SPAIN

Desperate Sanchez tries to delay elections: {Trans, summary}
– Desperate Pedro Sanchez is fighting to delay elections and cling to power at La Moncloa for as long as possible, if only for a few extra weeks. Despite losing the support of his allies and failing to pass any budgets, his government is searching for legal ways to extend the current term.
– Officials are studying whether the four-year mandate should be counted from when the new Parliament first met in August 2023, rather than from the date of the July 2023 elections. This shift could allow him several extra weeks in office.
– Sanchez has agreements with the PNV and Junts that there will be no “super election Sunday”, meaning he has promised to avoid holding general elections on the same day as the regional and local elections scheduled for May 2027. Yet his nationalist partners insist the political cycle has ended and want him to call general elections before the end of this year.
– His strategy is to use every legal possibility to remain until the last permitted day and portray himself as a leader who survives every crisis. This focus on extending his time in power puts his personal image of resistance first, even at the expense of his party ahead of difficult regional elections. The legal report requested by Moncloa is part of a clear plan to stretch the legislature to its maximum limit, although the situation is becoming increasingly difficult for those parties still backing him. The lack of a budget forces the government to authorize 200 million in loans to save the payrolls of mutual insurance companies and the Social Security service: {Trans, summary}
– The Government, after failing to present Budgets since 2023, has been forced to authorise €200 million in supplementary and extraordinary credits to keep Social Security mutual societies and common services functioning. The need for 39 budget enlargements underlines the extent of the parliamentary paralysis and the Executive’s inability to approve accounts for the whole legislature. These stopgap measures have been used to cover payrolls, routine running costs and unforeseen investments that should have been planned years ago.
– In the first half of the year, credit operations totalled more than €197 million, exposing a system that is being managed through improvisation rather than proper budgeting. The legal reporting framework is being followed, but the scale of the repeated injections points to deeper financial strain, with Social Security also carrying heavy debt and a structural deficit in temporary incapacity management. ANDALUCÍA

Same Old Career Politicians Again– The PSOE-A confirms Montero, Espadas and Susana Díaz as its candidates for senator by appointment of the Andalusian Parliament: {Trans, summary}
– The Socialist PSOE has nominated Juan Espadas and Susana Díaz, the senators appointed by the Andalusian Parliament, to retain their seats in the upper house following the regional elections of May 17. The Secretary General of the PSOE-A, María Jesús Montero, has also been selected as a senator representing the Andalusian Parliament in the new legislature.
– Thus, Juan Espadas – who is currently the spokesperson for the PSOE in the Senate – and Susana Díaz are again proposed by the Socialist Group, while the novelty with respect to their candidates from the previous legislature lies in María Jesús Montero, the current general secretary of the Andalusian federation, who, in this way, will foreseeably return to the Cortes Generales after resigning last month from the seat she held in Congress as a deputy for Seville. Andalusia is suffering from “an avalanche of potatoes that the market is unable to absorb” as supermarkets maintain near record high prices: {Trans, summary}
– Andalucía’s potato growers are facing a severe market surplus after winter storms delayed planting across the region, causing almost all crops to reach the market at the same time. The resulting oversupply has overwhelmed wholesalers, leaving large quantities unsold, with some potatoes being placed in cold storage, some expected to remain in the fields, and others sold at heavy losses.
– The situation is worsened by new harvests from other parts of Spain and unsold French potatoes, creating a wider European glut. Wholesale prices have collapsed from around 40 to 45 cents per kilogram to as little as 20 to 25 cents, well below production costs, with farmers reporting losses of 40 to 50%. Despite these sharply reduced wholesale prices caused by the surplus, consumers have not seen equivalent reductions in retail prices, highlighting the continuing gap between what producers receive and what shoppers ultimately pay in supermarkets and shops.
– “Retail potato prices remain high despite wholesale prices collapsing because of oversupply. Supermarket prices are averaging around €2.33/kg, while growers are receiving only around €0.20-€0.25/kg, leaving a huge gap between producer and consumer prices. The trend is upward: the average price of potatoes has risen by 6.3% in the last 30 days. Justice Delayed Is Justice Denied– Victims of Adamuz say “They tell us about 15 or 16 years of legal proceedings, and this scares us”: {Trans, summary}
– Six months after the Adamuz derailment that killed 46 people, survivors and families face compounded suffering: unresolved physical and psychological harms, opaque and slow compensation processes, ineffective victim support offices, and perceived refusal by political authorities to accept responsibility. The victims’ association says Adif’s insurer has placed funds in court to avoid interest, while regional grants remain unpaid. Calls to suspend the national rail network as unsafe were met with media reassurances rather than concrete action. Trade unions and the Huelva Chamber of Commerce back safety concerns and discourage train use.
– Victims fear legal proceedings will be protracted, associations from prior major disasters report criminal trials lasting 10-16 years, because complex technical inquiries, overlapping jurisdictions and political delays elongate investigations. That prospect means survivors and bereaved families could endure years of uncertainty and emotional toll before accountability is reached; delayed adjudication would thus functionally deny timely justice, compounding their suffering. ÁRCHEZ

The forest fire in Árchez is under control: {Trans}
– The forest fire that broke out last Friday in the Barranco de la Fuente area, in the municipality of Árchez, was brought under control during the early hours of Sunday, according to the Infoca Plan.
– As reported by the Árchez Town Hall on its official Facebook page, firefighters are continuing to work on mopping up and extinguishing the blaze with a team of 10 forest firefighters, aiming to completely put out the fire. The fire is now under control, meaning the entire perimeter is secure, although some hotspots may still remain within the area.
– The fire started on Friday in the Barranco de la Fuente area and, during the first few hours, forced the temporary confinement of some 4,400 residents of Cómpeta and the preventive evacuation of 162 people living in scattered homes in Árchez, Cómpeta, and Canillas de Albaida. All of them have now been able to return to their homes. Source, Spanish: https://www.axarquiaplus.es/controlado-el-incendio-forestal-de-archez/

UK

Burnham to scrap digital UK ID to focus on cost of living in first major policy pledge: {Summary}
– Andy Burnham {pic} will abandon government-issued digital ID plans upon becoming prime minister, redirecting funds to cost-of-living support and local economies. Initially introduced by Keir Starmer to combat illegal immigration and modernize services, the scheme faced opposition, including a 3-million-signature petition, prompting the government to drop the mandatory requirement and make the ID voluntary instead. “Critics like Dame Karen Bradley called its rollout a “fiasco.” Burnham’s office emphasizes reprioritizing resources for everyday priorities. Conservatives accuse him of claiming credit for an already-dropped mandatory ID, while Lib Dems welcome the decision. Burnham also plans new North Sea oil and gas drilling, adhering to Labour’s 2024 manifesto pledge to honor existing licences. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch dismissed his agenda as “airy fairy,” urging tough decisions. Burnham becomes PM on Monday. Full article: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c5y08z25q8eo

UKRAINE WAR

Russia launches one of its biggest attacks since the start of the war, and Ukraine responds by heavily bombing its ‘ghost fleet’: {Trans, summary}
– In one of the largest Russian strikes on Kyiv since the war began, over forty missiles and more than one hundred and twenty drones killed at least one person and injured sixteen. Residential buildings suffered severe damage and fires, prompting widespread emergency responses. Ukrainian air defence shot down seventeen ballistic missiles, one guided missile, and one hundred and eight drones.
– Mayor Klitschko reported damage across several districts, including student housing, commercial premises, warehouses, supermarkets, and administrative buildings, with vehicle fires and shattered windows. Rescue teams evacuated multiple civilians. President Zelensky noted that Russia had used nearly 1,450 drones, over 1,640 guided bombs, and ninety-nine missiles against Ukrainian regions this week, and urged allies to accelerate air defence deliveries.
– In retaliation, Ukraine attacked Russian shadow-fleet tankers in the Black Sea, destroying the ‘Avero’ and striking the ‘Asia’ and ‘Nissos’ at Novorossiysk, with no reports yet on casualties or spills. Ukrainian forces also hit three oil depots in Stavropol and thirteen energy facilities in Crimea and occupied eastern and southern Ukraine, escalating cross-border strikes amid mounting pressure on Ukrainian interceptors. HEALTH

María de los Ángeles García Rescalvo, a graduate in Medicine and Surgery, will be the new manager of the Andalusian Health Service (SAS), replacing Valle García: {Trans, summary}
– The 13th Andalusian legislature has begun with significant changes at the Ministry of Health. Following the resignation a few days ago of the previous manager of the Andalusian Health Service (SAS), Valle García, the regional government confirmed that a change was “planned and agreed upon.”
– The position will be filled by María de los Ángeles García Rescalvo {pic}, until now the manager of the Virgen de las Nieves University Hospital in Granada (Dec 2019 – July 2026). She holds a degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Granada and is a specialist in Anesthesiology, Resuscitation, and Pain Management.

Football News- Spain edge Argentina after extra time to win 2nd World Cup title:
– Ferran Torres clinched Spain’s second World Cup title with an extra-time winner against reigning world champions Argentina in a bad-tempered final marred by Enzo Fernández’s red card for a reckless 90th minute foul on Spain’s Pau Cubarsí.
– Barcelona forward Torres, a 62nd-minute substitute for Mikel Oyarzabal, sealed a 1-0 win for the European champions when he struck from close range in the 106th minute after Nico Williams had headed Pedro Porro’s cross into his path.
– Spain’s dominance was such that Argentina did not register their first shot at goal until Lionel Messi had an attempt blocked in the 117th minute. Full article: https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/soccer/spain-edge-argentina-after-extra-time-to-win-2nd-world-cup-title/ar-AA28frjW
