SPAIN
Despite the ever-growing quagmire of political & family scandals, or perhaps because of all that, Pedro Sánchez plans to go on vacation for the entire month of August: {Trans, summary}
– According to ABC, the Prime Minister plans to minimize his official engagements during August. The plan being considered at Moncloa Palace is for the last Cabinet meeting to take place on July 28th, with regular activities not resuming until Tuesday, September 1st.
– As in previous years, both the Prime Minister and his wife, Begoña Gómez, plan to spend the entire month of August relaxing in La Mareta, Lanzarote. {They can’t travel far, a judge confiscated Begoña’s passport last week. -Ed.}
– With this month of rest, Sánchez intends to take a break from a political year that has been very complex and surrounded by investigations and legal proceedings that have affected his family, his wife and brother, as well as members or former members of the PSOE or the Government, such as José Luis Ábalos, Santos Cerdán, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero or Leire Díez. Two out of every three legal immigrants will be eligible for Spanish nationality within two years: {Trans, summary}
– Last Tuesday, the application period for regularization closed after a two-and-a-half-month process during which nearly 1.2 million applications were received.
– Approximately two out of every three immigrants whose status is regularized under the government ‘s measure will be eligible for Spanish citizenship within two years. According to government estimates, 67% of applicants for the extraordinary regularization process come from Latin American countries. For these countries, Spain offers a faster path to citizenship that requires only two years of legal and continuous residence, instead of the ten years required of most other foreigners, provided they demonstrate good civic conduct and a sufficient degree of integration into Spanish society. {This is then followed by a much larger wave of family members coming to join the new citizen. This is often 3 to 5 family members each, thus tripling to quintupling the new immigrant arrivals. -Ed.} Source, Spanish: https://www.20minutos.es/nacional/dos-cada-tres-inmigrantes-regularizados-podran-optar-nacionalidad-espanola-dos-anos_7009896_0.html

President of Andalusia, Juanma Moreno, sworn into office, defends the agreement with Vox that permitted his investiture: {Trans, summary}
– The President of the Regional Government of Andalusia, Juanma Moreno, has been sworn into office defending the governing agreement reached with Vox, emphasizing that “the Andalusian path is inclusive, not exclusive.” In a ceremony held in the gardens of the San Telmo Palace, Moreno promised that “I will be true to myself and to the Andalusian model,” a region “that is growing ever larger and where there is room for everyone.” Source, Spanish: https://www.larazon.es/andalucia/moreno-defiende-acuerdo-vox-via-andaluza-inclusiva-excluyente_202607056a4a1063a8768a6aee41c78c.html

New coalition government in Andalusia: {Trans, summary}
– Juanma Moreno {pic, left} is sworn in Sunday as President of the Regional Government of Andalusia for the third time, although the political climate and election results are very different from his previous two terms.
– Moreno failed to reach the threshold of 55 seats – he secured 53 – and therefore had to sign a governing agreement with Vox. The pact, comprised of 150 measures ranging from healthcare and education to more controversial issues such as immigration, also entails the inclusion of a representative from Vox in the Regional Government. This is Manuel Gavira {pic, right}, who will serve as vice president and head a large ministry with responsibilities for Justice, Local Government, Tourism, and Deregulation.
– Moreno will remain president, and Gavira will be the deputy prime minister, but there will be another vice presidency, which will be held by a member of the People’s Party. In this way, the Andalusian president is creating a counterweight to ensure power is shared, thus compensating for the concession that Gavira’s inclusion in the cabinet has entailed. As Moreno has confirmed, the government will have 13 ministries, and the final composition of the team will be announced this week, with the aim of getting up and running as soon as possible and preparing the next budget.
– The poor relationship between Moreno and Gavira prior to the agreement foreshadows a tense legislative term, although both parties have pledged to maintain stability. In previous parliamentary speeches, Gavira criticized Moreno for his shift towards left-wing policies. For his part, the president has opted for moderation, distancing himself from extremist positions. Now they are obliged to reach an understanding, to project an image of collaboration and goodwill. For the time being, Moreno has asserted that the controversial “national priority” already exists and is based on local roots as well as birthplace. UKRAINE WAR
Putin reportedly reiterates in telephone conversation with Trump that Russia will take all of Donbas:
– Russian President Vladimir Putin held a telephone conversation with his US counterpart, Donald Trump, on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of US independence, in which he stressed that Russia will take all of Donbas despite Ukraine’s efforts, according to a statement made Sunday by the Russian president’s advisor, Yuri Ushakov.
– “No matter how much the Kyiv regime clings to its remaining strongholds, our army will take them without fail,” Ushakov asserted in a telephone press conference, reporting on the conversation. Putin’s advisor noted that “an important stage in the liberation of the entire territory of the Donetsk People’s Republic was the establishment of control over a stronghold as important to the Ukrainian Army as Kostiantinifa,” whose capture was announced this Friday by the Kremlin.
– During the conversation, the fourth this year, Putin told Trump that kyiv and the European Union “are operating under a false perception of the overall situation on the front line,” Ushakov said. “Our president explained the real situation on the battlefield, where the Russian Armed Forces are advancing safely, liberating one town after another,” he said.

Four month delay before Public Prosecutor’s Office finally opens an investigation into the use of expired medical testing reagents at the Axarquía Hospital: {Trans, summary}
– The Malaga Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation to determine whether expired reagents were used in clinical analyses at the La Axarquía Hospital laboratory, following a complaint filed by the CSIF union.
– In March, the Eastern Malaga-Axarquía Health Area closed the case, concluding that no irregularities had been detected. According to the complaint, reagents whose expiration date or stability period had expired, allegedly since 2020, were routinely reused. Photographs, WhatsApp messages, and testimonies from current and former laboratory employees were submitted as evidence. The complaint also alleges manipulation of labels and procedures to allow equipment to accept reagents that should have been discarded. If confirmed, these practices could have affected the reliability of the test results, with the consequent risk to the diagnosis and treatment of patients.
– The investigation comes after an internal hospital inquiry initially dismissed the complaint. Now, after four months without any intervention, the Public Prosecutor’s Office has finally requested documentation from the hospital to determine whether there is evidence of a possible crime against public health. The Andalusian Regional Government has stated that it has submitted the requested information and will not make any further statements while the legal proceedings remain open. {The question remains as to if these expired chemicals are still being used for medical testing? Yikes! -Ed.} Source, Spanish: https://www.axarquiaplus.es/la-fiscalia-abre-una-investigacion-por-el-uso-de-reactivos-caducados-en-el-hospital-de-la-axarquia/
ENERGY CRISIS
No, Solar Panels Don’t Work Well During A Heatwave – Here’s Why:
– 2025 was one of the warmest years on record, and each subsequent year will threaten to break that record. If you want to stay cool without worsening the situation, you might be tempted to use solar-powered cooling systems, but that implies solar panels work when you need air conditioning the most: during heatwaves. Unfortunately, they are subject to the rule of “too much of a good thing.”
– While solar panels generally work best in direct sunlight, they ironically don’t do well in high temperatures — when the sun is at its strongest — due to how they generate electricity. Basically, the sun (and to a lesser extent artificial sources of light) generate particles known as photons, and when they reach solar panels, they create electric fields that make electrons start moving, creating a current that eventually produces the electricity we rely on. However, the hotter a material gets, the more its molecules move, electrons included. Above a certain temperature, electrons move around a little too much, making it harder to move through the solar panel to where they need to be, reducing voltage (the pressure of electric flow) and, in turn, efficiency.
– As a general rule, solar panels work best at a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit), and every degree Celsius above that hamstrings efficiency by 0.5%. Heatwaves can heat solar panels up to 65 degrees Celsius or more, reducing efficiency by as much as 25%. While direct heat/sunlight can impact a solar panel’s performance, a lack of cooling solutions can make their temperatures soar even hotter. Racing News- Leclerc won the British Grand Prix on Sunday: {Trans, summary}
– Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) of Monaco won the British Grand Prix on Sunday, the ninth race of the Formula One World Championship, held at the Silverstone circuit (England); where Italian Andrea Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) finished – after suffering a couple of breakdowns – sixteenth.
– Leclerc, 28, achieved his ninth F1 victory, his first of the season, by winning at Silverstone, ahead of the Englishmen George Russell (Mercedes) and the seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, a race that concluded behind the safety car that had entered a few laps earlier, due to the accident – without regretting major damage – of the Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull).
– Spaniards Carlos Sainz (Williams) and Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) finished twelfth and eighteenth respectively in a race after which Hamilton is being investigated for a possible driving infraction during yellow flags – which could cost him the podium and even leave him out of the points – and in which Argentine Franco Colapinto (Alpine) finished ninth.
– Englishman Lando Norris (McLaren), who could ‘inherit’ Hamilton’s third place if he ends up being penalized, crossed the finish line fourth, one place ahead of Frenchman Isack Hadjar (Red Bull), in a race that Mexican Sergio Pérez (Cadillac) finished fifteenth. The two RB drivers, New Zealander Liam Lawson and Swedish-British rookie Arvid Lindblad, finished sixth and seventh respectively. Brazilian Gabriel Bortoleto (Audi) crossed the finish line eighth, one place ahead of Colapinto. Frenchman Pierre Gasly, teammate of the Argentine, captured the last point up for grabs by finishing tenth, one place ahead of Australian Oscar Piastri (McLaren).
– The next Grand Prix, the Belgian Grand Prix, will be held in two weekends’ time at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit. Source, Spanish: https://efe.com/deportes/2026-07-05/leclerc-gana-silverstone-gran-premio-gran-bretana/

Alert has been issued after listeria was detected in several batches of cod in oil– “Bacalao Natura en aceite de girasol”: {Trans, summary}
– The Spanish Food Safety Agency (AESAN) has issued an alert regarding the presence of Listeria monocytogenes bacteria in several batches of sliced cod in sunflower oil from the brand La Mar de Tapas, following notification from the Andalusian Regional Government. AESAN’s statement specifies that the affected batches of cod are all those beginning with the numbers 0532 and with expiration dates between July 10 and 30.
– They are sold in chilled slices in 130-gram tubs and the product name is “Bacalao Natura en aceite de girasol” (Bacalao Natura in sunflower oil). These should be returned to point of sale for refunds.
– If you have consumed any of the products from the affected batches and are experiencing symptoms consistent with listeriosis (vomiting, diarrhea or fever), Aesan recommends going to a health centre. NATURE
Every fig we eat has a wasp inside: {Trans, summary}
– Every fig contains the remains of a fig wasp, but there is no cause for concern because the insect has completely broken down and become part of the fruit. Fig wasps play an essential role in the life cycle of fig trees, as they are the only insects capable of pollinating the flowers, which are enclosed inside the fruit rather than exposed like those of most other trees. Female wasps carry pollen from male figs to female figs by entering through a tiny opening. Once inside a female fig, they cannot escape because the passage is too narrow. The wasps die within the fruit, and their bodies are broken down by natural processes, becoming nutrients that help the fig develop. By the time the fruit ripens, no visible or recognisable insect remains are left. Although people unknowingly consume these remains when eating figs, they are fully integrated into the fruit and cannot be detected.
– If you find actual “worms” in wild figs, they are usually not fig wasps. The most common possibilities are:
*Moth caterpillars: Several moth species lay eggs on developing figs. The caterpillars hatch and tunnel through the fruit, feeding on the flesh. These are the most common visible “worms” found in ripe wild figs.
*Fruit fly larvae (maggots): Fruit flies can lay eggs through the fig’s opening (the ostiole) or into damaged fruit. The larvae feed inside the fig before emerging to pupate.
– So, if you cut open a wild edible fig and see obvious white worms several millimetres long, they are almost certainly caterpillars or fly larvae, not fig wasps (This may be inaccurate, see following article. -Ed.}. Wild figs are more likely to contain these insects because they are not protected by commercial pest management, and the fruit remains on the tree long enough for insects to infest it.
Source, Spanish: https://www.laopiniondemalaga.es/medio-ambiente/2026/07/05/sabias-higo-comemos-avispa-77308974.html
Not so fast…
Actually, there is more to the “fig worm” story, the worms may be larvae of the fig wasp:
– Safe fig wasp larvae can be distinguished from harmful intruders by checking a few physical and contextual clues that reliably separate the harmless pollinator offspring from other pests that may infest figs.
– Fig wasp larvae are tiny, translucent white to pale yellow, and have soft, almost gelatinous bodies about 2–3 mm long. They remain inside the fig’s ovary, move slowly, and never chew the outer tissue. Adult wasps are often visible nearby as minute dark winged insects that emerge from the fig after the larvae finish development.
– In contrast, harmful intruders such as fruit fly or beetle larvae are usually darker, larger, and have visible mouthparts or hard exoskeletons. They tend to tunnel through the flesh, create visible holes, and may leave behind mold or a sour smell. If larvae appear in a cultivated, seedless fig where wasps are normally absent, the presence of any larvae is unusual and likely indicates a pest rather than the natural fig wasp.
– Read the full explanation in this English language article.
