AXARQUÍA
Slow progress for Axarquia desalination plants, still in draft phase: {Translation, summary}
– The head of the Regional Ministry explained that the irrigators will have the Bajo Almanzora I desalination plant draft ready by December of this year and that, in the case of the Axarquia desalination plant, ‘where the Costa del Sol Association of Municipalities has joined the irrigators, they expect to have the drafting of the project ready’ by February 2025. {Note: Once the drafts are approved, and locations & licences & permits are secured, the approximate construction time is 18-36 months. -Ed.}
– ‘Moving forward with the agreement with the users will give the boost that the desalination plants in Almeria and Malaga need. The commitment acquired involves holding a meeting with the irrigators in the first fortnight of November and continuing to promote hydraulic works to solve the water deficit in a region that, to date, maintains the level of water in reservoirs barely above 30%,’ the Andalusian regional government said in a statement.

TORREMOLINOS
The Plaza de La Nogalera will host the XX Torremolinos Pet Contest: {Translation, summary}
– Pet lovers have an opportunity to enjoy this passion, next Wednesday, 18th September, in the Plaza de La Nogalera. This busy space in the town of Torremolinos will host the 20th San Miguel Fair 2024 Pet Competition. The contest will begin at 18:00 hours and participants will be able to opt for different prizes with any type of animal they present: fish, birds, reptiles, guinea pigs, cats or dogs, among others. (Remember the new pet laws. If you bring a “restricted” animal as a pet, be sure to bring your official authorization papers! Animal control officers will be on hand. -Ed.)
– ‘The range of activities that we are launching in this month of September is diverse and varied in the run-up to the San Miguel fair and once again animals also have their place,’ said the Councillor for Sports, Ramón Alcaide, who indicated that, in his words, “anyone who wishes to participate in this initiative can do so by registering for free through the Torremolinos Despega app or at the venue itself”.
– ‘Those who take part in this competition, whatever their mascot, will be eligible for different prizes such as the best child presenter, the most elegant mascot or the most original mascot’, explained Moreno, who pointed out that there will also be gifts from the collaborating companies. Beyond the pet competition itself, the activity aims to give animal lovers the opportunity to meet and enjoy themselves with the different pets. Big-Pharma controlled European Medicines Agency clears deadly painkiller Nolotil for use in EU:
– The use of the drug Nolotil (EU=metamizol; UK=metamizole) is banned in Britain, the US, India and Australia, among other countries, but the EMA has ruled that its benefits “outweigh its risks” despite 350 suspected cases of agranulocytosis in Spain between 1996 and 2023, including 170 Britons.
– The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has endorsed the use of metamizole, a drug prescribed for severe and moderate pain and marketed in Spain under the brand name Nolotil. It concludes that its benefits “outweigh its risks” after Finland called for a safety review linking it to agranulocytosis, a sudden, sharp drop in granulocytes (a type of white blood cell) that can lead to serious or even fatal infections. The European agency believes there is no reason to withdraw it from the market in the countries where it is sold, but at the same time, it has updated its recommendations and called for strengthened measures to facilitate early identification of symptoms and diagnosis of agranulocytosis. Tennis News- Davis Cup Opener Results:
– The United States made light of the absence of several top singles players as they began their Davis Cup Finals group stage campaign with victory over Chile on Wednesday. Reilly Opelka and Brandon Nakashima both came through lengthy three-set battles to give their team a winning lead in the Group C opener in Zhuhai, China.
– Olympic doubles silver-medallists Rajeev Ram and Austin Krajicek {pic} then beat Matias Soto and Tomas Barrios Vera to wrap up a 3-0 victory and join Germany at the top of the table.
– Captain Bob Bryan was unable to call upon the likes of U.S. Open runner-up Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe or Tommy Paul but his team showed its strength in depth to win a tricky tie.
– Opelka, ranked 309th in the world, beat 116th-ranked Cristian Garin 6-3 4-6 7-6(3) before Nakashima, the world number 40, beat Alejandro Tabilo 7-6(5) 2-6 7-6(3).
– Ram and Krajicek also needed three sets in the doubles to give 32-time Davis Cup winners the U.S. the perfect start as they bid to reach the last eight for the second time since the new format was introduced in 2019.
– Four groups of four nations are being contested in four different cities – Zhuhai, Bologna, Valencia and Manchester – with the top two from each group progressing to the final eight-nation knockout round in Malaga in November.
– Later on Wednesday, Carlos Alcaraz is expected to line up for Spain against the Czech Republic in Group B in Valencia while Britain take on Finland in Group D in Manchester.
– The day’s other tie features reigning champions Italy against Brazil in Bologna in Group A.
– Australia beat France in Group B on Tuesday while Germany beat Slovakia in Group C, Belgium beat the Netherlands in Group A and Canada were victorious against Argentina in Group D. Full article: https://www.reuters.com/sports/tennis/united-states-win-davis-cup-opener-against-chile-2024-09-11/

Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-Atlas)- What to Expect This Autumn:
– Soon, by early October, you’ll be able to see Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) with your own eyes. However, in the final days of September, the comet will move far enough from the Sun to become visible.
– It is likely to be very bright. The exact future brightness of this comet is unpredictable and depends heavily on its activity in the coming months. However, most sources agree on one thing: C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) is likely to be visible to the naked eye. If we’re lucky, it could become exceptionally bright and even outshine C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) from summer 2020. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen such a bright comet, so observers are very excited.
– Also, C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) is expected to grow a beautiful cometary tail. After passing by the Sun at a distance similar to Mercury’s orbit, C/2023 A3’s coma of dust and ice will heat up considerably. As the ice particles evaporate, they will quickly escape into space, taking with them a large amount of dust that will extend into a long, bright tail. As history shows, comets that pass close to the Sun have the most impressive tails, formed soon after being “roasted” by the Sun’s heat. And this is the case with comet C/2023 A3!
– September: from 7 to 3 magnitude, moves away from the Sun and begins to appear in the morning sky in the Southern Hemisphere. Short observation window, a good opportunity for capturing the comet’s tail. From September 27 to October 2, it appears very low above the horizon in the morning in the Northern Hemisphere, then disappears for several days until about October 11.
– October: the best month for observations in the Northern Hemisphere. Around its closest approach to Earth on October 12, the comet will be at its brightest (magnitude might be up to -3). It will be located relatively high above the horizon in the evening sky.
– November: from 4.5 to 8 magnitude, visible in the evening. Rises higher in the Northern Hemisphere after sunset.
– December: from 8 to 10 magnitude. Gradually moves closer to the Sun in our sky, rising lower above the horizon. Not visible from the Southern Hemisphere.
– Remember that comets become visible to the naked eye at around magnitude 3. The magnitude scale measures the total light spread over the object, so the naked-eye visibility limit is lower (mag 6.5) for pinpoint sources of light, like stars or planets, and higher for diffuse objects, like comets or galaxies. TRAVEL
EU Citizens Travelling to UK Will Have to Pay €11 Authorisation From April 2025:
– EU citizens travelling to the UK without a visa will soon have to pay a €11 fee and apply for the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). The UK introduced the ETA system last year, but this requirement has so far been applied only to certain nationalities. As the UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper explained, the fee will apply to all EU citizens, including children and babies, who do not need a visa or do not have permission to work, live, or study in the country.
– To ensure more robust security checks and help the abuse of the immigration system, the UK government has decided to expand the ETA system to include EU citizens and nationals of several other third countries, Schengen.News reports. The EU is expected to introduce a similar scheme next year.
– According to the UK Home Office, citizens of the EU will be eligible to apply for an ETA from March 5, 2025, and they will need the document to travel to the UK from April 2, 2025. Full article: https://schengen.news/eu-citizens-travelling-to-uk-will-have-to-pay-e11-authorisation-from-april-2025/
