Scotland politics- Humza Yousaf selected as new first minister, succeeding Nicola Sturgeon: The 37-year-old son of South Asian immigrants is set to become the first person of colour to serve as Scotland’s first minister, the first Muslim, and the youngest person to hold the office. Yousaf, currently Scotland’s health minister, beat two other Scottish lawmakers in a controversial contest to replace First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, who unexpectedly stepped down last month after eight years as leader. Yousaf, who is due to be confirmed as first minister by lawmakers in the Scottish Parliament Holyrood on Tuesday, faces the challenge of uniting his fractured Scottish Nationalist Party (SNP) and re-energising its campaign for independence. NATO- Hungarian Parliament ratifies Finland’s membership: {Translation, summary}
– The Hungarian Parliament, dominated by the party of nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban, ratified Finland’s membership of NATO on Monday March 27 after months of procrastination, bringing the Nordic country a little closer to the Atlantic Alliance. A large majority of MPs (182 out of the 199 seats) approved Helsinki’s entry into NATO, while the case of Sweden will be discussed “later”. Among the 30 members of the organization, 28 countries (United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany) have already ratified the membership of the two countries. Finland had applied to join the Alliance at the same time as Sweden, last May, as a direct result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Finland, subject to forced neutrality by Moscow after its war with the Soviet Union during the Second World War, shares the longest European border (1340 km) with Russia, behind Ukraine.
– Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan gave the green light for Finland in mid-March. The vote in Parliament could take place shortly. The situation is more delicate for its Swedish neighbour, which still faces objections from Ankara. Chinese Moon Mission Finds a Potential Water Reservoir of 270,000 million tons in Lunar Soil:
– In recent years, several robotic missions and ground-based telescopes have confirmed that the Moon continues to store water. And not droplets, but tons in the form of ice. Much of it is in the perpetual shadow areas of the poles, where the sun never reaches.
– However, now researchers studying lunar soil samples from China’s Chang’e-5 mission believe they may have found a water reservoir on Earth’s arid satellite. The evidence comes from beads of impact glass collected by the Chang’e 5 lander, which arrived on the Moon in December 2020 and sent lunar samples back to Earth the same month. In the new paper, a team of researchers posit that glass beads in the lunar soil formed by asteroid impacts give rise to solar wind-derived water. The water present in the glass beads diffuses throughout the lunar surface.
– “These findings indicate that the impact glasses on the surface of the Moon and other airless bodies in the solar system are capable of storing solar wind-derived water and releasing it into space,” said Hu Sen, a planetary scientist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, in the release.
