now local business leaders, politicians and Motril’s port authority are looking for new ways to fund the project.
– This revision of the European transport network was negotiated during the Spanish Presidency of the EU Council. The 27 countries decided to prioritise the completion of works on already planned rail corridors, including connections to Ukraine and Moldova, which were previously excluded from the passenger and freight plan. Europe is focusing on cross-border roads, railways, bridges and tunnels in order to address outstanding connections. {If the EU wants to push their green Agenda 2030 and encourage travel/shipping alternatives to road traffic, a trainline from Granada, to Motril, and on to Malaga surely makes sense, and is way overdue. -Ed.} Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/andalucia/costa-tropical/europe-leaves-the-motril-train-definitively-out-20240430081141-nt.html
HUELVA
ON SALE NOW- The 1st Ibero-American Jazz Festival will bring together “the leading figures” of the genre, such as Pat Metheney, in Huelva from 6 to 10 November:
{Translation, summary}
– From 6 to 10 November, Huelva will become “the capital of jazz” thanks to the celebration of the 1st Ibero-American Jazz Festival, which will host “the leading figures” of this musical style.
– These are five days in which Huelva will become a showcase for national and international jazz, with top artists from all over the world, but always giving special prominence to Latin artists.
– Specifically, among the artists confirmed for the moment are Iván ‘Melón’ Lewis & Ariel Brínguez, who will present their work ‘Alma en Cuba’ at the Gran Teatro on Thursday 7 November.
– Tenor saxophonist Ariel Brínguez, ex-member of Irakere and grandson of the musical director of the legendary Los Fakires, Juan José Brínguez; and pianist Iván Melón Lewis, currently a close collaborator of Ara Malikian, with whom he usually plays both in duo and in his group, bring to Huelva their proposal as a duo, which will transport the audience to the colours and harmonies of their native Cuba: danzón, contradanza, son montuno and European classical music that come together in an open and exquisite chamber jazz.
– On the 9th of November it will be the turn of Catalan trumpeter, saxophonist, singer and composer Andrea Motis with her new trio Temblor, also at the Gran Teatro.
– On the 10th of November, jazz lovers will be able to enjoy the talent of guitarist Pat Metheny {pic}, who will present his latest album ‘Dream Box’ at the Casa Colón. Pat Metheny is considered by far one of the best jazz musicians of recent decades

Ukraine Update- soldiers say rear defensive lines barely exist amid Russian advance:
– During pitched battles with far better-armed Russian forces, Ukrainian soldier Batyar’s unit has few options.
Devastating Russian aerial glide bombs that can drop up to 1.5 tons of explosives out of range of most of Ukraine’s air defenses are gnawing away at his men’s positions in a new tactic.
– Yet, to retreat carries no promise of safety, the rear defensive lines meant to give them cover barely exist, he said. Lack of ammunition is forcing the outnumbered Ukrainian soldiers to pull back, one village after another, including three surrendered Sunday, as intense fighting roils the countryside surrounding Avdiivka nearly three months after the strategic city fell to Russia.
– Facing an outcry after Avdiivka’s fall, Ukraine is rushing to build concrete-fortified trenches, foxholes, firing positions and other barricades on the front lines. But relentless Russian shelling, lack of equipment and crippling bureaucracy plague construction across the vast 1,000-kilometer (600-mile) front, even as a new Russian offensive looms, according to a dozen Ukrainian soldiers, government officials and construction company directors interviewed by The Associated Press. Kyiv’s forces are up against a concerted Russian push in eastern Ukraine, a military official says:
– The situation on the front line in eastern Ukraine is worsening but local defenders are so far holding firm against a concerted push by Russia’s bigger and better-equipped forces, a senior Ukrainian military official said Thursday.
– Russia has amassed troops in the Donetsk region in an effort to punch through the Ukrainian defensive line, according to Nazar Voloshyn, spokesperson for Ukrainian strategic command in the east of the country. “The enemy is trying to seize the strategic initiative and breach our defense,” Voloshyn said on national television. “The enemy is actively attacking along the entire front line, and in several directions they have achieved certain tactical advances,” he said. “The situation is changing dynamically.”
– Russia has pushed Ukraine onto the back foot on the battlefield as Kyiv grapples with shortages of troops and ammunition. Ukrainian forces are now racing to build more defensive fortifications at places along the around 1,000-kilometer (600-mile) front line. AstraZeneca admits its Covid vaccine can cause rare side effect in UK court documents for first time- February alone saw 158 gov’t compensation payouts to UK victims of AstraZeneca vaccine damage:
– AstraZeneca has admitted for the first time in court documents that its Covid vaccine can cause a rare side effect, in an apparent about-turn that could pave the way for a multi-million pound legal payout.
– TTS – which stands for Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome – causes people to have blood clots and a low blood platelet count. Fifty-one cases have been lodged in the High Court, with victims and grieving relatives seeking damages estimated to be worth up to £100 million.
– AstraZeneca’s admission – made in a legal defence – follows intense legal wrangling. It could lead to payouts if the drug firm accepts that the vaccine was the cause of serious illness and death in specific legal cases. The Government has pledged to underwrite AstraZeneca’s legal bills.
– Scientists first identified a link between the vaccine and a new illness called vaccine-induced immune thrombocytopenia and thrombosis (VITT) as early as March 2021, shortly after the Covid-19 vaccine rollout began.
Lawyers for the claimants argue that VITT is a subset of TTS, although AstraZeneca does not appear to recognise the term.
– Sarah Moore, a partner at law firm Leigh Day, who is bringing the legal claims, said: “It has taken AstraZeneca a year to formally admit that their vaccine can cause the devastating blood clots, when this fact has been widely accepted by the clinical community since the end of 2021.
“In that context, regrettably it seems that AZ, the Government and their lawyers are more keen to play strategic games and run up legal fees than to engage seriously with the devastating impact that their AZ vaccine has had upon our clients’ lives.”
– Figures obtained under a Freedom of Information request show that out of 163 payouts made by the Government by February this year, at least 158 went to recipients of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Psilocybin outperforms other treatments in easing depression in study:
– The active chemical in magic mushrooms could prove to be a powerful antidepressant, a new review finds. Psilocybin outperformed a variety of “control” treatments in easing symptoms of depression, researchers reported Wednesday in the BMJ. Psilocybin has shown promise in reducing depression symptoms after one or two doses, with few side effects and no apparent risk of addiction, researchers said.
– To provide an overview of where research now stands, a U.K. team examined data from seven clinical trials involving 436 people with depression. Psilocybin provided a significantly greater change in depression scores than any of the control treatments, results show.
– The treatment effects of psilocybin were significantly more powerful among patients who had depression alongside another mental illness, and when participants had previously used psychedelics, researchers found. “Interestingly, a clear pattern emerged for past use of psychedelics – the higher the proportion of study participants who had used psychedelics in the past, the higher the post-psilocybin treatment effect observed,” the team wrote.
– Trial patients typically receive psilocybin in a calm living room with soothing music, under the supervision of a psychotherapist – a situation unlikely to occur in typical healthcare settings. “The combination of these elements makes this a relatively complex and expensive intervention, which could make it challenging to gain approval from regulatory agencies and to gain reimbursement from insurance companies and others,” the researchers wrote.
– “The high cost associated with the intervention also increases the risk that unregulated clinics may attempt to cut costs by making alterations to the protocol and the therapeutic process, which could have detrimental effects for patients,” they added. Apple working to fix iPhone alarm issue:
– Apple has confirmed it is working to fix an issue that is causing some iPhone alarms to not play a sound, after users who overslept raised the glitch on social media. The alarm, built into the Clock app of the device, is the wake-up tool of choice for many iPhone users.
– However, in recent days, a number of iPhone users have reported that their alarms have not gone off, causing them to be late for work and school.
– Apple has confirmed it is aware of the issue, and said it is working to quickly fix it. It remains unclear how many people have been affected, what may be causing the issue, or what, if anything, users can do to remedy it. It has also not been confirmed if the bug is restricted to particular iPhone models or a specific version of its iOS software. Full article: https://www.independent.co.uk/tech/apple-b2538360.html

DO NOT TRUST THE CLOUD! – “Dropbox Sign” Suffers Major Data Hack Of ALL USER DATA, Even Third-Party Receiptients Of Dropbox Files Without Their Own Dropbox Account Exposed, Second Major Dropbox Hack In 18 Months:
– Cloud storage services provider Dropbox on Wednesday disclosed that Dropbox Sign was breached by unidentified threat actors, who accessed emails, usernames, and general account settings associated with all users of the digital signature product. Dropbox Sign lets you sign and store contracts, NDAs, tax forms, and more with legally-binding eSignatures. Now those supposedly high security, legal docs and signatures are all hacked and should be considered public.
– “For subsets of users, the threat actor also accessed phone numbers, hashed passwords, and certain authentication information such as API keys, OAuth tokens, and multi-factor authentication (2FA, 2 factor phone code authorization).”
– Even worse, the intrusion also affects third-parties who received or signed a document through Dropbox, but never created an account themselves, specifically exposing their names and email addresses.
– The breach is the second such incident to target Dropbox within two years. In November 2022, the company divulged it was the victim of a phishing campaign that allowed unidentified threat actors to gain unauthorized access to 130 of its source code repositories on GitHub. Microsoft investigating VPN issues with latest Windows 11 update:
– Microsoft says it’s investigating reports of VPN connection failures after installing the April 2024 Windows 11 update. The KB5036893 security update was issued on April 9th for all supported Windows 11 versions, and some users have reported that VPN connections aren’t working after the patch was installed.
– The only workaround right now is to uninstall the KB5036893 update, and Microsoft says it’s planning to work on a resolution “in an upcoming release,” which suggests a hotfix is on the way.
– These latest VPN issues come nearly a year after Microsoft had to fix major speed issues affecting L2TP / IPsec VPN connections in Windows 11 after an update caused problems. Full article: https://www.theverge.com/2024/5/2/24147054/microsoft-windows-11-vpn-issues-update

– Frank AAR2751. DOB 1.02.24, one of Valentia’s pups, a very happy pup, and loves running around with his siblings, also in kennels. He has started his vaccinations and is available for adoption now.
Please take a look at our website, where you will find more information and photos, plus details of other dogs and pups that we have in our care. Our adoption costs are 110e for pups that have been fully vaccinated, rabies, chip and passport and 180e for older dogs that have all vaccinations, papers and have been neutered. This contributes towards their vet and care costs, and helps us to continue rescuing abandoned dogs and cats.
