Going Overboard? Spain will prohibit commercial fishermen from drinking alcohol four hours before starting their shift: {Trans, summary}
– The forthcoming Royal Decree on professional qualifications in the fishing sector will strengthen measures to prevent the consumption of alcohol and drugs on board Spanish-flagged fishing vessels. The text retains the existing legal limits, a maximum blood alcohol level of 0.05% or 0.25 milligrams per litre of breath, but introduces an important new requirement, all vessels must have a specific policy covering the misuse of alcohol and narcotic substances.
– The regulation states that this policy must, at a minimum, prohibit the consumption of alcohol during the four hours before the start of duty. The restriction will apply to every member of the crew, regardless of their role on board, and will remain in force until the end of their working shift.
– The aim of the future decree is to strengthen maritime safety and prevent dangerous situations arising from the impairment of crew members’ physical or cognitive abilities.
