Drastic rise in temperatures in Andalusia- the areas where Aemet forecasts up to 36 degrees Celsius by Sunday: {Translation, summary}
– The thermometers are facing intense days in the region, with a clear upward trend that will reach its peak on Sunday. Stifling heat is forecast for that day, the first appetizer of a meteorological summer just around the corner. At the moment, the forecast from the state agency Aemet points to temperatures of 36 degrees in Cordoba, 35 in Seville and 34 in Jaen. This is the calendar of public holidays in Andalusia for the year 2025: {Translation}
– Those with more foresight can start making their calculations for next year. Because the calendar of public holidays in Andalusia for 2025 is already known, which establishes twelve national and regional public holidays with paid and non-recoverable character, to which two local holidays must be added at the proposal of each municipality.
– In accordance with what was approved by the Governing Council on Tuesday, for the year 2025, 6 January, Epiphany of the Lord, and 17 April, Maundy Thursday, are established as public holidays in Andalusia, coinciding with national holidays, as they are traditional festivities in the region, in addition to 28 February, Andalusia Day.
– In addition to these days chosen as regional holidays, there are the national holidays corresponding to New Year’s Day, 1 January; Good Friday, 18 April; Labour Day, 1 May; Day of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, 15 August; Spanish National Holiday, 12 October; All Saints’ Day, 1 November; Constitution Day, 6 December; Immaculate Conception Day, 8 December; and the Nativity of the Lord, 25 December.
– With regard to 12 October, Spain’s National Holiday, as it falls on a Sunday, it is moved to the following Monday, i.e. 13 October, creating an “October bridge” long weekend.
– Thus, the list of public holidays in 2025 in Andalusia is as follows:
– 1 January (Wednesday).
– 6 January (Monday).
– 28 February (Friday).
– 17 April (Maundy Thursday).
– 18 April (Good Friday).
– 1 May (Thursday).
– 15 August (Friday).
– 13 October (Monday).
– 1 November (Saturday).

AXARQUÍA

Two illegal landfills in Torrox and Algarrobo with construction and demolition waste closed down: {Translation, summary}
– Agents belonging to the Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) of the Guardia Civil Command in Malaga have proceeded to the closure of two illegal dumps of construction and demolition waste and other hazardous waste. The dumps were located in the towns of Torrox and Algarrobo where they received waste from all over the Axarquia region.
– Among the environmental impacts are the contamination of soils and aquifers, the deterioration of the landscape and the elimination of this waste without the use of its resources.
– In the first action carried out in the town of Torrox, the agents found that in the affected area, a plot of 6,328 square metres, all types of waste were being dumped indiscriminately. This dump reached a height of 6 metres, which meant a total of 36,000 cubic metres of solid waste accumulated in that area. It was found that in the middle of this landfill there was an active medium-voltage electricity tower that had been half-buried with all kinds of waste, with the cables barely 4 metres above the ground, which posed a serious risk to the physical integrity of workers, farmers and users who frequented the surrounding areas, as heavy machinery was regularly used in the area, creating a high risk of impact or breakage of the wiring. Since 2017, SEPRONA had already denounced this activity on several occasions for the same facts.
– In this case the area affected by indiscriminate dumping in the municipality of Algarrobo reached 8,730 square metres, reaching a height of 10 metres, which meant a total of 87,300 cubic metres of waste. During the inspection of the dump the agents detected strong odours emanating from the dump as there was also organic waste. Similarly, numerous noises were detected coming from the landfill, presumably due to the instability of the waste dumped there, which posed an added risk.
– The investigators verified the existence of two wells/boreholes used to irrigate the produce of an adjoining greenhouse, with the consequent risk of being affected by the possible toxic seepage generated by the landfill. It was also found that the dumping of this waste had partially buried an existing stream in the area, preventing the natural flow of water. It is estimated that a total of more than 123,000 cubic metres of construction and demolition waste (CDW) have been dumped in these two areas under investigation, which means that more than 24,000 lorries could have been dumped there over the last 10 years.
– In the operation, 14 people have been investigated who could have obtained profits from this illegal management amounting to more than 2,400,000 euros. These facts have been reported to the Junta de Andalucía, which has ratified the measures adopted by SEPRONA in view of the seriousness of the facts, proceeding to the initiation of the necessary sanctioning proceedings. The possible environmental damage that these dumps may have caused to the natural environment is currently being investigated, with a view to the possible prosecution of an alleged environmental offence. Salmonella detected in a ton of kebab meat in Malaga: {Translation, summary}
– Following the inspection and control of the facilities of a food business operator located in the El Viso business park, and once the sampling and analysis had been carried out, a batch of 1,020 kilograms has been condemned. An inspection visit to the facilities to proceeded, among other control activities, to take a sample of chicken kebab meat preparations marketed by this operator, to determine the danger of salmonella.
– When the results of detection of this pathogenic micro-organism were obtained, the action protocol was activated, consisting, among other measures, in the suspension and precautionary immobilisation of the goods, carried out on 16 May, consisting of the batch of product in question, which totalled 1,020 kg (21 chicken kebab rolls of 20 kg and 24 rolls of 25 kg). EUROPE

Russia starts exercise to simulate launch of tactical nuclear weapons:
– Russian forces have started the first stage of exercises ordered by President Vladimir Putin to simulate preparation for the launch of tactical nuclear weapons, the Defence Ministry said on Tuesday. Moscow has linked the exercises to what it calls “militant statements” by Western officials, including French President Emmanuel Macron, which it said created security threats for Russia.
– Nuclear analysts say the exercises are designed as a warning signal by Putin to deter the West from wading more deeply into the war in Ukraine. Western countries have provided weapons and intelligence to Kyiv but have refrained from sending troops.
– The Defence Ministry said the first stage of the exercise involved Iskander and Kinzhal missiles. It is aimed at ensuring that units and equipment are ready for “the combat use of non-strategic nuclear weapons to respond and unconditionally ensure the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Russian state in response to provocative statements and threats of individual Western officials against the Russian Federation”, the ministry said.
– The drills involve missile forces in Russia’s Southern Military District, which lies adjacent to Ukraine and also includes parts of Ukraine that Russia now controls.
Belarus, where Russia said last year it was deploying tactical nuclear weapons, will also be involved, the two countries have said.
– Tactical, or non-strategic, nuclear weapons are less powerful than the strategic arms designed to wipe out whole enemy cities, but they nevertheless have vast destructive potential. Full article: https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/russia-says-it-starts-nuclear-military-drills-2024-05-21/

MIDDLE EAST

Israel announces the withdrawal of its ambassadors in Spain, Ireland and Norway for recognizing the Palestinian State: {Translation, summary}
– Joy on one side of the fence, anger on the other. “Israel will not remain silent”, declared Israel’s foreign minister, Israel Katz, upon learning that Norway and Ireland will officially recognise the Palestinian state on Tuesday 28th. Shortly afterwards, Pedro Sánchez announced that Spain would follow suit, and the Jewish state’s first reaction was to “immediately recall the ambassadors” in the three countries for consultations. “This decision sends a message to the Palestinians and to the world: terrorism wins,” lamented Katz, who recalled that Palestinian recognition comes after the Hamas attack on 7 October in which more than 1,200 Israelis were killed and more than two hundred taken captive by Palestinian groups. PETS

PHOTOS- At the Pet Gala, fashion goes to the dogs:
– They may call it a catwalk, but the Pet Gala is the dogs time to shine. Designer Anthony Rubio threw the now-annual fashion fete Monday night, sending 18 dogs down the red carpet at New York’s American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog. Each canine donned couture similar to what celebrities wore at the Met Gala just two weeks earlier.
“I want people to understand that we’re not making fun of the Met Gala. We’re not mimicking the Met Gala,” Rubio said. “We’re elevating and appraising and appreciating the wonderful designs that were presented at the Met Gala by the most talented designers of the world.” Full gallery: https://apnews.com/article/met-gala-pet-gala-dog-fashion-86eb31c2c9f3d72875e971e9a59a6759
