Tip from a Reader: UK ‘home fees’ for British students in Spain who wish to study in the UK. Until recently, the position of UK nationals living in Spain who wish to study in the UK has been uncertain. At one time, it had appeared that after Brexit, the children of UK nationals in Spain would have to pay overseas university fees which are far more expensive than the home fees and that there would be no access to UK student loans. The only way around this would have been for the prospective student to reside in the UK for 3 years in order to achieve the residence requirements.
Fortunately however, this has now all changed. On 11th August this year, the UK government advised that UK nationals living in the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland would continue to be eligible for UK home fees and student grants for courses up to the end of 2027. The requisite conditions are (a) that the person was ordinarily resident in the EEA or Switzerland on Dec 31st 2020, and (b) they have been ordinarily resident in the EEA or Switzerland continuously since that date and for the three years before beginning the course in the UK.
Apparently, the latter condition does permit a gap year outside of Europe as long as that doesn’t constitute a permanent move out of the EEA. The above also covers those children who are not themselves UK nationals as long their parents meet the requisite conditions.

More than 350,000 doses of the Covid-19 vaccine arrive in Spain as mass immunization campaign begins: With a day of delay, the first 350,000 doses of the Pfizer and BioNTech Covid-19 vaccines arrived in Spain on Tuesday, as the mass immunization campaign got underway after a symbolic administration of the vaccine across all of the country’s regions on Sunday. The containers with the vaccine arrived by plane on Tuesday at airports in Madrid, Barcelona, Vitoria, Valencia and Seville, from where they were distributed to the rest of the regions, according to a statement from the Health Ministry. Tony Rice, bluegrass flatpicking master, dies aged 69, guitarists pay tribute: Rice died on Christmas morning at his home in Reidsville, North Carolina. News of his death was shared via the International Bluegrass Music Association on social media.
“It is with a heavy heart we say goodbye to one of the most iconic voices & musicians in bluegrass,” the statement reads.
“Few will ever match his skill & influence. Rest in Peace, Tony.”
Rice was renowned for his fluid, melodious flatpicking on his Martin D-28, which influenced scores of acoustic guitarists who followed, including the likes of Jason Isbell, Ricky Skaggs and Billy Strings.
“Tony Rice was the single most influential acoustic guitar player in the last 50 years,” Skaggs wrote on Facebook. “Many if not all of the bluegrass guitar players of today would say that they cut their teeth on Tony Rice’s music. He loved hearing the next generation players play his licks. I think that’s where he got most of his joy as a player.”
As well as releasing a number of albums under his own name, Rice was a prolific collaborator, whether as a member of the David Grisman Quintet, or playing with the likes of Jerry Garcia and Dolly Parton.
