Nerja’s 20th Tourist Day: Fri, 25 Sept
The opening event of the celebration will take place in the Nerja Cave Gardens at 11:00 a.m.

Brussels rejects official status for Catalan for the eighth time, delivering another blow to the Sanchez platform: {Trans, summary}

Spain remains out of the Eurovision Song Contest; it will not participate in 2027: {Trans, summary}
– RTVE will hold its firm line against the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). President José Pablo López told the Joint Congressional-Senate Committee on Parliamentary Control in the Senate that he will propose to the Board extending Spain’s suspension from Eurovision for 2027, to be held in Bulgaria. The Antonio Montes Cultural Association brings the 4th International Gastronomic Festival to four municipalities in the Axarquía region: {Trans, summary}

Did You Hear Them? Fighter jets in the skies over Malaga due to the activation of Operation ‘Eagle Eye 26-03’: {Trans, summary}

190,000 tickets go on sale for the Caminito del Rey in Malaga for the December-May period- they can be booked from this Wednesday: {Trans, summary}
– The Provincial Council of Malaga has announced that this Wednesday, September 23, tickets will go on sale to visit the Caminito del Rey between December 7 and May 2, 2027. There are 190,000 tickets that will be available from 10:00 a.m. for the general public, organized excursions and travel agencies on the Caminito del Rey website, as announced by the Vice President of Infrastructure and Sustainable Territory, Cristóbal Ortega.
– Visits, in winter can be made from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., extending until 5:30 p.m. in spring from March 28.

Tourism slows this year– August leaves a year-on-year drop in tourists in Malaga hotels due to the fall in national visitors: {Trans, summary}

The reservoirs in Malaga end the summer at 80% of their capacity and ensure water for more than two years: {Trans, summary}
– Málaga province ends summer 2026 with far healthier water reserves than in the severe drought years. SAIH Hidrosur data to 21 September 2026 put provincial reserves at 494 hm3 of a regulated maximum of 616 hm3, or 80.19%, nearly double the 262 hm3 (42.53%) of the same date last year. On normal demand of almost 200 hm3 a year, that guarantees supply for more than two and a half years even with no rain at all.
– La Viñuela is the great turnaround. In September 2025 the province’s largest reservoir by surface area stood near technical collapse at 24 hm3 (14.54%). It now holds 141 hm3 of its 165 hm3 capacity, or 85.45%, giving the eastern Axarquía about four years of relief, safeguarding public supply and tropical crops without cuts. The Axarquía desalination plant advances, budgeted at around €201.5 million, with completion set for 2031, that will take some load off La Viñuela.
– Guadalhorce-Guadalteba is the province’s best-placed system, at 91.40%, holding 255 hm3 of 279 hm3, up from 134 hm3 (48.02%) a year earlier, securing Málaga capital’s drinking water and Guadalhorce irrigation for over four years.
– Conde de Guadalhorce stands at 66.67%, with 44 hm3 of 66 hm3, up 17 hm3 year on year.
– El Limonero, on the Guadalmedina, holds 14 hm3 of 22 hm3, or 63.64%, up from 9 hm3 (40.90%).
– La Concepción in Marbella is worse off, at 53.23%, holding 33 hm3 of 62 hm3, down from 36 hm3 (58.06%), strained by western Costa del Sol demand above 60 hm3 a year and reliant on the Marbella desalination plant.
– Casasola, near Almogía, is lowest at 31.81%, with 7 hm3 of 22 hm3, down from 8 hm3 (36.36%), but is designed as a flood-protection dam needing empty margin.
– Montejaque remains at 0%, as in September 2025. It had filled completely after winter rain, becoming a brief tourist attraction, but the water filtered away underground through cracks and sinkholes in its karstic bed, leaving it empty. Torrox opens registration period for the gala to elect the Queens and Mister of its 2026 fair; event details: {Trans}
– The Plaza de la Constitución will host the highly anticipated event next Wednesday, September 30th, starting at 9:00 PM. The municipal event will feature a wide variety of categories adapted for all ages, ranging from children’s queen and mister (ages 3 to 11) and youth queen and mister (ages 12 to 17) to the festival queen and mister (ages 18 to 30). The program also includes the categories of Miss Flamenco (ages 31 to 45), Miss Elegance (ages 46 and up), Miss Visitor (no age limit), and a Family category for groups of at least two people.
– To participate, those interested must submit their applications before 1:00 PM on September 30th, either in person at the Villa de Torrox Municipal Theater or at participating establishments. While the winners in the children’s and youth categories will be determined by lottery, in the other categories a specialized jury will evaluate aspects such as styling, accessories, and the runway presentation, disregarding any assessment related to physical appearance.
– {This attempt at progressive “inclusiveness” runs against the very idea of a traditional competition. Why put in any real effort if the winners are selected by lottery? Why disregard the physical appearance of the participants they worked so hard to achieve? “Participation awards” remove the incentive to be a top performer. Competition encourages improvement. “Participation awards” are a race to the bottom of the barrel. Children need to learn to compete, to accept both wins & losses graciously, in order to develop life skills they will need as adults.
And why do they use the “Queen” title for females, but men must be “Mister” rather than the correctly corresponding “King”? A blatant insult to all men.
And why have they obscured the face of the woman in the poster? Another progressive effort to “protect” women? Pretty ladies are now frowned upon?

“They want to kill us!”– the scream that led the Police to a torture room in Estepona (Málaga): {Trans, summary}
– The Policia Nacional dismantled a torture room in a flat in Estepona, Malaga, and arrested seven “suspected Georgian or Serbian” citizens allegedly linked to a Caucasus criminal organisation. Two men were freed, both injured and showing signs of severe torture.

Trump signs Greenland deal letting US take over two more military bases on Danish island:
– President Trump inked an agreement with the leaders of Greenland and Denmark Tuesday to bolster America’s military presence on the world’s largest island, ending a standoff that had hindered US-European relations. Each leader signed a copy of the pact and then warmly shook hands for the cameras.
– The pact grants the United States a permanent military presence on the island and vetoes access by Russia and China, while respecting Denmark’s sovereignty over the autonomous territory and Greenland’s right to self-determination. [1]
– The deal marks a retreat from Trump’s earlier ambitions for an outright acquisition of Greenland, but does constitute the first major expansion of US military infrastructure in the region since the breakup of the Soviet Union.

The strange sandwiches made with churros that are served in a cafeteria in Malaga: {Trans, summary}
– La Churrocatería, at Avenida Gregorio Prieto 25 in the Teatinos district of Málaga, has made the churrocata its signature dish. It is fried churro dough, split lengthwise and filled like a sandwich. Owner Pablo Zinna says the idea came from noting that churros suit sweet and savoury alike. The dough is cooked like a small loaf, fried, partly hollowed, then filled. Two sizes are sold, normal and XL.
– Zinna says it is not oily but dry and crisp, achieved through the dough’s shape, the oil, and frying quality and temperature, then draining. The crisp, lightly toasted surface sets it apart from an ordinary sandwich.
– Both kinds cost €3.80 in normal size. Savoury fillings include mixed chicken, loin, serrano, bacon and more. Sweet fillings include Nutella, dulce de leche, white chocolate, Kinder, Ferrero and strawberry. Savoury are more popular “by far”, per Zinna, especially at breakfast, though served in the afternoon too.
– The shop also sells mini churros with sauces, straight filled churros, a fondue with fruit, chocolate and six mini churros, and tejeringos, including a Málaga variety, all made in house without machines.
