Easter in Malaga: Semana Santa is back after two years. Processions start on Sunday 10 April and continue every day until Easter Sunday 17 April with the exception of Saturday 16 April. VIDEO LINK
Public Holidays: Thursday 14 (Maundy Thursday) and Friday 15 April (Good Friday) are both public holidays in Spain. Bars and restaurants open as usual on both days, but shops will be closed on the Thursday. Covid Spain- Health registers 48,834 infections and 357 deaths since Tuesday:
-The number of patients hospitalized in intensive care units stands at 371 this Friday. This is a decrease compared to Tuesday, when the number of patients in the ICU marked November lows. The rest of those hospitalized with coronavirus decreased to 4,217, with an occupancy rate of 3.4%.
-The Ministry of Health has registered 48,834 new infections this Friday, which brings the total number of cases since the start of the pandemic to 11,627,487. New traffic law- Can you be fined for keeping your phone in a mobile holder?:
-A new traffic law toughens the penalty for holding and using a mobile phone while driving, subtracting six points from the licence instead of the three as in the previous regulations. The fine remains at 200 euros.
-But what happens if the mobile is in a holder? The director of the The Directorate-General for Traffic, Pere Navarro, helped clear a few things up in a recent digital meeting on the DGT website.
-During the meeting he pointed out that as long as the phone remains in an approved stand and is not used while driving, drivers will have no problems. “If a person needs to use their phone, they should stop at a suitable place and finish what they need to do before continuing their journey,” he said. He went on to explain that if a phone is used while in a stand, there will be three points deducted from the licence and the fine stays at 200 euros.
-The new traffic law allows the use of wireless or approved devices in the vehicle as long as they do not need the use of hands or helmets, headphones or similar instruments.
-When it comes to smart watches, including ones that receive calls, Navarro pointed out that “because you do not have to hold them by hand in order to use them, they do not interfere with driving” and added that “they will be treated as hands-free devices in the new law”.

A judge accuses three senior officials of the Government of Sánchez of fraud in the award in the purchase of masks and related materials: {Translation, summary}
-The Government of Pedro Sánchez is being investigated by a Madrid court for alleged irregularities in the purchase of masks made in the first months of the pandemic.

Some stores are planning to ignore the public holidays and will open every day to help them recover from the losses caused by the pandemic:
-In Spain, there are two public holidays in Easter week, as Maundy Thursday is a ‘festivo’ as well as Good Friday, but this year the retail sector is making a mammoth effort to recover from the pandemic and many shops are planning to open every day. Shopping centres and large stores (and some smaller ones as well) will be open from Saturday 9 April right through to and including Sunday 17th.
-It means that in Malaga city people can shop until they drop in the Larios Centre, Málaga Plaza, La Rosaleda, María Zambrano train station, Los Patios, Plaza Mayor, McArthur Glen Designer Outlet, and Málaga Nostrum, all of which are shopping malls, and in major stores such as Carrefour, El Corte Inglés, Ikea, Leroy Merlin, Worten, Conforama, and Verdecora. The Anglican Chaplaincy of Nerja & Almunecar holds a midday (12 noon) Eucharist service at San Miguel church in Nerja every Sunday. San Miguel is to be found in Plaza Andalucia. See map https://goo.gl/maps/nCMt8XqAQvuyZiaE8
NB while the building work on the main church roof is undertaken, please use the door on Calle San Francisco – at the back of the church buildings – to access our Sunday services.
Iglesia de San Miguel (St Michael’s Church) is within easy walking distance of Nerja Bus Station. Free on street parking may be found close to Plaza Andalucia or off street in the Dustbowl car park.
A midweek Eucharist service is held by Zoom each Wednesday at 9.30 am and a simple service of Compline also takes place by Zoom on Thursdays at 6pm.
Residents and visitors are welcome at our services.
