Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

New tax on empty homes- up to 150% surcharge possible: {Translation}
– Thursday, April 27th, the new housing law was approved with a majority of votes in the Council of Ministers, following the agreement reached between the coalition government, plus EH Bildu and ERC, enough for a safe majority, which now passes to be processed in the Senate before being published in the Official State Gazette (BOE).
– The law, that contemplates some changes with respect to the initial draft of 2022, incorporates new features such as the extension of the ceilings for the updating of the rental price, a new definition of what is considered a stressed area and changes in the payment of fees to real estate agencies.
– In this sense, the new regulation also contemplates changes with regard to vacant properties. Thus, it will offer city councils the option of establishing economic penalties for those owners who keep their properties empty, with the aim of encouraging them to come onto the market. However, this decision will be a municipal one.
– Municipal councils may apply a surcharge on the Real Estate Tax (IBI) of up to 150% in these cases. As stated by the real estate portal Idealista, a vacant property will be considered to be one that remains unoccupied continuously for a period of more than two years, except in certain justified cases, and provided that the lessor is the owner of four or more properties.
– “This situation of unoccupancy will be declared by means of an administrative procedure with a hearing of the taxpayer”, indicates the above mentioned portal. Therefore, local councils will be able to apply a surcharge of 50% for dwellings that have been vacant for two years, and it will be possible to reach 100% if they have been unoccupied for more than three years.
– Likewise, the new regulation contemplates that this percentage may reach 150% if these dwellings belong to owners who have two or more residential properties in the same municipality. Source, Spanish: https://www.20minutos.es/noticia/5123376/0/nuevo-impuesto-viviendas-vacias-ley-vivienda/
ANDALUCIA
Sanchez Snow Job in Andalucia, the community where Spain’s Government distributes the least: {Translation, summary}
– President Pedro Sánchez only delivered 68% of funds committed to Andalucia last year. The Ministry of Finance qualifies that these are only “provisional” data and accuses the Board of investing even less. Meanwhile, Sanchez puffs out its chest for “the record investment” for Andalusia in 2023 in self adulating campaign speeches without clarifying what specifically is being provided. Cataluña, that does not want to be part of Spain or even speak Spanish, had 7 times as much as Andalucia. 400,000 liters of milk per day to the sewer until a price agreement is reached: {Translation, summary}
– Milk producers from provinces such as Seville, Malaga and Granada have begun to throw away the milk to draw attention to the drop in the price of the product meaning since last Monday the loss of some 400,000 litres a day that they expect to continue until there is an agreement with the French multinational.
– The company, with which hundreds of farmers throughout the autonomous community work, is “imposing” a new contract in which the price of a litre of milk is reduced by nine cents, which would mean losses per farmer of 20,000 euros per month, according to COAG Granada.
– As a sign of protest against the “coercion” of the company, farmers in Granada and throughout Andalusia have begun to broadcast videos in which they show themselves throwing away all the milk produced. Salvador Merino, owner of the Merino Domingo farm, explains in his video that the situation they are going through is “quite extreme” since “Puleva does not want to collect the milk.” This farmer assures that with the contract that they are imposing “we are going to be ruined, they want the cows to end in Andalusia”. MALAGA
Malaga’s famous flamingo lagoon dries up: The most important wetland in Malaga province and one of the most renowned areas of biodiversity in Europe has almost disappeared due to unseasonably warm temperatures. La Laguna de Fuente de Piedra, in the north of the province, is almost bone dry. A lack of rain paired with higher-than-usual temperatures in recent weeks have turned the area into a salt desert, and this year it is not habitable for flamingos. These birds feed on plankton as well as algae and small crabs that they would usually find in the water. Instead the area has become a mudflat, with a very high salinity level. And with the lagoon so dry, these birds do not even land. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/malaga/antequera/malagas-famous-flamingo-lagoon-dries-up-20230428190402-nt.html

EUROPE
M’aidez for Macron- Paris Burns as Hundreds of Thousands Rally and Riot Against Globalist Govt on May Day:
– As people across Europe danced around the Maypole to mark the coming of Spring after another harsh winter mired by economic deprivation, the people of France did their own form of traditional dance, that of rioting against an out-of-touch government behind the walls of a palace.
– Compared to last year, when just 116,500 citizens marched throughout France on May Day, official Ministry of Interior figures estimate that some 782,000 poured out onto the streets on Monday, with some 112,000 in Paris, alone. The numbers are a clear sign that the protests against Macron do not appear to be going anywhere anytime soon, despite the ‘Jupiterean’ leader’s pleas to the public to give him 100 days to turn around the ship – to which the unions in return promised “100 days of anger”. iOS 16.4.1 (a): Apple Suddenly Releases 1st-Ever iPhone Rapid Security Response Update:
– This is new. For the very first time, Apple has released a Rapid Security Response (RSR) update to iPhone users, with a corresponding RSR for the Mac. It represents a change in how Apple will launch smaller updates- as indicated by the number of this one. After iOS 16.4.1, you might legitimately have expected iOS 16.4.2 as the small update before iOS 16.5 lands. But no, we now have a letter, and even parentheses, to attach to the numbers: here comes Apple iOS 16.4.1 (a).
– Here’s how Apple describes RSRs: “Rapid Security Responses are a new type of software release for iPhone, iPad and Mac. They deliver important security improvements between software updates – for example, improvements to the Safari web browser, the WebKit framework stack or other critical system libraries. They may also be used to mitigate some security issues more quickly, such as issues that may have been exploited or reported to exist.” Full article: https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidphelan/2023/05/02/ios-1641-a-apple-suddenly-releases-1st-ever-iphone-rapid-security-response-update/

Decoder reads thoughts recorded by a brain scanner:
– This decoder has been called semantic, and rightly so. Previous interfaces recorded brain activity in motor areas that control the mechanical basis of speech, that is, the movements of the mouth, larynx and tongue. “What they can decode is how the person is trying to move their mouth to say something. Our system works on a very different level. Instead of looking at the low-level motor domain, it works at the level of ideas, of semantics, of meaning. That is why it does not record the exact words that someone heard or pronounced, but rather their meaning,” said Huth. The resonances recorded the activity of various brain areas, but to achieve this feat, researchers focused more on those related to hearing and language. ARTIFICIAL INTELLEGENCE (AI)
Google AI pioneer says he quit to speak freely about technology’s ‘dangers’:
– A pioneer of artificial intelligence said he quit Google to speak freely about the technology’s dangers, after realising computers could become smarter than people far sooner than he and other experts had expected. “I left so that I could talk about the dangers of AI without considering how this impacts Google,” Geoffrey Hinton {pic} wrote on Twitter.
– In an interview with the New York Times, Hinton said he was worried about AI’s capacity to create convincing false images and texts, creating a world where people will “not be able to know what is true anymore”. “It is hard to see how you can prevent the bad actors from using it for bad things,” he said.
– The technology could quickly displace workers, and become a greater danger as it learns new behaviours. “The idea that this stuff could actually get smarter than people – a few people believed that,” he told the New York Times. “But most people thought it was way off. And I thought it was way off. I thought it was 30 to 50 years or even longer away. Obviously, I no longer think that.”
– “That so many experts are speaking up about their concerns regarding the safety of AI, with some computer scientists going as far as regretting some of their work, should alarm policymakers,” said Dr Carissa Veliz, an associate professor in philosophy at the University of Oxford’s Institute for Ethics in AI. “The time to regulate AI is now.” Photo: Mark Blinch.
