Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

SPAIN
PP, Vox and Junts reject the deficit target for the budget and increase the likelihood of early elections: {Trans, summary}
– Spain’s Congress has rejected the Government’s proposed deficit path, a key step towards preparing the 2027 General State Budget. The proposal was defeated by 178 votes to 167, after Junts joined PP, Vox and UPN in voting against it. Podemos abstained, while other investiture partners also withheld support, highlighting the Government’s difficulty in securing a parliamentary majority.
– The defeat has increased speculation that Pedro Sánchez could call early elections in the first quarter of 2027, especially if he cannot pass the Budget. The Government will have another opportunity to approve the deficit targets on 23 July, and even if rejected again, it can continue the Budget process.
– Junts criticised the proposal as inadequate for Catalonia. PP and Vox rejected the deficit path, arguing that the Government’s economic management was damaging for Spain. The PP said the proposed debt targets were unrealistic, particularly the requirement for regions to limit borrowing while still meeting spending obligations, and accused the Government of being economically ineffective, socially harmful and fiscally irresponsible. Vox also rejected the proposal outright, telling the Finance Minister that the Government should not count on its support.
– The Government maintains it can still present the accounts, but without parliamentary support the future of the 2027 Budget remains uncertain. Source, Spanish: https://www.rtve.es/noticias/20260714/pp-vox-junts-tumban-senda-deficit-presupuestos-apuestas-adelanto-electoral/17155186.shtml

President’s Brother David Sánchez convicted for criminal offence– The Badajoz Court sentences him to nine years of disqualification for prevarication: {Trans, summary}
– The Provincial Court of Badajoz has found David Sánchez Pérez-Castejón {pic}, brother of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, guilty as a necessary accomplice in a case of administrative misconduct involving the creation of a public sector job tailored for him. He was sentenced to nine years of special disqualification from holding public employment or office and from standing for public office.
– Former Badajoz Provincial Council president Miguel Ángel Gallardo was also convicted of two offences of administrative misconduct and sentenced to nine years’ special disqualification from public office and from standing for public office.
– The court ruled that all 11 defendants participated in a preconceived plan devised by senior figures within the Provincial Council to create an unnecessary public position for David Sánchez, bypassing the principles of merit and ability. It found the post was created and later modified to suit his personal interests, while another unnecessary senior post was established for his friend Luis Carrero, allowing both to receive publicly funded positions without proper oversight. All received the same 9 year disqualification for administrative misconduct, and to pay court costs, with none receiving jail time. Gov’t criticises David Sanchez conviction- PP says administration’s attacks on the courts are unacceptable…”never been seen in Spain’s democracy”: {Trans, summary}
– The Government and several ministers released statements after the David Sanchez conviction, stating that it is “atrocious” to condemn an “innocent person without evidence”. PP leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo {pic} has harshly attacked these types of statements.
– Feijóo criticised the Government for attacking the court’s judgment instead of accepting it, after ministers defended David Sánchez’s innocence and questioned the case. He argued the ruling should be respected because it was “unanimous”, with “no flaws, no amendments and no dissenting opinion”, noting David Sánchez had been charged with three offences but convicted of one.
– Rejecting the Government’s criticism, Feijóo said: “Who is the Government to discredit the judgment of the Provincial Court of Badajoz? The Government’s duty is to comply with it.”
– He also rejected claims that the case was driven by the far right, reminding reporters that “the case began with an initial complaint from the party that governed with the Socialist Party, namely Podemos.”
– Warning that the Government’s response threatened respect for the judiciary, he said: “What is the Government talking about? We are beginning to enter dangerous territory and I am concerned.” He concluded that such behaviour had “never” been seen in Spain’s democracy.
– The Government’s response went well beyond simply expressing disagreement with the judgment. Government spokeswoman Elma Saiz defended David Sánchez’s “innocence”, stressed that the Public Prosecutor had sought his acquittal, and argued the case originated with “a far-right organisation”. Moncloa sources went further, describing it as “outrageous that an innocent man should be convicted without evidence”, claiming the trial had fallen apart and alleging the conviction formed part of a political campaign against the Prime Minister and his family.
– Other senior PSOE figures also questioned the ruling. Transport Minister Óscar Puente said the case should never have reached the criminal courts and claimed there was “a great deal of bad politics behind it and no real justice”. PSOE spokesman Patxi López described the proceedings as “a witch hunt” and “the triumph of the strategy of the far right”, while Organisation Secretary Rebeca Torró said the party respected the judgment but disagreed with it, arguing it formed part of a campaign to wear down the Government.
– It was these remarks that prompted Feijóo to accuse the Government of attempting to discredit a unanimous court ruling rather than accepting it. He was not objecting merely because the Government planned to appeal, which is entirely normal. He was objecting because ministers and PSOE leaders publicly asserted that the court had convicted “an innocent man without evidence”, portrayed the judgment as politically motivated, and suggested it formed part of a campaign by the far right, PP and Vox to remove the Government. That is why he replied that the Government should “comply with” rather than “discredit” the Provincial Court’s judgment. Two sources, Spanish:

Local police arrest the suspected perpetrator of an attempted arson in Torre del Mar and are investigating whether it is related to other recent fires: {Trans, summary}

The ongoing investigation is now trying to determine if this incident is related to other fires that have occurred in recent days in various parts of the municipality, a connection that, at present, has not been confirmed and remains under investigation.

The EU and the UK ratify the agreement on Gibraltar, which will mean the definitive closure of the border: {Trans, summary}

MIDDLE EAST
Iran and the US resume the Hormuz War: {Trans, summary}
– The conflict between the US and Iran has intensified after three nights of attacks, destroying hopes of a peace agreement signed a month earlier. US forces launched strikes against Iranian military targets in several southern and western locations, while Iran responded with drones and missiles aimed at Gulf states and Jordan.
– The fighting has expanded into Yemen, where Saudi Arabia and Tehran-backed Shia rebels have reopened another front. In the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global shipping, maritime traffic has almost halted ahead of a planned naval blockade. Donald Trump has cancelled a proposed 20% charge on ships using the strait, replacing it with a demand for trade deals and investments from Gulf countries. The US also suggested adding Iran and Hezbollah to a sanctions bill under consideration by Congress. Source, Spanish: https://www.larazon.es/internacional/iran-retoman-guerra…
GASTRONOMIA
Malaga may run out of octopi for the first time in history: {Trans, summary}
– Málaga fishermen warn that octopi are becoming increasingly scarce for the second consecutive year, pushing prices higher and raising concerns that one of the Costa del Sol’s best-known seafood specialities could become a luxury item. The shortage is being linked to declining catches across parts of Spain, extended fishing closures in Galicia to allow stocks to recover, and changes in sea conditions that some experts believe are altering octopus distribution. Fishermen also continue to face rising operating costs and are still waiting for financial aid after a difficult year.
– Despite the shortage, consumers can still expect plentiful supplies of sardines, anchovies and Málaga prawns, with local prawn stocks recovering following reduced wastewater discharges into coastal waters. As a result, visitors and residents should still find most traditional fried seafood dishes widely available, although octopus is likely to become increasingly expensive. SPACE
Sweet! Scientists find raspberry sugar in interstellar space for the first time – and it could tell us how life arose on Earth:
– Sugars are some of the most important building blocks for life as we know it. They form the structural backbone of our DNA and RNA and keep our metabolic processes running.
Because of this, scientists studying the origins of life on Earth have long wondered how the very first sugars formed on our planet.
– And while sugars like ribose and glucose have been found inside meteorites and asteroids – suggesting they may have formed in the primordial cosmic cloud out of which our Solar System grew – no sugar had ever been directly detected in the vast emptiness of interstellar space.
– Now, scientists have just detected sugar in interstellar space for the first time. An international team of researchers led by Izaskun Jiménez-Serra from the Centro de Astrobiología in Madrid, Spain, say they’ve identified the first sugar ever detected in interstellar space.
– It’s called ‘erythrulose’ and it’s a four-carbon ketose sugar. On Earth, it’s commonly found in raspberries, as well as in sunless tanning lotions. The team detected the sugar within a giant molecular cloud known as G+0.693−0.027, which sits near the centre of our home galaxy, the Milky Way. They say that not only is the sugar there, but it’s surprisingly abundant.
The study revealed that erythrulose is at least eight times more abundant than similar, simpler three-carbon sugars – none of which were detected in the same region.
– Based on how much erythrulose they measured in the G+0.693−0.027 cloud, the researchers estimate that 0.5 to 50 million tonnes of this sugar could have been delivered to Earth’s surface during the ‘Late Heavy Bombardment’, which is a period of intense asteroid and comet impacts that occurred around 4 billion years ago. This could have provided the raw materials needed for Earth’s very first metabolic and self-replicating biological processes to emerge. A Spanish study answers why women are more vulnerable to Alzheimer’s: {Trans, summary}
– Women are around twice as likely as men to develop Alzheimer’s disease, and while longer female life expectancy explains part of this difference, researchers have identified possible biological reasons for greater vulnerability.
– A study from the Institute of Neurosciences in Elche found that the immune system’s interferon signalling pathway is more strongly activated in women with Alzheimer’s. This excessive immune response may increase brain inflammation and contribute to cognitive decline. Researchers found that microglia, the brain’s immune cells, appear to play a key role in this process. Experiments in animal models showed that blocking a protein involved in interferon activation reduced inflammation and improved memory performance.
– The findings suggest that targeting this immune pathway could become a future treatment strategy, although clinical studies in humans are still required. Source, Spanish: https://www.larazon.es/salud/estudio-espanol-responde-que-mujeres…

Football News- Spain defeat France 2-0 to reach 2026 World Cup final: {Trans, summary}
– Spain booked its place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final with a 2-0 victory over France on Tuesday at Dallas Stadium in the US. Spain took the lead in the 22nd minute after France’s Lucas Digne brought down Lamine Yamal inside the penalty area. Mikel Oyarzabal stepped up and confidently blasted the penalty into the top corner, leaving goalkeeper Mike Maignan with no chance.
– Spain tightened their grip on the match in the 58th minute with a superbly worked team goal. Pedro Porro played a pass into Dani Olmo before continuing his run into the penalty area. Olmo returned the ball with a perfectly weighted reverse pass, allowing Porro to finish calmly beyond Maignan and put La Roja within touching distance of the World Cup final.
