Brussels fails in second attempt to revive vaccination pace: {Summary, translated from elpais.com}
-Europe’s vaccination campaigns are once again being derailed by failures in the distribution of doses, doubts about the side effects of some doses, and bickering between some member states. The main problems revolve around repeated failures by the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca to meet the agreed delivery schedule.
-The company has acknowledged that it will miss its first quarter target, despite having already revised it downwards by more than 60% to 40 million doses. The new figures point to a delivery of 30 million, a 25% cut. Some EU sources suggest that the figure could be even lower. For the second quarter, AstraZeneca says it will only deliver 70 million doses out of the 180 million planned. In total, the company is aiming to deliver 100 million doses in the first half of the year, it said in a statement released on Friday.
-AstraZeneca’s new fiasco caps off a turbulent week, which began with the acknowledgement that not all of the expected vaccines will be distributed in the second quarter either. The European Commission, based on data from pharmaceutical companies, has revised estimates from 380 million doses to 300 million, almost a quarter less.
-The second-quarter cutback comes despite the Commission’s marketing authorisation for Janssen’s vaccine, the fourth in the EU portfolio and the first to be administered in a single dose. Brussels had hoped the new drug would help speed up vaccination campaigns. However, the pharmaceutical company (owned by US multinational Johnson & Johnson) has already indicated that the first deliveries to the EU will not arrive until the second half of April. “Right now we don’t have a single vaccine in stock,” said Johan Van Hoof, head of Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine division.
-The Commission has booked up to 1.86 billion doses with the four companies that have a licensed vaccine in Europe (BioNTech-Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Janssen). The EU body used a budget of 2.6 billion euros to pay six companies (the four licensed companies plus CureVac and Sanofi-GSK) to produce the EU-bound doses in advance, without waiting for the green light from the European Medicines Agency. The aim was for the vials to start flowing into member states as soon as the agency validated the vaccines. But only Germany’s BioNTech and its industrial partner, US-based Pfizer, appear to have met this commitment. The delivery schedule for the rest remains uncertain.

Amid vaccine shortage Andalucía halts use of 1,200 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccines, others in short supply: These AstraZeneca vaccines are stopped as a result of the blood clot incidents reported in Austria. The Junta has decided to keep this batch of vaccines on “stand-by” until the findings of the EMA are known.
-Aguirre has also reported that the Andalusian Health Service (SAS) has received, this Friday, “less than half of the expected doses” of the AstraZeneca vaccine and went on to announced that the new Janssen vaccine, recently authorised by the European Union, will not arrive “until April and there will be few.”

WHO grants emergency use listing for the Covid vaccine made by Johnson & Johnson: The World Health Organization granted an emergency use listing Friday for the coronavirus vaccine made by Johnson & Johnson, meaning the one-dose shot can now theoretically be used as part of the international COVAX effort to distribute vaccines globally, including to poor countries without any supplies.
In a statement, the U.N. health agency said “the ample data from large clinical trials” shows the J&J vaccine is effective in adult populations. The emergency use listing comes a day after the European Medicines Agency recommended the shot be given the green light across the 27-country European Union. Italy to shut shops and schools amid infection spike: Residents in Italy’s “red-zone” regions will be required to stay home except for work, health or other essential reasons. From Monday, schools, shops and restaurants will shut in more than half of Italy, including the two most populous regions containing Rome and Milan, with PM Mario Draghi warning of a “new wave” of the coronavirus outbreak.
For three days over Easter, 3-5 April, there will be a total shutdown. Full article: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-56382608

Hundreds could be affected by residency rejections over health insurance dates: A group campaigning for the rights of Britons in Spain after Brexit has called for urgent action from the authorities as “hundreds” of British nationals are set to be rejected as new Spanish residents.
Brexpats in Spain claim there have been misunderstandings over the start dates of applicants’ private health policies. The problem is particularly evident in Malaga and Alicante provinces.
The terms of the Withdrawal Agreement say that this healthcare cover needed to be valid from when the British national started living in Spain as a resident.
According to Brexpats in Spain, there could be hundreds of Britons caught out as their private policies were only dated to start from 1 January 2021, once the transition period after Brexit ended, instead of starting on a date up to 31 December 2020. Works will also be carried out on some sections of the Lavadero lane and the Lower Los Morenos lane, and the project is scheduled to finish in calle Mistral, Manuel Barón, Salvador Dalí and the overpass in calle Verdial.
Pavements, including the corresponding horizontal signaling, will also be refurbished where required, and in some cases, the replacement of manhole covers, shafts, and gratings. Full article: https://www.euroweeklynews.com/2021/03/12/rincon-de-la-victoria-streets-resurfacing-begins/

Fakebook To Jam In Even More Ads: Facebook has started displaying ads in users’ News Feeds. You may not be seeing them yet as the company is rolling them out gradually, like it does for all its changes.
These new ads are marked as “Featured,” which could be confusing given that Facebook has always used the word “Sponsored” for its ads. Currently, Facebook uses the verb “feature” for making content on a user’s Timeline bigger and more prominent.
Last month, a Facebook spokesperson said the company hoped to “show people no more than one Sponsored Story in their News Feeds per day.” This is no longer the case, as Facebook now says you may see more Featured stories “if you visit your News Feed a lot.”
Facebook may have chosen “Featured” over “Sponsored” for these new ads since these stories are not simply paid for by advertisers. The stories must be related to friends and/or Pages which users have previously Liked. In other words, you won’t see these ads appearing organically in your News Feed- they need to be linked to you in one or more ways. (As determined by the very Artificial Intelligence snoops whistleblower Edward Snowden exposed in his video I posted in yesterday’s issue. -Ed.)
