Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

Editor’s Note On AI Use: Years ago I claimed I would never use Artificial Intelligence (AI) generated content in DigameXtra. However, as AI now dominates the news pages and search results, it has become unavoidable and won’t be going away any time soon. There is no way to know if articles I post from other sources are AI created or not. Also, AI is now indispensable as a research tool for all editors; the old search engines are rubbish now. I will do my best to fact-check & moderate AI content. l will flag content I create with the aid of AI as such. However, I, or AI, may make occasional mistakes. If so, I will correct them asap, as with the MOT article last week. Welcome to the Brave New World! -Ed.

SPAIN

The increase in VAT on fuels to 21% will cost Spaniards 10 cents more per liter of gasoline and 2.8 cents more per liter of diesel: {Trans, summary}
– The Council of Ministers agreed to reinstate the standard 21% VAT rate for gasoline and diesel , ending the reduced rate of 10% that had been in place since March as part of the extraordinary measures adopted to mitigate the economic impact of the conflict in the Middle East. At the same time, the government is beginning the gradual withdrawal of the reduction in the special tax on hydrocarbons.
– According to calculations by the Spanish Fuel Industry Association (AICE), these changes will mean that the price of gasoline will increase by around 10.1 cents per litre starting this Wednesday, while diesel will rise by about 2.8 cents per litre . The difference between the two fuels is due to the different reductions applied to the special tax on hydrocarbons.
– For drivers, the impact will be immediate. According to AICE, filling a 50-liter tank will cost about €5.03 more for a gasoline vehicle and around €1.41 more for a diesel vehicle.
The government, however, is maintaining a gradual withdrawal of tax breaks. A discount of 15 cents per litre on the excise tax will remain in effect during July, decreasing to 10 cents in August and five cents in September, before disappearing altogether in October, provided that energy market conditions allow it.
– The tightening of fuel taxes comes just weeks after the government reinstated standard taxes on electricity and gas. Since June 1st, both utilities have been subject to the 21% VAT rate again, after a long period with the reduced rate of 10%. Similarly, the Special Tax on Electricity returned to its usual rate of 5.11%, compared to the reduced rate of 0.5% in effect during the energy crisis. Meteored warns Spain will turn into the Sahara from Thursday with temperatures of 44°C & hot nights:
– Spain is preparing for a heatwave starting this weekend. A meteorological phenomenon known as a ” heat dome” could affect most of Spain from Saturday onwards, bringing maximum temperatures that will locally reach almost 44°C.
– Overall, maximum temperatures will exceed 36°C almost everywhere. However, the impact of the extreme heat will be particularly severe in the Ebro, Tagus, Guadiana, and Guadalquivir valleys (Andalucia), where temperatures could reach between 40 and 42°C, with a high probability of reaching 42–44°C in areas of central, western, and southern Spain at the beginning of next week. Even in the north, temperatures are expected to exceed 35°C.
– One of the most significant aspects of this weather event will be the nighttime heat. Widespread tropical nights are expected, and between Sunday and Tuesday, sweltering nights with temperatures not dropping below 25°C. The worst affected areas would be Extremadura, the Guadalquivir Valley, parts of Castilla-La Mancha, and sections of the Mediterranean coast. In cities like Seville, Córdoba, Badajoz, and Toledo, minimum temperatures could reach between 25 and 27°C, making it difficult to sleep at night. The political head of the Civil Guard lied to the UCO (Civil Guard’s Central Operational Unit): {Trans, summary}
– Following allegations that a network linked to the PSOE was attempting to discredit the Civil Guard’s Central Operational Unit (UCO), Director General Mercedes González {pic} met senior UCO commanders on 29 May 2025 to address growing concerns within the force. During that meeting, according to court testimony from two generals, she denied knowing former PSOE activist Leire Díez, referring to her only as “this lady” and saying she had no relationship with her.
– However, González had reportedly already met Díez on at least two occasions before the meeting and later acknowledged before the Senate that she knew her and had met with her. This apparent contradiction has become a key issue because investigators are examining whether Díez was involved in efforts to discredit the UCO and influence internal disciplinary action against officers investigating politically sensitive corruption cases. Sánchez’s mass regularization clashes with EU laws because it failed to coordinate with member states and violated the return directive: {Trans, summary}
– The Spanish Supreme Court may refer the government’s extraordinary migrant regularisation scheme to the European Court of Justice, questioning whether it breaches EU law concerning Schengen, the 2008 Return Directive, and the new return regulation. The scheme could grant residency to between 900,000 and 1.65 million irregular migrants.
– The Court, acting on appeals from Aragon and Valencia, identifies two principal problems. First, it is a unilateral, mass action without prior coordination with EU partners, apparently conflicting with the current EU migration and asylum pact. Second, the Return Directive requires individualised examination of each case, whereas this scheme grants a generalised right of temporary residence merely for being in Spain irregularly, instead of issuing individual return decisions.
– The Court notes a one-year residence permit grants Schengen circulation rights for 90 days in any 180-day period. The European Commissioner for Migration previously warned such national rules must not act as a blank cheque to travel freely or create distortions for partners. European Parliament sources claim the scheme represents disloyalty and a security risk. The government maintains the permits are strictly for Spain and that the regulation was drafted in full compliance with EU law. State legal services are preparing a response. Source, Spanish: https://www.20minutos.es/nacional/regularizacion-masiva-sanchez-choca-con-las-leyes-ue-por-no-coordinarla-con-los-socios-incumplir-directiva-retorno_7008590_0.html

What happens if the EU finds the regularization is in violation of EU law, according to DeepSeek AI: {DigameXtra with DeepSeek AI research assist}
– If the ECJ disallows the regularisation, the ruling would legally compel Spain to annul the scheme and halt granting the proposed residence permits. Any permits already issued would require revocation, triggering a duty under the Return Directive to issue individual return decisions. Non-compliance would launch an infringement procedure under Article 260 TFEU, potentially leading to a lump sum and a daily aggregate penalty payment, calculated by seriousness and duration, not per person.
– Politically, a judgment condemning unilateral mass regularisation would weaken Spain’s standing in EU negotiations on migration funding and asylum relocation. While Schengen membership would not be directly suspended, a systematic breach could justify neighbouring states reintroducing extended internal border checks under the revised Schengen Borders Code.
– In practical terms, mass physical removal of hundreds of thousands of people is unfeasible. The likely outcome would be a negotiated transition period coupled with an EU-funded enhanced return programme, with Brussels demanding strictly individualised examinations in any regularization mechanism, as seen in earlier Commission reactions to mass legalisations in Italy and Greece. Vox announces its vote against Moreno’s investiture as president of the Junta: {Trans}
– Vox will vote against the investiture of the Popular Party’s Juanma Moreno as president of the Andalusian Regional Government this Tuesday in the Andalusian Parliament, as announced by the regional leader of this party, Manuel Gavira, during his speech in the debate being held in the regional Parliament. {Update: The vote went as expected, Moreno failed to achieve the necessary support to win. Next vote Thursday. -Ed.}
– Gavira indicated at the beginning of his speech that the fifteen Vox deputies would vote this afternoon against Moreno’s investiture as president of the Junta, meaning he would only have the 53 votes of the PP, two short of an absolute majority, and would have to face a new vote within 48 hours, where he would need a simple majority. TORROX

Socialists denounce that the government of Óscar Medina is losing 278,000 euros in subsidies for the Dunes Park and has accumulated millions of euros in unused aid: {Trans}
– The spokesperson for the Socialist Municipal Group on Torrox Town Council, Mari Nieves Ramírez {pic}, has condemned another loss of grant funding by the People’s Party administration led by Óscar Medina. On this occasion, the Town Council will have to repay €236,000 corresponding to the grant awarded for the Dunes Park, in addition to €42,000 in interest, representing a total cost of €278,000 to the municipal finances as a result of poor management.
– According to the Torrox PSOE, this latest case is not an isolated incident but another example of the complete lack of control, poor planning and inability of Óscar Medina’s administration to make use of the funding opportunities available to the municipality. “The people of Torrox will have to bear a cost of €278,000 because of the poor management of the People’s Party administration. This is public money that could have been used to improve our municipality and, through their neglect, has been lost together with the interest that has accrued,” said Mari Nieves Ramírez.
– The Socialist spokesperson recalled that the Town Council must repay the entire grant allocated to the Dunes Park because it was not managed properly, with a further €42,000 in interest to be paid. “The most serious aspect is that this situation is no longer surprising because it reflects a style of government based on improvisation and publicity rather than planning and sound management,” she said.
– Ramírez pointed out that this episode adds to a long list of grants lost over recent years by Óscar Medina’s administration. The most serious case was the loss of €9 million in European funding, a historic opportunity to transform Torrox which, according to the PSOE, disappeared because the governing team was incapable of managing projects of this scale.
– It is particularly striking that Óscar Medina himself created a Councillor for European Funds portfolio in order to boast about the administration’s management. In addition, during these years the Town Council has had a provincial deputy, Sandra Extremera, who was specifically linked to the management of European funding. However, even with that structure in place, they have been unable to achieve what other nearby municipalities have managed, securing significant investment to improve their towns.
– In addition to the loss of European funding, there were other grants that the Town Council allowed to lapse or failed to manage properly. More than €600,000 allocated to training programmes was lost, together with almost €400,000 for lanes and infrastructure improvements. Also, €120,000 for sports facilities was also not secured, along with €90,000 relating to the repayment of the grant for the Santa Rosa roundabout, consisting of €80,000 in funding plus €10,000 in interest. Finally, the current €278,000 relating to the Dunes Park grant must also be added, comprising both the amount awarded and the interest the Town Council will have to pay.
– “We are talking about millions of euros that could have been turned into better public services, more infrastructure and more opportunities for the people of Torrox. While other municipalities move forward thanks to good management, Torrox is losing investment because of the neglect and incompetence of its administration,” the Socialist spokesperson said.
– According to the Torrox PSOE, this succession of lost grants demonstrates that Óscar Medina’s administration has replaced proper management with constant publicity. “The People’s Party is obsessed with photo opportunities, headlines, confrontation and propaganda. Meanwhile, it neglects what really matters, working to ensure that Torrox moves forward. A Town Council cannot be run solely through announcements and photographs. It requires rigour, planning and responsibility in the management of public money, which belongs to all the people of Torrox,” Mari Nieves Ramírez concluded.
– For all these reasons, the Socialist Municipal Group is demanding that the municipal administration accept responsibility, explain with complete transparency the reasons for these financial losses, and put an end to a way of governing that is depriving Torrox of essential investment for both its present and its future. FRIGILIANA

Civil Guard searches socialist controlled Town Hall & Municipal Offices of Frigiliana. Alleged crimes of malfeasance and embezzlement of public funds, among other offences, are being investigated: {Trans, summary}
– The Civil Guard is currently searching the Frigiliana Town Hall (Málaga, population 3,380), governed by the PSOE (Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party), and other municipal offices this Tuesday morning under a court order, as confirmed to EL PAÍS by sources close to the investigation. This operation, ordered by the Torrox Court of Instruction Number 1 (Málaga), is investigating alleged crimes of malfeasance and embezzlement of public funds, among others, these same sources added. The Court has placed the case under strict judicial secrecy.
– The PP in the municipality “has been denouncing alleged irregularities and malpractice in the Socialist administration of the Frigiliana Town Hall for two years, especially regarding contracting, transparency, and the use of public resources.” Source, Spanish: https://elpais.com/espana/2026-06-30/la-guardia-civil-registra-el-ayuntamiento-y-oficinas-municipales-de-frigiliana-malaga.html

GRANADA

New pedestrian walkway between beaches of Castell de Ferro & Cambriles on Granada coast now open to the public: {Trans, summary}
– The Gualchos-Castell de Ferro Town Council (Granada) has opened to the public the new pedestrian walkway that connects the beaches of Castell de Ferro and Cambriles and allows for a more comfortable, safe and accessible transit between both beaches.
– “We have removed a barrier that for years made it difficult to pass between the two beaches. Now anyone can travel this stretch comfortably, safely and accessibly, which is especially important for the elderly, those with reduced mobility, or families with children.” The mayor also highlighted the effort made by the City Council to carry out a project that required the processing of the corresponding authorizations and coordination between different administrations. Neon green auroras from space will take your breath away– space photo of the day for June 26, 2026:
– European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot, who is currently aboard the International Space Station as part of the εpsilon mission, spotted the aurora australis, or auroras over the Southern Hemisphere. (Lights in the Northern Hemisphere are known as the aurora borealis.)
– “Day 127, orbit 1968 — That aurora was absolutely spectacular… shimmering and dancing beneath us, stretching as far as the eye could see, and so intense it lit up the Station in shades of green,” Adenot said. “We’ve seen several since the beginning of the mission, but this one was on a completely different level — far too bright for my usual aurora camera settings. Moments like these never get old up here; the whole crew suddenly find themselves vying for a good spot at a window!” (Image credit: ESA/NASA/S. US Supreme Court upholds laws that prohibit transgender athletes from competing on women’s teams: {Trans}
– The conservative majority of the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld state laws barring transgender athletes from participating on girls’ school and college teams, concluding that these rules do not violate the Constitution. In a 6-3 decision, the justices decided to maintain the laws in West Virginia and Idaho, ruling that states can establish gender-based sports categories in schools and that these restrictions are compatible with Title IX, the landmark federal legislation that prohibits gender discrimination in publicly funded educational programs.
– The Supreme Court ruled that states can restrict participation on women’s teams to “biological women” – that is, athletes whose sex assigned at birth is female – even for transgender individuals who identify as women and are undergoing hormone therapy. The case stemmed from a lawsuit filed by two transgender athletes, Becky Pepper-Jackson, a high school student from West Virginia, and Lindsay Hecox, a student at the University of Idaho, who argued that their exclusion from women’s competitions was unconstitutional and discriminatory.
– Conservative Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who authored the majority opinion, argued that “physical differences between men and women, such as strength, speed, and endurance,” justify having separate teams based on biological sex. “Every biological male who makes the women’s team occupies a spot that would normally belong to a female athlete,” he insisted. The decision will have repercussions across the United States, as it affects the participation of transgender athletes in school and university competitions and supports similar laws passed in 25 other states.
– After returning to power in January 2015, Trump signed an executive order establishing the recognition of only two genders, male and female, and requiring that official documents reflect the gender assigned at birth, a measure that was challenged by LGBTQ+ rights organizations.
