SPAIN

Sanchez insists on recognizing a Palestinian State and Demands Greater EU Military Spending “Not to be feared, but to be respected”: {Translation, summary}
– The European Union (EU), and also Spain as part of this club, must increase its investment in the “defence industry” in the face of the increasingly tense geopolitical situation and the latent threat from Russia against the EU’s borders. The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, made this clear this Wednesday in an appearance in which he raised the need to “strengthen our capacity for deterrence, not to be feared, but to be respected” and to “protect the project of peace and democracy that is Europe”.
– Regarding Palestine, he assured that the way is being opened to the establishment of a Palestinian State, and after recalling his recent trips to the Middle East, together with the one he will begin this week in Europe, he stated that the “international community will not be able to help the Palestinian State if it does not recognise its existence”. “Spain is prepared to recognise the Palestinian state”, he concluded. ANDALUCÍA

Junta’s drought committee avoids making ruling on controversial filling private swimming pools issue:
– The Junta de Andalucía’s drought committee for Malaga province, which includes the Costa del Sol, is holding back on making an official announcement about whether residential communities will be allowed fill their swimming pools this summer.
– Following the declarations of the minister of agriculture Carmen Crespo last week, the drought committee – despite previously making an exception for public swimming pools in hotels, sport and health centres and campsites – said it is not the body’s decision to make an official ruling on filling or refilling pools.
– During a meeting on Tuesday 9 April, the contributions of the latest rains were analysed, with water restrictions relaxed until October, as reported yesterday by SUR. The limit of consumption per inhabitant is increased by 25% and goes from 160 litres per inhabitant per day to 200. It will be up to each respective municipality to ensure these restrictions are being followed.
– And that seems to be the philosophy: the committee sets limits on how to reach water savings, with consumption a matter for each municipality. The same applies to the use of beach showers, foot baths and public fountains. Secretary general for water Ramiro Angulo chaired the meeting in Malaga and said: “Although the rains have helped to improve the situation, we cannot think the drought is over, so we must continue to maintain saving measures that help to ensure the most efficient use of resources”.
– Irrigation. With regard to irrigation, the drought committee agreed to apply an increase of up to 6 hm³ to the irrigable area of the Guadalhorce region of Malaga province. In the Axarquia area there will be an increase in recycled water farmers can use to irrigate their crops due to the increase in supply contributions. On the other hand, the Guaro Plan has been suspended until further notice. In the Axarquia region, water transfers from Malaga city will be suspended from this Thursday 11 April.
– Prudence. Concluding the meeting, Angulo asked those present to remain prudent and responsible and stressed the importance of continuing with investments and awareness campaigns. It was concluded that the current measures will again be reviewed in June.
– Reservoirs continue to rise due to runoffs.
Meanwhile, the reservoir levels in Malaga province continue to rise. On Tuesday afternoon they were close to 164 cubic hectometres, an increase of 67 in just one month thanks to the contributions of storm Nelson late last month.
– La Concepción, which supplies much of the western strip of the Costa del Sol, leads the provincial reserves, with 39 hm3. Behind, Guadalteba (36.74 hm3); Viñuela (29.91); Guadalhorce (24.08), and Conde de Guadalhorce (22.77). Overall the reservoirs are holding around 27% of their total capacity. The ‘alunizajes’ gang on the Costa del Sol is busted- twenty robberies during their prison breaks: {Translation}
– Agents of the National Police and the Guardia Civil have arrested three alleged members of a gang of burglars to whom they attribute more than twenty robberies perpetrated on the Costa del Sol and in Cádiz. Those arrested are said to be the same people who last summer ransacked numerous shops in Estepona, Manilva and San Pedro Alcántara after smashing high-end cars – which had also been stolen – in their shop windows. According to investigators, the robberies took place practically every weekend and coincided with the prison leave of one of the suspects.
– The investigations began at the end of July following the commission of a burglary using the “alunizaje” method in an electronic goods shop in Estepona. In just a few days, the alleged perpetrators repeated the same manoeuvre in a jewellery shop located in the centre of San Luis de Sabinillas, in Manilva, from which they stole beads worth 15,285 euros. They then fled, leaving behind the vehicle they used in the robbery, which had been stolen hours earlier in the same locality.
– Not even a week went by when, as already published in this newspaper, it was the turn of San Pedro Alcántara, where two robberies took place in the very centre of the city and barely 24 hours apart. The first of these occurred at around 03.45 hours on Saturday 5 August in an Orange shop. Witnesses alerted the 112-Andalusia emergency service and the National Police that a vehicle had just broken into the shop window.
– Within minutes, the callers were able to observe four hooded individuals fleeing in another high-end car, according to the sources consulted. Apparently, the perpetrators left the car used to commit the break-in abandoned, so the tow truck was requested to remove it.
– In the early hours of the following morning, the burglars acted again, this time in a jewellery shop located just a few metres from the previous premises, also in the centre of San Pedro Alcántara. The noise of the impact again startled the neighbours, who immediately alerted the authorities. Once again, they warned that four men were involved.
– The luck of the aluniceros changed in September. In the early hours of the 4th of this month they tried to rob the Supermercado El Jamón in Sabinillas, the robbery being foiled by the patrols that were alerted. However, the perpetrators fled again in another car.
– A few days later they returned to Ronda, where they rammed a vehicle previously stolen in the La Deshesa neighbourhood into an Orange shop in Calle La Bolsa. The quick action of the police, once again, frustrated the thieves’ objective, which was to steal mobile phones, although they fled in another car that was waiting for them in the area.
– This criminal group has been attributed with the commission of 22 crimes, 12 break-ins in commercial establishments and 10 vehicle thefts in the space of just four months. The collaboration and coordination between the two police forces and the information obtained during the investigation led the agents to identify the members of the criminal group, establishing a series of services aimed at arresting its members.
– Finally, after an extensive police operation, one of the members of this criminal group was arrested on 18 August during the commission of one of the robberies under investigation in a supermarket in Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz), two others were arrested on 6 October when they were carrying out another robbery in an establishment in San Pedro de Alcántara (Málaga), and a fourth was charged as a suspect under investigation.
– The arrests were made in flagrante delicto after the criminal group had committed burglaries in both towns. The three detainees, of Spanish nationality and aged between 22 and 32, were brought before the courts for allegedly committing the crimes of robbery with force, vehicle theft and membership of a criminal organisation, and were remanded in custody. MALAGA PROVINCE

Companies in Malaga describe it as a “blow” that private pools cannot be filled: {Translation}
– The companies in Malaga consider it a “blow” that private swimming pools cannot be filled, after the president of the Junta de Andalucía saw it as “foreseeable” that the filling of communal pools in the province of Malaga would be allowed, until now prohibited by restrictions, but “very difficult” in the others.
– This has been assessed to EFE from the Platform of companies and self-employed of Malaga in the sectors of gardening, swimming pools, nurseries, lifeguards and tourist flats that denounce the discrimination between companies in the face of the drought, while from the College of Property Administrators have expressed caution in this regard. The platform – which brings together almost 400 companies – indicates that there are more than 78,000 swimming pools in the province of Malaga according to the Cadastre. In this sense, the manager of Piscinas Jiménez, Inmaculada Jiménez, assures that more than 50% of this type of facilities are private, so she does not understand why some could be filled and others not.
*Water parks*
– Nor does she understand why water parks, which are preparing to open, can operate despite the consumption they entail. On the other hand, in houses, without specifying so much, they cannot and he recalls that last summer there was less water and pools were opened and that there was already more water than the previous year before the Easter rains.
– She also adds that in municipalities on the Costa del Sol such as Benalmádena, the water meters of the swimming pools have been sealed since October, but the hotels “have a free hand” and their aquatic facilities are refilled. They also argue that if there is no water, there should be none for anyone. Therefore, they ask to be allowed to operate at least during the summer and ask that if many of their clients, foreign tourists who arrive at Christmas and in summer, have not used water for months, “why can’t they use their 200 litres to fill the pool and water their gardens? She was referring to the 200 litres of water per inhabitant per day to which the water supply has risen in several areas of Andalusia when the restrictions were relaxed after the last rains.
*Jobs at risk*
– Similarly, he points out that many jobs are at risk, including that of lifeguards. In this sector, a total of 400 companies have joined the platform of those affected by the drought decree and he points out that in this area of Malaga “in July or August the swimming pools are of prime necessity”. Andrés Marín, from the gardening sector, considers it “illogical” and “absurd” to close private swimming pools. Furthermore, he points out that if a family is able to save water from its quota, it could pour water into the aquatic installation. On the other hand, he explains that meetings are pending with the town councils, as they have to decide what to do with the community pools in order to comply with the 200 litres of water per inhabitant per day provided by the Junta.
*Irrigation*
– Marín also states that they do not know if they will be able to use water for irrigation and are awaiting official information on the matter. The Malaga and Melilla Association of Property Administrators remains cautious and is waiting to see how the authorised uses are materialised in the Official Gazette of the Junta de Andalucía or in the municipal ordinances when the town councils decide. TORROX

The storm ‘Nelson’ claimed the life of a woman dragged by a river in Torrox when she tried to cross it: {Translation, summary}
– The firmness with which the storm Nelson lashed the Mediterranean coast during Easter week claimed the life of a woman, swept away by a current of water when she tried to cross a river with her vehicle in the town of Torrox, as confirmed to this newspaper by the Civil Guard.
– The victim, aged 64 and of Dutch nationality, lived in a country house in the municipality of Malaga. She used her car to travel and ford the river Güi, which runs next to the farmhouse and through which little water used to flow due to the lack of rainfall. At least 24 hours before Easter Saturday, the woman tried to cross the river again. By then, however, it had risen significantly and the current was strong.
– After the events, the woman’s family reported her disappearance when she did not return to her home and there was no news of her whereabouts. Agents from the main post of the Guardia Civil in Torrox began an investigation to try to clarify the circumstances of the case.
– On 30 March, some people alerted that there was a lifeless person in the westernmost area of El Morche beach. Officers from the Torrox Local Police, who located the documentation of the deceased in collaboration with Sos Desaparecidos, and the Guardia Civil, verified that it was the woman who had disappeared the previous day.

RINCÓN DE LA VICTORIA

Rincón de la Victoria organizes free tourist and leisure experiences for half a thousand seniors in the municipality: {Translation, summary}
– The Department of Social Welfare of the Rincón de la Victoria Town Council has organised a series of free tourist and leisure experiences for people over 65 years of age in the municipality.
– These activities, “which will be held during the months of May and June, will be enjoyed by some 500 elderly people belonging to our senior’s active participation centres”, says the councillor for the area, Olga Cervantes.
– The excursions will be organised by the company City Sightseeing, with a programme that will begin with a trip from the municipality to Malaga in the tourist bus. Once there, the seniors will enjoy a boat trip around the bay, including a picnic on board. Once the route is over, they will also be able to enjoy other activities with a visit to two of Malaga’s museums and a flamenco show.
– On the other hand, on the 21st of April, a hundred elderly people will attend the Encuentro Nacional de Hermandades y Cofradías San Isidro in Benamocarra, where they will also be able to taste rice and avocado, and attend a bullfight. (No, I’m not promoting a bullfight. I am warning seriors that are considering this activity what to expect. So no hate-mail please. -Ed)
– It is also planned that a hundred elderly people from the municipality will travel to Ronda to visit the facilities of Reservatauro through the Provincial Council of Malaga.
– “From the Social Welfare Department of Rincón de la Victoria we will continue to offer a varied programme to stimulate the activity of our seniors. The next actions will be to offer free experiences to the elderly with tours of the tourist train through the municipality,” says the councillor. TORREMOLINOS

Big Brother Is Watching You! How is this possible without a vote? Torremolinos installs 21 video surveillance cameras as part of town-wide security crackdown, 24 more on the way:
– Torremolinos has installed 21 video surveillance cameras as part of a town-wide security crackdown announced by the town hall in December.
– Mayor Margarita del Cid, announced the measure after meeting with police, and said funding from grants and programmes from different institutions will hopefully increase the number of cameras. She said the aim is to improve security and provide data management tools to analyse the levels of vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
– A total of 242,469 euros was invested for the first stage, with an allocation from the central government. However, the aim is, as the councillor pointed out, to continue with the strategy and reaching 45 video surveillance cameras. *Editor comment*
– The Junta’s data storage has been repeatedly hacked in the past. They store their data on “the cloud” and in gov’t data servers, which have poor track records for security. Andalucia’s police accounts, traffic cam monitors, and employment & court records have all been hacked in the last 2 years. They have a terrible track record for data security. Collecting data on law abiding citizens’ daily activities, without permission of said individuals, is a serious abuse of authority, a violation of your privacy, and very possibly a crime! And if “facial recognition” functions are included in the surveillance, without the authorization of the observed, this can constitute a serious violation of fundamental civil liberties. In June 2023, the European Parliament made history when it voted in favour of a total ban on live facial recognition in public spaces.
– They are spending hundreds of thousands of tax payer Euros on expensive projects the public never voted on. In addition, the Junta says it receives, “funding from grants and programmes from different institutions.” The only reason corporate grants are given is to have access to that data. So who are these grant providers? What will be done with this shared data? Will it be passed on to the partners of the grant providers? And then to the partners of the partners? It may as well be public. Clearly the authorities are overstepping their bounds. They must be reminded, they work for the public, NOT the other way around.
– One recent example of the danger of this type of data collection by gov’ts is how Israel has been using an Artificial Intelligence system ironically named “Gospel” to analyse public surveillance data to identify and target Palestinians for drone attacks. This has resulted in many more innocent bystanders being killed than the actual targets sought; in addition, the estimated 10% target error rate was found to be acceptable!

Health withdraws all batches of a food supplement for having melatonin above the maximum allowed limit: {Translation, summary}
– The Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS) has ordered a marketing ban and the withdrawal from the market of all copies of the product Melatonin 7, capsules. The AEMPS has learned of its marketing by the company 7 Nutrition, from Poland. Melatonin 7, capsules is marketed as a food supplement, despite the fact that the competent authorities have not been notified of its placing on the market, in breach of the regulations in force for this type of product. As indicated on its labeling, it contains the pharmacologically active substance melatonin in a dose of 5 milligrams per capsule.
– There are medicines authorized for marketing in Spain whose active ingredient is melatonin with a dose of 2 milligrams of said active ingredient, a lower quantity than the product Melatonin 7, capsules, according to the AEMPS.
– Due to all the risks detected, as well as the fact that the article has not been subject to evaluation and authorization prior to its marketing by this Agency, the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products has taken the precautionary measure of prohibiting its marketing and requesting its withdrawal from the market.
