Editor’s Note: The plans I was working on for a “6th Anniversary as Editor” party on April 10th have not worked out. The space is no longer available & the musicians I wanted have been called out of town. Better luck next time. Perhaps it’s best to wait another five months, and celebrate for my 2000th issue, due near the end of September.

Comares hosts the Provincial Meeting of Hikers and Mountaineers on Sunday, April 14:
– “The meeting will start from the Puerta de Málaga and we will go through the route of the Fuente Gorda until we reach the table of Masmullar visiting one of the least known and spectacular places in terms of archaeological remains, declared BIC since 1931 and then head back to the village on a path of just over 10 kilometres – with 691 meters of slope – but does not present technical difficulty,” said the Councillor for Sports.
– The start is scheduled for ten o’clock in the morning, so that beforehand “you can go to the many bars and restaurants in the village and we will set off to complete the journey”. The registration fee is 10 euros for members of the federation and 13 euros for non-members, and includes a technical t-shirt, a plate of paella and a beer-drink.
– We are expecting more than 200 hikers from all over the province and beyond and we are convinced that it will be a success of coexistence in a privileged environment in which to complete the day in the multiple trails, or zip line in the longest natural anchorage in Spain. Tel 952 50 92 33

Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

This the ‘secret’ bar in Granada that is hidden behind a vending machine frontage:
– If you have young adults visiting, and you want to impress them with your knowledge of the party scene, take them to this hidden club in Granada, after 10pm Wed-Sun of course. -Ed.
– Anyone strolling through the centre of Granada would never guess that behind a street vending machine is the entrance to a bar. The city’s Calle San Matías is home to a whole range of businesses including plenty of places selling soft drinks, sweets and other snacks. However, one of these is deceptive because although it has displays full of crisps and soft drinks, it actually hides a music and drinks club behind its vending machine façade.
– Confuso Club is located at number 25 Calle San Matías.
– Social media has helped to put the place on the map, several customer Tiktok videos have over a million views, and some people just go along to see what the entrance to this secret bar in Granada looks like. “For us all this is a source of pride, but it’s clear to us that if the entrance is cool but the place doesn’t impress, it’s useless,” Guille said. And it is precisely for this reason that they work hard to give customers “a full experience” with “great décor and the best possible sound”. Photos: Alonso Martínez/SUR. SPAIN

“It is unacceptable that Spain only has 57% of the cancer treatments approved by the EU”: {Translation, summary}
– Eduardo Inda, director of OKDIARIO, pointed out during the inauguration of the 4th OKSALUD Conference that “it is unacceptable that Spain only has 57% of the cancer treatments approved by the European Medicines Agency”. In this regard, he stressed the need for our country to rigorously address the unquestionable support for the Health System, and stressed why countries like Germany “have 100% of these treatments or around 80% in France, when Spain is a global power in clinical trials, for example”. He wondered what the Sánchez government is doing and why “it is wasting huge amounts of money without using it for our health”.

The National Court initiates proceedings to investigate the complaint against PSOE, Junts and ERC over the amnesty law: {Translation,summary}
– The National Court has agreed to open preliminary proceedings after receiving the complaint filed last March by Christian Lawyers against the PSOE, its spokesperson in the Congress of Deputies, Patxi López, Junts and ERC for the amnesty law. The association, at the time of filing the complaint, framed the amnesty law as a government measure for the “assault” it is carrying out “on judicial independence”.
– “The facts that result from the previous proceedings, the complaint received by distribution, the complainant being the Christian Lawyers Association, present characteristics that make it possible to presume the existence of a criminal offence,” says the order of the head of the Central Court of Instruction number 3, María Tardón. The magistrate points out, however, that neither the nature and circumstances of these events “nor the persons involved in them” have been determined. For this reason, she considers it appropriate to carry out preliminary proceedings and “to carry out those essential steps aimed at determining this and, where appropriate, the applicable procedure”.
– Speaking to the media, the foundation’s lawyer, José María Fernández Abril, explained that we are going to file a complaint for a crime of 508 of the Penal Code, a crime that protects judicial independence, a crime that protects the usurpation by the public authorities of jurisdictional powers and, alternatively, we are also going to file a complaint for a crime of influence peddling,” explained the lawyer.
– The lawyer pointed out that the people against whom the lawsuit is directed “are the political parties that signed the agreements that put the amnesty law into effect”. It should be noted that Abogados Cristianos filed the complaint before the Audiencia Nacional, considering that the crimes were allegedly committed in Brussels (Belgium), this court being competent to hear crimes perpetrated abroad by Spaniards.
-For Abogados Cristianos, “it is an objective fact that the essence of the agreements signed by the accused parties does not pursue what they have called ‘de-judicialising the State’s conflict with Catalonia'”. “In reality it consists of obtaining votes for the PSOE candidate in the investiture session of the President of the Government in exchange for granting impunity for crimes committed by members and sympathisers of ERC and Junts, which clearly constitutes a pact to favour criminals and not the solution to any conflict”, they argue.
– On Thursday, the president of Christian Lawyers, Polonia Castellanos, welcomed the judge’s decision in a statement. She said that “judges are responsible for dispensing justice and preventing an attack on the Constitution”. MALAGA PROVINCE

Taro (haze) will give way to calima with almost summer-like weather this weekend in Malaga: {Translation, summary}
– For the time being, a warm easterly air mass has blown in over the Mediterranean today. With the light breeze, it carries moisture from the sea surface and creates the boria or advection fog. It will do so in the Guadalhorce Valley, due to its orography. At least one flight from Berlin had to be diverted this morning due to fog to the neighbouring airport of Seville. Towards midday, when the temperature rises further, it will tend to dissipate. This time the phenomenon is not exclusive to Malaga, as it is also seen in Granada, Almeria and Murcia.
– From Friday the taro will be replaced by another phenomenon typical of these latitudes: the calima arrives. The dust in suspension will be driven by a trough at high altitude, which will move in a southwesterly flow, bringing a mass of air from the Sahara to this and other areas of the country. Its effect will be felt from Friday, but will be particularly intense on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. In principle, no precipitation is expected, so it is not foreseeable that the dreaded mud showers will fall, with the exception of a few isolated drops at some points in the province, but it is unlikely, according to Jesús Riesco.
– The third theme of the weekend will be heat, with temperatures forecast to be close to 30C in some areas.
The southerly wind, the same wind that brings the haze, will leave highs of 26 degrees in the capital and in inland areas, such as Antequera on Saturday and Sunday. In Ronda it will be around 25. However, the highest values will be felt in Vélez, with 29 degrees expected on Saturday and 28 on Sunday, while in Coín and Álora they will also be around 27-28. Food prices increase 38% in three years- these are the supermarkets in which they have increased the most: {Translation, summary}
– All supermarket chains included in the analysis have experienced an increase in food prices between 32% and 45%, although the largest increases have occurred in Alcampo and Carrefour. In cash, as the OCU (La Organización de Consumidores y Usuarios ) points out, what three years ago cost 248 euros in Alcampo now costs 355 euros, 100 euros more. In Carrefour, the increase goes up to 122 euros more.
– However, the consumer organization points out that cheap supermarkets are still cheap and expensive ones are still expensive, with one exception. According to the OCU, Carrefour has gone from being one of the cheapest establishments to being the second most expensive, only below El Corte Inglés. The OCU is not clear about the origin of these increases. What is evident is that prices at points of sale can multiply up to six times the prices received by farmers and ranchers.

HEALTH

Prosecutor’s Office of the National Court investigates the adverse effects of Nolotil (metamizol): {Translation, summary}
– The Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Audiencia Nacional has agreed to investigate a possible health liability for possible adverse health effects derived from the consumption of the drug Nolotil. It does so after receiving the complaint filed by the Patient’s Ombudsman and once more complaints have been registered with both the State Attorney General’s Office and the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office of Madrid. This is reflected in a decree signed by the chief prosecutor of the Audiencia, Jesús Alonso, in which he appoints the prosecutor Manuel Campoy as the instructor of these pre-procedural investigation proceedings.
– In this document, Alonso states that the actions of the Public Prosecutor’s Office in this case are aimed at protecting the fundamental right of citizens to physical integrity in relation to the right to the protection of health. They also aim to preserve the right to be protected against risks that may affect their health as consumers and users of health services.
– It so happens that in February, the Central Contentious-Administrative Court number 4 reported that it was studying the complaint for special protection of fundamental rights filed by the Association of People Affected by Drugs (ADAF) against the Ministry of Health and the AEMPS, which it accuses of inactivity “in the real, adequate, updated and responsible pharmacovigilance” of Nolotil for the adverse effects it may cause in a certain population.
– The case stems from a lawsuit filed by this association in November 2023 and a complaint to the State Attorney General’s Office in January this year, in which it accuses those responsible for the departments in charge of this surveillance of a crime of gross negligence for “negligent” action that has caused “harm and even death” in patients.
– ADAF’s complaint explained that the facts are related to the safety of drugs that use metamizole in their composition and that are “the most sold medicines in Spain” because they are used to combat pain.
– ADAF indicates that many officials of the Aemps and the different health administrations in charge of pharmacovigilance in Spain, or people in charge of patient safety in pharmacology, “are not responsibly doing their job by not alerting the medical and health community about some imperative aspects such as the immediate ban on prescription in Spain of products containing metamizole to foreigners in whose countries it is banned: the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Sweden, Japan, Australia, etc.”. In the 2023 lawsuit, they also pointed out that the drug Nolotil “is being wrongly prescribed to British people visiting Spain, or living in Spain, i.e. the floating population, because this drug, the most widely sold in Spain, is very dangerous for this type of population”.
– The association explained to the FGE that it has and can provide “an extensive list of people, identified, national and international, with their medical records in Spain” with evidence of the damage caused by this drug and proof of communication of adverse events to the Aemps and private companies. He pointed out that despite these warnings, “the administrations look the other way without doing anything” and that many people “are dying and suffering very serious adverse reactions”.
– “Serious imprudence, the intentional omission or concealment of information on the safety of a drug, the failure to carry out adequate and responsible pharmacoepidemiologic studies, the failure to activate safety and precautionary protocols, among other aspects, are actions and omissions that could well fit into some types of crime to be determined”, they explained.
– And they wondered what is happening in Spain when “in countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States and Ireland, to give just three examples out of more than forty, the product is banned due to its high level of danger”. “Why in Spain, despite the indications and alerts in pharmacovigilance, is it opting to issue a timid informative note where the AEMPS and the medical and pharmaceutical societies know that it is not being complied with?
– They underlined that the issue particularly affects the Anglo-Saxon population and complained that there is a “lack of attention or disregard for the independent studies published warning of under-reporting and the danger of prescription errors in general”.
– In this sense, they blamed the Aemps that at this time and “with the collusion of the marketing companies or manufacturers of products with metamizole, is launching a campaign in the press and on television to promote the idea that they are safe medicines”. “In this way they encourage the population to consume them and doctors to prescribe them without caution, while ignoring the safety aspects of the product and the need for more responsible information about it,” they complained.
– Precisely in November 2018, the Aemps, which reports to the Ministry of Health, Consumer Affairs and Social Welfare, recommended not giving medicines containing metamizole, such as Nolotil or Buscapina Compositum, to tourists and, in the case of those who could be monitored, to give it only in short therapies and at “minimally effective” doses, monitoring the appearance of symptoms indicative of agranulocytosis. The body made this recommendation after reviewing the situation in Spain following the recent notification to the Spanish Pharmacovigilance System of cases of agranulocytosis, particularly in patients of British origin.
– It noted that the data also confirmed the higher risk in older patients, which is already known, although this adverse reaction could occur at any time during treatment and, in more than half of the reported cases for which information is available, the duration of treatment was longer than one week. Tennis News- Rafael Nadal, Eleven-time Monte Carlo champion, pulls out of next week’s event:
– On Thursday, Nadal announced his withdrawal from next week’s Rolex Masters in Monte Carlo – a tournament he has won no fewer than 11 times. The decision means that he has still only played one ATP tournament all season.
– April and May are meant to be Nadal’s strongest months of the year. They constitute the heart of the European clay-court swing, which he has dominated for the best part of two decades. Unsurprisingly, his announcement had a mournful tone.
– “Hi all, these are very difficult moments for me, sporting wise,” Nadal wrote on the X website, formerly known as Twitter. “Unfortunately I have to tell you that I am not going to be playing in Monte Carlo. My body simply won’t allow me. Full article: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/tennis/2024/04/04/rafael-nadal-rolex-monte-carlo-masters-clay-court-swing/

Notice To All Windows 10 Users- End of service update:
– Microsoft recently announced the prices of the Extended Security Updates program for Windows 10. The operating system is on track to reach its end of support in less than two years (14 Oct, 2025), and companies using it should already start preparing for this big event. However, Microsoft is not ready to reveal all the details for “regular consumers” yet.
– Microsoft has updated the official announcement post to clarify that this initial announcement IS ONLY FOR ENTERPRISE CUSTOMERS.
– Home users should expect a separate announcement, which will most likely have different policies and price tags. Windows 10 users unable to upgrade to Windows 11 will have to either pay Microsoft for extended Win 10 security updates or risk encountering malware exploring unpatched vulnerabilities.
– Extended Security Updates will be available for three years. Businesses will have to pay Microsoft $61 per year for one device, and those joining later will be forced to pay for the previous years since each update is cumulative. The company also has discounts and promotions for specific users and subscribers, such as schools and Windows 365 subscribers. It will be very interesting to see how Microsoft plans to promote the program to your average Joe. DoctorLaptop’s Tips #108: Today’s Malware
– While some people just can’t be bothered, many do value their security and wish to minimize data risks. The following article (below) is an example of why it is important to keep your internet connected devices fully updated; to follow safe online activity practices avoiding strange emails, attachments, links and downloads; and to get annual professional maintenance servicing.
– Today’s spyware can bypass your antivirus and embed itself deep in your device. It will not slow your device down like in years past, but it may drain your battery. Its job is to collect info and remain undetected: data, passwords, credentials, personal details, contacts, your address & phone number, search terms, visited websites, etc., as well as scan emails and messenger content for vital details.
– It will send all it collects back to the hackers, who patiently add info to the profile they are building on you. Once the hackers have enough info, they can impersonate you and take control of your SIM cards and any accounts you have accessed on your devices, while locking you out. This is known as “Identy Theft”. Once they have access, they may empty your accounts and take out loans & credit cards in your name. In a particularly nasty bit of work, “home title theft” is on the rise; they can transfer the title of your home or take out mortguages in your name.
– See the following article for info on local cybercrime.

Seven arrested in Malaga for swindling 3.3 million euros by duplicating (taking ownership of) the SIM card: {Translation, summary}
– The Civil Guard has arrested seven cyber scammers in Malaga, Barcelona, Valencia and Zamora who allegedly defrauded a total of 3,381,000 euros from victims throughout the country using the technique known as SIM swapping, with the help of an operations base in Venezuela with up to 74 members identified.
– The organization fraudulently duplicated the SIM card of a person’s mobile phone by IMPERSONATING THEIR IDENTITY, leaving the victim without telephone service and accessing their personal information, taking control of the phone’s applications and impersonating their social networks, email accounts. email and digital banking, all through verification SMS that arrives on the phone.
– Once the user’s bank recognizes the cybercriminals as the owners of their victims’ accounts, they empty them, take out loans or make large purchases on international platforms, as reported by the Armed Institute in a statement.
– The operation was carried out by the Telematic Crimes Team of the Organic Unit of the Judicial Police of the Civil Guard Command of Granada, after a resident of La Zubia reported that he had been defrauded of more than 25,000 euros through four transfers made fraudulently from their bank accounts.
– During the investigation phase of this operation, Granada investigators discovered that the two lieutenants of the organization were two Venezuelan citizens who lived in the city of Malaga.
