The judge believes that Zapatero “has failed to refute” the “rational indications of criminality”; Zap refuses to testify about the confiscated jewels: {Trans, summary}
– Former Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero became the first former prime minister in Spain’s democratic history to testify as a suspect before a judge on Wednesday, accused of leading an influence-peddling network to facilitate the bailout of Plus Ultra.
– Although Zapatero denied leading any scheme in favour of the airline before the National Court, Judge José Luis Calama Calama ruled that the former prime minister “has failed to refute” the “rational indications of criminality” against him, though he declined to impose precautionary measures, finding no risk of flight.
– In his ruling, Calama highlighted the discovery in Zapatero’s office of nearly 80 pieces of jewelry valued at over €1,300,000, “without, to date, any proof of their origin or the corresponding tax and customs clearance.” Regarding this matter, Zapatero invoked his right to remain silent, but stated that he would provide explanations within a week or ten days.
– National Court Judge José Luis Calama has rejected the precautionary measures requested by the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office and private plaintiffs to mitigate the risk of flight by former President José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero . The judge did not order the confiscation of his passport or require him to appear in court every 15 days, as requested by the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office, the People’s Party (PP), and Citizens; nor did he order his provisional imprisonment, as proposed by Vox, Hazte Oír, Iustitia Europa, and Liberum. In the ruling issued this Wednesday at midday, the judge reasoned that Zapatero is a person of “public notoriety” and, therefore, it would be difficult for him to evade justice. ANDALUCÍA

Andalusia celebrates its first month of blockade since the elections- a new countdown begins in search of an agreement before June 29: {Trans, summary}
– One month after the 17 May election, Andalucía remains without a confirmed investiture date as negotiations continue between the PP and Vox. Both parties have kept discussions largely confidential, releasing little information about meetings, proposals or progress.
– The process became more complicated after the formation of the Andalusian Parliament on 11 June. The PP had hoped to reach an initial understanding by offering Vox positions within the parliamentary bureau, but Vox rejected the proposal, leading to a temporary arrangement. Some adjustments to bureau positions are still expected as negotiations continue.
– The next formal step will be consultations led by Parliament Speaker Jesús Aguirre with all parliamentary groups before Juanma Moreno {pic} is formally nominated to attempt to form a government. This nomination must occur before 29 June, although the subsequent investiture debate could take place later in the summer.
– The main points of disagreement remain immigration policy and whether Vox should enter the regional government. The PP prefers governing alone, while Vox argues that Andalucía should follow the pattern seen in other regions where it has entered coalition governments. Meanwhile, left-wing parties continue to reject abstention to allow Moreno’s election. Source, Spanish: https://www.laopiniondemalaga.es/nacional/2026/06/17/andalucia…

– The personnel remain on site to complete the operation and extinguish the fire. Specifically, a group of forest firefighters, an environmental agent, and a fire engine are present.
– Initially, a light helicopter, two groups of forest firefighters, an operations technician, an environmental agent, and a fire engine were deployed. Source, Spanish: https://www.europapress.es/andalucia/malaga-00356/noticia-controlado…

ALHAURÍN EL GRANDE

Suspect arrested in Alhaurín el Grande accused of six home robberies, including 2 armed home invasions of occupied properties, plus thefts from farms and vehicles: {Trans, summary}
– A months-long investigation has led to the arrest of a person suspected of committing several property crimes in different parts of Alhaurín el Grande, mainly thefts, burglaries from homes and thefts from inside vehicles.
– The suspect targeted vehicles parked on plots of land, isolated homes and private estates, stealing easily transportable items such as small electronic devices and other valuable belongings.
– Two particularly serious incidents involved the alleged offender entering private estates while the occupants were inside. In both cases, after being discovered by the owners, he allegedly resorted to intimidation with a bladed weapon to ensure the completion of the theft and to facilitate his subsequent escape.
– Officers gathered various pieces of evidence which, together with the geographical proximity of the offences and the same modus operandi employed, enabled them to link the suspect to a total of six property crimes, two of them allegedly committed using intimidation.
– The judicial authority ultimately ordered that he be remanded in custody. As a result of the operation, six robberies recorded in recent months in Alhaurín el Grande have been solved, strengthening security in the municipality’s rural and dispersed areas. To fight the flames an operation has been deployed consisting of two helicopters, three groups of forest firefighters, a fire engine, two operations technicians and an environmental agent.

SEVILLA

Cat Traps? The El Cuervo (Seville) City Council reports mutilations of cats due to the presence of illegal traps in colonies: {Trans, summary}
– El Cuervo Town Council has reported a suspected case of organised animal cruelty to Seprona (Nature Protection Service of the Civil Guard) after several cats from municipal cat colonies were seriously injured by concealed traps. The incidents occurred over a period of several weeks and required emergency intervention by municipal services. Veterinary teams reportedly had to perform severe amputations on multiple cats to save their lives.
– Animal Welfare councillor Isamar Hurtado publicly condemned the attacks and confirmed that the matter has been referred to the judicial authorities. Volunteers associated with local cat rescue groups reported finding multiple similar traps hidden in different areas of the town, leading them to believe there may be an ongoing and coordinated threat.
– The council has submitted veterinary reports and evidence concerning the traps to support an investigation aimed at identifying those responsible. Residents have been urged to remain vigilant, report suspicious activity and notify authorities if further traps are discovered. CÓRDOBA

Watch Your Kids At The Pool- Police are investigating an adult’s attempted drowning of a child in a swimming pool: {Trans, summary}
– The National Police have opened an investigation to clarify the causes of an alleged attempted drowning of a child of about ten years old by a man on Sunday in the swimming pool of the Figueroa Club in the capital of Cordoba. Specifically, the incident took place at about 7:10 p.m., when the child was bathing with his friends while the mother remained in the grassy area.
– At one point, a commotion arose on the premises, which led several club members to alert him that his son was vomiting. Although he initially thought it might be an allergic reaction or an upset stomach, the boy confessed to his mother that a man who was next to him in the pool had tried to drown him under the pretext of playing “drowning.” According to the minor’s account, the individual forcibly pushed him to the bottom and, once there, placed his knee on his head to prevent him from surfacing for an extended period of time.
– The boy, who managed to break free from his attacker to breathe, bled as a result of the assault. Several eyewitnesses corroborated the boy’s account, and the facility’s lifeguard had to intervene to provide first aid.
– Other bathers stated, according to the complaint, that the suspect was not a regular at the pool. Following the incident, the National Police were immediately notified, and officers arrived at the scene to identify those involved and inform the family of the legal steps to take. HEALTH

More than 550 people opted for euthanasia in Spain during 2025, according to the Ministry of Health: {Trans, summary}
– A total of 565 people received the benefit of help to die in Spain during 2025, a figure equivalent to 0.13% of the deaths registered in the country, that is, one in every 750 deaths, according to data provided by the autonomous communities and cities.
– Since the law came into effect five years ago, a total of 1,668 people have opted for euthanasia. The provisional figures also show a steady increase in requests for assisted dying: to date, 3,716 requests have been recorded, 1,284 of which were made in 2025.
– Thus, among the 1,284 applications registered, neurological conditions represent 31%, second only to oncological conditions. However, this distribution is reversed among those who ultimately receive the benefit: neurological diseases account for 46%, while oncological conditions represent around 30%; 83.9 % of those who received the benefit were over 60 years old. Furthermore, 51% received it in a hospital, 35% at home, and the remaining 14% in long-term care facilities. In 98% of cases, it was administered by a healthcare team.
– In terms of international comparison, the provision of assisted dying services in Spain remains significantly lower than in other countries with similar legal frameworks. While in Spain the mortality rate due to assisted dying is 0.13%, in the Netherlands it reaches 5.96%, in Canada 5.10%, and in Belgium 4%. This difference is also reflected in the volume of services provided: 565 in Spain in 2025 , compared to 16,499 in Canada and 10,341 in the Netherlands.
