SPAIN
Forest fire update: {Trans, summary}
– The forest fires they face a new day with a more favourable evolution in much of the country, although large devices remain deployed before the arrival of the fourth heat wave. The fire of the Sierra Oeste de Madrid it has been technically stabilized, which has allowed new evacuations to be lifted, while surveillance work continues to avoid reactivations. De-escalation is also advancing in Ávila and Toledo, where neighbors continue to return to their homes.
– The main focus of concern remains on La Vall d’Uixó (Castellón), which continues unchecked despite the improvement in working conditions for aircraft. The fire maintains a perimeter of 81 kilometres and some 9,300 hectares affected, while the extinguishing teams continue to consolidate the most active sectors and the rest of the communities reinforce surveillance in the face of rising temperatures and the high risk of new fires. Gasoline prices rise by 15% after their fourth consecutive increase on the eve of the August holiday exodus, the most expensive since 2023: {Trans, summary}
– Fuel prices in Spain have risen for a fourth consecutive week following the restoration of 21% VAT at the start of the month, making fuel more than 15% more expensive over the past month. Petrol now averages €1.644 per litre after a weekly increase of almost 4%, while diesel has climbed 6.16% to €1.722 per litre. These are the highest prices for the start of the August holiday travel period since 2023.
– The Government ended the temporary 10% VAT rate but introduced reductions to the Special Hydrocarbons Tax, cutting prices by 15 cents per litre in July, 10 cents in August and 5 cents in September. Industry groups say these reductions have not fully offset the higher VAT.
– A 55-litre diesel fill now costs €94.71, €15.73 more than a year ago, while the same petrol tank costs €90.42, an annual increase of €8.53. Source, Spanish: https://www.20minutos.es/lainformacion/economia-y-finanzas/las-gasolinas…

Inflation reaches its highest level in more than two years– it climbs to 3.5% in July after the end of tax breaks on gasoline and the rise in electricity prices: {Trans, summary}
– Spain’s annual inflation rate rose from 3.2% to 3.5% in July, reaching its highest level in more than two years. The increase was driven mainly by higher fuel and electricity prices after reduced VAT and other tax relief introduced earlier this year expired. Despite continuing fuel discounts, prices have continued to rise.
– The Government says its economic response plan has reduced inflation by around one percentage point in recent months, claiming it has offset more than 60% of the inflationary impact linked to the conflict involving Iran. It also maintains that the measures continue to protect household purchasing power. The claim that the measures “protect household purchasing power” is partly true in a narrow sense. Lower taxes and fuel subsidies reduce what consumers pay compared with a situation without them. However, whether households are actually better off overall depends on many other factors, including wages, rents, food prices and electricity bills.
– Core inflation, which excludes energy and unprocessed food, increased to 3%. Consumer prices rose 0.2% during July, marking a sixth consecutive monthly increase. The Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices reached 3.8% year on year, while core HICP inflation was estimated at 3.4%. Final July inflation figures will be published on 13 August. The judge refuses to suspend the tax investigations into Zapatero, his wife and daughters: {Trans, summary}
– The judge investigating the Plus Ultra case has refused to halt tax investigations by Spain’s Tax Agency into former Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, his wife, daughters, company and businessman Julio Martínez Martínez. The ruling rejects requests from the Tax Agency to suspend its inspections while the criminal investigation continues, adopting the position of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor.
– The judge ruled that administrative tax inspections should normally continue alongside criminal proceedings and found no sufficient overlap between the two investigations to justify suspension. However, if the Tax Agency discovers evidence of possible tax offences, it must report them to the court.
– The only potential area of overlap concerns jewellery seized from Zapatero’s office, whose tax and criminal significance has yet to be determined. The judge also rejected arguments that providing existing documents or banking information to tax inspectors would amount to self-incrimination or breach defendants’ legal rights. MALAGA PROVINCE
The ‘Submerged Wines’ Project: {Trans, summary}
– Malaga Bay is being used as a natural laboratory to investigate whether storing wine underwater genuinely changes its characteristics. The ‘Submerged Wines’ project, led by the University of Malaga with support from organisations including the Costa del Sol Axarquía association and local wine bodies, aims to replace marketing claims with scientific evidence.
– Researchers submerged 160 bottles of white, red and sweet wines from seven Malaga area wineries at a depth of ten metres for five months. Identical bottles were stored in a conventional cellar to allow direct comparison under controlled conditions. Environmental factors such as temperature and depth were recorded throughout the experiment.
– A controlled blind tasting involving specialists is scheduled for October to determine whether underwater storage produces measurable differences. Researchers have already noticed that one white wine developed a more golden colour, but stress that laboratory analysis and blind tastings must establish whether the change is scientifically significant.
– If underwater ageing proves beneficial, Axarquía wineries could market premium wines at higher prices. The project could strengthen Malaga’s reputation by combining scientific research, local winemaking traditions and new commercial opportunities. TORROX
The Virgin of the Snows will once again parade through the streets of Torrox on the main day of the patron saint festivities: {Trans, summary}
– Torrox is counting down the hours until August 5th, its main festival day in honour of its patron saints, la Virgen de las Nieves, and San Roque (Our Lady of the Snows, and Saint Roch- patron saint against plague and infectious diseases). The day will once again bring together hundreds of residents and devotees for a religious program culminating in the traditional procession through the town’s streets, an event that this year will include several new features to enhance the route of the religious images.
– Among the main new features is the installation of a large, temporary dome, seven meters high, in the Plaza de la Constitución. This structure will enhance the procession of the Virgin of the Snows and Saint Roch through one of the town’s most emblematic locations. In addition, the Brotherhood’s Perseverance Group will create special decorations along the processional route. Furthermore, the new ambo, lectern, and Paschal candle holder donated to the parish will be blessed during the day.
– The events will begin at 11:00 a.m. with a solemn religious service in honour of the patron saints, presided over by parish priest José Manuel González, and featuring musical accompaniment by the Santa María de la Victoria Choir of Málaga. Afterwards, around 12:15 p.m., the cloistered procession with the Blessed Sacrament and the veneration of the religious images will take place.
– Later in the evening, at 8:30 p.m., another Mass will be celebrated, after which the eagerly awaited procession of Our Lady of the Snows and Saint Roch will begin through the streets of Torrox’s historic center. The route will proceed through Plaza de la Constitución, Calle Baja, Plaza de la Hoya, Calle Alta, Calle Almedina, Calle Rabitilla, Calle Baja, Plaza de la Constitución, and back to the parish church, accompanied by the Torrox Municipal Band and the Band of Bugles and Drums of Our Father Jesus of Nazareth from Vélez-Málaga. They steal more than 13,000 meters of copper cable in the northern area of Granada in less than a month: {Trans, summary}
– The theft of more than 13,000 metres of public street lighting cable in Granada’s Norte district during July has triggered a major National Police operation. The thefts, committed between 11 and 29 July across around 20 streets, particularly affected the San Francisco neighbourhood and the Recinto Ferial area. The stolen copper and resulting damage are valued at nearly €50,000.
– Police have arrested four suspects and identified nine people believed to be involved, most with previous police records. Three vehicles allegedly used to transport the stolen copper have also been identified.
– One suspect was caught cutting street lighting cables and was later arrested again while stealing more cable. Another was found inside an underground cable chamber, while a third was removing copper pipes and electrical wiring from a sports facility. A fourth suspect was found with copper and more than four kilograms of marijuana. The investigation continues and further arrests remain possible. IMMIGRATION IN SPAIN
Ceuta on the verge of collapse! 1,500 migrant arrivals in nine days, a broken-down ship, and fears of a “humanitarian tragedy”: {Trans, summary}
– Ceuta says its migration crisis has reached a critical stage after more than 1,500 migrants, including adults and children, entered the city by sea during the past nine days, mostly by swimming across the border. Another 117 people were rescued while attempting the crossing on Wednesday alone. The migrant reception centre is operating well above capacity, with hundreds more waiting outside for admission.
– The Unified Association of Civil Guards (AUGC) warns of a potential humanitarian tragedy, saying officers lack sufficient staff, equipment and working boats to cope with the growing number of sea arrivals. It also claims a newly acquired €500,000 patrol boat remains out of service because of damage sustained after only one day in operation.
– Ceuta’s regional government has described the situation as “extremely serious” and urged Madrid to act immediately by strengthening border resources, transferring migrants to other regions, increasing cooperation with Morocco and reforming immigration legislation. Morocco’s response to the Ceuta crisis: {Trans, summary}
– Morocco has blamed the massive influx of migrants at the Ceuta border on “criminal organizations” and has stressed that its collaboration with Spain on migration issues is “exemplary,” according to diplomatic sources at the Moroccan embassy in Madrid who spoke to Europa Press.
– These sources have stressed that the recent attempts at irregular entry into Ceuta “do not in any way reflect a desire on the part of the Moroccan authorities to encourage irregular immigration” and that everything points to these movements being due, rather, to exploitation by criminal networks dedicated to human trafficking and the smuggling of migrants. In a rare show of cooperation all political parties in Ceuta are calling on the government to close the border and deploy the army: {Trans, summary}
– All members of the Board of Spokespersons of the Ceuta Assembly demanded this Thursday that the central government close the border and deploy the army, as well as declare a national emergency under national security regulations, given the “qualitative leap” that, they claim, the migration crisis in the city has undergone due to the massive influx of people from Morocco. The Board of Spokespersons is composed of the PP, PSOE, Vox, and the local parties MDyC and Ceuta Ya!.
– The request came after an extraordinary and urgent meeting held this afternoon, in which the political groups agreed to request three immediate measures from the Executive: the declaration of a national emergency in accordance with the legislation on national security, the reinforcement of the State Security Forces and Corps along with the deployment of the Army to “guarantee the inviolability of the border and citizen security”, and the closure of the Tarajal border. MIDDLE EAST
US launches new wave of attacks against Iran, leaving at least three dead and two wounded: {Trans, summary}
– At least three people have died and two others have been injured on Qeshm Island {pic}, in the middle of the Strait of Hormuz, after the new barrage of air strikes launched on Wednesday night by the United States against Iran in retaliation, according to the US military, for the “attack attempts” launched the previous day against US forces and interests in the Middle East.
– In related news, Egyptian authorities on Thursday attributed the arson attack on two gas tankers in the port of Damietta, Egypt, to drones, but have not yet blamed any specific actor for the attack. Egypt blames drones for the fire that destroyed two oil tankers in the port of Damietta. The Damietta Port Authority has confirmed that the port continues operating with full normality, all terminals and moorings open to manage ship arrivals and departures as scheduled, reports the newspaper ‘Ahram’. Consumer group warns of a batch of salami with salmonella from the Díaz brand: {Trans, summary}
– The Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition has issued an alert after detecting that a batch of Díaz brand salami contaminated with salmonella bacteria was put on sale in Andalusia and Castile and León.
– Specifically, it is Iberian-style salami, batch 260513, packaged in plastic in 250-gram units, with a best-before date of May 13, 2027.
– Although the initial distribution has taken place in Andalusia and Castile and León, it is possible that it could reach other regions. Therefore, the information has been shared with the regional governments so that they can verify the product’s removal from the market.
– The agency recommends that people who have products affected by this alert at home refrain from consuming them.
If you have already consumed the affected food and are experiencing symptoms consistent with salmonellosis, mainly diarrhea and vomiting accompanied by fever and headache, it is recommended to go to a health centre. So sharing X video links with friends who do not have an X account is now pointless. They can still read posts, see images and watch the videos without sound, from links you provide them.
– As if they didn’t already have enough fake content from ad-bots and spoofed accounts, Fakebook is now flooded with AI generated posts and summaries. Renfe train strike in Malaga- minimum services for Friday, July 31: {Trans, summary}
– Another rail strike. It will be marked by a nationwide Renfe strike. This Friday, July 31st, the Railway Union has called for a work stoppage by train operators and drivers. This situation will affect trains departing from and arriving at Málaga’s María Zambrano station .
– In response to this call, the Ministry of Transport has established minimum services for this date, both for commuter trains, as well as for medium-distance, AVE and long-distance trains. The Government has established, at a national level, that the minimum services for Medium Distance trains will be 65%; it has been established that 73% of high-speed and long-distance trains will run.
– The minimum services of the Málaga commuter rail, for its two lines, C1 and C2, will be 75% during peak hours (between 6:00 and 9:00, 13:30 and 16:00 and 18:00 and 20:30) and the rest of the time will be 50%. Borderline Fake News- “The Andalusian government achieves social peace with doctors in exchange for improved working conditions”: {Trans, summary, explainer}
– The Junta de Andalucía has signed an agreement with the Sindicato Médico Andaluz (SMA) aimed at improving the working conditions of doctors in the regional public health service. Measures include reducing the number of patients assigned to family doctors, limiting consecutive on-call hours, introducing paid time for training and research, improving career progression, and creating working groups to develop further reforms. In return, the SMA has suspended its planned industrial action, which the Junta presents as restoring stability after months of disputes.
– {Explainer: The agreement is being portrayed by the Andalusian government as bringing an end to conflict with doctors, but the headline overstates what has actually been achieved. The deal is not an agreement with all doctors, nor with the entire healthcare workforce. It is not an agreement with nurses or other health workers. It is a bilateral agreement between the Junta and the SMA, the main doctors’ union in Andalucía. Other major health unions, including CCOO, UGT, SATSE and CSIF, were not parties to the negotiations. While none has publicly condemned the agreement so far, neither have they endorsed it. As a result, describing the outcome as the government having achieved “social peace with doctors” is an exaggeration. A more accurate description would be that it has reached an agreement with the principal doctors’ union, ending that union’s planned protests while leaving broader sector-wide negotiations unresolved. -Ed.} Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/andalucia/junta-sella-tregua-medicos-andaluces-pacto-mejoras-laborales_0_2007610425.html
WEST NILE UPDATES
The Andalusian Regional Government confirms three more cases of West Nile virus in the province of Seville, bringing the total to nine persons infected, with 16 municipalities on alert: {Trans, summary}
– Andalusia has confirmed three new human cases of West Nile fever, bringing this season’s total to nine, all in Seville province. The latest cases include two men, aged 40 and 48, with mild symptoms in Villamanrique de la Condesa and Palomares del Río, plus a 71-year-old man from Seville’s Tablada district who remains in hospital with neurological complications, a rare but serious form of the disease.
– In response, the regional government has extended the alert status for Villamanrique de la Condesa and Palomares del Río until 20 and 21 August, while Seville city has been added as a new alert area after investigators identified Tablada as the likely place of infection.
– The measures require enhanced mosquito surveillance, increased public health information and stronger mosquito control by local councils. There are now 16 municipalities across Andalusia designated as West Nile virus alert areas.

NEW LIFE CHURCH
New Life Church
– Sunday Service:
Whether you live in Nerja or are visiting our area, you are very welcome to come and join us on Sundays at 11.00am. Join us for a time of Holy Spirit led worship and experience the presence of our God. Our teaching is Bible based as we honour God and obey His Word. During this time of uncertainty, God’s Word reminds us that the Gospel shines brightest in times of darkness. Our service lasts for about 1 hour and 30 mins. With Tea and Coffee afterwards.
– Prayer Meeting:
You are also welcome to join our prayer meetings on Wednesday mornings at 11.00am for 1 hour, where we meet for prayer and worship.
– Jesus said: “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me”. (John 14:6)

– We need someone with a big heart and a fairly big garden for Lily and Norma, both big girls. They were reserved for adoption, sadly they have been let down. They are currently with their previous owner but they are moving away due to family poor health. Can anyone offer a foster or forever home to one or both very friendly loving dogs?
Please take a look at our website, where you will find more information and photos, plus details of other dogs and pups that we have in our care. Our adoption costs are 110e for pups that have been fully vaccinated, rabies, chip and passport. 180e for older dogs that have all vaccinations, neutered and passport. This contributes towards their vet and care costs, and helps us to continue rescuing abandoned dogs and cats.
