SPAIN
This is how Begoña Gómez’s situation stands after Peinado’s latest ruling– two court appearances a month, no passport, and a trial for four crimes: {Trans, summary}
– Judge Juan Carlos Peinado {pic} has ordered Begoña Gómez {pic}, the wife of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, to stand trial before a jury on charges of influence peddling, private-sector corruption, misappropriation and embezzlement of public funds. Her adviser Cristina Álvarez faces the same charges, while businessman Juan Carlos Barrabés will be tried for influence peddling and private-sector corruption.
– The judge also imposed precautionary measures on Gómez, including confiscation of her passport, a ban on leaving Spain and a requirement to report to court every 15 days.
– Peinado states that the investigation produced reasonable indications of criminal conduct and argues that the seriousness of the possible penalties increases the risk of flight. He further alleges that Gómez benefited from her status as the Prime Minister’s wife. In the ruling, he argues, as he had done in previous decisions supporting his move to send her to trial: “It will not be possible to find a case with similar characteristics, because conduct originating from presidential palaces, such as this alleged case, seems more typical of absolutist regimes, fortunately long forgotten in our State”, before referring to the “reign of Ferdinand VII”. Judge Juan Carlos Peinado’s decision to bring Begoña Gómez to trial on new charges, withdraw her passport, prohibit her from leaving Spain and forcing her to appear every 15 days, has further widened the existing rift between the Executive and the Judiciary: {Trans, summary}
– In the case involving Begoña Gómez {pic}, the critical and distrustful discourse intensifies, with President Pedro Sánchez being the first to question the management of the magistrate in charge, in this case, Juan Carlos Peinado.
– When Peinado’s ruling was made public on Saturday, the reaction from Moncloa Palace was swift. Sources within the Prime Minister’s office did not hesitate to accuse the magistrate of being “a judge who has conducted an investigation that lacks any legal basis and is motivated solely by political reasons.”
– The Government has condemned the “persecution, obsession and disproportionate actions of this magistrate,” and describes as “absurd” Peinado’s justification for withdrawing the passport of Pedro Sánchez’s wife. Socialist Ministers such as Óscar Puente, Óscar López, Félix Bolaños, Diana Morant, Milagros Tolón or Arcadi España have not hesitated to sow doubt about Peinado’s motivations in his procedure.
– The Sanchez administration has condemned the “persecution, obsession and disproportionate actions of this magistrate,” and describes as “absurd” Peinado’s justification for withdrawing the passport of Pedro Sánchez’s wife.
– In his statement, Peinado questions whether the police officers in charge of Gomez’s security could, at any given moment, facilitate a hypothetical escape by the accused. {Remember the embarrassment of the Puigdemont escape? This judge sure does. -Ed.} Police groups and PSOE officials have denounced the judge’s statement and threaten their own legal actions in response.

ANDALUCÍA
Four forest fires in Andalusia over the weekend: {Trans, summary}
– The teams from the Andalusian Forest Fire Extinguishing Service, Plan Infoca , are working to extinguish four fires that broke out in several Andalusian provinces this weekend, during which high temperatures have been recorded across the region, exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in some areas. The affected municipalities are La Carolina (Jaén), Órgiva (Granada), Córdoba, and Mojácar (Almería).
– This Sunday at 07.15 hours the fire declared in the Granada municipality of Órgiva has been stabilized, after an “intense night of work”, with temperatures even higher than 34 degrees in the area. A fire is considered stabilized when it is “evolving favorably,” meaning it no longer has active fronts causing the flames to spread freely. However, it is not yet under control, so firefighters continue working in Órgiva. This fire started in the Las Barreras area , and six teams of forest firefighters, three environmental agents, and three fire engines have been working to contain it.
– In the municipality of La Carolina, in the province of Jaén, the Infoca firefighting service declared the fire in the Los Guindos area under control at 9:15 p.m. on Saturday. Nearly twenty firefighters were deployed to the area to extinguish the blaze. “We are continuing with the final stages of extinguishment,” Infoca reported on its social media account.
– At 8:30 p.m. this Saturday, the fire service declared the fire in Mojácar extinguished , while at 4:45 p.m. on Saturday the fire in Córdoba, which was initially located in Almodóvar del Río , was stabilized, in which four groups of forest firefighters, an environmental agent and two fire engines worked. MALAGA PROVINCE
A summer oasis alternative to Nerja’s Rio Chíllar (that remains closed): {Trans, summary}
– Barranco Blanco, near Coín and Alhaurín de la Torre, offers a quieter alternative to the overpopular Charca de la Ermita and Río Chíllar, the latter now closed. About 50 minutes from Málaga city, this limestone gorge features crystalline pools, white stones, and dense vegetation. Its waters derive from the River Fuengirola’s tributaries and the Mijas aquifer.
– A steep, slippery 2.3-km path from a forest track (park at road MA-3303, kilometre 4) leads to the main pool, fed by a 10-metre waterfall. Bathing is permitted, but caution against slips is essential. Summer driving restrictions (1 June–15 October) prevent vehicles nearing the river due to fire risk.
– Unlike the crowded, well-known sites, Barranco Blanco remains relatively overlooked, making it a serene Sunday escape. Other regional pools exist (Charco de la Virgen, Charca de las Mozas, Genal valley spots), but none match its seclusion and easy accessibility from the capital. It is a Site of Community Importance, home to otters and wild honeysuckle, though care with the latter is advised. Living on wheels in eight square meters to cope with the housing crisis: {Trans, summary}
– {Note: this is a followup to a previous article where I covered hospital staff living out of campers & cars in Malaga parking lots. -Ed.} Rising rents and a lack of affordable housing are forcing increasing numbers of low and middle income people in Málaga province to live in motorhomes. At Sacaba Beach in Málaga, more than 100 vehicles now form an informal settlement, with residents saying low wages, insecure employment and constantly increasing rents have left them with few alternatives.
– Many residents stress that this is not a lifestyle choice but an economic necessity. Some report that the number of people living in the settlement has doubled in the past six months, with new families regularly arriving to ask how they can do the same. One airport worker said he now lives more comfortably in a motorhome than he did in a shared flat, where he relied on credit cards to cover basic expenses.
– Residents argue that housing costs have become disconnected from ordinary earnings. One long term resident noted that many people simply cannot afford even the least expensive studio rents in run-down neighborhoods, of around €800 per month. Others said that both lower and middle income earners are being priced out of the housing market. Although a minority choose motorhome living for environmental or personal reasons, most residents cite the housing crisis, stagnant wages and lack of affordable rental accommodation as the main causes of their situation. MALAGA CITY
Malaga’s Water Park is closed due to a gastroenteritis outbreak: {Trans, summary}
– The Water Park is a very popular recreational area, strategically located on the Antonio Banderas seafront promenade, just a few meters from La Misericordia beach. The park features nine play elements designed to be accessible and safe for users of all ages. Furthermore, it is completely free to enter , attracting a large number of locals and tourists every day who are looking to escape the high temperatures in the Andalusian city.
– The Malaga City Council has enforced the preventative closure of the leisure facilities known as Parque del Agua (Water Park). The decision was made in coordination with the regional government after the Public Health Service detected an unusual increase in cases of stomach ailments in several schools in the region.
– Health authorities have indicated that the affected students had recently taken field trips to this recreational area, raising suspicions of a possible source of infection. To ensure public safety and dispel any doubts, extensive sampling will be carried out at the site in the coming hours. The main objective is to scientifically determine whether the children’s visit is directly related to the cases reported in the classrooms. According to sources at Malaga City Hall, the municipal attraction will remain closed to the public until the final results of laboratory tests are obtained and evaluated. ALMUÑÉCAR
More than 13 kilos of various drugs seized at a club in Almuñécar: {Trans, summary}
– The Civil Guard has arrested a 42-year-old man as part of Operation HEMP25 , as the alleged perpetrator of a crime against public health for drug trafficking in Almuñécar, after seizing more than 13 kilos of various drugs in a club in this town.
– The investigation was carried out by agents of the ROCA Team of the Civil Guard Company of Motril, who became aware of the existence of illicit activities in an establishment that operated under the guise of a private club intended for the consumption of cannabis. The investigations carried out by the researchers indicated that the person in charge of the premises might be using the establishment for the distribution of narcotics.
– The operation took place last Tuesday and resulted in the seizure of a significant quantity of narcotics and materials related to their distribution. Specifically, the agents seized 2,134 grams of marijuana buds; 8,636 grams of marijuana ready for rolling; 1,018 grams of hashish; 1,240 grams of hashish oil; 232 grams of hashish acorns (“eggs”); 1,750 grams of chopped tobacco, and 402 grams of marijuana seeds. Also, during the search, several precision scales, cannabis purity tests and 720 euros in cash were found.
– As a result of the operation, the Civil Guard arrested the owner of the establishment as the suspected perpetrator of a drug trafficking offence. The investigation remains open and further arrests are possible. Source, Spanish: https://www.granadadigital.es/drogas-club-privado-almunecar/
BENAMARGOSA
The MA-3107 road between Benamargosa and Riogordo will have partial closures due to improvement works until the end of August: {Trans, summary}
– Traffic disruptions will last from June 22 to August 28, 2026, inclusive.
– The work will be carried out on the section between kilometre points 10+370 and 13+740, where a comprehensive structural repair of the roadway will be carried out, acting on the entire width of the road and with a variable depth depending on the needs detected in each area.
– Due to the nature of the work and the constant presence of heavy machinery in the construction area, it will be necessary to apply traffic restrictions to ensure the safety of both the operators and the road users. However, it has been clarified that traffic closures will be partial and localized, implemented gradually as the construction progresses. In this way, restrictions will affect different points along the route depending on the needs of each phase of the work, avoiding, as far as possible, a complete and permanent interruption of traffic along the entire affected section.
– To facilitate mobility during the construction work, drivers will have several alternative routes available. Among them is the A-356 road towards Benamargosa, passing through Los Romanes, as well as the MA-3107 itself between kilometre points 0+000 and 10+370 and the Camino de Comares. UK
The Guardian– Starmer expected to announce departure on Monday:
– Keir Starmer is expected to announce on Monday that he will step down as prime minister, after overwhelming pressure from Labour MPs to make way for Andy Burnham to become Labour leader.
– On Friday, ministers previously loyal to Starmer told him that he should reach a decision on a timetable for his departure by the end of the weekend or face being forced out of office, with an intervention at Tuesday’s cabinet meeting likely to result.
– Speaking for the government on Sunday, Peter Kyle, the business secretary, refused to comment on Starmer’s specific plans but said the prime minister was aware of the “political realities” and would do what was best for the country.
– Labour has slumped in the polls, and Starmer himself is enormously unpopular with much of the public. Reform UK has led for more than 300 consecutive national polls and many Labour MPs are increasingly convinced that without a change of leader, Nigel Farage will win the next election. Counterterror police investigate after 5 hurt in Edinburgh attacks that appeared to target Muslims:
– Counterterrorism detectives in Scotland were investigating after five people were injured in attacks in Edinburgh that appeared to target Muslims, police said Saturday. Police Scotland said that a 36-year-old man was arrested late Friday after officers received multiple reports of attacks in the west and north of the city.
– The force said that five men — two of them age 22, and others ages 24, 27 and 39 — sustained a range of injuries and three needed hospital treatment. None of the injuries is considered life-threatening.
– The Scottish Association of Mosques said that two of the injured men were attacked after attending prayers at their local mosque. U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that the suspect “appears to be motivated by anti-Muslim hatred.” {But in the UK, if you post on Fakebook that a Muslim attacker is anti-Christian, you go to jail for hate speech! -Ed.}
– Video posted on social media appeared to show a shirtless man carrying a long weapon roaming a street and battering a restaurant door in the Scottish capital. Another video seemed to show the same man on the ground shouting about “protecting the country” while being held by a police officer. Well that deal didn’t last long– Trump threatens to destroy Iran over Strait of Hormuz closure and floats 20% US ‘Guardian Angel’ tax on oil going through waterway:
– President Trump threatened to destroy Iran on Sunday and suggested that the US could take full control of the Strait of Hormuz, becoming the “Guardian Angel” of the oil choke point and take 20% of the crude if the fragile peace deal falls apart. With Iran declaring the Strait of Hormuz closed over Israel’s continued attacks in Lebanon, Trump threatened to blow away the Islamic Republic and make the US the de facto governor of the waterway. “We may take over the Strait, if we have to. If they don’t make a deal, we’ll collect tolls,” the president added.
– The threats are a significant escalation after the US-Iran’s memorandum of understanding all but fell apart last week due to Israel and Hezbollah’s fighting in southern Lebanon.
– The conflict led Iran to close the Strait of Hormuz {pic}, where the Islamic Republic has set up a toll system that it said it wants to implement after the 60-day peace negotiation period. Earlier reports suggested Tehran would charge up to $2 million each for oil tankers to cross the strait.
– The short-lived peace over the weekend allowed 67 ships to go through the Strait on Saturday, with 55 crossing on Friday, according to Secretary of Energy Chris Wright. “In terms of oil and oil products—about equal to where we were before the conflict,” Wright told Fox News. Before the war began, about 20 million barrels of oil sailed through the Strait of Hormuz every day, with more than 130 ships traveling the narrow passage daily.
– With global shipping once again thrown into chaos, Trump warned Iran to fall in line and put the responsibility on Tehran to end the fighting in Lebanon.
– “Iran must immediately stop their highly paid PROXIES in Lebanon from causing trouble,” the president wrote on Truth Social. “If they don’t we’ll hit Iran very hard again, just like we did last week, only harder!!!”
– US and Iranian officials are still planning on direct talks in Switzerland this week despite ongoing conflicts and violations of the ‘memorandum of understanding’ by both sides.

Monday marks the start of the application period for the Imserso ‘Tourism Program’ for the new season: {Trans, summary}
– This Monday, June 22, marks the start of the application period for the ‘Tourism Program’ of the Institute for the Elderly and Social Services (Imserso) for the 2026/2027 season, which ends on July 10.
– Specifically, for the 2026-2027 season, Imserso will offer 879,213 places, of which a total of 7,447 places have been reserved again with a reduced rate, intended for pensioners with fewer resources, as specified at the time by the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs and Agenda 2030.
– This application is required to obtain the resolution that certifies your status as a beneficiary of the ‘Tourism Program’ and will allow you to access available places once they are announced. Those who were accredited to travel in previous seasons do not need to complete a new application unless they wish to modify some information, for which they will have the same deadline. All beneficiaries of the program will receive, starting in the second half of August, approximately, an accreditation letter with the code to book their trips.
– Furthermore, the measures implemented last season will remain in place, and a total of 7,447 places will be reserved at a reduced rate of €50 per place for low income people that qualify, regardless of the destination, with Imserso covering the remaining cost of the trip.
– Another measure incorporated last season and which remains in place is the possibility for users to travel with their pets on the mainland coast and island coast.
