ANDALUCÍA

Junta to maintain strict water use restrictions across south of Spain as latest rains ‘do not solve the drought’:
– The Easter rains that fell throughout the Andalucía region have helped ease the situation but the drought still remains critical, a top Junta official has said.
– The regional minister of agriculture Carmen Crespo said the Junta’s tight water restrictions will remain in effect in a bid to guarantee supply and further savings. Following a meeting on Tuesday 2 April, officials spoke about the current situation where regional reservoirs, at their most critical level were below 20% capacity, but are now almost double that at 39.9%
– Crespo was however in favour of making restrictions more lenient. This will be specified in the drought committees that the different river basin districts will hold next week, once the contributions of run-off water can be measured.
– Andalusian reservoirs are on average 39.9% full, however, in the Guadalquivir basin, which affects two thirds of the region, it is 43.1% full, while the Tinto-Odiel-Piedras-Chanza basin, in the province of Huelva, is 49.7% full.
– It’s a stark contrast with the Mediterranean basin (27.4% full), or the Guadalete-Barbate basin in Cadiz (27.2%). The Guadalquivir basin has reached a situation of normality, while the Mediterranean basin – which includes the Costa del Sol – has only managed to go from crisis status to severe.

Socialist PSOE-A calls for the promotion of small game hunting in Andalucia and the gov’t partially approves it: {Translation, summary}
– The Commission for Sustainability, Environment and Blue Economy has partially approved a Proposition of Law (PNL) proposed by the Socialist Parliamentary Group regarding the promotion of the Andalusian Pact for Hunting through the approval of the measures contained therein.
– The points of the PNL were approved with the votes in favour of the PSOE and Vox, and with the abstention of the rest. Thus, the following points have been approved: * The promotion of the Andalusian Hunting Pact and the measures contained in it through the immediate approval and implementation of a plan for the recovery of small game hunting in Andalucia
* The promotion of measures for the institutional promotion and dissemination of the social, cultural and economic values of hunting and the increase in the next budget of the material, personal and economic resources of the Andalucian Hunting Institute and the hunting departments of the territorial delegations of the Junta de Andalucía.
– On the other hand, the points relating to the implementation of a study to scientifically accredit the viability of the hunting of wild game, the commitment to the socialisation of hunting and the approval of the Plan for Scientific Research Applied to Hunting, were rejected with the votes against of the PP-A. In addition, the Socialist Group rejected the amendments tabled to the Proposition No of Law by the PP-A and Vox groups.
– The Socialist Group, which has proposed the PNL, has argued that hunting “well managed, offers benefits for society”, so it is committed to “a sustainable hunting activity, inclusive and linked to the rural environment”, giving as an example the National Strategy for Hunting Management. Thus, it has demanded a “definitive” response from the Junta to the issues demanded by the hunting sector and that it “materialise” the regulatory changes.
– The PP and Vox have highlighted that the PSOE “subscribes to the Hunting Pact while supporting animalistic rules such as the Animal Welfare Law that directly attacks the identity of Andalusian hunting”, while it has questioned “the word of the socialists and their commitment to defend the sector”. “They change their ideals and their views for political gain,” Vox spokesman added. EUROPE

Germany, France and Poland call for the “massive rearmament” of Europe to counter “Russian imperialism”: {Translation, summary}
– In the absence of threats, Europe’s defence industry has long been neglected. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, however, calls for a rethink of the sector. This is the thesis of a joint article published today by the foreign ministers of Germany, Annalena Baerbock, France, Stéphane Séjourné, and Poland, Radoslaw Sikorski. In the face of Russian imperialism, they call for Europe’s “full industrial potential” to be used for “massive rearmament”. “We must use all the industrial potential of our continent to improve our military capabilities,” they write on the news portal Politico.
– According to the heads of diplomacy of the Weimar Triangle countries, this permanent rearmament requires binding long-term contracts with clear timetables, a “certain level of ambition” and firm financial commitments and purchase guarantees from European governments. The target of spending two per cent of gross domestic product on defence has already become “just a starting point”, in his view. “The US has long borne a greater burden than the rest of our alliance, but collective defence is ours, it must be our joint effort,” they say, in a text published on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the North Atlantic military alliance.
– “In this regard”, they add, “it is necessary to strengthen European defence and thus contribute to transatlantic security”. The three agree that “grey areas and concessions to Putin are naïve and the Kremlin leader sees them only as an invitation to aggressive behaviour and the use of military force”. With regard to Russian President Vladimir Putin and his war of aggression in Ukraine, they reiterate that NATO must continue to show a clear position: “For Europe to live in peace, Russian imperialism must be stopped”. {Ah yes, the old “We must wage war to prevent war” argument. -Ed.} Source, Spanish: https://www.abc.es/internacional/alemania-francia-polonia-llaman-rearme-masivo-europa-20240403113637-nt.html

CANADA

Trudeau Admits That Canada Is Being Overwhelmed By Mass Immigration:
– In a rare admission that all is not well in the socialist paradise of the north, Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated this week that the country has seen a ‘massive spike in temporary immigrants’ which is ‘far beyond what Canada can absorb.’ The nation’s percentage of temporary migrants (illegals using asylum loopholes to dodge proper immigration standards) has jumped from 2% of the total population in 2017 to over 7.5% of the total population in 2024.
– In 2023 Canada marked its most rapid population growth in 66 years, with migrants making up over 97% of all new residents. Only 2% came from a natural increase. Canada’s population is 38 million people, around the same size as the population of California. It does not take more than a few million migrants on welfare benefits and subsidies to cause chaos.

TECH

Ghost calls? Find out who is behind those mysterious calls: {Translation}
– Receiving a phone call from an unknown number has become commonplace for millions of people around the world. In fact, there are fewer and fewer calls of a personal nature, as we are nowadays engrossed in instant messaging applications: the new generations find voice conversations invasive, which in many cases cause them anxiety (known as telephonophobia) due to the obligation to respond instantly, without time to think about an answer.
– So who is on the other end of the line? Most calls come from switchboards: internet operators and insurance companies compete daily to win new customers with offers of all kinds; campaigns that often come camouflaged as surveys or are directly articulated through deception. The Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU) has on several occasions denounced operators of gas or electricity companies who, with the excuse of a false change of distribution company, confuse customers in order to get them to abandon their long-standing electricity company.
– Then there are, of course, the fraudulent calls made by cybercriminals using the technique known as ‘phishing’: they collect our data (through the multiple leaks that occur on the internet) to gain the trust of the victims while pretending to be their respective banking institutions or a transport company. They then convince them to install malicious applications on their devices, provide passwords or make one-off payments, which can ultimately drain their bank account.
– What if I pick up the phone and no one is talking?
For some time now, however, the predominant anonymous calls are those where, when you pick up the phone, no one speaks. What’s more, after a few seconds of talking to the air, the caller cuts off the call suddenly (sometimes this can happen just a second after answering, after hearing a shrill beep).
– Cybersecurity experts have coined the term ‘phantom calls’ to refer to these types of interlocutions, with many wondering what they are hiding: do they harm the recipient in any way by the mere fact of answering them? Sometimes. The key is not to get back in touch with the number that has called, when the scam known as ‘wangiri’ or missed call would take place: scammers make calls of a few seconds or call and hang up repeatedly on the victim’s phone; the victim, thinking it may be an emergency, ends up contacting the offender on what is in fact a premium rate number. The result is a hefty charge on your phone bill, which you won’t discover until you receive the statement at the end of the month.
– Of course, ‘phantom calls’ can also be the result of an automated ‘marketing’ technique: a ‘bot’ (a computer programme) is in charge of massively calling a list of telephone numbers in order to discard those that do not answer. Those who answer, however, become part of a new list: the list of users who will be contacted preferentially to receive all kinds of commercial proposals. Thus, if we answer an unknown number and there is no one on the line or they hang up on us immediately, it is most likely that we have told a machine that we usually do the same thing when someone calls us: hang up; so we are ideal for continuing to receive telephone advertising.
– On other occasions they may call and hang up on us, without saying a word, in order to find out what time we are usually available. These ‘bots’ dial a series of random numbers and record the time the user answered; this information is then fed into a database used by the operators of certain companies to find out what time of day we are most likely to answer.
– These last two cases do not entail any financial risk for us, of course, but they could lead to a barrage of annoying and insistent commercial calls. To avoid this, the OCU recommends signing up for the well-known Robinson List, although some users are wary: they continued to be harassed by telephone even months after registering. The only effective option, then, seems to be to block all unknown numbers that contact us (if we find out that they belong to a switchboard or that they return silence for an answer).
– Identifying a ‘spam’ call. Fortunately, most Android phones are pre-installed with an application that automatically detects spam calls and marks them as such on the screen, without the need for us to answer. These warnings are highly accurate, as they are often based on reports from other users.
– For their part, iPhone users can cut through the clutter by automatically muting any incoming call from an unknown number (via ‘Phone’ > ‘Mute unknown’ in the ‘Settings’ menu). By enabling this option, these communications will be automatically sent to voicemail and displayed in the ‘Recent’ list.
– Alternatively, you can download one of the many applications designed to identify unknown (but not hidden) numbers, which are impossible to decipher. One of the most widely used is ‘TrueCaller’ for iOS and Android, which has over a billion downloads in the Google app shop. It is just as legitimate to enter the number in Google’s search engine (someone has probably written about it) or to go to websites such as ‘ListaSpam’ or ‘Who called’, where thousands of numbers are stored along with comments from other users. Google Warns of Android Zero-Day Flaws in Pixel Phones Exploited by Forensic Companies:
– Google has disclosed that two Android security flaws impacting its Pixel smartphones have been exploited in the wild by forensic companies (data collectors/resellers). These are high-severity zero-day vulnerabilities.
– “Zero-day” is a broad term that describes recently discovered security vulnerabilities that hackers can use to attack systems. The term “zero-day” refers to the fact that the vendor or developer has only just learned of the flaw – which means they have “zero days” to fix it. A zero-day attack takes place when hackers exploit the flaw before developers have a chance to address it.*
– While the tech giant did not reveal any other information about the nature of the attacks exploiting these shortcomings, researchers at GrapheneOS said they “are being actively exploited in the wild by forensic companies.”
– The disclosure comes more than two months after the GrapheneOS team revealed that forensic companies are exploiting firmware vulnerabilities that impact Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy phones to steal data and spy on users whenever the device is not turned off.

TRAVEL

The spectacular Gollizno route in Granada between suspension bridges and wooden walkways in the mountains: {Translation}
– In the province of Granada, one of the most entertaining trails is the Ruta del Gollizno, in the town of Moclín, which has just over 1,700 inhabitants and is in the Poniente region, some 50 kilometres from the capital.
– The adjective “entertaining” is well earned because it is a trail where the traveller has a good time. It has a little bit of adventure, thanks to its suspension bridges and wooden footbridges, but at the same time it is suitable for everyone, it is not dangerous at all. What’s more, the trail allows the walker to be in direct contact with nature and with some really beautiful landscapes.
– It is a circular path and it is easy to get to the starting point because it is well signposted. From the centre of the village go down Esperanza street and soon you will see signs indicating the proximity of the PR-A 84, which is the official name. Once you reach the starting point, you can walk in one direction or the other, because, as we have already said, it is a circular route.
– Like almost all trails, there are ups and downs. The ascent is not to everyone’s taste, but it is perhaps rewarding to know that, once you reach the Olivares viewpoint, the views are magnificent. You can see the Sierra Nevada, which lives up to its name until the thaw arrives in May or June, and a little further on there is a recreation area where you can stop and regain your strength.
– The route continues and to continue you have to cross a wooden suspension bridge, which is not dangerous, over which you reach the gorge known as the Tajos de la Hoz. You will clearly see that the vegetation here is quite different. The olive trees give way to leafier species such as poplars.
– Then you reach one of the aforementioned footbridges, also made of wood, which runs over the river Velillos. It is always a spectacular spot, but even more so in spring, because in summer it is drier, the flow is minimal and, of course, it is hot.
– The next stop, after a powerful but bearable ascent, is the Fuente de la Corcuela. Nearby there are some caves where cave paintings have been found, specifically from the Neolithic period, indicating that the ancients already knew it was a good place to live. It is possible to visit them, although this involves a detour.
– Whether or not you do so, you then have to return to the main path and tackle the last part of the route, which allows you to see the castle of Moclín and the remains of its walls. Next to them is the Iglesia de la Encarnación, where the town’s main relic is kept: the painting of the Santísimo Cristo del Paño (Holy Christ of the Cloth).
